Hey I've got a question about varians tangled trials? If you don't mind - which kingdom is which element? (Like how Corona is light yk)

Just bc the answer seems to vary on the fan and I'm curious which is which here

Yeah, there are different takes. I believe by the time I entered fandom (May-ish 2020) someone else had assigned Kingdoms to elements but I hadn't seen that. I assigned Kingdoms to elements mostly by using what we know of the kingdoms from the episode "Beginnings" which features the Contest of Crowns. I paired that with what I knew about Nuru, Yong, Hugo, and Donella

Admittedly a ton of my decision making went off of looks which is very shallow, but in my defense that is a very Disney way to go about things so I'd like to imagine it made VTT feel more Disney. I knew Yong was from the Fire Kingdom and Yong is Fantasy!Chinese. There were no Chinese looking princesses but there were south asian ones. So I imagined Bayangor as a kind of mix-asian kingdom and made it fire. I knew Nuru was from the Air Kingdom. Nuru is a black character and unfortunatly, Tangled the Series gave us only one kingdom populated by black princesses, and that was Koto. So I made Koto the air.

Hugo and Donella are from the Iron Kingdom. They are from a technologically advanced kingdom. Well, one Kingdom showed up the contest of crowns with a giant mech. So it made sense Ingvarr was where Hugo and Donella come from. So Ingvarr was Iron.

Obviously Corona is Light and The Dark Kingdom is Dark.

So that left Water and Earth. Honestly, I could have gone either way with these. Making Galcrest water was honestly Avatar: The Last Airbender's influence because Galcrest's princesses had a inuit look to them which reminded me of the Water Tribes from ATLA. So Galcrest became water and Neserdnia was left to be earth.

(Pittsford's aesthetic was just not interesting to me... at all... and obviously I could have made Equis one of the Kingdoms. That might have been fun. But that one didn't seem to fit into any of the elements in a meaningful way so I didn't worry too much about it. And anyway, Equis and its characters aren't really tied to Varian's story as much as other characters I decided to cameo instead.)

Explanation of this au>>

So if u have been following me for a while u prob know abt my villain au (or as I usually call it the au where Varigo take over Corona). This is the same au just from Nurus pov. Bc I was thinking abt this au again and what happens with Yong and Nuru. In this post I'm gonna be explaining all the lore for this au so u might wanna get comfy lol.

First let's start with Nuru bc that's what these drawings are Abt. (Quick tw for trypophobia)

In this au Nuru goes searching for a way to stop the meteor shower that destroys her kingdom in doing so she finds a stone which can restart time so every night she goes onto her balcony and restarts the day (like miss peregrines home for peculiar children) but this stone does have a limit. If she goes too far back in time it becomes excruciatingly painful and could kill her bc... (Drumroll) The stone is slowly corrupting and killing her body! Yay :D if she uses the stone for too long it will completely corrupt her body and kill her. Her dying would look like a mix between Luz's dying scene and this scene in a junji ito book. The magic would basically rot her insides and burn out through her skin :p

As long as she doesn't overuse her powers she shouldn't die for at least 45 ish years. U can already see corruption in her hair and eyes tho. Nuru desperately wants to find another way to save her kingdom but if she leaves for too long the meteor shower will destroy the kingdom and she doesn't want to burden another with the powers of the stone. So that's why she allies with Corona to find another solution. Koto has now become a very powerful kingdom due to Nuru's powers and has many allies (I will talk more Abt that later). Nuru and Varian are pretty similar in this au (I'll also talk abt that more a bit later) but Nuru tends to be more sure Abt her decisions and is less out of it than Varian. Nuru is also very possessive almost? And doesn't like criticism. Like REALLY doesn't like criticism (do with that info as u please) Also the song in the first drawing is queen of hearts by flailing idiot.

Amber

I'm doing amber next bc I don't have as much to say Abt her. Amber finds out that she has more family (Varian) and sets out to find him. When she does find him Varian is very skeptical of her. At first Amber tried to see the good side of Varian but inevitably can't deny he's insane. But she ends up finding out his sob story and decides to help (she's big on family in this au). Varian still isn't rlly sure what to think abt her but hey free labour so who cares.

One day whilst Koto and Corona are having some kinda transaction or whatever Nuru just kinda sees Amber and is like. That one. I want that. Varian is kinda like alr I don't rlly care Abt her. And they essentially have an arranged marriage but they learn to love each other (and honestly have the healthiest relationship in this au).

Yong/allies

I didn't have a huge amount planned for Yong at first but here's what I'm thinking. In this au Bayangor is a very poor Kingdom. One day whilst Nuru was searching for a way to save her kingdom she visits Bayangor and comes across an incredibly smart kid. She invites him to join her journey and promises that if she finds a way to stop the meteors his family can live in her castle bc he doesn't deserve to live in the streets. Basically after that Nuru practically adopts Yong lol and Bayangor becomes a close allie to Koto a big reason for that being despite how poor and small the kingdom is it does actually have some pretty good fuel resources. But no other kingdoms ever try to become allies because of how dead Bayangor looks.

