Seki is an early bird. He can wake up so early and he won’t feel tired. Sometimes he goes out to train at 4:30 in the morning and drags Haru with him and it’s obvious that Haru falls asleep on the way there.

Lowkey hosts cookouts and the food there is BOMB. He is always on the grill but he might step out to dance.

Seki hates snakes. One of the only animals he lowkey stays away from because of how ‘overpowered’ they are.

If you don’t mind sharing your trajectory, how did you get in as a writer and later in-between stuff like you said? And do you ever wish to go back to that line of work in this life or in a future incarnation?

Quite literally fell into it. I made a series of friend encounters by just being open and honest with people when I lived in Texas. First, a woman crying in a domestic violence shelter I basically fed my cigarette pack turned out to be a super famous fashion designer that did half the work in the music industry, for example. So, when I started to help her get her affairs in order it started on a human level, a very person to person sort of personal assistant while basically setting her up to semi-retire in a quiet place she could be safe and stable. (She's still worked a few indie pieces since then, things like that, but she's not strutting the red carpet anymore or whatever.)

Then there's how I met 8ball; same period of my life. My day job was selling shitty electricity packages out of a kiosk in a cricket store scooping up customers in line for phones. I just observed him, and at some point, threw away the idea of selling him anything when between my mother's history as a playwright and Susan, I knew he was real by how he talked; and when I mentioned Susan, it was like, you're helping Susan? Then he started dumping references on me, including upcoming singers that have since become famous one way or another, things like that--and a guy out at Starbreakers named Jerry King.

King usually charges a few hundred an hour for his time but be dropping the 8ball referral on him made it family-free; from there, they basically started looking at my script, teaching me how to get funding and all those things. My life flipped real weird around then and got real unstable so it bounced me around for a bit and that's the point I grabbed random doohickey jobs in weird places I crashed.

Me poking video editing was kind of wanting to get back into that while feeling I would never be physically mobile enough for the kind of runner work I used to do, though it shaped up into other uses.

If we speak of incarnations and desires to return to it, it is difficult to explain what being at this grade of awareness is like. One can still be oneself, but "other incarnations" are also very much living that life now, and that is fine, we still do good work in one another's reflex of a greater hand. Or. Whatever.

Because um. When I said I sort of. Installed myself by mistake, and realized I can't log out. I uh. I figured out how to be the hand. I actually figured out how to be a lot more than the hand.

So uh.

Yes? I am?

I uh. Like to try to stay around Hand level. I can still stay sane, balanced, and mostly The Weird Fella You Knew while sitting there. It's when I have to reach deeper you get Willy Wonka or satan these days.

S3 Ep 55 By Imperceptible Approaches

I. LIKE. JERRY. Thanks goodness, I'm not alone in not trusting Ren and their institute! Even Anna wasn't happy about this whole deal, she agreed to it only because they promised her to help with one of her monsters. And the way Jerry talked about Morrison - I LOVE YOU PAL ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Also Rob finally met Bill and broke down crying after shouting at Bill for his stupid urge to go to Morrison back then. Their conversations are going to be the death of me, they are too wholesome to bear 💔 I really love all the team but when it comes to those two and Rob in particular, I need that meme with "I've had him just for a day and a half but if anything's happened to him- etc." THEY MADE HIM CRY. That's unforgivable. Well, technically Bill did, but it wasn't actually him but Morrison so I hope that bastard's done for by now. He didn't sound peachy the last time I heard him, and Ned was frustrated his puppet broke, apparently. I wonder if Ned consumed and is impersonating him now… I can bear Ned. He's at least entertaining. Not Morrison though.

But back to my favourite guys - when Bill admitted what he did was stupid and selfish (IT WAS, C'MON! But my heart still breaks hearing him being like that), Rob backed down and said "no, it wasn't". Looks like this guy's a free therapy for me, too, y'all. Because something inside unclenched at that. It wasn't?.. Bill was driven to his breaking point. He was being torn apart on the inside for months with no one to talk to. Ain't that familiar… And so he broke, and did what he couldn't help doing - went to Morrison to shout at him for everything he's been through, just let it all out. I… know the feeling. It's nice, being told it's valid.

And now to the Institute. It's supposed to be safe, y'know. And YET the very first night Anna moves into her quarters they have power outage (which is supposed to be impossible), she gets locked inside her room while someone can be heard outside the room door in her hall. One of their technical specialists who was supposed to be on shift that night goes missing (mind you, they are several stories underground) and his name and "help", "lost" appear among the gibberish that was supposed to be the logs from that night. And now Bill and Rob apparently occupy the same quarters because Bill heard the same sound Anna did. Gods, he JUST got out of that evil mushroom zombies thing to whom he now has mental connection, can he catch a break please???

