You didn’t think the rest of the week would be peaceful in any way but even you couldn’t guess just how tense it would be.
“This is insane,” Becca pointed out, crossing her arms and leaning back on her seat. You had decided to meet up for brunch but this time, two other tables in the café were also reserved for your and Becca’s multiple bodyguards who were enjoying their coffees. You stole a look at them, then turned to Becca.
“You’re telling me,” you said. “Four bodyguards everywhere I go. It sounds absurd.”
“And this is Barnes territory!” Becca hissed. “I’ve never ever needed bodyguards in our territory, and all of a sudden...”
“How stressed out is everyone?” you asked and she shook her head with a sigh.
“I could barely see Bucky in these last couple of days,” she said. “My dad said I have nothing to worry about, but you know how he is. It’s kind of condescending, honestly.”
“And your mom?”
“She has this bright idea to send me off to vacation to Zürich until the dust settles here.”
You pulled your brows together. “Will you?”
“No!” she exclaimed. “I’m not leaving any of you here.”
You reached out to squeeze at her hand before grabbing your coffee to take a sip.
“How about you?”
“I think I will get the same speech tonight,” you said. “My dad wants to talk to me.”
“And?”
“I’ll make a counter offer.”
“To?”
“To help out,” you said. “With this situation. Besides, me leaving in a time like this would be basically handing Ian the heir position, and I’m not doing that.”
“Do you think your father will accept that offer though?”
“We’ll see,” you said, trying to ignore the way your stomach did a flip. “I’d be better than Ian than handling this, he has to see that.”
“Bucky says Ian isn’t even carrying a gun anymore,” Becca said with a small laugh and you tilted your head.
“What?”
“Yeah. Apparently he says no one can get to him with his men around him. I guess it’s his way of making them think he trusts them with his life.”
You rolled your eyes. “Right.”
“As much as I hate to admit, it looks like it’s working,” Becca admitted. “He looks pretty confident.”
“Confidence can lead to very huge mistakes,” you said and cleared your throat. “Ugh, let’s talk about something else. How’s everything with Leila?”
“That’s what I wanted to ask you!” Becca said, snapping her fingers. “Do you think it’s still too early to ask her to marry me?”
You blinked a couple of times. “Becca, you two started dating less than a week ago.”
“Yeah but I could still ask her!”
“That’s the hopeless romantic in you speaking.”
“That’s the orgasms speaking actually,” she corrected you, making you grin.
“Either way, neither of those make you think logical.”
“Logical is overrated,” she pointed out. “How about you?”
“Me?”
“You and Ethan?”
“We’re not doing anything,” you said slowly. “I did hire some bodyguards for him though, just in case.”
“Maybe you should take the first step.”
“I’m not going to do that,” you said, shaking your head fervently and she hummed.
“Don’t tell me Bucky’s proposal affected you like that.”
“What? No!” you exclaimed, scrunching up your face. “Why would you say that?”
Becca rolled her eyes.
“Maybe because I’ve known you two my whole life?”
Your frown deepened. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“Please,” she said, shooting you a look. “All those glances and so much bickering, it’s obvious something is there—”
“Hate,” you cut her off. “Hate is what’s there.”
Becca gave you a mischievous smile, then sipped her coffee.
“Whatever you say.”
“Bucky and I could never work,” you insisted and Becca hummed.
“What about you and Ethan?”
“Ethan is—” you paused for a moment. “Dating him would be incredibly simple. You know, no ulterior motives, no strategies, nothing complex.”
“That would be so convincing if you could deal with simple more than just a couple of months.”
“You can,” you said and Becca waved a hand in the air.
“I was never promised the heir position,” she said. “It was always Bucky. That’s why I’ve never had that…that burning ambition both of you have. At the end of the day, I do want a simple life Y/N but you’ve never been that type. I don’t think you could actually be happy in a simple relationship.”
You clicked your tongue and leaned back in your chair.
“Well then that complicates things,” you said. “I don’t think I would be happy with someone in the business either.”
“Why not?”
“Are you kidding?” you said with a laugh. “Come on, you know how spouses are treated in the business. You’re just—you’re there as the arm candy, they never let you get involved—”
“That’s the generation before us.”
“Did Bucky put you up to this?” you asked and she huffed out a laugh.
“I didn’t say you should marry my brother,” she pointed out. “I’m just saying maybe you shouldn’t force yourself to like a simple life if you want more than that. Especially if you’re basing your decision on some ancient bullshit rule our families decided to follow.”
You heaved a sigh and took a sip of your coffee.
“Didn’t you just say logical is overrated?” you asked. “Since when are you so logical?”
“I have my moments,” Becca grinned at you. “So. Can we talk about my love life now?”
“Yes but you can’t ask her to marry you.”
“I can ask her to be my fiancée,” Becca stated and you tilted your head.
“That’s…that’s basically the same, Becca.”
Becca rolled her eyes and groaned.
“Fine!” she said. “Can I at least ask her if we should move in together?”
You bit back a smile.
“I’ll give you my permission for that once you two reach the third month.”
“Oh we will,” Becca said with a bright smile. “Great. I’ll send you the house warming party gift list when I get home then.”
                                               *
You had assumed your father would see you and gave you the same speech Becca got from her parents at home, but apparently he was swamped with work so he had asked you to come to the company. When you got there, your father’s assistant told you he was in the middle of a meeting with Ian and Stark, so you took a seat in the waiting area and stole a look at Ryan who was no doubt waiting for Ian.
“Hi Ryan.”
“Ma’am,” he greeted you, his tone rough but respectful. You smiled at him, crossing your arms.
“Waiting for my cousin?”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Do you mind if I ask you a question?” you asked and he paused for a moment, then shrugged his shoulders.
“Why are you working for him?” you asked. “He’s an asshole.”
Ryan didn’t even dignify that with an answer as he looked at you, his expression completely calm like he was very used to not giving answers.
“Riveting conversation as always,” you teased him and he bit back a small smile.
“I respect your family, ma’am.”
“I mean you don’t really have to respect Ian though, God knows he does nothing to earn that,” you pointed out. “You know he’s looking forward to starting a war, right?”
