Davis tried to keep from muttering under his breath as Kate chatted with their driver, she was by far more excited than him to visit one of Zhang Oceanic's research facilities. Apparently, since they were one of the only ones to ever encounter a larger than life creature, they wanted to compare notes with Davis and his team.

He had no idea why an oceanic research facility thought that since they had a giant shark and they had a giant ape that they should compare notes.

Especially since their giant shark was natural.

Meanwhile, George was an accidental science experiment gone wrong.

Either way, they had been invited to come talk about their experiences working with such a large animal and the difficulties that came with it.

Davis would have rather had a whiskey drinking contest with Agent Russel. At least that would've been far more entertaining.

"Oh my gosh, look!" Kate suddenly exclaimed as the golf cart they had been picked up in finally came over the crest of a large hill.

Even Davis felt his mouth drop open at the sight.

They were looking down at a giant bay, where they could see a fin trailing in the water.

A huge fin.

"Ah, so you've spotted Haiqi!" Their driver laughed. "Apparently she's still young and is supposed to get even bigger!"

"Even bigger?" Kate's eyes became calculating and Davis suppress a shiver. She better not be getting any ideas of stealing a sample of megalodon DNA to add to her serum.

Shaking his head at the idea of yet another giant animal, Davis wanted this whole trip to be over.

They finally arrived at the facility to be met with Jiuming Zhang.

"Dr. Caldwell, Mr. Okoye, it's so nice to meet you," Jiuming smiled warmly at them.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, sir," Kate gushed. "I've been following your father and sister's research closely. I'm so excited to hear you'll be taking their efforts over."

"It's an honor to continue their work. Would you be interested in a tour of the facility?"

"Of course!"

Davis would rather do anything else.

Now, don't get him wrong. He wasn't against visiting any labs or listening to the kind of research Zhang Oceanic was doing. But.

He was a primatologist. He didn't study sea creatures. Maybe Kate had studied many different kinds of animals in her life, but he had stuck to animals that didn't live in the water.

So, he respectfully followed behind Kate and Jiuming, while letting their conversation become white noise as he looked around the facility.

They were passing by what looked to be a lab of sorts. It had many different kinds of tanks, all of which had seahorses in different stages of maturity.

However, it wasn't the seahorses that caught his attention.

It was the very attractive man that looked to be hiding beside the door.

Glancing up ahead at Kate and Jiuming, Davis had a feeling they wouldn't miss him if he stepped away.

"You good?" Davis asked, scanning the man over.

He was at least a foot shorter and a hundred pounds lighter than Davis himself. The smaller man was wearing a hoodie with the Zhang logo and what to be a wet suit underneath.

"Shh! Can't you see I'm busy?" The man snapped back.

Davis raised an eyebrow.

"Busy with what?"

"Hiding."

"From...?"

The man rolled his eyes before peeking his head out into the hallway and glancing up and down it. Once he was satisfied, he stepped out.

Davis had to tilt his head down to stare at him.

"Look, my... daughter and I are playing hide and sneak. We agreed that if she found me, we'd go diving."

Davis blinked.

He was half expecting the man to say he had infiltrated the facility to steal research and sell it to the highest bidder. Instead, the man looked nearly bashful as he mentioned his daughter and playing with her.

Smiling, Davis looked him over one more time.

"I'm guessing you want her to win?"

For his part, the man's scowl wasn't as fearsome with the light blush on his cheeks.

"Who are you anyway?" He huffed in response.

"Davis Okoye, head primatologist at the San Diego Wildlife Sanctuary. And currently the leading expert on genetically modified apes."

"You're the one who helped stop the giant ape and other animals in Chicago," the man's eyebrows raised. "I'm Jonas Taylor. I mainly help with the submarine dives. And you could say I'm the leading expert in hunting Megs."

Davis had heard of the megalodons being killed, but he would never have guessed to have met the guy who had done the killing.

"Looks like we're some of the only ones to have really fought giant animals and come out alive."

"That's one way of putting it," Jonas chuckled. "Only difference is I wasn't friends with the Megs before they tried to kill me."