Oh, and Kate has the most supportive husband. They are so sweet.

And the way Kate's husband immediately went to Andew, their son's, allergies (and Ren had to say "Yes, Kate told us, several times"), same as Rob started talking about Bill when asked if there is anything the Institute doctors should be aware of. It's just. Tight connections, so much care and warmth ❤️ And relatable, that's something I'd also do.

I'm slowly warming up to Ren - I can't help liking their way of spiraling out on a long musings on various subjects amidst the conversation, - but I still don't trust them, just like Jerry. Honestly I sighed with relief upon hearing him AND Anna's uneasiness with all that. And Anna's friends with Ren!

…mhm yes, that's all just one episode, and I didn't even finish listening to it yet. Too many emotions, needed to vent them out. …oh wait, that was it? Oh. Okay! :D

P.S. TELL ME the next ep they're exploring this tech guy disappearance! The cover collage indicates something different, but c'mon, there's a mystery right under your nose! I hope it's investigated at least at some point…

- My sister requested that I gif this moment from Artists and Models

- I, of course, agreed (to quote her, this scene was "a meme waiting to happen" so i'm gonna make that dream a reality, WATCH THIS SPACE)

- I "accidentally" paused on this exact frame, my sister and I proceeded to cry laugh for several minutes, I couldn't bring myself to look at my computer screen, it was a whole thing

- After gathering my strength and resisting the urge to throw up from laughing heartily on a full stomach, I screencapped this frame

- I decided this picture needed to be something SO a couple of hours of creativity, giggling, and tedium-induced anxiety from individually painting microscopic dots to look like sparkles later, we have this masterpiece (one of my best edits I dare say)

And yes, I am aware that Dean has a certain shall we say "Chippendale-esque" flare as The Bat Gent, but you know I think it works, plus he'd have a full costume this is just him in the bath, he likes to wear his mask and bowtie he has quirks leave him alone

- movie nights are a huge thing for you two, your range is broad af but mostly consists of marvel, disney and studio ghibli. he has a thing for 80s movies tho, felt ferris bueller on a personal level

- cried when he watched the princess diaries for the first time and will end u if anyone hears about it

-rather savage irl but he cries during some movies, especially when he's tired, he gets emotional and even whiny

the star mare has one true love in the world and that’s herself

shadi learned to fight for herself against herself and others cuz a lot of people doubted she could become the powerful warrior and magic user she is today and it’s been an uphill battle but despite the bad days she’s killing it at loving herself

lani doesn’t need self esteem because it’s a fact that she’s better than everyone else?

jerry’s too tired to care what others think of him. he hates the things he’s been forced to do in the past but also knows he would do it again so he’s been forced to accept his dislike of himself and move on cuz what else can he do? poor boy

tawa is terrified of not being who he’s supposed to be and also losing the star mare. he doesn’t let himself think about it.

washta is haunted by the fact that she’ll never have a home or family. also she’s very, very scared of her father. she’s pretty certain if she has to face her father she’ll die, but she’ll die fighting!

the star mare fears nothing and no one. this is not helpful many a time.

shadi is scared of being useless and a burden. she would do everything she could to do at least something in a seemingly helpless situation

lani is scared she’ll lose her purpose and have no reason to do the things she does. fortunately her quest will take a long time to complete so she doesn’t have to worry about that for a while

jerry has bee allergies and bad bug bite reactions so he’ll perform an impressive number of flips and spins to avoid getting stung/bit. also he’s scared of the dark

34. how easily do they trust others with their secrets? with their lives?

tawa doesn’t have secrets cuz he’s a celebrity and also dumb, and he’s too pathetic to protect himself so he has to trust literally everyone with his life

washta does not trust easily with her secrets and not too much with her life but if you give her reason to trust you, she’ll do it if there’s no other option

the star mare would kill anyone who tried to know her secrets/tell other people her secrets. she’s still very bitter about how spirit binding (the magic system) spread to humans. and no she wouldn’t trust anyone with her life except tawa in theory because, as mentioned, he’s pathetic and maybe wouldn’t be the best person to entrust your life with

lani will tell you a thousand secrets if it’s profitable to her. oh and sure she’ll trust people with her life, and also trust that they’ll ultimately betray/fail her so she always has a backup plan

jerry does NOT trust people ESPECIALLY lani because NOT AGAIN YO (they’re siblings and would die for another)

for tawa, insult literally anything about him and he’ll immediately start crying. to get him mad? insult his art or the star mare. then he’ll fight you! and lose! but still try in self-righteous rage!

