This chapter Wyll corrects and comments on Tav's entry about the party's exploration of the overgrown ruins in a creept as best practice. Note that there is no need to read the whole series to enjoy this goofy journal romp through Act 1.

Hello spurgie! My friend adopted a pregnant stray recently who just had her puppies and I'm thinking of adopting one. Just curious if you have any advice for brand new puppy owners! What has changed the most for you since you brought your puppy home? Thanks!
Aw that's so exciting! I definitely have a lot of thoughts lol
My main advice for before puppy comes/the first days:
1. If you can, research the breed as much as possible. I know your friend's dog is a stray so that might be difficult, but if they seem like there's a big chunk of any breed in there, researching that will still help you understand some of your pup's quirks. Additionally, if you're looking up advice, make sure it's small/medium/large dog-specific because recommendations can vary a lot (esp if you can't nail down a breed).
2. Please be realistic about the amount of time you can actually focus on the dog. Super young puppies require a LOT of time and attention, they're like newborn babies with working legs, vampire teeth, and no diapers, so just be sure you are being honest with yourself about the amount of time you can commit. They're going to require training from everything from eating to sleeping to pooping and during waking hours pretty much need your attention as much as possible. While it's totally possible to have a puppy as a single person (I'm not sure if you are, it just sounded like it from the ask) I've been reading a ton of unhappy, exhausted, remorseful posts on r/puppy101 lately from single people who work outside home.
3. Be realistic about the amount of money you're prepared to spend on the puppy also, shit adds up quick.
4. Speaking of r/puppy101, definitely check that out it's so helpful!
5. Try to find a little corner of your house gate off for your pup and I highly recommend investing in a crate! Especially if you travel a lot like we do. Also, puppy pads puppy pads puppy pads.
6. Try to get your puppy on a consistent sleeping/eating schedule asap. It makes so much difference.
The biggest thing that has changed for me is free time!!! Since it was just me, Mr. SC, and 2 cats before I was pretty used to doing whatever I wanted whenever I wanted lol and now I am beholden to the schedule of this little black and white potato. We (the humans) are still trying to figure out what a normal productive day looks like around the one we're trying to get Jack to stick to, and sometimes that means me working til 10pm, or eating McDonalds 2 meals in a row, or scheduling grocery runs 2 weeks in advance. My hair washing schedule has also gained an additional like, 2 days lol.
If you have any questions feel free to message me!! If you do decide to get the puppy I wish you all the luck, it's hard sometimes but they're so funny and fascinating it's completely worth it (and the crazy stage doesn't last forever, or at least that's what I keep telling myself 🥴).

tag game
thanks for the tag @keyflight790
Rules: Name ten favourite characters from ten different things (TV, movies, books, etc.), then tag ten people.
Tagging: @plantboipotter @gallifrey1sburning @milo-ren-solo @xebastii @wizarding-world-of-draco-malfoy @harryromper @flangstywankers @dracoismytrashson @serenefreakgeek @nettleforest
These aren’t ranked in order of favorites because I have a nasty habit of falling in love with people who don’t fucking exist so like, I love them equally. This is also not by any means an exhaustive list, mostly just a mix of recent new favs + rewatches.
1. Jaskier/Dandelion - The Witcher
my beautiful Slytherin DRAMA QUEER (you know what, I’m gonna let that autocorrect stand bc it’s even more accurate)
2. Alucard Emery - Shades of Magic trilogy
BISEXUAL 👏 SHIP 👏 CAPTAIN
This series has so many phenomenal characters and it’s really hard to choose just one because like, Kell and Lila and Prince Rhy and even the villains are fascinating EVERYONE PLEASE GO READ THESE BOOKS.
3. Willow - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
or faith. Or Anya. Or Buffy herself, this show was so badass and one of the few true girl power shows of my childhood that didn’t just feel like obvious pandering girl power, ya know? Also Willow was my first bi-con and I Stan. ALSO, VAMPIRE WILLOW 😩❤️
4. Alyssa - The End of the F***ing World
She’s just such a piece of shit and I see entirely too much of my college self in her but I love her even more for it. Also, to quote @plantboipotter: ACCENT
5. Draco Malfoy - you fuckin’ know what from
My son. My actual child. I love him so much, and he deserved a GODDAMN REDEMPTION ARC so much more than Snape. Okay but truly, I don’t think I’ve ever seen another character with as much potential ever. You could write a million stories about the man Draco grows up to be.
6. Peter - To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
This is really just a love letter to Noah Centineo more than anything, but what an absolute sweet potato. I love his wholesome little “whoa whoa whoas.” Furthermore: eyebrows. That is all.
7. Scorpius Malfoy - Cursed Child
Cursed Child can eat my entire ass but in the vein of wholesome root vegetables, Scorpius is by far my favorite next gen character to see in fic. I love the way the fandom writes him, and he always has the cutest warm fuzzy friends-to-lovers plots with Albus. Plus I just really love Dad Draco 😍
8. Kat Stratford - 10 Things I Hate About You
HOW can you even pick a favorite character out of this dynamite fucking ensemble you CANT but I’ll try. I love Kat so much. I resonate with her guarded exterior, with her big dreams, her pessimism and rebellious spirit, but most importantly with her desire to make out with a young heath ledger yes GOD. 😂 Seriously though, she’s just great and I totally would have been her Shakespeare dork friend listening to bad girl punk with her in our black-walled bedrooms.
9. Alice Cullen - Twilight
LISTEN.
I fuckin’ hate Twilight, alright? It’s toxic trash. Rubbish. Garbagio. BUT, 12yo me was obsessed. That book series really sparked my love of reading and led me to discover fanfic and creative writing bc the characters were so cool and I wanted to be friends with them and I felt like there was just so much more to their stories. I especially loved the concept of Alice, and I used her for a ton of early attempts at writing (which I have since lost/ burned so no you can’t see them, thank Merlin.)
10. Geralt - The Witcher
You know what, I tried real hard not to repeat any universes here, but this man is dreamy af and it simply can’t be helped.

I'm intrigued: Assuming you have full creatice control, what would you change about A Discovery of Witches to make it less 'watching requires to shut your brain off'?
