yuzu’s swap au

This has been lurking in my brain every since and I think I want to talk about it!!! I ALSO HAVE AN URGE TO DRAW SO BAD GHHRHGH but maybe the picrews and neka will help hehe

What is the Swap AU?

Basically an AU where everything is the same but Tenma and Kai have swapped roles (and personalities) aka one of the many Actress Kai AUs

But also there are things I didn’t swap swap because I thought it would be funny to keep them (but these are like anchor points to my swap au aka what i don't really change and they are just SOME of them):

Tenma still ends up joining Mankai as the Summer Troupe leader and he still will have that stage fright moment

Kai’s desire to change herself and make her bravado into True Confidence

Kai and Itaru know each other and still have that good ol’ sibling dynamic

nonotenkai are still a thing theyre still childhood friends and the roles of kai and tenma in the miscommunication equation are the same, Tenma still likes Kai even after the childhood phase.

BUUUUUT with those similarities in mind, here are the list of changes (respective to similarities listed above):

Tenma has all the personality flaws and insecurities Kai would typically hold (impending need to be ‘useful’, kai’s overworking tendencies and her overall anxiety and overthinking), he is SUPER interested in theater but after that stage fright moment, he swore off it and never gave it another chance (until Mankai)

in this au, Kai would be bolder than the typical kai who would usually double think lots of things (she does have confidence but not as much as she’d like)

Itaru being the one usually sneaking Kai out esp when she needs a breather from showbiz (default: Kai would frequent to Mankai to check up on Itaru settling in esp when Itaru’s social battery is drained in ACT 1)

In my point of tenkai childhood friends, Kai still overhears that Tenma likes Nono (the misunderstanding) and that Tenma likes Kai (a point that still stands even into the current A3 timeline) BUT BUT BUT kai this time, has feelings for tenma!! she is actively seeking out his attention and affection but Tenma chooses not to read too much into it

OKAY SO SWAP AU BRAINROT TIME!!!

Kai actively flirting with Tenma but she would always play it as a joke after but there would be moments where Tenma would be downright honest and would catch Kai flustered

“Practice a kiss scene with me.” Line? UNCHANGING EVEN IN SWAP AU AND ITS STILL TENMA’S LINE, kai could NEVER nevernevernevernever do it to Tenma but it is only because of Tenma’s insistence that they do it (…because he wants to help and he believes that this will help the quality of performance and kai is just dying inside from embarrassment)

I think it would be completely sweet for Kai to gift Tenma flowers after their plays and gets clamored by Natsugumi because Itsuki Kaiya is a famous teen actress ♡

Tenma who wants to be super good at acting so he asks (begs) Kai to help him and Kai is so willing to help him through. Although Kai's specialties aren't in comedy, it would be good to get some feedback from someone who is a professional :>

Everyone who keeps asking Tenma; “hey, you and Kai are dating, right?” Tenma with a straight face: No.

Kasumi who is STILL their number 1 hater and supporter, pushing their heads together just to kiss and get on with their lives but this time Kasumi is egging Kai to confess because she can't stand Kai just trying to form a cohesive thought when she wants to be honest with Tenma.

Tenma and Kai running through scripts together 💕💕💕 Something about the sheer professionalism of a thoroughly trained actor and how Kai looks so good when she’s focused and serious makes Tenma shift slightly in his seat as Kai’s trying to explain why this might be a better way to phrase that improv he thought of on the spot and building the characters together 🥺 and how they’re both trying to get the vibe right

Tenma, who is still good at fake crying. Ever since Kai discovered that, she is literally just asking him everyday: "...Are you sure you don't want to enter show business?"

Tons of tension. Weird, almost bordering sexual tension. It makes people want to leave these two alone and see what happens in the next ten minutes. Yuki cannot STAND being the 3rd wheel 8/10 times that he gets caught between these two (almost literally if circumstance pushes it).