tell shadi her morals/beliefs/way of life is pointless and wrong and she will be Upset

lani would laugh at you for trying to annoy her

easiest way to push jerry into beserk mode? tell him he ought to be nicer to his older sister, and listen to her more often

36. what is their sense of humor like? give an example of a joke they would find humorous.

tawa doesn’t understand the human abstraction of so-called humor cuz whenever washta laughs at him it’s because he’s done something stupid (i.e. fallen on his face) but if he had a social media he would probably post terrifyingly morbid memes without a hint of irony, followed immediately by pics of a grassy wind-swept hill covered in wildflowers with the setting sun behind it

washta is so tired and dead all the time that if you can get her to smile that’s very impressive. however, videos of cats getting all prepped and hyped to jump a short distance? and then slipping and falling? would make her howl. also “funny depression memes” that remind her life is a joke so it’s okay to not stress over everything

the star mare thinks it’s almost cute the way humans try to stand up to her sometimes. she likes it even more though when the fear sets in and they start to run.

you could tell the lamest most pathetic and unfunny joke ever and shadi will laugh and say something that makes it 10x better so other people will laugh and still like you. all the indescribable memes on tumblr with like five layers of backstory and foreknowledge to them? she loves those. also, vines. not that she has them in her world but if she did she would make incredible tiktok videos

lani finds life fairly amusing. if she thinks laughing at your dumb joke or meme will be beneficial to her in some way then she’ll do it. otherwise she’s just laughing at you.

jerry forgot laughter in the slave pits but thinks everything his dragon does is adorable/hilarious so that’ll bring a chuckle out of him. also he would like funny depression memes and vines

37. how easy is it for them to say “i love you”? do they say it without meaning it?

tawa says it a thousand times a minute to the people he cares about (read: the star mare) in a thousand different ways because he’s bad at words but also would sob it in your shoulder if you complimented his artwork so yeehaw! he means absolutely everything he says so if he says he loves you, or shows it, he loves you man.

it is not easy for washta to say she loves you because she’s been hurt and has hurt too many times to count now and she doesn’t want to be hurt again but, like tawa, she means the things she says and she’ll show her love by saving your life or like swearing to protect you with her own or promising she’ll never leave your side as long as you still desire

it wouldn’t occur to the star mare to say “I love you” because she assumes you already know it (you being tawa)

shadi will scream i love you to every person she passes, she’ll scream it on the top of a mountain, she stare you in the eyes and touch your hand and tell it to you so soft and tender you’ll start to cry. she can say it like a joke or “ha ha sure yeah love you too” sarcastically, but deep down inside? she means it bro

lani has never told a single being she loves them while meaning it, and jerry knows this

Interview:  Gentle Brontosaurus

Hi lovers! Here at Fallen Love headquarters we periodically interview people that we adore in order to shine a spotlight on our wonderful pop planet. We post all those interviews right here for your education and enjoyment.

Gentle Brontosaurus are an indiepop band from Madison, Wisconsin, USA. They are Huan-Hua Chye (ukulele & keyboard), Nick Davies (keyboard & trumpet), Cal Lamore (guitar), Paul Marcou (drums), and Anneliese Valdes (bass). Fallen Love head Harley interviewed the band through a computer. Fallen Love Records: How did Gentle Brontosaurus begin? Huan-Hua: Get ready for some band lineage in excruciating detail:

Nick and I used to be in a band called TL;DR that broke up after a couple of band members moved away, so we decided to start a new band.

We knew Paul and Jon from having played with their old band, Baristacide, and we recruited Michael to play bass for us through Craigslist.

Eventually Jon decided it was time to part ways with us and we asked Cal to play guitar. Nick and I had met Cal through a songwriting website called FAWM, February Album Writing Month.

Last year Michael moved to Milwaukee and decided to leave the band so we recruited Anneliese, whom I had met via a community ukulele club called MAUI and who had filled in on bass for us a while back for a Buffy The Vampire Slayer Musical Episode cover show we did with our friends Croaker.