“He’s ready to see you,” the assistant said before Ryan could answer you, and you nodded your head, then stood up from the couch.
“Have a nice evening Ryan.”
“You too ma’am,” he said and you followed the assistant to your father’s office.
“Y/N sweetheart, hello,” he said as he walked to you to press a kiss on your cheek. “Sit down, sit down!”
“How was your meeting?” you asked and he waved a hand in the air.
“The usual,” he said. “I have four other meetings after this.”
“Daddy—”
“I will rest when I get home, I promise,” he said and you narrowed your eyes at him.
“Right. I’ll believe it when I see it.”
“It’s just that I don’t know when they will be finished, and I figured you’d be asleep by the time I got home,” he said. “Y/N listen—”
“Don’t bother giving me that speech, I’m not going anywhere,” you cut him off and he frowned.
“How did you…?”
“Winnifred gave the same speech to Becca. She tried to send her to Zürich, where are you trying to send me?”
“Wherever you want,” your father said. “I was thinking Florence but…”
“Florence is a gorgeous city,” you said. “I’d love to see it sometime, maybe next Christmas.”
“Y/N.”
You gave him a small grin. “Hm?”
“It’s going to be safer for you if you just go away from the city for a while.”
“While you and Ian handle things?”
“While I handle things.”
“But Ian stays?” you insisted and he ran a hand over his face.
“Yes, but—”
“I’m not going,” you said, your voice firm. “Send him away if you want, but I’m not leaving the city when there’s a war coming.”
“I feel like you need to think about this,” your father said and you shook your head.
“I did think about it.”
“Y/N, I will feel much better if I know you’re away from danger, at least until the dust settles here.”
You sat up straighter, your heart pacing in your chest.
“Dad I can help,” you said. “With all this. You know I can.”
A look of realization dawned on his face.
“We’ve talked about this.”
“No we haven’t,” you insisted. “Not really. We keep ignoring it, ignoring the fact that you haven’t named a successor—”
“That’s because I’m not planning on retiring soon.”
You let out a dry laugh. “Others might believe that lie, but I do not.”
Your father heaved a sigh, then pushed himself off of his seat to come closer to you, then leaned back to his desk, crossing his arms.
“And please tell me, what is it that you want to hear from me right now?” he asked you and you shook your head.
“Don’t patronize me,” you said through your teeth. “You know what I’m capable of, you trained me for times like these. You know I’d make a much better heir than Ian—”
“Y/N, enough.”
“Just give me a chance to prove myself,” you insisted. “That’s all I’m asking. You don’t have to make me the head of all operations, but give me a chance to show you I can do this. I’ve already prepared a plan—”
“Let me stop you right there,” he said. “What you’re suggesting is absolutely out of question.”
Your jaw clenched. “Why?”
“We already have a plan.”
“Okay,” you let out an impatient breath. “Then you can tell me the plan and I’ll help.”
“No need, we have everything covered.”
You could feel the anger bubbling in your stomach but you dug your fingernails into your palm, reminding yourself to stay calm.
“Dad,” you said slowly. “You promised me.”
“And I promised your mother!” he snapped, making you stop talking. “I promised your mother that I would keep you safe, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.”
The bridge of your nose along with the back of your eyes started burning, a sure sign that the tears were on their way but you blinked fast a couple of times, biting at your tongue.
“That was your mother’s dying wish,” he said, looking you in the eye. “I’m not going to break my promise to her.”
You swallowed thickly. “Mom would want me to be happy.”
“And you think this life would make you happy?” he asked you. “All this bloodshed, this violence?”
“I was born into bloodshed and violence,” you reminded him. “I’ve spent all my life in it. What, you think you can keep me safe by pushing me out of the picture?”
“It’s much safer than being in the middle of it.”
“For now,” you pointed out. “What about the future? I already know three families that will refuse to do business with Ian.”
Your father shrugged his shoulders. “It’s too early to worry about that. I’m not retiring anytime soon.”
“Dad, he wants to start a war.”
“He will see that war isn’t good for business,” he brushed you off. “He’s just very eager to prove himself right now, that’s all. He’s not going to start a war, don’t worry.”
You gritted your teeth and pursed your lips, glaring at him.
“You got your fire from me, your mother was much calmer,” he said with a small smile. “So I swear to you, I understand your frustration and anger very well. The crown you think you want right now? It’s way too dangerous sweetheart. You’ll see it in time that I’m making the right choice.”
The tears blurred your sight for a moment before you blinked them away and wetted your lips, trying to ignore the lump in your throat.
“You’re not going to name me as your successor, are you?” you rasped out. “Nor will you let me prove myself.”
Your father held your gaze in his for a second, then shook his head.
“No.”
The disappointment hit you so hard that it made your head spin. This wasn’t news to you in any way, you had spent years watching your father treat Ian like his successor but actually hearing it from him was enough to make you want to scream. Anger rushed through you, boiling your blood and you bit your tongue hard enough to hurt, and nodded slowly.
“Okay,” you heard yourself say as you stood up, not even looking him in the eye and he took a deep breath.
“Honey…” he started but you walked out of his office without sparing him a glance, your whole body moving as if it was on autopilot. You got to the elevator and pressed the button, then stepped inside and watched the doors close, sniffling as you wiped at your eyes.
Very well then.
If your father didn’t want to give you power, you were going to take it for yourself.
                                               *
The address wasn’t exactly familiar to you seeing that you hadn’t been there before, but your driver knew the way. When you walked into the building and gave the reception your name, it took them less than a minute to guide you to the elevator, everyone around you rushing like they were instructed not to make you wait even for a second. When the elevator stopped at the top floor, a bodyguard led you to the door of the penthouse to knock on the door and you heard the footsteps coming closer before the door opened.
It looked like Bucky had dashed through the apartment to put his jeans on when they told him you were there, seeing that he was breathing quite fast. You let yourself run your gaze over his bare muscular torso, the tattoos over his chest catching your attention before your eyes snapped up to his, your heart skipping a beat.
God damn it, you almost forgot just how handsome he was.
“Charm,” he said, offering you a small smile. “Hi.”