I was gonna talk abt Varigo and Nuru and Varians similarities as well but idk if Tumblr has a word limit bc that will prob be triple how much is written here and this already super long😅 so I'll do it in the next post I have so much more to say but I'll put it all in the next post!!

Hello there! I'm Varian Ruddiger: the Royal Engineer of Corona and the top alchemy whizz of Team Radical, if I do say so myself. I'm really glad to be here, in the company of so many science enthusiasts!

Out of the aforementioned science enthusiasts, there was one who really stuck out to me. Yong Aithne of Bayangor. He's a real smart kid and he reminds me so much of myself at his age. Plus, he's really passionate when it comes to fireworks and despite his many accidents, he always has good intentions and his plans are actually pretty good!

There's also Hugo Rottewange of Ingvarr. For the most part, he's the most annoying, bratty person I've met in my life, but there are times when he's actually helpful and when he is, he's amazing, smart and stunning um yeah ignore that last point. He's just really helpful unless he's being himself or arguing with Nuru which is when things REALLY go downhill. But all in all, he's imaginative and good with his hands, I mean, he made Olivia! Sure says something about him, huh?

With that said, any asks and mentions are encouraged!

I also head canon that after Eugene becomes king (because he’s an only child), and Raps and he get married, The Dark Kingdoms (Bayangor, I think?) and Corona integrate into one Kingdom, probably after the events of Vat7k because Vat6k doesn’t sound or look right.

Scene: Varian and Yong meet for the first time

A sunny autumn morning. VARIAN is walking through the kingdom of Bayangor for the first time, curiously observing how different life seems in the fire kingdom. Suddenly, he bumps into YONG who falls down and drops the explosive materials he was carrying. 

YONG (nervously) 

AH! I'm sorry, sir, I wasn't looking where I was going… 

VARIAN 

No, no, it's okay, I also wasn't paying attention. 

Yong crouches down to pick up his materials and Varian hurries to help him. He stops when he sees just what it was that Yong was carrying. 

VARIAN (under his breath) 

Carbon, potassium nitrate and sulfur? 

YONG (excited) 

You know what this is!? 

VARIAN (confused) 

Umm… Yeah? Why are you carrying this… ? 

YONG

I'm making fireworks! You know, for the contest. 

VARIAN

What contest? 

YONG

You never heard of the contest!? 

Yong looks at Varian, taking in his appearance which is quite different from the Bayangoran clothes and fashion. 

YONG

You aren't from around here, are you? 

VARIAN

Well, no… I'm from Corona actually. 

YONG

That's far away… What are you doing here? 

VARIAN

I'm looking for something… Well, it's not important. What's this contest you were talking about? 

YONG  

It's the biggest firework show in Bayangor! Each contestant makes their own fireworks and the one who puts up the best show wins!  I've always wanted to take part in that but my parents didn't let me, saying I'm way too young to be playing with explosives or something. This year, I'll finally start! 

VARIAN

Woah… A firework show? I've never heard of anything like this… And you'll be making the fireworks all by yourself? 

YONG

Pretty much…  Unless you want to help me. You seem to know some stuff about the materials so maybe you know how to make an amazing and outstanding firework. 

VARIAN

I happen to know some things and I'd love to help you but I have to find… this something I'm looking for. Yeah. 

YONG

And what are you looking for? 

VARIAN 

(Sighs) 

I don't really know. It could be anything…  

Varian takes out his mother's journal and quickly searches for something while Yong is looking at him curiously. 

VARIAN

Do you have a ‘pretty huge statue’ somewhere around here? 

YONG (confused) 

You mean The Dragon Monument?

VARIAN

You have dragons here!? 

YONG

No, no… From what I remember the guy who they built the statue for loved fighting with fire and they called him Dragon because of that. It isn't far from here actually. I can show you if you want? 

VARIAN

You'd really do that? 

YONG

Yeah! And maybe once you're done with whatever you're doing you could help me with the fireworks? 