FLR: All five of you sing. Was that something planned on from the early stages or did it just discover itself? HH: We used to only have three vocalists (max one lead and one backing at any given time) but decided that seven instruments and three vocals between five people wasn't making the sound guys' lives hard enough (not to mention ours) so we added some more. It has definitely been a voyage of self-discovery. I think we'll try to streamline a bit more in the future, though, since venues almost never have enough mics. FLR: Based on your social media some people might expect you to be a comedy or novelty band. Are new listeners ever caught off-guard? Nick: Is this regarding the Facebook account where we share dinosaur memes or the Twitter account where we post things like Baha Men trivia? Early on I had our genre listed as "brony rock" on Facebook just as a joke and it’s come back up occasionally. Like the time Jimmy K, a local radio personality, had both us and The Ferns (Cal's previous band) on an episode of his show and he got his intro cards mixed up and called The Ferns "brawny rock." HH: Also we got invited to put a song on an actual brony rock compilation, which was unfortunately vetoed by other band members. Anyway I aim to keep expectations at rock bottom so that new listeners can only be pleasantly surprised when we turn out to be (hopefully) honest and charming and good. I don't usually aim for funny when I'm writing songs (although sometimes it ends up there) but I usually aim to be entertaining on social media. (I usually man the Facebook account and Nick the Twitter account). I feel it's the least I can do. FLR: Who writes the lyrics? Each song carries a real depth, like a full short story condensed into four minutes. HH: Nick and I are about 50/50 on songwriting. On the first album our old guitarist wrote one and our old bassist wrote one but I think on the new album it's more or less evenly divided between me and Nick as far as lyrics go. I think the two of us share a love for possibly ill-advised wordiness and allusions so sometimes people have been surprised to find out who wrote which songs. I wrote poetry for years before ever turning to lyrics and a few songs, like "Rabbit Test", are remnants of poems or stories or concepts I could never quite make work on the written page. N: I don't intend to give every song a narrative but in addition to FAWM in February I participate in NaNoWriMo in November. Maybe some of that bleeds over into songwriting. Storytelling does provide a way to address topics without being tied to your own perspective. I'd be kind of uncomfortable writing songs all about Nick and how Nick feels right now, especially if we might decide to have someone else in the band sing it. HH: I, on the other hand, love writing songs all about HH and how HH feels right now. Maybe this is why we have so many songs about food.

FLR: Your debut album, Names Of Things And What They Do, came out in November 2015. What was the process to get there and how has the path shifted since then? HH: That album was very DIY like our new one will be. We recorded it over a period of months in our old practice space and our old guitarist Jon mixed it. Similar approach this time around, all home recordings. It's going to be an interesting mix as some of these songs, like "Kevin Bacon", we've played for years (it almost made it onto the first album) and others, like "A Shot" or "For Emma, Forever Ago", we'd only been playing for a few weeks and had never played live before starting to record. So for those newer songs we're kind of figuring out arrangements and parts as part of the recording process. We recorded all the drums and scratch tracks live, the way we're used to playing, and are now going along and re-recording individual parts to replace the scratch versions. One of the things that's pretty interesting about our piecemeal recording process is that we often can't hear/process the cool things everyone else is doing since we are distracted at the time with our own performances. Sound balance is also difficult to get right live with five people,so there have been a lot of moments where, once you're listening to a clear recording, you go "Oh, I had no idea you had this awesome part happening here." It makes you appreciate everyone and their contributions and musicianship just that much more. FLR: Do you think dinosaurs had feathers or scales? Anneliese: Yes, and some had neither. FLR: Why hasn't Netflix rebooted popular '90s sitcom Dinosaurs yet? A: This might be a question for the Jim Henson Workshop. Fun fact: Kevin Clash, who's the voice of Elmo, was also the voice of Baby Sinclair. And Jessica Walter (of Arrested Development) was the voice of the mother. HH: I'm sure it's on the horizon since we are apparently officially in the midst of a serious worldwide franchise shortage. I will officially volunteer us to provide the soundtrack for the inevitable gritty, sexy reboot. (I mean have you seen Riverdale, the gritty, sexy Archie reboot? Anything is possible.) The theme song will be called "Nobody's Baby" and will be in the style of Julee Cruise and everyone will wear black leather jackets and white undershirts in a very sexy James Dean kind of way. Also, if you don't have a physical copy of our album, Baby Sinclair fans should check out the art on the inner sleeve. FLR: Do you ever get tired of answering dinosaur questions? Will your choice of band name haunt you for the rest of time? HH: No and no. Since we are from the Land Before Time I'm not totally sure yet what this "time" thing is but I'm sure I'll figure it out one of these days. (Sorry to the random person on Tumblr I stole that joke from.)