“Hey there,” you said as you walked past him into the penthouse before he could invite you inside and he closed the door behind you.
“This is a nice surprise,” he said while you glanced around. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
You took a deep breath and turned around to look at him better, your heart beating in your ears.
“Get rid of whoever is in your bedroom,” you said and shot him a sarcastic smile as you crossed your arms. “We need to talk about the wedding.”

Could we get a laia aleixandri one
Tumblr media
Hi :) Here is one ask, I hope you'll enjoy it. I talk in it about some things I learned in Swiss football federation and it's not really funny so, be prepared. I try to touch the subject only lightly though.
The story is after the last game between Switzerland and Spain, in October.
Also, how cute is Laia on this picture?
TW : Loosing, fluff, mention of abuse.
______________________________________________________________
You’re disgusted, it would be hard to say otherwise. Your Swiss national team has just been lowered by Spain and none of your teammates managed to keep a neutral face when leaving the field. You are called with Lia to be interviewed, but to the journalist’s question too much. You decide to leave with Lia, taking her by the shoulder with you. "Why didn’t you try to fight Spain?" What a fucking moron.
After drinking a little and breathing, you decide to go out on the field to thank your fans for their presence. Despite your defeat, they never stopped singing and encouraging you for a single second. This allows you to cross paths with Alexia Putellas and to stutter and blush when she congratulates you for your goal, the only one of the Swiss team. You also greet Ona, more warmly than you did before the kick-off. You know her for playing with her at Manchester United before she was transferred to Barcelona and you to Liverpool.
You feel your gaze linger longer on the silhouette of another Catalan woman, whom you know a little better. At your fingertips, in truth. But almost no one on this field is aware, apart from Ona, so you pretend nothing and continue to take photos or sign jerseys.
After an hour, you decide to go back to the locker room, most of your teammates are already there and the rain intensifies. So you smile and wave to the fans before going back through the tunnel. You notice with a sigh of relief that journalists or cameras are no longer there.
Surprise, however, cuts off your breathing when you feel that you are grabbed by two hands on your waist to pull you back, bringing you to the opposite corner of the direction you had taken. A hand rests on your mouth before you are turned to face your attacker, who gives you her best smile.
"Holà mi pequena bonita" whispers Laia before kissing you tenderly.
You smile against her lips and pass your arms around her neck, deepening the kiss. Both of you are separated by your obligations for your national teams, it’s been two weeks since you only spoke to her on the phone. But when you feel her hands slipping under your swimsuit, you can’t hold back the little scream and the chills it gives you.
"Laia, your hands are freezing!"
The blonde laughs softly and slips them even further under your clothes, stopping them only when she reaches the height of your shorts.
"It’s not my fault it’s so cold in your country"
You roll your eyes before you snuggle up against her again, tiptoeing to inhale her scent.
"I miss you"
"I miss you too" Laia replies, glancing over her shoulder when she hears footsteps.
You also hear them and detach yourself from her with regret. Your teammates will soon wonder where you are. Laia smiles at you, caressing your cheek.
"Will you meet me later?" you mumble
Laia barely has time to agree that you hear Alisha’s voice ringing in the corridors, apparently looking for you. Sighing, you slip away, comforted by the idea that you will be able to see her again tonight.
********
Even if you play for Liverpool, you're still living at Manchester. Liverpool is like 45 minutes away with your car and you chose not to move for two reasons. The first being that you love your apartment, the second being Laia. Even if it makes you get up earlier, being able to go back to her is a chance you should enjoy.
You were born and raised in Zürich, Switzerland. This is where you took your first steps in the football's world before being spotted by Manchester United and signing your first official contract with them. It was there, and through Ona, that you met Laia. Your family stayed in Switzerland, so you decided to keep an apartment here so you could come home without depending on someone.
It serves you well today, since around 11pm, Laia finally arrived at the bottom of your house. You give her a quick tour of the owner, since it’s not a mansion either. And you simply settle for the presence of the other, eating snacks found in your cupboards in front of the TV.
"When are you coming back to Manchester?" asks Laia, the latter having since a long time abandoned trying to understand the Swiss-German program that is on television.
"I’ll be there tomorrow night, what about you?"
"In three days. I have to go back to Madrid, then Barcelona and finally taking another flight for Manchester."
"But it’s so long" you complain while frowning, making the Spanish laugh.
"I know. But you have me all the night"
You smile back, getting as close to her as you can. You throw one leg on her stomach, hugging her tightly.
"How are your teammates? You all look very upset. I'm sorry for your loss."
"I know, it's not only today's game. Some things are happening in the Federation right now and you know how this kind of stories can affect a team."
Laia hums while looking at you. You had a lot of conversations before about women's condition in sport in general and you really hope that what happened this summer in Australia will change a lot of things.
"What kind of stories?" Laia asked.
"Abuse" you mumble after hesitating a few seconds to answer..
"What? Like physical abuse?"
"I'm not supposed to talk about that Laia I'm so-"
"Did someone touch you? Because I swear to god..."
The Latin, yet known for her sweet character seems to getting angrier every second and you prefer to interrupt her words before she imagines too many things. So you put a finger on her lips to silence her. It works perfectly.
"No one has done anything to me. But until things come together, I promised not to tell anyone."
"Do you swear to me that nothing has been done to you?" asked Laia, frowning, with your finger still against her lips.
"Yes."
You roll your eyes as you see her looking at you squinting, as if to make sure you’re not telling her any lies. Then she seems to decide that you tell her the truth, since she puts a kiss on your finger before taking you all against her.
"I’ll lock you in my apartment, so I’ll be sure nothing will ever happen to you" she grumble, making you smile.
"Or you can stay at mine. For like, ever?"
A few seconds pass and Laia finally gets up a little to look at you better.
"Are you asking me to move in with you?"
"Only if you say yes"
Your answer seems to amuse her a little and you bite your lip. She seems to hesitate and you know perfectly well why.
"Shouldn’t we announce our relationship to others before that?"

"Leave our country alone!" they say "This isn't your land - go back to where you came from!"