TENMA BEING A FUCKING NERDDDD SHIT OHHHRJFHFJDJ tenma that just spends his free time rolling on gacha, playing rpgs, and cosplaying!!! OH FUCK THATS SO CUTE HRRGHHRGHHR

“No, because you see these two WORK—it’s like instinct, the chemistry is THERE, and I don’t—I just feel like I’m being baited over here, you know?” / “…And this affects that theory you were talking about how?” / “It affects the fan theory because we suspect—(goes on about the theory)“

By the end of that conversation, kai is doing research about it in her own time and raises her own point to tenma (it gets ugly bc they’re both stubborn and kai believes in the theory that contradicts what tenma talks about)

Like Tenma’s One Interest (which is Bonsai) Swap Kai has a singular interest that keeps her grounded and its crochet/knitting :D

Kai is literally that One Juniper Woods sprite where she fucking knits out hearts when she has Tenma in the brain (she also gets inspired enough to…knit him a scarf)

Tenma who is never moving on from Kai’s hand knitted scarf gift on Christmas, he uses it and he takes such good care of it (and rarely lends it to ANYONE)

Kai who is surprisingly pure and says things that could be taken in multiple ways (in contrast to OG Kai who is quite buried in filth). Tenma knows she doesn't mean it when she asks him to stay the night. Tenma, whose brain cannot TAKE IT ANYMORE, when Kai tells him with a flustered expression that she wants to do it (hold hands) but luckily since this isn't his first rodeo with Kai's words asks her to clarify what exactly it is and Tenma is more than happy to hold hands with her.

Aki who is more than happy to be Kai's wingman, he sets up opportunities for both of them. Bringing Tenma to a certain location that a hotspot for couples to date? Easy. Telling Kai that they will eat outside later, so they should meet here, in this spot, around this time. They got set up :)

Despite the swap, I still think Kai would be the more protective out of the both of them, she has disguises whenever she goes out with Tenma LMAO like wigs and contacts at the ready to keep her hidden. she’s very careful about going out and it doesn’t help that tenma has a very eyecatching presence lol

In this swap au hehehe (to end it all off) tenma is the one who confesses :D in the default, kai is the one who ends up confessing but i think it would be a neat take to see tenma say it first LMAO

I indulged in this AU because I just needed a reason to see a flirtier Kai, that’s all.

This can only end in two ways; you either get your self a boyfriend or you embarrassed yourself in front of your friend's other friends during her wedding. Aside from your pride, what more could you lose? Well, for starter, you could lose your friend, but Hina knows how much stupid you can be sometimes so that's not really a threat. Second, if this fails, you'll be remembered as the 'lady who tried to hit on someone but failed miserably'. And third, you might annoy the guy you're trying to get your hands on and he will remember you as the weird creepy lady. Not a tasteful outcomes, but you'll take the risk. Because the man you're trying to get is not just any man, it's the Mitsuya Takashi. What more can you ask for, right?

Spotting Hina talking with her husband and his friends, you decided it's time to set your plan in motion. Thank god your dress was long or else you'll have to think of a much better plan to get that man's attention - not like your plan now was any better tho.

You took a sip from your champagne and waited till Hina's eyes catch yours. And that's not a hard thing to do, considering Hina was busy attending to guests that her eyes keeps flickering here and there. But you felt bad using your friend and her wedding just so you could snatch a conversation with a guy.

With a sighed, you decided to give Hina another gift. Not a wedding gift, but an apology one.

When Hina's attention turned towards your direction, you smiled at her and raised your glass. In turn, she motioned for you to come forward. Putting the glass down, you composed yourself and reminded yourself of your plan.

Hiding a smirk, you walked with confidence. Kicking your dress underneath while walking and trying to time the perfect fall, you were unaware of a running Sano barreling towards you. Luckily, you have enough reflex to avoid him and spiral down the floor, but your sudden turn made you trip backwards. And your dress created a tangled mess, even Mikey was not spared.

