Last week, I went on a public tour of Hartland landfill, which services the Greater Victoria area. I was surprised to learn that, despite extensive recycling programs and citywide compost pickup, Hartland still receives 480 tons of garbage every DAY. That’s 68+ truckloads. See where the tree line starts towards the top of the screen? That’s how high the trash will be piled up by 2048, when the landfill is projected to reach capacity. Talk about scary. SOLUTIONS/ ACTIONS TO TAKE: . . 1) Sending letters (email/ fax) to the businesses, or handing letters to management 💌 - Don’t just shame the companies - Provide a clear statement of problem - Offer solutions . . 2) Surround the perimeter of the store of interest, with all the activists of your area 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 - Hold up signs that identify the problem, and solution - Have proper speech that clearly communicates to the customers - Hand materials to the customers (make sure they’re made of biodegradable material.. and read #3 below) . . 3) We can pay every customer to make changes in their actions.. 💸 (see below) ...so when the stores realize that no one is buying packaged goods, and everyone’s buying the “local” and “organic” produce.. only.. ..or noone is coming to their store anymore.. you get the idea.. 😆 - Just create some coupons/ vouchers.. - Get local businesses/ organizations, and community members to pay/ sponsor these vouchers.. (they get their name or logo on them.. with a feel good message)👍 - It’s money to the customers.. so when the customer comes out with no plastic/ packaged items.. and/or local or organic produce.. then you give them a voucher.. 💝 . .
