how ghost makes a move in his own way

note: so guess who fell down the cod rabbit hole

finding little things to meddle you about (he tells himself it's just his attention to details)

you're prepping for a mission. ghost does his usual quiet scan, then- "holster's loose." he says, low. flat. you brush it off, say it's fine. he doesn't argue, just steps in and adjusts it himself-tight, precise. then again, same tone, not raising his voice: "i said it's loose." there's no softness, no warmth, no explanation. he doesn't explain and he didn't need to, you knew.

tries to impress you- or should i say he doesn't need to try, you are impressed.

you're on comms, keeping an eye out for any movement, feeding ghost intel as he maneuvers through the building. "two tangos outside the storage room." you informed him. "i see them." he responded- a bit too quick. then you offer to ping him a route, expecting him to take the extra help but instead, his voice crackles through the comms, low and dry. "nah. just...watch." a breath and you could already hear bodies on the ground, clean, effortless. "wow." "still watching?" you could hear the smirk in his voice.

he won't coddle up to you or give you pep talks when you're nervous, he'd say little but the right things to get your head out the gutter. he doesn't do shit for you bcs he knows you're capable, just gives you a lil push when you need it.

you're deep in a warehouse, alone this time. tension's high, dark as hell. your breaths coming faster and he could hear it. ghost's voice cuts through your earpiece- "bit quiet back there, love. you dead yet?" you don't answer right away, scanning corners, hands clutched on your weapon. he waits a beat, no panic, he knows you won't die easy. "still breathing," you mutter. "good. try not to embarrass yourself. soap's taking bets." you roll your eyes, but your nerves died down. he didn't ask if you were okay. didn't have to, he knows you're tough. you just needed the noise.

your strength is what he admires most about you. he won't insult you by acting like your knight in shining armor, but when you're in trouble he offers a quiet backup. he knows you can handle yourself though, it's only when situations like these he'd step in.

you're cornered, outnumbered, but still holding your ground. a shot rings out from behind- ghost, clean and quick. "i had it." you exhaled, annoyed. "didn't say you didn't." ghost, casually reloading. you glanced over, he stood calm and poised. "you're welcome." he shrugs.

So I've said multipe times now (here and here) that thinking nmj is just so blinded by privilege he doesn't undertand that acting out of line gets people killed is, in my opinion, a misunderstanding of his character that ignores the part where he's, you know, actively dying the whole time and thinks that's a good thing. But that doesn't mean I don't think privilege plays no role at all in how he views the world.

Specifically, his view that death (at least premature or violent death) means something.

Death isn't always a tragedy to NMJ, but it is always meaningful. If you kill an evil dangerous person for your righteous cause, that death had meaning. There was evil in the world and now there is less of it. Similarly, if you die in the pursuit of your righteous cause, that death has meaning, because the sheer dedication you gave to it that you were willing to die for it will further that cause, and your bretheren will be invigorated by your sacrifice to fight even harder.

If a death isn't meaningful, that's an injustice and it is up to the living to give it meaning. That's what cuts so deep about his father's murder. There were no consequences, no changes, no meaning. Wen Ruohan was just going to get away with it! He fights and wins an entire war to make it mean something, to make it so that the unjust murder of Nie Mingjue's father is part of Wen Ruohan's downfall.

But this is a view he can only hold because he's the kind of person who's death will be meaningful. Most ordinary people's deaths are meaningless. Not ontologically, not inherently, but they are made meaningless because no one cares. For death to be meaningful you either have to be so powerful that anything you risk your life for will be impacted in some way. (Like, say, if you sacrifice a long life for immense martial power in a faustian bargain with a blade) Or if people with that kind of power care enough about you to do so for you. For most people, this isn't true. A starving street kid has no power to change the unfair world that put them there, even if they risk their life trying, and no one will do it for them once they die.

Nie Mingjue knows this in abstract, and of course rightfully believes it's wrong. But all that does is make it yet another righteous cause people should be willing to die for. Everyone's deaths should mean something, we'll make it so or die trying!

This is what the conflict between nieyao is about at its core. Because Jin Guangyao, fundamentally, cannot conceive of his own death as meaningful. Nie Mingjue grew up around powerful men who could change the world but refuse to do so because god forbid they risk a single hair on their perfect heads. Meng Yao, on the other hand, grew up in an environment where no one of importance would blink twice if you died. He was surrounded by meaningless death. Indeed his entire early life is defined by that lack of care.

Meng Shi dies and no one cares. Meng Yao gets thrown off a flight off stairs and no one cares. He has to be the one to do the caring, and once he's gone no one else will do it for him.

So he has to live.

Jin Guangyao eventually gets far enough that he actually does aquire the power to change some things... as long as he's alive. If he changes too much, holds on too tightly to his ideals, he'll die and it'll all be for nothing. He can't sacrifice himself for his goals because doing so would immediately render those goals unobtainable. No one will care about what he tried to do. He won't be a heroic sacrifice, he'll just be trash that finally cleaned itself up.

And well... Nie Mingjue dies, and someone makes it mean something. Makes it mean so much that the entire story of mdzs would not exist without it. Jin Guangyao dies and it doesn't mean anything. Most people are glad to be rid of him, and the few that are not don't do anything to change that.

saikis powers are a vital part of him so it makes sense that people who dont know about them cant truly understand his whole self, but its also very silly to me when people act like its the ONLY important part of him... people act like his friends that arent in the know are completely blind to who saiki is, but i feel like that kinda means you missed some major points... he cant keep his powers a secret forever and it DOES matter, but he can still be loved and KNOWN without knowing about them... hes still human, he still has a personality, he still has regular likes and dislikes, etcetc

his friends perspectives on him may have been wrong at first, but they CHANGED... they know him and love him, and theyll KEEP loving him the SAME once they know of his powers...

​some people cough cough cough in this fandom like to reduce saiki to JUST his powers and its so obvious that you just. missed everything. you didnt absorb anything from the show, you just saw it and went "ha, everyone thinks hes just a guy when hes actually super cool and powerful" no no no, he IS cool and powerful but look a little closer and at his core he is still LITERALLY JUST A GUY 😭😭😭

dbl amnesia au in which when shadowvanilla settle down for the cottage lifestyle, everyone is, understandably, out looking for them. Two powerful beings gone? In an instant? At the same time? Soemthing *mustve* happened. And I think of all the people to find them first, Black Sapphire would stumble upon this, realize quite quickly that neither of them remember anything, and actually, kind of just… keep quiet about the whole thing. Hell, he might even settle nearby to keep an eye on them and see if smilk remembers anything by seeing or interacting with him, but all he sees is a man who is very happy with his new situation with no hints that he might even recall who he might’ve been beforehand.

if anyone else comes along, depending on who it is that arrives, black sapphire may even run interference to make sure others don’t mess with them and try to purposefully jog their memories since whatever they’ve got going on seems to be working for them, even IF he really wants his master back. And I’m sure smilk isn’t entirely unlike his old self… he’s just different now. Calmer. Happier for sure with pure vanilla being the optimistic cookie he is.

Speaking of, shadowvanilla probably make for fairly nice neighbors, and they play off each other like an old couple with their fond bickering. Probably like the grandparents people wish they had: a doting pure vanilla who’s more than happy to share extra produce and bring over food, a silly smilk who’ll happily spin yarn and tell stories about whatever he’s made up and who’ll take your side in arguments, and the both of them will sit out on their porch for tea for break or in the evening and be sociable to anyone who passes.

They deserve their peace and their homey habit even if it only lasts for a little bit, and it’ll be something they surely won’t be able to forget should their original memories ever do return