Well, as a preface, a show asking its audience to shut their brains off isn’t necessarily bad—I’m a firm believer in a well-rounded media diet, which includes four-course meals featuring duck confit but also potato chips. There are shows (books, movies) that are absolutely essential to me, while still being very dumb; I am happy that A Discovery of Witches allows me to be shiveringly delighted by Matthew Goode’s face, even if I am simultaneously required to shut off the part of my brain that might accidentally try to evaluate it.
(And part of this, I think it’s fair to say, is embarrassment for the entirety of 2005, when the school librarian put Twilight in my hands and said “tell me what you think,” and my response was to immediately recommend it to every weirdo nerd in my girl scout troop. So. Please be aware this is exactly what I think about when Matthew Goode’s only vampire traits are “smell” “hunger” and “running fast.”)
All that being said!
Every single secondary character is a paper-thin excuse for exposition. The plot is somehow simultaneously dragging—nothing of significance actually happened in the last two episodes—and yet feels incredibly rushed via a barrage of scenes that have no consequence; as a result, the plot feels unmoored, removed from any organic character development or decisions.
Blonde Oxfordian has made no decisions! Matthew Goode makes all the decisions, and also delivers a lot of exposition, and while I quite like looking at Matthew Goode’s face when his mouth moves, this is not how you construct a narrative. (Even the romance—while I, personally, am on board with Matthew Goode’s face and making out with it, there’s no build up, there’s no organic development. The story has decided on Point B and so it goes there, it doesn’t bother showing us why Point B is a natural extension of Point A.)
Additionally, so much of the general worldbuilding is…quite derivative? For instance, I love the idea that the various magical races have a dedicated spot where they get together to discuss their future together, even if they don’t get along and hold extreme prejudices in day-to-day life. But it’s presented as run of the mill, secret society with magic! Why not introduce some hilariously mundane and frustrating bureaucracy, some petty intra-politics, some fraught romances or whatever. Do something different, or why bother.
Still, if I were given complete creative control, I would probably restrict my changes to:
1) Slow the romance the fuck back down. We’re going for some painfully restrained Victorian erotic bullshit here, it should be unbearable lingering looks and Matthew Goode looking annoyed and guilty when people guess he’s craving her and Blonde Oxfordian insisting that She Doesn’t Know What You’re Talking About, He’s Just The Only Person Who Will Talk To Me, But Also I Think A Lot About How He Told Me Not To Run Who Could Possibly Guess What That Means???
2) Expand the Actual Plot, and give the secondary characters more of a role in it. I love Matthew’s lab techs! I am extremely fascinated by Blonde Oxfordian’s lesbian aunts! I think Molly From Sherlock But Ginger could have an epic backstory! Unfortunately, they are not given much to work with; give them some stuff. If you want to have Matthew and Blondie falling in love and forgetting about the potentially world-altering stuff going on around them, fine, give it to others so they can run with it.
3) A Goddamn Sense of Humor. Almost all narrative sins can be forgiven if a TV show doesn’t take itself so seriously. The show as it stands is so stiff in its execution, so determined to accept its premise in a straightforward and entirely, utterly earnest way…it’s a pity, because vampire Matthew Goode cracking a joke or two about the music of the night, or Molly from Sherlock But Ginger talking about how “well, you know so-and-so, ever since she discovered the Goddess, it’s been ‘ooh, naturalism this, and ooh, homeopathy that.’” would be absolutely hilarious. I would be more inclined to watch the show, if I knew I’d get some quality humor out of it.

Wholesome Questionare Tag Meme
Tagged by @80sglamcowboy Rules are: -Post the rules -Answer the questions given to you by the tagger -Write eleven questions of your own -Tag eleven people
This is long as Hell, friends and I apologise.
One inquisitive bitch has asked me:
1. Name one person (real or fictional) that you think you could 100% take on in a fight
Foaming mouth guy from Avatar. He’s got no stamina, barely any health, no skill. He’s unfocused and weak and my noodley nerd-ass could take him. (Though I am a little concerned he has rabies.)
2. What’s your favourite snack rn
Grilled cheese w veggies, mustard, and grilled tofu w a side of ketchup made by my roommate. It’s honestly the purest thing.
3. Which apocalypse do you think you’d do the best in? (i.e. Nuclear winter/ robot uprising/ Too many vampires, etc)
O man. I love apocalypse movies and I love survival horror (that one episode of the X Files where they’re trapped in a cabin, anybody?). I also genuinely love camping and I’m a bit of a medical hobbyist. I also watched an unreasonable amount of prepper videos on YouTube. That said, as mentioned above, I am a couch potato weekling. Furthermore, I don’t do well in conflict so if the world hierarchy collapses into a power vacuum where you have to Orange is the New Black-style intimidate ppl for supplies, I would melt and die quickly.
My best bet, it would seem, is an Arrival-esque alien apocalypse where the ones who have enough patience and sci fi knowledge to communicate w aliens are at the top of the food chain. And worst case scenario it’s better for my ego to die at the hands of an alien than a human.
Sci go apocalypses are just cleaner y'know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
4. Best and worst fandom you’ve been in? Or have you somehow managed to avoid fandom completely?
Worst has to be Steven Universe. I regret not just moving on after I got bored. Ah well.
(I also think celebrity/real ppl fandoms are a dead end.)
My other fandoms all have various pros and cons and it’s hard to pick a favourite.
Adventure Time has great fanart, great meta and ppl have yet to descend into Homestuck-ian chaos. That said, they’re quiet af. People also fixate way too much on the fake fanfic AU Fionna and Cake. I have yet to read a really good Bonny/Marcy fic and that is a tragedy (a few have come close tho). Bottom line for AT tho is that it’s my go to wholesome cartoonist fandom. I like that it has depth but that it’s generally very simple and fun and that the fans are mostly shut in animation adults.
AtLA/LoK fandom’s biggest pro is that it’s huge and you literally never ran out of quality content. I’ve even made a few friends via this decade old franchise. It’s also enjoyably rich and complex. One of my favourite (now inactive) blogs was one that connected world building and little background Easter eggs to real Chinese history and culture. That wAs so cool!! I defs think as a Chinese person it allowed me to connect to non-western culture in a socially acceptable way.
