More (and more) talking about sustainable fashion at @zerowastevictoria festival at @fed.square. @afittingconnection Katrina Naish hosted with @aife.oloughlin from @salvosstores, @pmaxi_knit, Ben Kaminsky at @textilerecyclersau and @circulardesigner3d_ Nat Stratos on the panel. Much like the desire for a circular economy, I feel and fear there has been little progress in this area which probably suggests there’s a lot more talking ahead, and hopefully with some action to match! #reducereuserecycle (at Federation Square) https://www.instagram.com/p/CimktbTJMFi/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

April 2021 | I find the recycling process both infuriating and absolutely fascinating. Coming from Toronto where you can put almost anything in the bin and it’ll get dealt with, to Victoria where you have to wash, organize, and sort all your recycling was (and can still be a bit of a struggle). Got check out how it works here in Victoria and the South Island for the @capitaldaily. #Victoria #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia #Canada #onassignment #recycling #islandeecycling #CapitalDailyphotos #zerowaste #zerowasteVictoria (at Victoria, British Columbia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQb9u2ut1tw/?utm_medium=tumblr

Last week, I went on a public tour of Hartland landfill, which services the Greater Victoria area. I was surprised to learn that, despite extensive recycling programs and citywide compost pickup, Hartland still receives 480 tons of garbage every DAY. That’s 68+ truckloads. See where the tree line starts towards the top of the screen? That’s how high the trash will be piled up by 2048, when the landfill is projected to reach capacity. Talk about scary. In the spirit of Halloween, here are some other scary facts to consider: - 1/3 of all landfill waste is packaging material. - When your kitchen scraps & food waste go to the landfill, they produce methane and contribute to global warming. - Americans produces more trash per person than any other country in the world (although Canadians apparently waste more food & water). - Global solid waste is expected to triple to 11 MILLION tons per DAY by the end of the century. #thereisnoaway #trashisfortossers #reducereuserecycle #zerowaste #fightfoodwaste #leaveitontheshelf #plasticfree #trashtalk #landfill #globalwarming #victoriabc #zerowastevictoria #zerowastecanada #happyhalloween🎃 (at Capital Hartland Landfill) https://www.instagram.com/p/BplIrcwhHDb/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=yqflylsh7mbu

DIY simple produce bags today at Queen Vic Market. The plastic bag you get today will outlive you! One of the simplest ways to reduce our impact on the environment is to swap out single-use plastics with alternatives that are friendlier for the world we live in. Eliminate your need to use single use plastic produce bags ever again by making your own reusable bag. Every reusable bag helps because an average plastic bag is used for a mere 12 minutes and takes 100s years to break down. #shopsustainably #plasticfreepackaging #zerowastevictoria#consciousshopping #responsiblestyle #lowwastehome#lowwasteliving #plasticfree #ourplanetourhome#sustainablepractices #zerowastegoals #wastefreeplanet#sustainablechoices #zerowaste @vicmarket @zerowastevictoria (at Queen Victoria Market) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpCFg6tvWEG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

• @zerowastevictoria Sustainable Fashion – is it possible? - 3:00pm in The Edge, Fed Square - Saturday 17 September. Redressing the future of Fashion. Trying to shop sustainably is not always easy in a world dominated by ‘fast fashion’. While this makes high turnover clothing affordable, there are negative environmental and social impacts in clothing production. Learn where you can start, what you can do, and hear from some inspiring individuals who are shifting the fashion paradigm. Hear from  * Aife Oloughlin, @salvosstores, Customer Experience Manager * Patricia McCarthy-Henry,  Educator at RMIT and Knitwear Designer at @pmaxi_knit * Ben Kaminsky, @textile.recycling * Nat Stratos, Circular Design Practitioner and Consultant * Katrina Naish, @afittingconnection (panel moderator) Entry to the Zero Waste Festival is free.