FLR: What's your earliest musical memory? N: The first songs I wrote were entirely MIDI, written in a sheet music editor. Sadly they were lost forever in the mp3.com buyout of 2001. I thought I had a cassette copy but I went back to my parents' house in D.C. this past summer and the cassette is gone too. After that era I started recording angsty stuff with a beat-up acoustic guitar and some ill-conceived "rapping." Unfortunately there are surviving copies of that. A: Dancing around the living room to my dad's old boogie-woogie records when I was three or four. HH: They gave us recorders in grade school because the only thing better than one five year-old playing the recorder is fifteen of them all at once so I clearly recall making some really avant-garde noise rock as part of my early musical education. Also one of our music teachers was a grad student at the UC Berkeley School of Music and wrote an opera called The Nightingale that he made us learn, like a troupe of performing opera monkeys. FLR: What song have you listened to the most this year? HH: I went to look at my Spotify stats and some of my top tracks in recent months have been: Frankie Cosmos- "Fool", Big Thief - "Masterpiece", X - "The World's A Mess, It's In My Kiss", Eux Autres - "Other Girls", and Jens Lekman - "To Know Your Mission." N: I'm also enjoying the new Jens Lekman album! Crying's Beyond The Fleeting Gales has been the album that has hardly left my car stereo this year. FLR: What's one question you've never been asked in an interview that you would love to be asked someday? HH: You are standing in front of two doors. Behind one lies immeasurable riches, behind the other lies certain death. There are two guards guarding the doors, one sworn to always lie and one sworn to always tell the truth, but you don't know which is which. What is the best song ever written, and why is it "Africa" by Toto? N: If we're ever interviewed by Nardwuar [The Human Serviette] I hope he knows that I dressed as him for Halloween once. HH: Also I think Paul and Anneliese were hoping to do a Jerry Springer-style interview someday with paternity tests and chair fights in front of a studio audience. FLR: What does 2018 look like for Gentle Brontosaurus? I know you're working on your sophomore album. N: We've started recording out at Cal's parents' barn in Cambridge, WI. You must have seen the big chart on Facebook. Once we get that released I think we're hoping to go out on tour again. Maybe reconnect with some of the folks we met on the road in 2016 or maybe play some shows around the upper midwest where we actually haven't been yet. FLR: The first album came on CD with a piece of toast. Will the new album come as a download code in a jar of jam? N: If someone bought our toast in 2015 and is still hanging onto it in 2018, I don't think jam is going to make it edible. HH: I'm not really into jam bands. A 9 year-old jewel named Dresden...

As often noted, many days my visitors are the best part of the day. This past Wednesday, July 3, was no exception. 

I had just told The Record’s Editor Jerry Lankford I had a couple of errands to run when some folks walked in, a man, woman and young daughter..  After my usual query "Now what brings you folks to our little corner of the world?" an amazing visit began. 

They were from St. Petersburg, Fla., and in the Boone area on vacation. The mom, Devon, explained that she spent some summers visiting her grandmother in Boone, and had always enjoyed the mountains, and came back when she could. The man's name was Adolfo, and the daughter was 9-year-old Dresden.  They were all three fascinating, but the way Dresden carried herself, confident and at ease well beyond her years, was noticeable.  When asked what she was doing during summer, she explained that she wrote poetry, wrote songs, and was an artist—among other things.

 They asked a lot of questions, listened patiently to my stories about each artifact, oddity, and, of course, me.  These were the kind of people you felt as though you had known for 20 years in 20 minutes.  In the process of the conversation, I inquired how long they were going to be around.  They said they were renting a little place and would be around a few more days, then wondered aloud where would be a good place to watch the Fourth of July Fireworks around here.

I smiled and said, "Funny you should ask that, because I live upstairs here and bunch of folks are coming tomorrow night to enjoy a picnic dinner, watch the Fire Truck Parade, and then the fireworks at dusk—and you folks will be as welcome as a summer breeze.”

"We'll be there." Devon said, without hesitation. 

As they were leaving, Dresden noticed the picture of my late dog, Powder, on the front counter.  Of course I showed them the other pictures and told them all about my wonderful dog and my sadness at losing him to cancer about 18 months ago. We talked on a bit about dogs and, as, we said our goodbye's, they reminded me they really would be back to see me on the Fourth.

Ann and Tom Graves and Marilyn Payne were the first to arrive Thursday with loads of food. They kindly set up things and got the place organized for company. I told them that I may have special guests from Florida and they would really enjoy this family. A while later, Ann came and told me that my Florida folks had arrived and I went up front. 