And as my brother's being shoot, And my sister's being paraded naked - For their great sin of: living [Re'im, Israel, 2023]
As my great-grandfather was pushed down in the streets And his beard was brutally shaved As they raped and enslaved and murdered- [Birkenau, Poland, 1943]
[just like in 1941 Farhud, Iraq ; Jedwabne pogrom;  1945 Tripoli pogrom, the 1946 Kielce pogrom, and the 1947 Aleppo pogrom]
In 1934 there were pogroms against Jews in Turkey and Algeria.
Other parts of my family were lucky enough to survive the 1929 Hebron massacre during the 1929 Palestine riots. [Mandatory Palestine under British administration]
In 1919, soldiers marched into the center of town accompanied by a military band and engaged in atrocities under the slogan: "Kill the Jews, and save the Ukraine." They were ordered to save the ammunition in the process and use only lances and bayonets during the Proskurov pogrom.
[Proskurov, Ukraine, 1919]
[100 years, and nothing changed, huh?]
You know, my grandma's arab. I still remember sitting in class in high school, hearing about the 1840 Damascus affair, and thinking: hu.
I'll skip several years and countries, but:
Their grandparents were there to witness as the outbreak of violence against Jews (Hep-Hep riots) occurred at the beginning of the 19th century.
The 1821 Odessa pogroms marked the beginning of the 19th century pogroms in Tsarist Russia
That's  Khmelnytsky Uprising of 1648–1657 in present-day Ukraine.
So they said, during the attacks against Jews also took place in Barcelona and other Catalan cities during the massacre of 1391.
Their ancestors were cast away and murdered in Spain, 1492.
The same way we were banished and cast away from  Bern (1427) and Zürich (1436) for almost 400 years?
Let us not speak of  the alaughter on Holy Saturday of 1389, a pogrom began in Prague that led to the burning of the Jewish quarter, the killing of many Jews, and the suicide of many Jews trapped in the main synagogue; the number of dead was estimated at 400–500 men, women, and children.
Brussels massacre of 1370.
Or - do you want to hear about the 510 jewish communities that were destroyed? (1348-1350)  including in Toulon, Erfurt, Basel, Aragon, Flanders[16][17] and Strasbourg.[18]
Just like Rhineland massacres in 1096
Some of them made it to England, around 1060. It took less than 30 years for the first Podrom in 1189-90 in England,
Oh, and let us not forget 1066 Granada massacre [again, in Spain].
Or the  Alexandria in the year 38 CE, followed by the more known riot of 66 CE.
The Jewish population of the land on the eve of the first major Jewish rebellion [66 CE] may have been as high as 2.2 million. The monumental architecture of this period indicates a high level of prosperity.
In 66 CE, the Jews of Judea rose in revolt against Rome, sparking the First Jewish–Roman War. The reverse seized control of Judea and named their new kingdom "Israel"
The revolt was crushed by the Roman emperors Vespasian and Titus. The Romans destroyed much of the Temple in Jerusalem and took as punitive tribute the Menorah and other Temple artifacts back to Rome. Josephus writes that 1,100,000 Jews perished during the revolt, while a further 97,000 were taken captive. The Fiscus Judaicus was instituted by the Empire as part of reparations.
[And here we come to a full cycle of blood, land, and pain].
And those are only those I found out about. Only those we have a record of. Only those we know to this day. They were so massive, or left enough impact so we still remember.
[I could go on, this is just a short list.]
It seems like no matter what we do, we'll always be accused for
Let me know, please - where can I be a jew, and just
Live?

Hi! I was wondering, where did you get the cat figures? I am trying to hunt them down but i only found them on amazon.
Thank you! I love your work!
A Swiss store, but they don't ship internationally, so unless you can go to Zürich to pick them up it won't be of use to you.
But if you are Swiss or have someone who can order for you/ pick them up here are the Nyan Piece figures they have!

Peter and the twenty suits and somehow that story contains tomato aspic? Color me intrigued
No, the aspic was an accidental confluence. But there was definitely tomato juice involved. (Also: not twenty. But a dozen, anyway.)
...So let’s turn our minds back to those thrilling days of yesteryear (i.e. 2008...). The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators kindly asked me to come be a keynote speaker at their yearly get-together, which that year was being held on the island of Hydra, in Greece. Leaving the honor of even being asked to one side, I’d never been to Greece, so I more or less instantly said “Yes!”
(Inserting a cut here. WARNING: this post contains: business travel, alcohol, and lemon zest.)
...Getting to Athens was going to be just a tiny touch complicated because at that point, none of the major airlines serving Ireland offered a direct DUB-ATH service. I thought about this for a while, and (since I’m on a frequent-flyer program with them) it seemed the most sensible way in and out of Athens was to take a Swiss flight to Zürich, stop there overnight if necessary, and catch the next convenient ZRH-ATH flight onward.
So Peter and I did that, and we went to Athens, and from there via catamaran ferry to Hydra; where I had a fabulous time conferring, confabulating and otherwise hanging out with my fellow wizards writers. And when that was all over, we regretfully started the process of heading home. (During the first leg of which process I cut an unexpected notch on my webmastering belt by actually doing website maintenance using a Nokia phone cabled to a laptop, while in the middle of the Saronic Gulf, on a hydrofoil.)
...Anyway. Back through Athens to the airport, uneventful flight from ATH to ZRH, train from the airport to Zürich Hauptbahnhof (the city’s main train station); did check-in for our morning ZRH-DUB flight there, while also checking our non-carryon bags through to the plane. Then, dinner at Hiltl Vegi, crash-and-burn at the favorite little hotel that’s about three minutes’ walk from Zuri HB, and up early the next morning for the train back to the airport: straight through security, and airside.
This version of “airside” was going to be a little more interesting for us than usual, because we’d been flown business class on this run. As a result we could get into one of the Swiss lounges, which are justly famous for their general poshness. More than that: since we were flying to a non-Schengen country, we would be leaving from the (relatively) new and shiny Terminal E.
So we did the underground people-mover underneath the runways and came out in the new terminal, and headed upstairs for the business lounge.
It was large; it was gorgeous. And the view out across the runways to the Alps was amazing. (Though that view was slightly impeded by what was, it was then said, the longest lounge bar in Europe.)