The downsides tho are many: it can be overwhelmingly complicated (esp as someone who knows jack shit abt Chinese history), people take it too seriously, The Great Shipping Wars, it’s so big it’s a little lonely, the show itself has so many flaws upon greater inspection you wonder why you wasted your time on anything related to it, it’s an Asian themed story created by white dudes who make fun of their fans, the best parts of the show were written by other writers but those same white guys get k the credit. Also as w any fandom related to POC culture, racism happens. Anyways most of you know this already. IMO the best thing to have happened do the fandom is korrasami. Now it’s just abt Asian lesbians ruling the world.
(Though I also thoroughly enjoy the Family Rivalry part of the fandom. There are so mNy dysfunctional families to choose from!)
Rick and Morty is technically speaking my newest fandom. It’s got a lot of obvious cons (pickle Rick sexists, Szechuan sauce racists, asfhkkh incest) but one other con is just how pedantic and overly analytical people are abt the world building. I can’t breathe wo being corrected. RM has a misleadingly complicated high sci fi aesthetic that begets the kind of overanalysing my brand of overanalytical nerdiness can’t handle. Too many alternate universes. It’s just too complicated.
However one thing I like is that conversely I can overanalyse the writing and characters’ psychology/relationships (which I LOVE) and ppl take me very seriously. (At least they used to.) it’s kinda validating to have your 3k word essay on an old man’s bedroom and what that signifies for his depression get over 1k notes.
Rm also attracts the fun, super talented animation crowd so there’s boundless fanart and memes. I never knew I would like a gravity falls crossover retirement home AU btwn Rick and Stan so much but the art is objectively gorgeous?? So ??
I really dislike the lack of attention the female characters get from fandom bc they’re all really great? Female rep is limited but both canon and fic really do their 2-3 tokens justice. Also the jerry hatred is getting old (that male aggression… Like… Calm down, Jake) but it’s a refreshing departure drom when Megg from family guy was the butt of the joke.
Harry Potter, one of the pillars of nerd society, has both changed my life and irreconcilably annoyed me to death. (W no thanks to the racist creator herself!) One can’t underestimate how huge the hp fandom is which offers you as many reasons to love it as reasons not to. Harry Potter’s canon has complex world building that’s also charming enough not to take itself too seriously and much the same could b said of fanon. To a degree. Certain corners of the fanbase are fantastic shitposters and meme-ers and can draw you back in like a black hole. Casually enjoying Harry potter imo is where it’s at. The fanfic is probably one of the most impressively vast. Strangers at Drakesaugh, believe it or not, still updates and not only that, I still read it.
Not casually enjoying Harry potter is, um, yikes? HP and Hunger Games love to insert themselves appropriately in real life political traumas and honestly the dedication of the fandom can be overwhelming.
The HP fanart corner of deviantart circa 2010-12 and @flocc HP comics however are the best.
Meet the Robinsons, Ye Olde Fandom, still stands to this day. (Thanks in part to me ngl) As Iroh might say, they are a proud people. MTR is so bizarre and tiny it’s the only fandom I was able to read EVERY fic summary in existence (ones published on obscure sites excepted). The fandom has never ceased to surprise me for better or worse and mostly due to its age range. The original movie was intended for 8-12 yr olds and their (jaded) parents which means that now, ten years later, the fans are anywhere between 12 and 25. It has approximately 20 pieces of professional-grade fanart and fic and I am downright serious abt the quality and thoughtful complexity of this minority of fanart. Like I shit you not some of it’s almost too dark. However, tragically, one can’t talk abt obscure Disney fandoms wo also mentioning the incest ships (this is what happens when middleschoolers have to resort to cartoons to explore their sexuality in an anti sex ed world), the disorganised crossovers, and the blinding lack of imagination. Nonetheless, that a fandom of any kind could sprout from a 90 min cgi movie before the recession, based off an obscure but objectively fascinating children’s book, is still impressive. The fandoms smallness can in many wars work to everybody’s benefit: it’s a tightly knit community w little to no drama. And lots of memes (that I mostly make) to enjoy sincerely or ironically.
I’m also going to mention, very briefly, the Twin Peaks fandom, most of whom, even the die hards, are v casual when it comes to fan content (I need more fic damnit). Nonetheless it’s a decidedly cool art kid crowd for an art house show and I really enjoy befriending twin peaks watchers.
5. What’s one hot food that you prefer cold? (or, alternatively, one cold food you like hot)
Is it snobby to say I like food to be the temperature God intended?
Like I like cold pizza and salad-y pasta but I wouldn’t mind if everything were room temperature as long as the food itself was well made.
6. ya like jazz? What music do you enjoy listening to? Can you recommend any songs/ artists from that genre?
I think in some contexts I can like jazz. It’s very cosy and nostalgic, it can make you feel like a grand dame stepping out of your limo into your martini filled mansion as records pop around you and your fur carpeted living room. I also occasionally like jazz covers and alternate genres of jazz like electro swing etc.
Generally though I also think jazz is a little antiquated and a little all over the place. I lean more towards the ambiguous minimalism of mellow techno music like Jonna Lee, Grimes, Björk, early Lorde, Yasmine Hamdan, Austra, TRST, etc
I mean I don’t stick to just one genre (I imagine most ppl don’t). I like alternative (Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, Joanna Newsom) and some musicians who seem to completely exist outside of genre like iMonster and the Gorillaz. Not to mention straight up pop like broods, Ellie goulding, lady gaga and Lana del rey. (I mean technically Ldr isn’t pop but u get the ideer)
7. What binge worthy show do you like?
So many man. There are so many out there! Twin peaks, Transparent, Love, Grace and Frankie, Adventure Time, House of Cards, Bojack Horseman, Rick and Morty, Mad Men, Girls, Broad City, Black Mirror, Avatar TLA, 6Teen, Chowder, Over the Garden Wall, Flapjack, the first season of Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, etc
The list goes on. I’m a TV fiend.
8. What’s an old meme that you miss and wish would be brought back?
Always liked the Gothic [x town or whatever] meme. It was like a text post version of the cursed images meme. Currently I’m really enjoying the song from another room meme and I hope even after it gets old it’ll make a comeback.