By the time I got there, my friend, Carl White, of the syndicated TV show Life in the Carolinas, was already working them, and said that the young girl had something for me.  Dresden handed me a card she had made with a drawing of Powder on the front—she had seen that picture of Powder for about two minutes and was able to sketch him for the card.  I was so taken aback I could hardly speak, or even read the card.  Dresden then read aloud the inside of the card, which was written by her own hand, and in front of a house-full of people she had never seen before.  She read with a comfort and ease that would have made any adult proud. 

It read:

 What we have enjoyed we can never lose; All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.

The bond with a dog is as lasting as the ties of the earth can ever be.

When an 85 pound mammal licks your tears away, then tries to sit on your lap, it's hard to feel sad.

 I wanted to cry, I simply could not believe this amazing kindness.  Dresden handed the card back to me and hugged me. 

What can I add to that except to say: "Thank you from the bottom of my heart," to Devon, Adolfo, and most especially, Dresden, a 9-year-old jewel; for making this a Fourth of July I'll never forget.

The National Anthem: Musical Appropriation at its finest

Now that everyone has come out of their respective holiday weekend hot dog comas, shut down social media with pictures of all the cute kids dressed up in matching patriotic, albeit against flag code, ensembles and gotten back to the grind, let’s talk about the song you’ve been singing all weekend: the United States National Anthem.

You may recall in a column last month in which I talked about a teenager who didn’t know how old our country was, or why we had fireworks for Independence Day.

That face palm moment paled in comparison to the statement last week by an adult about General Washington taking the airports away from the British. Which got me to thinking, if the masses have been so consumed by technology and meme-able moments passing off as “history” that they don’t know what an errant faux pas that truly was, what do they know?

Hopefully, in fourth-grade history you learned that our National Anthem comes from a poem written on Sept. 14, 1814, by 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key. The poem was inspired by the 30-by-42 foot U.S. garrison flag, (currently with 15 stars and 15 stripes, commonly referred to as the as the Star-Spangled Banner), being  raised triumphantly that morning above Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor after watching the British Navy bombard the bastion.

This was three and a half decades after the motion was approved for the Declaration of Independence to be officially adopted in the Second Continental Congress on July 4th.

Anyway, back to Francis…

Key’s poem, entitled “Defense of Fort M’Henry,” was set to the tune of the Constitutional Anthem from the Anacreontic Society, a London men's social club (read: ridiculously wealthy men with nothing better to do for society than meet to celebrate music, food and drink.) "To Anacreon in Heaven," was popular in the U.S. at the time. Anacreon was a Greek poet from about 570 BC, and noted for his erotic poetry. Renamed the Star-Spangled Banner, it soon became well-known as a patriotic song.  

It was not considered the national anthem until1931-the year my grandmother was born- 117 years after it was written, and only then by a congressional resolution signed by President Hoover. Until that time, "Hail, Columbia" (1798), was used for most of the 19th century, then later "My Country, 'Tis of Thee” (1831), which also happens to be an appropriated tune. You may have noticed it’s the same music as the British National Anthem "God Save the Queen.”

As an aside, is anyone else giggling, knowing that our National Anthem was put to the tune of a notoriously bawdy drinking song, knowing what we do about the temperance movement and prohibition?

Did you know our National Anthem has four stanzas?  Here are the last three versus.

I’ll expect you to sing it with me at the next ball game.

 On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,

Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,

In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:

'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

 And where is that band who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion

A home and a country should leave us no more?

Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

 O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,

Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land

Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!

Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,

The scales have tipped

Those of you who read this column likely know that on November 29, 1947, the UN General Assembly passed the United Nation Partition Plan which made possible the establishment of the State of Israel.  However, what was possible in 1947 would be impossible today.  The scales have tipped, and they are against Israel.

Following World War II, the United Nations (UN) was created to replace the League of Nations for the purpose of preventing another major conflict.  There were four main goals outlined in its charter but boiled down and put into a nutshell, the UN was established to ensure a peaceful future for the world.  Initially there were 51 member states.  Today there are 193. Many of these “new” member states come from Africa and the Middle East and are primarily Muslim or aligned with the Muslim agenda.  The sheer number of these “new” member states stacks the deck against Israel at every vote.  While the United States, Israel’s stalwart Western friend and ally, still holds significant sway at the UN, we are not the powerhouse we once were.  This has little, if anything, to do with President Trump but everything to do with Islam’s desire to destroy Israel.  Furthermore, the majority of these “new” UN member states are members of, or affiliated with, the Non-Aligned Movement known as NAM.  What is NAM? It is the umbrella organization for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Is it any wonder that Israel comes under constant and harsh criticism and condemnation by the UN which is more focused on denigrating Israel than it is on human atrocities taking place in other parts of the world such as Libya, Iran, North Korea, Syria and others?  