Tumblr media
That was, granted, interesting enough. But our attention wasn’t primarily on that. What we were both most interested in when we first got there was a little something to eat and drink while we waited for the 11 AM-ish departure.
Now, this was long before that lounge had been renovated to contain a live open kitchen with hot and cold running chefs. In 2008 there were, however, free snack stations with assorted junk food—chips/crisps and pretzels and nuts, etc—and (that time of day) casual breakfast makings: cereals and milk, and mueslis and yogurts, and breads and butters and jams and cheeses and cold cuts and so forth.... such as you’d normally find in a central European breakfast buffet. There was also a coffee island nearby...
Tumblr media
...and a drinks station with juices and sparkling water and soft drinks and beer and wine. Next to that one was a selection of basic alcohols and mixers.
Tumblr media
...The lounge was pretty full of people that morning: a lot of business folk were apparently getting ready to board pre-lunch or lunchtime flights. A lot of them were up at the bar for coffee or whatever, and the bar staff had their hands full. We’d had our coffee and our breakfast, and then Peter looked over his shoulder at the juice-and-drinks setup, and said, “You know, I might have a Bloody Mary.”
“Okay,” I said. “Make me one too?” Because we were in no rush, and this whole situation was looking rather brunchlike. Why not complete the picture? “...And if they’ve got something like V-8, do mine with that.”
So over to the drinks installation P. went, rolled up his sleeves, scoped out the available supplies, gathered together the necessary ingredients, and started making Bloody Marys with his usual air of proficiency. (If you’ve ever been at a convention where he happened to be doing bartender duty—such as a Minicon or similar—you’ll know what I mean. A careful eye for appropriate ingredient amounts, and great thoughtfulness about seasoning.)
He made mine first, and brought it over to where we’d been sitting. And then he went back and started making his. I wasn’t paying much attention to that: I was mostly drinking mine and gazing at the Alps. (If you put me within sight of mountains, I’ll be staring at them. It’s what I do.) ...And eventually I turned around to see if he was done making his, because I was thinking maybe I might want another one.
Except I couldn’t see him. He was surrounded by suits. (Or, more accurately, people wearing them.)
He was making them all Bloody Marys.
Yeah, okay, the bar was busy. But apparently somebody had seen Peter using the bar measures at the drinks station to get the shot sizes just right, and saw him teaspoon-measuring the Worcestershire sauce, and doing the dash-of-Tabasco thing, and employing the lemon zester, and and and... They got suckered in by the air of expertise, is all I can suggest. Guys in suits (and a couple/few very well-suited ladies) had begun surrounding him and asking him questions, most of them apparently beginning, “Sir, what are you doing? What is that?” and “What are you putting in there?” ...and eventually, “Would you show me how?”, and/or “Would you also make one for me?”
...And so he did. What can I tell you? ...I couldn’t see him well, except when someone in the surrounding group moved aside a little. (They totaled ten or twelve people, finally, as they drifted in and out.) ...But there he was at the core of that group, surrounded by an extremely complex comics-style talk-balloon of queries in several languages (it was Switzerland, after all; just in-country, you’ve got five or more to choose from...). Some of those people were translating for other ones. And celery and tomato juice and Ireland and science fiction and Tabasco and Star Trek were being discussed (and V-8: turned out there wasn’t any...) and God knows what else. And all these nice people in suits, one after another, were being equipped with Bloody Marys.
Eventually the crowd thinned out to nothing, and finally Peter came back with his own Bloody Mary, and sat down, shaking his head. Then he showed me a little sheaf of business cards.
We went through them. Futures traders and a couple of publishing execs and a guy who worked sales at the company that builds Irish pubs for international export and the lady who brokered high-end underground rare-cheese storage and the guy who did logistics on worldwide custom transport of organs for transplant. And a lot of offers to “Call me/us when you’re in town and let me/us buy you a drink to thank you.”
I shook my head. “Networking?” was all I could find to say at last.
Peter shrugged. “With tomato juice.”

The Habit He Can’t Break, 1/4
IQ 123 | Gordon Masson | 9.11.2023
Usually, when an act completes a world tour, they come off the road for an extended period to rest, record new material, and then typically two or three years later, the wheels are set in motion for an album, released, promo, and tour dates.
Louis Tomlinson did not get that memo.
His first solo tour ran late due to the pandemic restrictions, meaning that by the time it concluded in September 2022, his second album, Faith in the Future, was scheduled to drop and tickets for the associated tour were ready to go on sale.
“This tour went on sale late October or November - basically a year in advance,” explains agent, Holly Rowland, who represents Tomlinson alongside Alex Hardee, internationally, while Wasserman Music colleagues, Marty Diamond and Ash Mowry-Lewis do likewise for North America.
Despite that quick turnaround between tours, Rowland reports that ticket sales for the current tour are going very well indeed. “The first leg went through Scandinavia before doing the Baltics and Eastern Europe – Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece – places that most people, especially arena-level acts, don’t really go. And the second leg, which is more mainland Europe, started 2 October.”
The tour is big. Very big for just a second outing in his own name.
Between May and July this year, Tomlinson played 39 dates in the US and Canada across a mix of amphitheaters, arenas, pavilions, and stadiums. In August, he returned to Europe, where he currently is in the midst of another 39 dates in arenas across the continent and the UK, which will take him to 18 November. Then, in early 2024, the Faith in the Future tour goes to Australia for two outdoor dates in Melbourne and Brisbane, before he takes the show to the country’s biggest indoor venue, the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.
And, as IQ went to press, Louis Tomlinson released dates for a return to Latin America in May 2024 for a mix of indoor and outdoor shows, including stadia, across Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay.
“We’re going to Australia and part of Asia early next year,” states artist manager Matt Vines of London-based Seven 7 Management. We then go into Latin America in May and June. And then we’ll handpick a selection of festivals next summer, before we draw the line on the campaign at the end of the summer.”
Rowland comments, “The tour before obviously was a Covid tour where the dates had to be chopped and changed. The positive aspect of that was that we were able to upgrade venues where that made sense. But it was really nice to start from scratch on this tour to make sure the routing was all going in the right direction.”