This wasn't the fall you were planning, so while in the motion of falling backwards, you pray that Hina catches you or one of the couple's friend, you removed the thought of having Mitsuya catch you, considering the distance, Hina would be the nearest one. the bad news is, if no one get's to you in time, you might have a concussion or worse - die, if you did, you swore you will haunt down Sano and get a revenge on what he did. Which might be a bad omen to the newly wed couple.

Closing your eyes, you braced yourself from the impact. Only to feel a solid chest behind you and stop your fall. A hand was placed to your waist and shoulder to steady you. And you felt a warm breath tickled your neck when the person who catch you spoke. "Oi Mikey! I said carefully, and don't run around recklessly."

Mikey, the man who tripped - a karma you think, because he decided to disrupt your perfectly crafted plan (not really) - but was still able to balance himself not make an spectacle, smirk and said, "Heh Mitsuya, you worked fast." And with that he left.

The man behind you snickered.

Meanwhile, you were left there confused and went rigid when you felt his chest vibrate and felt a warm puff of air behind your ear. You tensed up and all the conversations you played inside your head once your plan work, was thrown out the door. Now your just standing there awkwardly with Mitsuya's hands on your body. That thought was dangerous too. Goodness.

"Should we let you sit down first? I think you were surprised by what happened." You could only nod your head. Cause what were you supposed to say? 'Yes I'm surprised but I actually like what happened. By the way, do you like kids? And do you think you can still design my wedding dress even if we're busy preparing our wedding, oh and also, what motif do you like? -'

Mitsuya withdrawn his hands from your waist and shoulder once he's certain you're able to regain your balance. You were shocked by your own self control when no whimpers came out of your lips when he decided to distance himself from you.

You gasped when he bent down and started fixing the tangled ends of your dress. When he stood up, he smiled and asked, "May I hold your hand?" You turned to him surprised.

Was he seriously asking you? Oh goodness, the bare minimum yet it's so hot. "Y-yes." With a smile you held out your hand. He took yours and led you to a table. You looked back to Hina to apologize only to see her smiling brightly and her husband and friends were smirking and snickering amongst themselves.

You turned back to Mitsuya and witness him pull a chair for you to sit. Once sat down, he went beside you and sat too. You avoided his gaze by flickering your eyes everywhere. Your eyes went to Yuzuha, who was across the room, she was smiling and made a thumbs up. Thinking she was applauding you for having Mitsuya's attention now and not ranting to her how much you like him, you were also about to smile and make some hand signal when the man beside you laughed softly, affectionately you would say, but you're not yet delirious.

In your periphery, you saw Mitsuya smile and made a thumbs up signal to Yuzuha. Raising a brow, you were about to ask him what that was about when Hakkai, made his appearance. "Taka-chan, Yuzuha said you were so smooth in catching Y/n, she thought Mikey would mess up and almost get Y/n in an acci - oh..."

The atmosphere around the two of you became heavy and you saw Hakkai slowly back away. Mitsuya then turned to you and smiled sheepishly. "Yeah, you weren't actually supposed to trip." You burst out laughing after what he said.

"Were you planning on making me fall and then catch me?"

"No. Hina was just supposed to call you over and introduce me to you. But Yuzuha decided to play matchmaker and involve Mikey."

"That's sweet of them. But I'm gonna get them back for that."

"Well, Yuzuha hates the Haitani brothers and Draken has Mikey's stash of Dorayaki."

The both of you laughed and you started planning a way to get back on the two of them while Mitsuya just smiled and gives comments here and there.

It was, on the day of Hina and Takemichi's wedding, a silent war was made. The prank war only lasted for three months because Mitsuya decided to conspire with the two and plan the greatest prank war by involving the gang, in asking you to be his girlfriend. Needless to say, the whole thing became chaotic that involved a wasted Haruchiyo, Peh and Pah thrashing the venue - it was the Shiba's house so at least you got something out of it -, everyone agreeing to have Draken as the best man, Chifuyu crying and wanting Peke J beside him, Takemichi crying and wanting Hina to marry him, everyone just watching shit goes down, and Hanma having all of it in his camera.