Tiny Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East where its citizens, including its minorities, enjoy freedom and equality, is condemned more than mass-murdering dictatorships.  Insanity reigns as Israel is consistently held to a different and higher standard.  Yes, the scales are tipped against Israel. She needs friends now more than ever and she’s finding them within the worldwide Evangelical Christian community.  We must come together with one loud, pro-Israel, voice.  In Joel 3:2 the Bible says, “…there will I deal with and execute   judgment upon them for their treatment of My people (the Jews) and of My heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and because they have divided My land.” While it is currently considered politically correct to stand against Israel as is evidenced by the rising tide of anti-Semitism and BDS campaigns, we cannot honor God if we fear man.  Those who compromise the Word of God are a compromised people indeed and God says He will curse those who curse Israel (Genesis 12:3).

Bagpipes, Tree Tossing and Traditions

Life in the Carolinas

The stimulating sounds of bagpipes filled the air as I made my way from the parking area to the festivities of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. I look forward to this annual gathering that celebrates Scottish heritage, which has a significant place in the Carolinas.

In my visits to the Highland Games over the years, I have met many people of interest and learned much about the origins of many of the things that we do in the Carolinas. I've met great story tellers, musicians, shepherds and athletes who enjoy the caber toss, which is the sport of tossing a tapered pole made from a large tree.

The caber is around 175 pounds and just under 20 feet long. The objective is to toss it in such a way that it turns end over end, falling away from the tosser. I have watched many people participate in this activity, and I am convinced that this is not an easy feat. This sport, as well as all the others in the games, is done while wearing fashionable kilts with colored patterns that are synonymous with the wearers' family names.

It was several years ago at the Highland Games that I met the talented Joseph and Laralyn RiverWind. They were at a music exhibit that featured beautiful flute and harp music. It was from them that I learned about the term "Blessed Blend." In short, it was said that many years ago a Scotsman met a Native American woman and fell in love with her. This was at a time when such a relationship would not have been looked at in a good way. However, in this case the fellow must have had a friend in the Church, because before long the joining of a Scotsman with a Native American woman was proclaimed to be a "Blessed Blend," and so it has been from that time.

The thing that I enjoy most about the Highland Games, other than the fact that it is held in an amazing setting of nature, is that its purpose is to preserve, celebrate and learn from history. It's a bit like having a solid foundation to stand upon. It is not about being perfect, and it's not about being right and everyone one else being is wrong. If you look at Scottish history you will see that it is made up of different thoughts and ideas within its own heritage. As with most cultures, the clans (families) did not always get along with each other, but for sure they were all Scottish, and through the years a core group of people have kept the heritage and traditions alive.

I recall first meeting photographer Edgar Payne at the Highland Games. I have met governors, diplomats and royals at the games. I have meet people with great beards and people with scotch to share.

Scottish games are also held in other parts of the Carolinas, and some folks say they enjoy the smaller gatherings more because they are not as crowded. I actually enjoy both, but I do lean toward the energy that comes from the larger gathering at Grandfather Mountain.

I love the idea of our melting pot. However, I believe that there are ingredients within our American stew that have a noticeable flavor. The Scottish influence is certainly one of those ingredients that provides a wonderful contribution; it also blends well with others.

I'm not sure if it's the magic of the mountain air or the alluring power that has developed after 60 years of the gatherings being held at MacRae Meadows on Grandfather  Mountain that makes this such an enjoyable event. I’ve never worn a kilt, but if it were the only way to get in, I just might.

4-Do you think you’d be able to murder someone? No, I would panic.

5-Your favorite character right now from any work and why Right now right now, I’m really feeling Odasaku. Recently though it’s generally been Chuuya.

Are you named after someone Nah. And thank goodness because I hate naming after people. It was just my mum’s favourite name for a guy that didn’t have a freaky spelling. Her all time favourite was one of those Irish names that nobody can spell or pronounce.

When was the last time you cried Last Friday. I got super frustrated and I had a slight breakdown over overall stress and what may have been an anxiety attack and I always cry during anxiety attacks and I had to keep doing the same thing over and over and all my belongings kept breaking and I messed up an audition more than I’d ever messed up before and it was just a terrible day in general. Incidentally, I just got home and my right eye is running like mad so it looks like I’m crying on one side.

Do you like your handwritting My handwriting is illegible.

What is your favorite lunch meat Idk. I don’t normally have meat sandwiches or anything. I either just pack a snack (if I have to go out for work) because my appetite is so low in the mornings that entering the kitchen can turn my stomach, or I have breadsticks and dip. My fiancee did not buy breadsticks when she went shopping this week. I gave her a list, dang it.