9. Tell me your aesthetic
O man. That’s a can of worms! Okay. Deep breath.
I like futurism, of all kinds. I like strong lines and clear shapes. I like colour blocking and minimalism and glass and holographic LED neons. I like white Japanese urban tiled buildings. I like aliens and ruins and cubes and white and colour blocking and black. I like technology and aliens and Comme des Garçons and Issey Miyake. Rooms that are empty but for one light and one window and one plant. Love that.
I like the midcentury cubism and Mod and 30’s futurism. Clear and strong industrial shapes and curves and post modernist abstractionism.
I also love nature, I love most every Björk and Iamamiwhoami music video. I love the mountains and the forests and the desert and the winter tundra and most of all I love the water. A vast expanse of sky and sea w so many colours and textures. I love the 2000s and funny blob shapes and y2k’s obsession w secondary colours and shiny round things. Love pink. I am a grown adult who will never tire of pink. (Though I don’t really like when people overdo pink.) I love cursed image family photos taken with flash in a suburb. I love the grime and the sanitary aesthetic of suburbs and hospitals and brutalist office spaces. The fluorescent lights of the institution but with purple carpeting!
I love 70s mod and I love colorful 80s brutalism I like it when houses are shaped weirdly and they have carpets and polished curved wooden countertops and spacious nothingness where everything looks clean and cosy and bizarrely ugly and it all looks like an art gallery w too many plants.
I also really love maximalism and wood and detail and fur and velvet and embroidery and silk and windows and wood carvings.
I love 70s kitsch like John waters movies and Shrimps designer fake fur CDG17 where they just piled on knickknack after knickknack onto white dresses w food long trains. Toys and novelty items and lamps shaped like a woman’s leg in a fishnet stocking. (See also: most Tim burton movies, wes Anderson, Carrie fishers house)
An overwhelming mishmash of wool patterns with clean cubic 70s architecture and so many plants and windows and wallpaper and candles and cobwebs. Also really like witchy mourning jewelry and essentially every house in Harry potter. Love the unfortunately racist boho/hippie aesthetic. Any house designed by bill kirsch is a masterpiece. Woven baskets on the ceiling piles of hats and art supplies everywhere. Stuff!! Everywhere! Hidden passageways reading nooks fireplaces the Pink Palace from Coraline!
Everything!!!
I’m a cartoonist who’s a nerd for design so I like when concepts are taken to the extreme in a humourously charming and clear-minded way. Whatever aesthetic someone chooses, they should go all out and really dedicate themselves to the highest form of that aesthetic. It has to be perfect without being sanitary of fake. It has to be alive yet beautiful, frozen in one perfect moment.
10. Favourite time of day and why?
Dusk. I think it’s a nostalgia thing. I loved the hours before bed time as well the hours before dinner when it was getting dark and the sun was reflecting freaky colours along the horizon while I ran around the grass. It’s cozy but it’s spacious and adventurous. So many things can happen at dusk!
11. You have the choice to live in any fictional universe - which one do you pick and why?
Harry Potter!!! You get the best of both worlds: magical, over-romanticised Victorian/medievalism, wish-fulfillment surrealism and wifi. It’s great. Likelihood of dying is so low, medicine is so advanced and even then ppls n°1 choice of lethal weapon (Avada Kedavra) is painless. Me and Luna could hang in her garden. I’d never have to pay for the subway again. I could live a nomadic life in a tent w infinite space. If you chose to live as a wizard amongst Muggles you’re basically god and you can cheat capitalism. Gravity is my bitch! And I’m not gna lie my dream house has always been a combination of The Burrow, the Lovegood house, and Shell Cottage.
My turn to pick your brain:
1 Favourite texture?
2 Favourite smell?
3 Favourite children’s book/children’s TV show? (I’m talking about the bizarre abstract ones for toddlers)
4 Best and worst prank you’ve ever pulled?
5 Weirdest beginning of a friendship?
6 When you’ve been in fandom for a while you start to notice you’ve a habit of staying in the same corners. What corner are you in? Are you part of the fluffy ship corner? The intense world building spec meta corner? The shitpost comic fanart corner? Etc
7 If you could invent a class that would be obligatory for all high schools across your country what would it be?
8 What’s the weirdest thing you’ve gotten at Halloween while trick or treating?
9 Weirdest family tradition of yours?
10 Describe your significant other (or your crush, or your dream partner or if you’re aromantic your fave person) through only TV references.
11 Favourite piece of dialogue in a movie?
I don’t know 11 ppl but nonetheless tagging: @that-guy-in-the-bowler-hat @skairheart @nochangenohope @eventheslightestrayofsunshine@autistic-jaredkleinman@phoenixkluke
…and YOU (if you were not mentioned above and so choose to accept this mission)

Guillermo del Toro Gómez born October 9, 1964, is a Mexican American film director, screenwriter, producer and novelist. In his filmmaking career, del Toro has alternated between Spanish-language dark fantasy pieces, such as the gothic horror film The Devil's Backbone (2001), and Pan's Labyrinth (2006), and more mainstream American action movies, such as the vampire superhero action film Blade II (2002), the supernatural superhero film Hellboy (2004), its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), and the science fiction monster film Pacific Rim (2013). His latest film, The Shape of Water, won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and is scheduled for an American release on December 8, 2017.
In addition to his directing works, del Toro is a prolific producer, his producing works including acclaimed and successful films such as The Orphanage (2007), Julia's Eyes (2010), Biutiful (2010), Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011), Puss in Boots (2011), and Mama (2013). He was originally chosen by Peter Jackson to direct The Hobbit films; he left the project due to production problems but was still credited as co-writer for his numerous contributions to the script.
Del Toro's work is characterised by a strong connection to fairy tales and horror, with an effort to infuse visual or poetic beauty. He has a lifelong fascination with monsters, which he considers symbols of great power.[3] Del Toro is known for his use of insectile and religious imagery, the themes of Catholicism and celebrating imperfection, underworld and clockwork motifs, practical special effects, dominant amber lighting, and his frequent collaborations with actors Ron Perlman and Doug Jones. He is also friends with fellow Mexican directors Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu, collectively known as "The Three Amigos of Cinema”.