"Yeah, George and I had a long talk about his rampage in Chicago."

"Do you actually talk with an ape?" Jonas squinted his eyes.

"In a way," Davis said while signing.

"Smart," Jonas said, signing back.

"You can sign?" Davis was shocked. It wasn't a common skill outside of certain circles. Not to mention, it looked as if Jonas was using ASL.

"It helps when you're under the water and can't talk. I picked it up when working with the US navy."

"Impressive," Davis said. Not only was the man drop dead gorgeous, but he was skilled in many different ways.

In the last few years, Davis had been approached by many different people. They had all flirted and offered him their numbers, but he had refused. He had been burned far too many times in the past. From bad relationships to seeing the worst in humanity.

But, as he talked with Jonas, he felt a connection he hadn't felt in a long time.

Here was a man that had worked in special services, fought against giant animals, and was definitely Davis' type.

How could he not want to ask the man out?

Before he could even open his mouth to ask, he was interrupted by a shout.

"Jonas!"

Heads turning, Davis stared as a young, tween girl came rushing towards Jonas. She had on a similar outfit to him and she didn't hesitate in the least to slam full force into him, nearly sending them to the floor.

"I found you! That means we can go dive! Look, I have my suit on and everything! C'mon, let's go--who are you?"

Suddenly, the girl's bubbly expression turned suspicious as she turned to Davis, her arms wrapped protectively around one of Jonas' arms. She looked oddly familiar.

"Meiying, this is Davis Okoye--"

"He's supposed to meeting with Uncle," Meiying butted in, narrowing her eyes.

"Uncle?"

"Jiuming is her uncle," Jonas explained. Davis' eyes went wide as the words processed.

Shit!

He was flirting with the boss’s brother-in-law.

"I got a little lost," Davis coughed, looking at Meiying.

"A lot lost," she snapped back.

"Mei," Jonas warned gentle before turning back to Davis with a smile. It was breathtaking. "Would you like to come with us for our dive? I know there's no monkeys here, but it'll be fun."

"I'd love to." Davis tried to remember the last time he had even swam. It had been a long time.

Jonas motioned with his head as he began leading them down the hallway, Meiying shoving herself into his side.

Davis kept his eyes firmly on the beautiful man next to him rather than the tween glaring up at him for flirting with her adoptive father.

Looked like this whole trip was going to be a lot more exciting.

Toshi. The Wall. Dr. Heller. Dr. Minway Zhang. The names of your friends who died by way of the Megalodon.

They haunted your dreams in the worst way possible, their deaths replayed almost every night. 

You considered yourself to be the luckiest person alive when they didn’t happen, which wasn’t often. Especially since Jiuming had a pet Megalodon living in close quarters with you, the thoughts of your friends plagued your mind.

You knew the Meg that was living with you wasn’t the one who did harm to your friends, but you couldn’t help but think of them whenever you watched Haiqi. 

Jiuming had a lot of trust in her and it always made you nervous whenever he got in her enclosure, you couldn’t bear to see another friend die. 

On one particular night, you went down to the lounge, where you spent a lot of time with Meiying, and just stared at Haiqi, watching her swim in her enclosure. It became a nightly ritual after that. You had a nightmare, you went to watch Haiqi. 

The same ritual happened tonight, you snuck out of bed, put some slippers on, and quietly walked out of the bedroom to the lounge. You were thankful Mac was such a heavy sleeper, afraid of what he would say if he ever caught you. 

You followed her every move as you stood in front of the window, the moonlight illuminated the water, making her look majestic and also terrifying. You had no idea why Jiuming would ever swim with a dangerous animal like this. 

No matter what bond he says they have, or how domesticated he claims for her to be, she’s a predator and always will be. 

Were you scared of Haiqi? 

A bit, yes. 

She’s a Megalodon, how could you not be? Two Megalodon's were responsible for killing people who you admired, your friends, your family. Although, you felt guilt for having any ill feelings towards Haiqi. 