VARIAN (laughing)

winter solstice today. i wish i could’ve made a tts drawing bc i think they celebrate yule/the winter solstice in corona instead of christmas or anything but alas 🫡

oh well. hc time. they all kinda spend the holidays like kids of divorced parents tbh LOLL….. the royal family are very involved in corona’s holiday traditions and rapunzel really just loves Being with people so shes busy with her family and partners all day….like they always host a big feast at the castle where everyone is welcome and raps makes sure nobody leaves without presents. she picks out gifts especially for all the castle staff too!!! so all in all shes SUPER busy on the actual day of the solstice. rapunzels the kind of person who already started planning for the holidays in october. shes probably been making presents since like july. girl is PREPARED

varian and hugo usually stay with quirin for the holidays because they dont like all the big crowds at the capital, but later in the day they always try to make it for the party. lance and the girls go ALL OUT like theyre dressing up and hes making a huge breakfast and everything. their house always has the most decorations on it. also bc they live nearby quirin and the boys usually end up joining them for breakfast and they collectively have SOOO many sweets the girls make themselves sick

but the whole family always gathers at the castle at the end of the day to have a little sleepover and exchange gifts the next day teehee :3

its very based on ancient germanic paganism and how people celebrated the solstice before christianity took over. so there are a few traditions i like to pull from that, like hanging dried oranges on evergreen trees as a symbol of the sun, representing the return of light and warmth during the winter season!! since they follow the solar/lunar cycles very closely, the long night and the sunrise that follows is like a “rebirth” of the sun and its honestly very akin to a new years celebration for them even though its. Not the new year LOL.

they all exchange gifts both bc. yk. love and friendship and stuff and because it represents the “gift” of life given to them from the heavens. the whole celebration is very engrained in coronan culture so most people will celebrate regardless of whether they follow the sun or another celestial power….i think maybe the dark kingdom has different traditions but i havent fully fleshed that out yet.

nuru and yong both have different celebrations in their own kingdoms (like bayangor definitely has something akin to chinese new year) so they usually cant make it for yule, but team radical always try to get together early in the year. if not after the holidays, they always make it in time for varian’s birthday in march ^_^

VARIAN is walking through the kingdom of Bayangor as the sun is setting, enchanted by the city lighting up before him as the sky begins to darken, suddenly there was a yell from nearby and soon after YONG came barreling towards Varian on a large, out of control firework rocket

YONG (yelling) 

Watch out! 

Yong  jumps off the rocket and tumbling to the ground with a “Oof..” Varian yelps and ducks out of the way of the firework rocket 

VARIAN

 Woah!

Varian sits up from the ground and watches the runaway firework fly through an empty alleyway 

YONG

Oh no! 

Yong runs over to Varian. 

YONG (frantically) 

I’m so sorry sir! Are you okay?

VARIAN (reassuringly) 

I-I’m okay. What was that all about?

YONG

Varian meeting Yong

(I know someone already did this but I’m doing it too)

Vat7k plotholes and how to fill them part 2

Why would the kingdom of koto not move locations?

1, give them a curse so no matter where they move the meteor's follow. This can lead to a prophecy or something.

2, it requires the vote of all SEVEN kingdoms to move and one of them didn't vote. Or they were out voted. This can lead to conflict involving Nuru.

3, their culture literally runs into the ground and they don't feel like giving it up. Like the popular catacombs under the castle where a trial can be located.

Why is Donella trying to get to the eternal library?

1, she wants to apologize to ulla. She feels bad about how things ended and wants to make amends. Not let ulla out, she lost her mind in that library. Varian's involvement ends the reconcile plan because he wants to free the incredibly dangerous woman.

2, she wants to kill ulla and end things for good.

3, she purely wants to stop Varian from freeing ulla. Ulla is not stable after 18 years of solitude and is a danger to others. Or she knows ulla can't survive outside the library and doesn't want Varian to go through that pain.

Why does Donella send Hugo to complete trials instead of doing them herself? (Before they run into Varian)

1, she wants Hugo to learn how to do things on his own that would usually take multiple people.

2, she is intentionally sending Hugo to his death. She can feel Hugo slowly slipping away and she seemingly can't pull him back. Now she needs to kill him indirectly before he causes problems.

3, she knew Varian was coming and Decided that it would be easier for Hugo to join him then fight for the totems.

4, the curse ulla cast on her doesn't just lock her out of the eternal library but also the trials.

How does Hugo talk his way into the group?

1, he fakes an injury or actually get seriously injured. This leads Varian taking him in, out of compassion and Hugo just stays with them no problem.

2, he reasons with Varian. They both want the same thing it would be easier to team up than to constantly fight over the totems. It surprisingly works but Varian is always on Hugo watch at first.

3, he plays the pity card. He's a poor orphan who has no choice to steal, he never wanted to hurt people. But if Varian let him join than he won't have to steal anymore for some reason. And Varian falls for it.

How does the group not know Varian is a former criminal if the wanted posters were everywhere?

1, Nuru and Hugo know but don't say anything out of respect/blackmail. Yong doesn't have a clue.

2, the kingdom of Corona didn't tell the other kingdoms out of embarrassment of being nearly defeated by a 14 year old.

3, Yong knows because Bayangor is closest to Corona. Nuru knows because she's royalty. And Hugo knows either by his travels or Donella told him.