When del Toro was about eight years old, he began experimenting with his father's Super 8 camera, making short films with Planet of the Apes toys and other objects. One short focused on a "serial killer potato" with ambitions of world domination; it murdered del Toro's mother and brothers before stepping outside and being crushed by a car. Del Toro made about 10 short films before his first feature, including one titled Matilde, but only the last two, Doña Lupe and Geometria, have been made available. He also wrote four and directed five episodes of the cult series La Hora Marcada, along with other Mexican filmmakers such as Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuarón.
Del Toro studied special effects and make-up with special-effects artist Dick Smith. He spent 10 years as a special-effects make-up designer and formed his own company, Necropia. He also co-founded the Guadalajara International Film Festival. Later in his directing career, he formed his own production company, the Tequila Gang.
In 1997, at the age of 33, Guillermo was given a $30 million budget from Miramax Films to shoot another film, Mimic. During this time, his father, automotive entrepreneur Federico del Toro, was kidnapped in Guadalajara. Del Toro's family had to pay twice the amount originally asked. The event prompted del Toro, his parents, and his siblings to move abroad. In an interview with Time magazine, he said this about the kidnapping of his father: "Every day, every week, something happens that reminds me that I am an involuntary exile [from my country]
Del Toro has directed a wide variety of films, from comic book adaptations (Blade II, Hellboy) to historical fantasy and horror films, two of which are set in Spain in the context of the Spanish Civil War under the authoritarian rule of Francisco Franco. These two films, The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth, are among his most critically acclaimed works. They share similar settings, protagonists and themes with the 1973 Spanish film The Spirit of the Beehive, widely considered to be the finest Spanish film of the 1970s.
Del Toro views the horror genre as inherently political, explaining, "Much like fairy tales, there are two facets of horror. One is pro-institution, which is the most reprehensible type of fairy tale: Don't wander into the woods, and always obey your parents. The other type of fairy tale is completely anarchic and antiestablishment."
He is close friends with two other prominent and critically praised Mexican filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu.[15] The three often influence each other's directorial decisions, and have been interviewed together by Charlie Rose. Cuarón was one of the producers of Pan's Labyrinth, while Iñárritu assisted in editing the film.
Del Toro has also contributed to the web series Trailers From Hell.
In April 2008, del Toro was hired by Peter Jackson to direct the live-action film adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. On May 30, 2010, del Toro left the project due to extend delays brought on by MGM's financial troubles. Although he did not direct the films, he is credited as co-writer in An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies.
On June 2, 2009, del Toro's first novel, The Strain, was released. It is the first part of an apocalyptic vampire trilogy co-authored by del Toro and Chuck Hogan. The second volume, The Fall, was released on September 21, 2010. The final installment, The Night Eternal, followed in October 2011. Del Toro cites writings of Antoine Augustin Calmet, Montague Summers and Bernhardt J. Hurwood among his favourites in the non-literary form about vampires.
On December 9, 2010, del Toro launched Mirada Studios with his long-time cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, director Mathew Cullen and executive producer Javier Jimenez. Mirada was formed in Los Angeles, California to be a collaborative space where they and other filmmakers can work with Mirada's artists to create and produce projects that span digital production and content for film, television, advertising, interactive and other media. Mirada launched as a sister company to production company Motion Theory.[19]
Del Toro directed Pacific Rim, a science fiction film based on a screenplay by del Toro and Travis Beacham. In the film, giant monsters rise from the Pacific Ocean and attack major cities, leading humans to retaliate with gigantic mecha suits called Jaegers. Del Toro commented, "This is my most un-modest film, this has everything. The scale is enormous and I'm just a big kid having fun." The film was released on July 12, 2013 and grossed $411 million at the box office.
Del Toro directed "Night Zero", the pilot episode of The Strain, a vampire horror television series based on the novel trilogy of the same name by del Toro and Chuck Hogan. FX has commissioned the pilot episode, which del Toro scripted with Hogan and was filmed in Toronto in September 2013. FX ordered a thirteen-episode first season for the series on November 19, 2013, and series premiered on July 13, 2014.
After The Strain's pilot episode, del Toro directed Crimson Peak, a gothic horror film he co-wrote with Matthew Robbins and Lucinda Cox. Del Toro has described the film as "a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story", citing The Omen, The Exorcist and The Shining as influences. Del Toro also stated, "I think people are getting used to horror subjects done as found footage or B-value budgets. I wanted this to feel like a throwback." Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, and Charlie Hunnam starred in the film. Production began February 2014 in Toronto, with an April 2015 release date initially planned. The studio later pushed the date back to October 2015, to coincide with the Halloween season.[
He was selected to be on the jury for the main competition section of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
Del Toro directed the cold-war drama film The Shape of Water, starring Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Michael Shannon.[29] Filming was set to begin on August 1, 2016 in Toronto,[30][31] but del Toro confirmed on his personal Twitter account that filming would begin on August 15, 2016.[32] Production was officially announced to have begun on that day and wrapped twelve weeks later, the film is currently in post-production.[33] On August 31, 2017 the movie was screened and premiered in the main competition section of the 74th Venice International Film Festival where it was awarded the Golden Lion for best film, making Del Toro the first mexican director to win the award[34][35].
On July 21, 2016, it was reported that del Toro will retire from producing for projects that he isn't creating or directing himself.
At the D23 Expo in 2009, his Double Dare You production company and Disney announced a production deal for a line of darker animated films. The label was announced with one original animated project, Trollhunters. However, del Toro moved his deal to DreamWorks in late 2010. Trollhunters was released to great acclaim on Netflix and "is tracking to be its most-watched kids original ever

Random Stuff About Me
Got tagged by @ma-setheneran
Greetings to you! I haven’t talked to you that much ‘till now but thanks a lot for tagging me anyway. :D
Rules: Answer 19 questions and tag followers you would like to get to know.