Back to You
Playing a major role in shifting that ticketing inventory is a network of promoters also enjoying Tomlinsons rising star.
“On this tour, it’s mainly Live Nation – we use a lot of the One Direction promoter,” explains Rowland. “But for Greece, we used Honeycomb Live, Charmenko did Romania, 8 Days A Week promoted the three shows in the Baltics, All Things Live did Finland, Fource are doing Orague, it’s Gadget in Switzerland, Atelier in Luxembourg, and when we get to the UK, it’s SJM, and MCD in Ireland.”
With a total of 39 European dates, Rowland split the outing into separate legs, scheduling a break after Scandinavia, the Balkans, Baltics, and Athens, Greece, and another after mainland Europe, ending in Zürich, Switzerland.
“It’s a perfect ratio, if I do say so myself,” she laughs. “It was right to split it up – 39 dates is a long, long tour, especially with the American tour throughout the summer being 11 weeks! We made sure to schedule days off, for everyone to recharge their batteries.”
In Spain, Nacho Córdoba at Live Nation promoted Tomlinson’s shows in Bilbao, Madrid, and Barcelona, and reports sell-outs at each of the arenas involved.
“When Louis was last here, it was three days before the pandemic shut everything down in Spain. In fact, I think he played the final show before the market closed because of Covid.,” says Córdoba.
“Last year, Louis organized his Away From Home Festival in Fuengirola, and that also sold out, so we know he has a big following in Spain, and we also know that Spanish fans are super loyal. So, on this tour we sold out 7,000 tickets at Bilbao Arena Miribilla, 13,600 tickets at Wizink in Madrid, and 11,200 at Palau St Jordi in Barcelona.”
Already looking forward to Tomlinson “and his fantastic team” returning on the next tour, Córdoba believes it will be important to see what happens with the next album – and Tomlinson’s expectations – before making any plans.
“The most important thing is to keep the fans happy and keep the momentum building with Louis,” he states. “I am a big fan of the arenas, because the atmosphere at his shows was incredible. So, rather than look at going bigger, it might be a case of looking at other arenas in other markets. Whatever he does, we cannot wait to have Louis back in Spain.”
Stefan Wyss at Gadget abc Entertainment in Switzerland promoted Tomlinson when he visited Zurich’s Hallenstadion on 23 October and explains that he previously played the city’s Halle 622 venue on the first tour.
Recalling the debut solo outing, Wyss tells IQ, “At first, we announced a mid-size theatre club show, 1,800-capacity, but it sold out instantly. Then we moved it to Halle 62, which is 3-500-cap and that also sold out immediately, so it was a really big success.
“They’ve invested a lot in the production of this current tour, and it’s doing really strong numbers, so that’s why we decided to go to the arena this time around, where we set a mid-size capacity of 7,000, which is good for a small market like Switzerland, especially because he’s coming back just one year later and playing a much bigger show.”
Wyss adds, “He’s kept the ticket prices reasonable – and he never wants to do any gold circle or VIP tickets. I think that’s why he’s so close to his fans, because it’s not about maximising profits. Another reason for his success is that in addition to attracting a mainstream audience, he’s also getting the music lovers because he’s just a very good songwriter and has brilliant songs.”
Wyss also notes that with many young fans typically arriving the day before the concert, the responsibility to look after them is extended. “We set up toilets, we have security overnight, we give water away. It’s part of the organization that we will take care of the fans.”
Fresh from announcing 12 dates across Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, Paraguay, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay, promoter Fabiano Lima De Queiroz at Move Concerts reports that Tomlinson will visit a mix of arenas, as well as stadiums in Santiago, São Paulo, and Buenos Aires, during his May tour.
“Our first tour with Louis was supposed to be in 2020 and we’d booked half arenas everywhere – 5,000–6,000 capacities,” he informs IQ. “Louis was one of those acts who connected very well with the fans during the pandemic, so when we shifted the dates, first to 2021, and then to 2022, we ended up selling out and having to upgrade in certain metropolitan markets.”

I’ve seen that image of a small pride of lions in the snow before and I could have sworn it takes place in South Africa, not India (it does snow there occasionally). Are you sure those are Asiatic lions?
Oh, your ask made me go and recheck where I saved the image from and it turns out it didn’t come from where I thought it did alright! Whenever I add an image of my own to a reblog or post, I always choose them based on two criteria: the species of the animal pictured has to either be VERY clearly identifiable or, if I can’t get a hold of something clear enough, I go for pictures from scientific publications or zoos, that, by definition, have to be correctly labeled. For this post, I was after pictures of the lions they have in the Zoo Zürich, that’s famous for their social media pictures of their lions playing on the snow and only houses Panthera leo leo.
Unfortunately, it seems I wasn’t paying enough attention when browsing the image search results and, tracing my steps back, I ended up saving a picture that didn’t come from Zoo Zürich at all, but rather from… Pinterest 😑 I usually do my best to avoid it because Pinterest is notoriously broken when it comes to linking properly to the websites where the pictures saved there are found, and this one is no exception. It’s completely absent from the “source” provided by Pinterest.
So… given that it came from an unknown source and that the most reliable trait to identify whether the lions pictured in it are P. l. melanochaita or P. l. leo (P. l. leo have a loose flap of skin on their bellies and P. l. melanochaita do not) is entirely obscured due to the angle, this image doesn’t make the cut to be used here at all!
Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention! I’ll be more careful in the future and replace it with something more appropriate. Better yet! I’ll get pictures of both P. l. melanochaita and P. l. leo in their winter coats, so you guys will be able to see how their differ from each other!

Hello Jordan.
September 13, 2024
(Warning - this is a little map-heavy! Y'all know how I LOVE maps!!)
Greetings from Amman, Jordan!!  Salam! We have connected with our friends and met our delightful guide, Nader.  Let the trip begin!!!!
We escaped Zürich without eating cheese fondu, buying chocolate or a Swiss watch.  Yes, we have NO proof that we were ever there. Well. we did buy some grandkid stuff and we had a lovely visit, albeit much too short.   And before we leave that topic, I have a correction.  As we walked about this lovely town of Zurich we encountered some super busy multi lane roads and there, my friends, we found the walk/don’t walk signs.  So they do indeed have them despite my reporting that they did not. But they appear to be few and far between.