ALCHEMY BROS HEADCANNONS PART 4!!!!!

I clearly have too much time on my hands. Also, my fic and animatic are taking FOREVER. So take this as a peace offering!

Jacky once tried to play the lute. Varian reports that its sound made Ruddigar goes into a crazed frenzy. Apparently it did the same to Belle.

Belle is half Asian.

Her Mom was White. Her Father was Asian.

She actually bonded with Yong over sharing a common culture.

Hugo is clearly not a criminal any more. But he still has a mischievous streak. One time Eugene caught him trying out his skin care kit! To escape, Hugo just yeeted himself out the window! Everyone almost had a heart attack, until they found him hanging from the castle tangled up in one of the banners. He looked like a disgraced, guilty cat. 🤣

Ulla and Quirin have date nights to make up for lost time.

Those nights are the craziest, because most of the time, the kids are left to their own devices. One time they came home to find all four siblings acting out a scene from a Flynn Rider book!

Varian has a secret stash of sandwich making supplies and no one has ever been able to find it. It annoys Hugo to no end.

Hugo and Varian do not like the cold. As soon as they get home, it's hot chocolate and warm blankets. For Varian, it gives him bad memories of the blizzard. For Hugo, he just hates being cold.

Belle is even worst! She just refuses to go outside when it snows.

Belle, Nuru, Amber, and Vex formed their own girl group.

In return, Hugo joins Team Awesome

(EDIT) I just realized that Hugo shares a character trait with each Team Awesome member! Him and Lance are all about preforming and putting on a show. Him and Eugene both are consciencous about their looks and they like to be fashionable. And him and Varian are of course both science nerds! So he'd fit right in!

Hugo is the family fashion consultant. No one in his house is going to a gala or party without proper dress!

Ulla loves kids! She is practically the mom of every kid in Old Corona.

Hugo will sometimes get little things like charms and decorations to put on Buttercup's collar.

Belle's dog Cutlass is a rottweiler. Belle stole him from Donella's kennels in her escape from the lair. That had bonded previously while she was still working for Donella.

Varian's dog Frankie is a Border collie/Golden Retriever mix. He takes more after the Collie side.

Hugo's dog Buttercup is also a Border collie/Golden Retriever mix. But she takes more after the Retriever side.

Jacky eventually gets a pet. A parrot he names Leo.

Yong's newt Freckles plays checkers with Pascal.

Varian's evil laugh is just natural. He can't help it.

Varian and the 7K headcanon: Hugo is a Baron, Nuru is the youngest Princess of Koto, and Yong is the only Prince of Bayangor.

So, first off, to clarify a little more, Donella and Ulla were working together to get to the Eternal Library, Ulla documenting everything that happened in her journal.

So when Varian found the journal, he believed that Donella was good and wanted to find her, only to get attacked by her later on. Donella was also the one who trapped Ulla in the library in the first place.

Another interesting thing is how they met Hugo. So, this scene is shown in "canon" comics by the creators of vat7k. Yong and Varian had completed the fire trial in Bayangor, and had reached the totem. Hugo had been following them the entire time, not solving any of the puzzles, and when they reached the totem, he stole it before Varian and Yong could grab it. They attempted to stop him, but Hugo threw a smoke bomb with sulfur in it and got away. He brought it to Donella, but once she learned that Varian was Ulla's son, she told him to join the group as a spy. Varian didn't like him, and didn't want him to join, but he eventually joined anyway.

Hugo's backstory is that he grew up in the same orphanage as Eugene and Lance, and ran away to live on the streets. He was found by Donella, who noted his skills in theft and engineering, and she took him in. She assigned him to various different jobs, one of which was with Eugene (who he doublecrossed)

I wanted to make a small correction to the previous explanation while adding some more information- when they reached the Eternal Library, Donella revealed that Hugo was working for her. Varian, upset because he had trusted Hugo, ran into the library to find his mom. Varian/Ulla tried to attack Hugo, and eventually Hugo was basically brought down like the absolute loser he is, and starts talking to Varian to try and get through to him. He eventually confesses his love and Varian is able to break free and then Ulla dies and stuff

As well as this, when they go to do the Earth Trial, they meet Varian's mom's family. And it's like, a HUGE family. After living with just himself and his dad for so long he's like in shock cause he has a whole family that doesn't even know about him (and the fandom is evil and named one of his cousins Amber). He is torn between staying with them or continuing on his journey. He obviously chooses the journey.

Something else that's interesting is that all of the trials are based on different alchemy things and different chemical reactions. As well as this, the characters are based off of different sciences, like Varian is alchemy, Nuru is astronomy, Hugo is an engineer, and Yong works with pyrotechnics and fire, so they help each other. Yong is 12, Nuru is 16, Varian is 18 and Hugo is 19. The journey goes over 2 years