1. NAME: Alex. I think it’s not too dangerous to give away my first name here. I mean, the world is filled with milions of Alexes and as long as you don’t get my full name, there’s no harm done. :) 2. NICKNAME: There are some in real-life. Due to my height and stature there are “Hobbit”, as a dear friend calls me, “Frodo”, as I’ve been dubbed while still at school and “Locke” (German pronounciation), referring to my hair, which is rather curly. 3. ZODIAC SIGN: Pisces. 4. HEIGHT: The nicknames give it away - I’m really smol. 1.59 cm, which is 5 ft, 2.6 in. 5. ETHNICITY: German potato here! :D (With some Italian mixed in by an ancestor more than 200 years ago) 6. ORIENTATION: Ask me something easier^^. I seriously have no idea whether it’s pansexual or something else. I really cannot find a label that perfectly suits me and I think it’s easiest to say I fall in love with people for their character and crush on them for their good looks, regardless of their gender. 7. FAVORITE FRUIT: Yes, gimme all the sweet tasty healthy stuff! Well, I used to love apples, but when I discovered I react to some of them, my interest switched to berries (blackberries and raspberries mostly) and I will always love bananas; the riper the better. And since tomatos are fruit, tto, botanically speaking, I think it’s just fair to add them here as well. 8. FAVORITE SEASON: Autumn. It’s like Spring, but backwards and without allergical reactions. 9. FAVORITE BOOK SERIES: Oh, that’s again a very hard pick. I grew up with and loved the Harry Potter series as a child, later discovered Anne Rice’s “Vampire Chronicles” and really liked the first few books of it as a teenager but right now I’ve come back to the one and only Arthur Conan Doyle and his Sherlock Holmes. (Besides that I’ve been reading a lot of biographies and more scientific texts lately, but this doesn’t count as “book series”, right?) 10. FAVORITE FLOWERS: So many, actually.... I have a huge fondness for every flower with a pleasant scent and or interesting shape. But mostly, I’d say orchids in their magnificent variety. I mean, just google some of them. 11. FAVORITE SCENT: My olfactory sense is... not the best, which is useful sometimes, but mostly kinda annoying. I think though, that freshly baked, still warm bread and Earl Grey are a wonderful combination. As is the air after a good rainshower and after someone has mowed their lawn. The combination is one of the best things in Summer. 12. FAVORITE COLOR: The green and blue spectrum, without specifying a certain colour. 13. COFFEE, TEA OR COCOA: Cocoa. Dude, don’t make me choose! D: (I prefer tea over coffee but in Winter there’s nothing like a big mug of hot cocoa) 14. AVERAGE HOURS OF SLEEP: Somewhere between five and eight, depending on the day of the week. I like to take afternoon naps while at the bus home as well. 15. CAT OR DOG PERSON: Honestly, I’m more of a dog person but am stuck with a -sometimes very dog-like- cat.. 16. FAVORITE FICTIONAL CHARACTER: Oh dear, there are so many I can relate to or just consider really cool/fascinating/whatever. A small selection of them might be Peregrin Took, Arya Stark, The Iron Bull and the Weasley twins. 17. DREAM TRIP: Iceland or Thailand, both for their history and nature and Iceland also for its beautiful volcanos and geology and Thailand for its wildlife and historical architecture. And the food. 18. BLOG CREATED: February 2017. 19. NUMBER OF FOLLOWERS: Right now 73, but I’ve realised that this number harldy grows, since people seem to unfollow me almost as quickly as they follow me, for whatever reasons. But for those who still stick with me, even though I’m sometimes doing not much more than fan stuff reblogging and German shitposting: I love all of you and really appreciate your company. Feel free to talk to me whenever you want, I think you are all really cool and interesting people! *hugs*
Aaaaah, right. Now it would be time for tagging some people. Feel free to answer. But you’re not obliged to do so. :) @hikingofthenoldor @snarkytroodon @mylovelettertonobody
(And I apologise for any typos. My laptop’s keyboard is a bitch and for whatever reason I can’t set English as my browser’s language, what makes it hard to find misspelled words.)

Arrow’s storytelling problems
I was originally going to tack this onto a response to an excellent piece by @eilowyn1 but it became SUPER long and I didn’t want to hijack her post. (But you should definitely read her thoughts, as my post is still in direct response to it. It’s also just a great read from the perspective of an aspiring screen writer).
Now, I’ve never had ambitions to be a screenwriter but the process of constructing a story fascinates me, and I’ve had a lot of thoughts about Arrow’s narrative issues for a while now. I guess today was the day to let them out.
Point 1:
This concerns the serialised vs semi-serialised TV structures @eilowyn1 mentioned:
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer, like The X-Files and Supernatural, is semi-serialized, and this is why I think it’s more successful: there is an ongoing, season-long arc (the “mythology” episodes on The X-Files), but there are also character-driven one-shots that deal with a monster-of-the-week that usually helps reveal things about the characters you wouldn’t get to explore if you were going for non-stop plot.”
I was a BIG X-Phile back in the day and, I believe (correct me if I’m wrong), it was the first show to adopt this type of structure. It revolutionised long form TV storytelling structure - a structure which I think Arrow tries to emulate in a way, with their ‘Big Bads’.
They were somewhat successful in S1 and S2 - the two seasons in which the storytelling felt tight, organic and relatively well-plotted.
Season 1
It slowly became clear that there was an underlying conspiracy linking certain people and events to a mysterious ‘Undertaking’. Solving the mystery of this undertaking then became a parallel goal running alongside the ‘monster of the week (MOTW)’ takedowns and it all came to a head towards the end of the season.
This was the closest Arrow has ever come to the X-Files mytharc, and it actually has quite a few parallels; the conspiracy tangentially involved Oliver via his own tragedy (being on the island and losing his father vs Mulder’s sister being abducted) and his parent’s collusion (also similar to Mulder). But the undertaking (like the Alien mytharc) wasn’t happening as a direct consequence of the main protagonist - it was a decades-long plot that he stumbled upon, and decided to stop. This, I think, was crucial to its success. It’s why you can realistically go several episodes focusing on MOTW without directly dealing with the conspiracy; the architects of the conspiracy aren’t spending all their time plotting against the hero, they’re too caught up in their own machinations.