"Shimabara" is her father's surname, but her full name very much follows brazilian name conventions with her First name + maternal surname + paternal surname... When she started living in Japan, people always had a hard time pronouncing her full name, so she started referring herself as just "Elena Shimabara", thus adopting it as her artistic name.

❥ Yuzuru isn't the most accustomed to PDA. However, he's not exactly against it...?

❥ He's pretty used to being around people that enjoy public displays of affection, but he hasn't exactly been on the receiving end of such affections. It might take some time to get used to.

❥ Either way, he finds your affectionate nature to be quite endearing. As someone who is expected to maintain an uptight image (both as an idol and a butler), your presence is something that he certainly enjoys.

❥ Sometimes, Yuzuru finds himself growing flustered whenever you shower him with compliments. It's almost amusing to see Yuzuru, always diligent and composed, stumbling over his words around his S/O (or it is to Tori, at least).

❥ Whether it's hand-holding or cuddling, Yuzuru appreciates your affections (despite a certain drama kid's teasing...). He may as well be on cloud 9 at this point...

"Hattan, your hands are so cold...!" you commented, stopping in your tracks to face Yuzuru.

He looked at you with an almost puzzled expression. "Oh my, are they really?"

Nodding, you continued. "Yeah, let me warm them up for you!" You took his cold hands into yours, squeezing them in an attempt to warm them up. "There!"

biology wise I have Seph always as intersex in some regard and genderwise it depends on how much thought he's spared himself--overall I think he's nonbinary in the most overarching definition and if given the chance to exist outside shinra he would gravitate towards femininity and eventually land on only feminine pronouns for herself! as it stands canonically i think she transcends gender in the corrupted ascenion to godhood seph has, but overall has left the aspect of his gender unassessed

A NOTP I have with said character:

angealseph/sephgeal-- i personally find angeal unbearable. he really annoys the fuck out of me im sorry angeal fans but he's not my man... I think that his hardheadedness/stubbornness in his idea of honour would grate on sephiroth, but the reason sephiroth likes him is because of his care otherwise. It's just not something I can see sephiroth pursuing romantically though Lol so in that vein I also don't really like AGS or any angeal ot3 😔

A random headcanon:

niche weirdest hc i have is the eyeball nipple ALSO applies to seph, he has that eyeball nipple guys.

Less insane hc is that he is a sugar fiend, desserts are his favourite food and his drinks could all be classified as syrup. also despite not being the biggest fan of citrus he really really likes yuzu! I tend to flit between him being vegetarian and not as well, mostly because he would be tripping over himself to try new things because he's excited over the prospects of new sensory stimulas that isnt, say, Pain in a new flavour

General Opinion over said character:

WAAAAUUUGH! i love this blorbo. I wish he had a chance to live and not die everything he was always going to be. It was really self fufilling and in the end he died as what Hojo wanted of him--never breaking free, dying under the abuse, becoming the abuse that made him. Fucking kills me! I want a world where he breaks the cycle, where he becomes the future. That's a reason I love the transformative aspect of fandom here, I couldn't love ff7 the way I do without all the AU's, there is just far too much here to mess with, to reshape.

Totally tangentially, but I don't agree with people speaking of him being irredeemable or deserving of punishment, these are fundamentally reductive ideas and don't even line with the politics of ff7 itself LOL Atonement and redemption does not mean everyone suddenly forgives and forgets, but it does mean everyone is afforded another chance. Everyone is deserving of that. Even people who've committed heinous acts, because foundationally they're still people. It all depends on whether or not they double down on their damage and believe in it till the end, if they're apathetic and even jubilant at their violence. If he came back uncaring, apathetic, and fundamentally unchanged from the blind bitter hate filled attitude he had before, then yes he is unredeemable because he is refusing it. But were he to acknowledge the wrongs and try to right them, try to move on and apologize then yes he could work for atonement. Sorry for the random anti-punishment rant LOL I've just been thinking abt this for a while, check out philosophytubes video on capital punishment (its on youtube!) for further challenges on this idea :D