On Thursday, Sept 12, we flew from Zürich Switzerland to Athen, Greece.
This morning we flew from Athens to here.  WHY? - you ask.  Money my friends - Money.  Getting to Amman from a lot of places is not easy and not cheap.  I was looking for non-stop flights that were reasonable priced and had the timing I could work with and after much research - (OMG - you cannot believe how much time to put into this silly endeavor) I landed on taking two days and doing these short flights with an overnight in Athens.  Now - the flights were on small planes - and one option I had was to pay an additional $7.00 as insurance against the airlines going bankrupt.🥴. I took that option FYI!
But it all worked out perfectly.  We left Zürich in the AM and arrived in Athens in the early afternoon. The little place we stayed picked us up then arranged for us to be picked up for dinner on the beach.  SWEET!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And MAYBE the Greek Salad and grilled fish was delicious because we were in Greece or because we could hear the Mediterranean lapping right there  - but whatever the reason, dinner was delicious. (Our younger son, Logan, BTW - pointed out that all salads in Greece would be technically Greek salads - but this is not going to bring me down!)
Tumblr media
Today we got to Athen’s airport WAY TOO early but so what.  We had a coffee and before we knew it we boarded our flight on Royal Jordanian.  Now - let me say - WOW!!  The cleanest roomiest seats ever and we were traveling coach.  With the exception of one little issue - my gluten free meal was absent - but they scrounged around and I did not go hungry.  “Come ON!” To quote my youngest granddaughter.   I will say not exactly gourmet - but you be the judge.
Tumblr media
But would I fly Royal Jordanian again?  Why, yes I would.  A crappy lunch on this lovely airplane with attentive flight attendants was just a little blip.
Another reason I wanted to go through Greece was to adjust myself to being completely unable to read signs.  While in Greece there were somethings I could make a guess on and somethings I could not  - like the sign below.
Tumblr media
But once we got to Amman I figured I wouldn’t have a clue about anything - and it appears I am correct.
Tumblr media
So, somehow I thought easing myself into that would be a good idea.  BUT clearly the answer is NOPE!  So really the reason for Athen was money...
Anyway - Jordan:
Tumblr media
Michigan is about 2.5 times bigger than Jordan but Jordan has more than 11 million+ people, about  1 million more than live in Michigan.  And of that 11 million people 5 million live in Amman - the capital of Jordan.  A peek out of our hotel window lets you know this is a HUGE city!
A quick review on the location of Jordan.
Tumblr media
Jordan is bordered by Syria to the north, Iraq to the east, Saudi Arabia to the south, and Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories to the west.   For those of you who were flipping out about us coming here (MOM!), we are indeed close to the Israel/Hamas conflict.  Amman and Jerusalem are just a little more than 60 miles apart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But we are visiting this beautiful city and then going north to Jerash.  After Jerash we will be heading south to Petra and we will certainly be close to Israel - but no worries.  You wouldn’t want us to come this far and not get to see Mujib Valley , the Grand Canyon of Jordan.  Hopefully, we will get a look at the Dead Sea as well.
Tumblr media
When we arrived we had to buy a Visa and it was exactly as we had been told - EASY- PEASY!!  We stood in a short line - forked over our passports and 40 Jordanian dinars (that I got before we left Saline) and we got a single entry Visa and a welcome to “The Hashemitec Kingdom of Jordan.”  “Enjoy your time here!”
I’m so excited to learn about Jordan, the people, the geography, the history, their politics and more.  Already I learned that 85% of the land is desert and that water is scarce and they have NO OIL.  I admit I was surprised!  I discovered that it is a Sunni Muslim majority religion country (95% according to Wiki)  and I expect to learn more about this.
So the learning begins in earnest tomorrow and I’m going to bed.  We are now in Arabic Standard Time and we are 7 hours ahead of Michigan.  This adjustment is - like the VISA procurement - EASY-PEASY!
Tesbah ala khir. (Good Night in Arabic - and this is NOT easy-peasy). Also just for a little smile - my autocorrect changed that Arabic phrase to "Teabag la Kir" - which I'm pretty sure means nothing.
Salam

Sebson exes meeting years later
"Fancy bumping into you here."
Sebastian can't help but grin. There js a voice he never will forget, a lazy British accent and a smile evident in the tone. When he turns around, he finds exactly what he thought he would - Jenson smiling wide and careless, some more lines around his eyes that were obviously laugh lines, still as handsome as ever, his smirk still just a bit devious.
"I wouldn't call this place fancy," he replies, and Jenson laughs. The voice from the speakers talks above them, calling out flight schedules, but neither of them are listening.
"Fancier than some places we've met at," Jenson says with a shrug, and Seb laughs.
"Boyd's Pub?"
"Boyd's Pub," Jenson affirms with a mock-serious expression, and Seb opens his arms for Jenson to step into a hug.
He smells different than he used to, more serious somehow. He still fits Seb into the space between his arms effortlessly. Years can't erase some things.
"Where to?" Jenson asks when they separate.
"Monaco," Seb says, and a shadow passes over Jenson's face, quick and painful. "You?" he asks, to change the topic.
"Home," he shrugs. "London."
Sebastian knows that the flight for London leaves in around half an hour. His own flight isn't for two more hours. Charles texted him three times already about the delays, and Seb assured him he'll be there on time, even if he had to drive from Zürich to Monte Carlo. He wouldn't miss Charles' home GP for anything short of a catastrophe. There is no time to properly catch up with Jenson. He isn't really sure he wants to.
"It was nice seeing you -"
"You look happy -"
They cut off at the same time, chuckling. Jenson's eyes are bright, if a bit sad. Seb doesn't kniw what his face looks like.
"Say hi to Charles from me," he says, "I hope he wins again."
Seb grins.
"Kiss the newest baby from me?"
Jenson nods. The lady on the speaker says "London", and Jenson smiles for the last time and leaves with a small wave.