Season 2
There was a similar underlying conspiracy linking certain events and people, but this time it was orchestrated by Slade as a revenge-plot DIRECTLY against Oliver. Even though this goes against what I said above, it was still somewhat successful, because the reveal happened quite late in the show, and we were fully invested in this plot because the show had taken the time to introduce the character and build his relationship with Oliver. Also (and this is just from memory, so may be wrong), it felt like once the Slade reveal happened, the rest of the season was pretty much dedicated to stopping him.
In season 4 and 5, the writers tried to recreate these two formulas, but without the same success. (I’m going to ignore Season 3 because that was just a giant mess in terms of the season long mytharc/big bad).
Season 4: They tried the season 1 formula; you had a Machiavellian BigBad intent on his years-long plot of villainy, which Oliver tried to stop. Oliver was not the direct target, but was tangentially involved because of his links to LOA.
But, the reason season 4 failed was because they introduced Damien Darhk as the (super powerful) BigBad FAR TOO EARLY. The writers then had to twist themselves into narrative knots to explain A) how Oliver and the team could waste time on MOTW storylines that had nothing to do with DD and his plot for world domination and B) why DD didn’t just kill Oliver in episode 4x01. Remember DD’s magnanimous ‘time out’? And how the team destroyed the totem halfway through the season, then had to rebuild it for plot purposes?
EPIC FAIL!
Season 5: This is recapitulating season 2′s formula; a BigBad from Oliver’s past who is intent on revenge. But, again, they introduced him and his motivations far too early and (unlike Slade) they haven’t given us a reason to care - we don’t know Prometheus or the father that (supposedly) sparked off this crusade. Now, the writers may bait and switch later in the season (there seems to be a reason he hasn’t been unmasked) but at present, his back story is supremely uninteresting. Another reason this season is failing in terms of plot and pacing, is that the writers aren’t even TRYING to come up with a reason why the team can ignore Prometheus (and he can ignore the team) from week-to-week while they deal with MOTWs. He’s conveniently leaving them alone while Oliver hunts for birds and fights aliens.
I know there are still 9 episodes left, but this season long arc already feels like an EPIC FAIL!
The writers are PROFESSIONALS! They are being paid to create this! And yet, I’ve read better plotted fanfic. It’s so frustrating!!
Point 2:
Based on this quote: “Arrow doesn’t have one-off episodes to focus on character building. It doesn’t have wacky meta episodes like Supernatural, it doesn’t have concept episodes like The X-Files and it doesn’t have madcap absurdist comedy episodes like Buffy. All of this, I think, is to Arrow’s detriment.”
THIS!!
This is an incredibly wasted opportunity on a COMIC BOOK SHOW! The X-files managed to do it, and that was a MUCH more grounded, serious show. Arrow is about frickin’ superheroes! Characters run around in masks and leather and fight crime with magic rags and super-powered screams! There were even aliens this year. ALIENS!!
So why is the storytelling so god-damn conventional? I know the show started as gritty and dark and ‘realistic’ but we’re a long way from that now (no matter how ‘back-to-basics’ they pretend to be - need I mention ‘Aliens’ again?)
Why can’t they embrace their ridiculousness a bit more and have fun with their structure?
Give me a bottle-episode, where OTA are trapped in an abandoned, bomb-ridden building for the entire 43 minutes and must use their combined talents to escape.
Give me an amnesia episode where they all wake up in the lair with no memory of each other, and have to work out their connections and purpose
Give me a ‘Bad Blood’ episode, where Oliver and Felicity tell conflicting stories to Digg about a botched mission.
Give me an episode entirely from the point of view of a BigBad’s henchman as he tries to do his job while that annoying Green Arrow guy keeps getting in the way
Or from the point of view of Green Arrow’s biggest fangirl or unofficial biographer while he tries to rescue them
Give me a proper ‘Small Potatoes’-style Human Target farce
Give me a ‘Cops’-style episode where all the episode footage is shot by Star City residents on their cellphones
Hell, embrace Flashpoint for real and give me Earth2 Digg and Felicity interacting with the team
The X-files was a serious show, with death and cancer and abductions, but they still had episodes which were pure comedic relief. And it worked!
Why can’t it work in a universe that has time travel and magic? Does a comic book show need to be so conventional?
So those were my thoughts - criticisms really. And it’s not just because I’m in a negative space with the show in general. These are thoughts I’ve had since well before season 5, and it comes from a place of frustration more than bitterness. Because I’ve always felt Arrow had the potential to be SO MUCH MORE than what it has turned out to be.
And that’s a shame.
P.s. Feel free to add on your wacky episode wishlist - I’d love to hear them!

What things make you smile and all warm-fuzzy inside? CATS no seriously, i can have the worst day, but when i walk home and get to pet a cat on the way, i instantly better. i remember coming home after my last final exam all upset and a cat meowing at me and purring and wanting to cuddle with me and i couldn’t help but smile!
What things make you feel a bit sad (don’t push yourself to answer this one)? my current family situation, there’s a bit of drama and fights going on.
What things inspire you to grow? anything and everything, to be honest. there’s new things you experience and learn every single day. things you conquer and master just fine and mistakes you make and all of them shape you into knowing what to do next time a bit more.
The last song(s) that you couldn’t stop listening to? i can’t really think of anything right now, uhhhh, i’ve been listening to the trust me durarara!! ending lately again haha
5. Are you an introvert/extrovert/ambivert? What kind (are you a shy extrovert, super confident introvert, or perhaps a really confused ambivert :0)?: i’m an introvert through and through. i wouldn’t say i’m exceptionally shy nor super confident. i’m somewhere in between. it really depends, around my friends i’m outgoing and cheering and with certain strangers, especially if i know i have to talk with them for literally no longer than 3 minutes right now (i.e. a cashier or someone you walk past) then i’m polite and rather talkative. i just feel exhausted even after spending a lot of time with friends, though the time was enjoyable, but i need my alone time for sure.
What calms you down? the triangle breath! it’s my favorite method to use whenever i feel anxious, upset, angry, or just need to stop and pause for a few minutes. you picture a triangle in your mind (you can even trace it with your finger, or if you can draw it on a piece of paper). you take a breath in through your nose, tracing one side of the triangle. then you breathe out through your mouth, tracing the second and third side of it. other than that, listening to music, taking a nap, petting a cat, watching videos of cats or other cute stuff, sometimes playing a video game.