I accidentally bought boot laces when I relaced them (which had to happen because the laces they came with were weird and elasticated and thus didn’t tie right) and so they’re super long and I don’t have the patience to septuple knot my laces after every dance practice. I have to take them off and put them on again several times a day, y’know. Or I just wear my Heavenly Host Theatre shoes, which are slip-ons.

Do you think you’re a strong person Physically, yes. Mentally/emotionally, maybe. Lots of people say I am, but...eh...

What is the first thing you notice about people Dunno. Whatever happens to stick out, it varies from person to person. For instance, my friend Phillip, when I sat next to him the day I met him, I noticed he only had one whole ear. The other had a large chunk from the top lopped off. Sakutaro, I noticed he was hella tan and hella strong and had a lip piercing. Sherwin, I noticed he was short and feminine looking.

What is the least favorite physical thing you like about yourself Uuuummm...oily skin and hair and how prone I am to certain illnesses and conditions? As a dancer, I am eternally frustrated that I’m not as flexible as my friend, even though he teaches ballet so he should be hella flexible. Also how much taller than my fiancee I am.

What color pants and shoes are you wearing right now Uhhh...black with white stripes, mismatched socks, one is blue and white stripes, the other is a sort of grey-green with a picture of Jiraiya on it and some writing in yellow and white. I own two pairs of shoes, neither of which I am wearing right now, but there’s a silver pair and a brown pair. The brown pair is for work only.

What was the last thing you ate Crisps. It was one of those ‘grab a snack for lunch’ days so that’s literally all I’ve had today. They were salt and vinegar flavour.

Summer or winter Winter. Winter means warm hugs and cozyness and before we got a new microwave it meant I could cuddle up with one of those scented heatable teddies but apparently I can’t put it in this microwave because reasons. Summer I get sweaty and heatstrokey and dancing is horrible and gross. Also this winter it actually snowed for the first time since I was, like, 15.

What book are you currently reading Uhh...I’m not really reading any books right now. I used to read constantly...I did start rereading the Skulduggery Pleasant series and trailed off on Last Stand, and I’m also working on (but have read through) a script for a play called Decades. I also started but never finished a Red Dwarf book.

Who do you miss right now No-one especially...I suppose I was talking about an old school friend recently (because we were playing Corpse Party again (hence the slight influx of CP related posts) and we got to Tooth and got talking about a guy we knew called Cai and a guy we currently know also called Cai and a kid I used to babysit called Kai who had a neat afro) and damn now I miss the kid I used to babysit...and now I miss all the children I’ve ever babysat. i just wanna cuddle and eat grapes.

my body is tired, but my face isn’t sleppy yet.

i mark anthony martinez the third (minus 2) hereby place my word on it, that i will have two videos out within the next week. promise promise.

what do i talk about in these again? i actually thought of something earlier but i always forget before i actually sit down to write..

my systems exam was today. the only midterm cause we switched professors the week before spring break and stuff. the midterm worth 30%. Well I mean, my heat transfer exams are also worth 30%. wait no, well yes, the first was 25%, then 30%, then the final is 30% as well and HW is 15 i thinks. but yeah honestly, i was not in a good spot 30 minutes into the exam. i couldn't get the long problem to work out and i was low key freaking. like i was frustrated and i just could not get the numbers to make sense and the stupid cauchy residue theorem wasn't cancelling out with anything and i literally had no idea wha the other two questions were asking. it legitimately flashed through my head that i might fail the course and have to end my life. KIDDING (okay it’s probably not appropriate to say that, but yes if i couldn't graduate next year i’d be incredibly upset forever). But yeah i was in a bad spot, both on the exam and mentally i was shook. but i paused, drank water, chillaxed, looked around the room for a bit, thought about people who’s smiles are too big for their faces and got down to business. i went ham the final 20 minutes, got the first problem to work out nicely (although i still had no clue on how to do the final part of it) i did the majority of that problem and should get most of those points. the third problem, that i initially had no clue how to even approach, actually ended up not being that bad and i completely worked through it and got the same answer as all my friends so pretty sure thats a gimme gimme 25 puntos. the second problem, i still really dont get what the legit way to do it was, but i kinda jerry-rigged an answer with some logic and a formula on my equation sheet and i actually think i did it right somehow. probs didn't get all the points there, but if i copped half of those, I'm happy. if i’m being honest, i think I'm looking at somewhere around a 70, which will probably be easily above the average. yay go me.