Sebastian watches him go and thinks that if Jenson hadn't have been so stubborn in 2016, they would be taking the same flight to Monaco now. It might have made flying commercial more bearable. Jenson always used to charm the flight attendants into giving him extra alcohol, and Seb always took advantage of that.
He shakes his head and opens his phone to text Charles something silly.

+ DOMINIC / TERRASIM
Tumblr media
Despite what her sister might suggest (wrongfully so!), Ophelia invites Dominic along to the Terrasim Open Day because she thinks he won't go otherwise. She wouldn't blame him if that was the case, considering everything Equinox has put him through, but she's glad he accepts the invite. This should be for everyone. Fee thinks, lamenting that it's not the case with the hefty price tag that will be associated with Terrasim. "Are you nervous? I'm kinda nervous," Fee admits, shifting from foot to foot as she finishes chewing her Nutripack. "I've just read about a lot of these places and I guess I don't want to feel...sad that we can't go there for real."
She glances up at Dominic, "Is that dumb? I can't decide." Ophelia asks jokingly and shrugs before another thought sobers her. She can come back as often as she likes, but most people in The Wards, and a fair amount on Equniox won't be able to. She frowns slightly. "Maybe there's a way to raise money for trips here. I know it's not our top priority...but it's important to learn about the past. Everyone should be able to." Before she can get too lost in planning a new initiative right then and there, the bot managing the line beeps next and they move up a spot. "I haven't been able to decide on a place yet. What do you think of these?" Fee tugs out her StarLink, swiping to show him four locations: Prague, Zürich, Hawaii, Costa Rica. @gloriouswhispers

Don Carlo at the Bavarian State Opera
Music Direction Daniele Rustioni Producer Jürgen Rose Don Carlo Charles Castronovo Elisabeth of Valois Maria Agresta Filippo II John Relyea Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa Boris Pinkhasovich Princess Eboli Clémentine Margaine The Grand Inquisitor Dmitry Ulyanov | 28.07.2023
The grey and gloomy weather did not hinder the enthusiasm of the audience at the Bavarian State Opera, where they gathered to witness Jürgen Rose's masterful production of Don Carlo. I only managed to secure a standing place for this sold-out production. Nevertheless, it turned out to be an excellent location at a very reasonable price. My view remained mostly unobstructed, making it a better experience than the more expensive seat I had in Zürich.
The staging was simple, kept minimal for most of the time. The first scene started in the dark Fontainebleau forest, with a giant crucifix serving as the centerpiece and a constant reminder to the omnipotence of the catholic church in the storyline.
The best part of the staging was the auto-da-fé scene. The condemned heretics were tied up on a woodpile as the crowd sang the chorus. A red carpet was rolled out, welcoming the royal procession, followed by a parade depicting the Via Dolorosa, and ending with the presentation of La Pietà. The final scene of Act 3 peaked with the burning of the heretics (with REAL fire), which is often cowardly omitted by other productions. As the curtain dropped, it was greeted by a rapturous ovation from the audience (including me!).
It was a powerhouse presentation by the cast, but, in my opinion, the best performance award would go to Relyea as Filippo II. His commanding presence and emotive singing dominated every scene he was in. While Don Carlo is the title character, Filippo gets the best moments in the opera, from his iconic soliloquy to the duets with the other characters. This version also featured Lacrymosa, giving another opportunity for Relyea's Filippo to shine. I spoke to a young audience member during the intermission (we were probably the only ones who were still under 30). This was his third time seeing Don Carlo, and he said Relyea performed even better in München than in Covent Garden.

Castronovo and Agresta were solid as Carlo and Elisabeth, respectively. During the Fontainebleau duet, they constantly moved around the stage as if it was a rehearsed dance choreography, but it never looked unnatural.

As much as I was disappointed by Tézier's withdrawal, Pinkhasovich was still a top-class replacement. The audience went wild at the end of his bromance duet with Castronovo's Carlo. Ulyanov delivered exquisite vocalism as the Grand Inquisitor, although he sounded younger than Relyea's Filippo. I don't want to label Margaine as the weakest link here, but I wish she had put more subtlety in her attempt at hitting those high notes. Nevertheless, she was dramatically excellent in the role of Eboli.
TL;DR: I would stand up for 4,5 hours all over again for this production and THIS cast!

Software testing again
@petermorwood and I have a lot of decade-or-so old video that for a long time now I've been wanting to find a way to improve, as most of it's just too awful to share. So I went hunting for solutions.
At the same time, a lot of software that I've historically used for processing still images no longer works with the new versions of Corel PhotoPaint or Adobe Photoshop, so I've had to go looking for replacements for these plugins / extensions as well. One of them was called Buzz 3.0. It employed a so-called-"sieving algorithm" that was good for producing watercolor-like effects—as in this image of a gentleman watching football at the back bar of the Brasserie Federal restaurant in Zürich HB.
Tumblr media
...Now as it happens, after a lot of digging around I discovered that the company responsible for Buzz had sold their algorithm technology to a company called Topaz Labs. So I went over there and did some research, and discovered that they'd incorporated the Buzz algorithm into a newer platform-ish app called Topaz Studio 2.
I then also discovered that they had an add-on app for the platform that does image stabilization, jitter correction and upscaling, and I'm experimenting with that now.
Check out this original video (circa 2013 or thereabouts). Link only, as I don't think Tumblr will let me add two videos to one post. ...It comes from Titisee, which is a little spa town in the mountains of the Black Forest. When he first saw this video (taken with an early Nokia camera phone), Peter immediately christened the souvenir shop in question "Cuckoo Clock Hell". No argument.
Here, though, is the same video after Topaz's app had a word with it. (Sound up if you insist. The ticking alone is bad enough. I say nothing about the chiming and cuckooing.)
This is a first attempt, but it's not at all bad for a test run. (I mean, the subject matter's still a touch freaky, but at least it's not jumping around as much.) The lighting changes and color-temperature shifts had to be managed in Lightworks, as the Topaz app wasn't designed for that: but whatever.
...Anyway, experimentation continues. Cuckoo clocks are easy. We'll see how this does with video of our cats. :)