A character that you really relate to (perhaps you have similar personalities, or maybe you came from similar backgrounds)?: this is gonna sound trashy, but saeyoung choi from mystic messenger and there’s a story behind it too. my friends were playing it way before me and told me “there’s this character that looks just like you, you know nerd glasses, messy red hair, always wearing a baggy black hoodie. he even acts like you, making puns and using memes ALL THE TIME!” and it’s true lmao. also, kaneki ken to some extent? like i really resonate with his personality, the choices he makes, his thoughts speak to me, he’s pretty harsh on himself and goes through ways that are self destructive if he can help others with it.
One thing you love learning? language, it’s just fascinating to me.
Angst or fluff? ANGST, I AM THE ANGST QUEEN, COME ON
If you punch yourself, does that mean you’re strong or does that mean you’re weak? neither and a little bit of both at the same time. let’s go deep in on this one and take the “punch” as emotional self loathing. bashing yourself down definitely doesn’t mean you’re strong, it doesn’t make you tough at all, it only means you’re harsh on yourself. it doesn’t make you weak either. you’re making yourself believe you are weak, but the fact that you endure that and still have the power to do so, means you’re tougher than you’re think.
MY QUESTIONS:
Now that spring’s here, what’s your favorite thing about this season and what do you not like about it?
What’s your spirit animal? Literally. Which animal do you think resembles your inner self and why? (maybe your Patronus, if you know it?
What’s your go-to order at a café?
Do you consider yourself to be creative?
If you could go back in time and change something, would you? If so, what? If not, why?
Where do you see yourself in 20 years from now?
Home sweet home, what makes you feel comfortable in your own home? What’s the overall aesthetic of your room, any colors, textures, an atmosphere, do you maybe keep many stuffed animals or posters or plants?
What do you think is most important when it comes to friendship?
What’s something you improved in since last year?
Werewolves or Vampires, which are cooler?

10 Stigmas People with Diabetes Face
Life is a funny game. Some people are dealt the cards with all the aces, while others are left wondering how the joker got in their hand. The unequal balance of triumphs and hardships in each individual's life may lead to awkward questions or stigmas that are hard to shake off and harder to answer. Sometimes living with diabetes can feel like that and bring a gnarly set of stigmas that aren't the easiest to deal with. It's not easier, but allow us to offer a little sweetness when you realize that you're not alone.
It's NOT a Preference
Vegan, vegetarian, diabetic – one of these things is not like the other. The idea of diabetes being an autoimmune disease that one is born with rather than being a lifestyle choice or personal preference is still relatively new to many people, but slowly picking up steam. So that sweetener sugar-substitute is not by preference of taste, more so because it's literally the sweet substitute to sugar.
Obnoxious Family Members
However, those who are aware of the diabetes crusade often times become the self-proclaimed patron saints of dietary restrictions, announcing loudly to the waiter that not a grain of sugar should infiltrate the food, and if theres even the suspicion of it then it's a 1 star Yelp review and a call to corporate. It's good to have people looking out for one another's needs, but sometimes it can get a little embarrassing...
Polite Conversation
Living with diabetes isn't a curse. It's not an end to the enjoyment of life, and certainly the mention of foods with sugar shouldn't be like a record scratch in the middle of a conversation. Sometimes people think that talking about that cupcake that they had last night or the new candy bar in stores should be tiptoed around like the mentioning of a recently deceased relative. But it's fine. Just because sugary sweets are off limits for some doesn't mean it's a name that shall not be spoken. As long as the enjoyment of the treat isn't gloated about, the conversation should proceed as normal.
The Mysteries of the Finger Prick
It happens, and it happens often. Currently, one common way to test the blood sugar level is to prick the finger and test the blood with a monitor as a way to ensure how the body is doing at that given period of time. But it's not so often that people are seen making themselves purposefully bleed, and it can garner the awkward gawk or two... It's not magic, no one gets a prize and isn't something that's particularly enjoyable. The less stares, the better.
“Is Your Blood Sweet?”
Perhaps it's a fascination with the scientific transformative workings of the body, or maybe just an influx of curious vampires with a sweet tooth, but the blood of diabetes is (generally... hopefully!) not tasted and can't be determined on how closely it tastes to a cherry soda
Exercise Isn't the 'Cure-All'
There are small people with diabetes, there are larger people with diabetes. Especially in the case of Type 1 diabetics when the disease is already predisposed at birth, the person's body weight may not be a factor. Long distance runners have it, casual hockey players have it, couch potatoes have it and everyone else in between.
Confusion with Other Medical Conditions
Is it the one that makes people's eyes swell? Or the one where you smell toast randomly? Or the one where magical powers are acquired by the 13th birthday? No, nope, and that's made up. There are a lot of conditions out there, and granted it can get overwhelming to keep track on what diabetes is, luckily we'll be happy to explain [insert website here]
Going to the Doctor
Going to the doctor, whether you have a condition to be monitored or not, is not always the most fun event in the world. The questions, the tests, the side eye that you swear was judgement but aren't exactly sure and don't want to say anything because you just want to get out of there as soon as possible. It's an ordeal. But luckily, empathy is a relatable trait that many doctors express well, even if they do some times give that side eye.
Always Having to be the One Who Sends Their Food Back (or Even Worse, Not Getting a Treat at All)
That dessert on the menu that you asked the waiter nearly 500 times if it was sugar-free has been brought to the table, and with only a sniff of the baked goodness, it clearly is riddled with sugar. Not fun. It's not fun to send the food back or to ask the food preparer 1000 questions only to get responses that seem half true and completely risky. It's not fun to have to ensure the dietary security of the ingredients in advocation for the safety of your life just for the morsel of an over priced treat that may in fact not even be all that tasty. It's not fun to be handed a carrot while others to munch on savory goodies. It's not fun to get the looks and the stares and hear the whispers due to getting an alternative treat. It's not fun, but it's life.
Explaining What Diabetes is to Every New Person You Meet
We're tired of this stigma, too. That's why we're doing something about it [insert website here]