You were snapped out of your thoughts and trance by a hand clasping on your shoulder. You looked to the your side and saw Mac standing next to you. “You scared me.”

“Sorry, love. What are you doing up?” He asked, tiredly. 

“Couldn’t sleep.” Your vagueness and monotone voice threw him off. “Oh, well, are you alright?” 

You took a few seconds to answer, debating wether to lie or tell the truth. “No.” He probably would’ve known you were lying if you said yes. 

“What’s the matter?” You wrapped your arms around your midsection, trying to comfort yourself. “I can’t stop thinking about them. Seeing them.” 

“Who?” If he hadn’t woke up about 5 minutes ago he could’ve put two and two together. 

“Toshi, The Wall, Heller, Zhang. I have nightmares about them all the time.” 

“Why haven’t you told me?” 

“It’s weird. I don’t know.” 

“Why is that weird?” You hadn’t torn your eyes away from the window until then, “Because it was five years ago. I should’ve gotten over it by now.” 

“You can’t be serious. We saw our friends die. That’s not something you get over easily.” He shook his head. “I wish I could, leave it all in the rearview mirror.” 

“That’s not how trauma works.” 

“I wish it did.” 

“You can talk to me, you know. They were my friends too,” He said softly. “I know, I just don’t know how.” Your attention was brought back to the window. “You can say anything, I’ll always listen to you.” 

You sighed. “I come down here after I have the nightmares and watch Haiqi. Watch her swim around, and I just think of them. I think of how fucking crazy it is that were living with one of the animals that caused the worst moment of my life. I know she wasn’t the one responsible but it doesn’t make me feel any better about her. Everytime Jiuming gets in with her it scares me because I don’t want him to die, he can’t die, he can’t leave Meiying behind. I don’t believe she’s domesticated like he says, I don’t think we can trust her.” 

“Come here.” He opened his arms and you wrapped your arms tightly around him, closing your eyes. “Thank you for telling me that, that couldn’t have been easy.” You were silent for a bit, just enjoying his warmth before you became tired. 

“Can we go back to sleep now?” 

He laughed lightly, “Yeah, let’s go.”

Meg 2: The Trench (2023)

Godzilla Minus One proved giant monster movies can feature great performances, deep characters and all the special effects/destruction you could ever wish for. Meg 2: The Trench is not an intellectually stimulating film but at least it delivers when it comes to varied locations, perilous situations and unbridled carnage.

Six years after the events of The Meg, Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) and the Mana One team are exploring the Mariana Trench and its population of Megalodon when they stumble upon an illegal underwater mining operation. An attempt to cover up the clandestine activities unleashes a slew of creatures thought long-extinct. It's only a matter of time before they make it to the unsuspecting beaches above.

116 minutes may seem excessive for what is essentially a well-made, big-budget version of Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus but The Trench is packed to the gills with content. Before the story begins, we get a flashback to prehistoric times that starts us off on the right foot. Then, we flash forward to the present as Jonas busts environmental criminals before returning to Mana One to chastise his brother-in-law, Jiuming Zhang (Wu Jing) for keeping a pet Meg in a giant aquarium. You're counting down the minutes until it escapes to wreak havoc. The question is whether it will eat its owner before it does. On the way down to the Mariana Trench, Mana One’s submarines are damaged and we enter a new chapter of the story. Jonas, his stepdaughter Meiying (Sophia Cai), and the rest of the crew - Curtis (Whoopie Van Raam), Sal (Kiran Sonia Sawar) and Lance (Felix Mayr) - have to make their way to the underwater mining base – the one run by people who just tried to kill them. Why? Because our heroes' subs are damaged beyond repair and there’s no hope of rescue in time. How? By walking on the sea bed with their fingers crossed because who knows what kind of undersea monsters are lurking in the dark (If you liked Underwater, you’ll love this part). Why is there no hope of rescue? Because there’s a traitor up in Mana One. Even if they make it to safety, they're just walking into a new danger. This is all before anyone on the surface even sees a giant dorsal fin poking out of the water.

The movie keeps moving and keeps offering something new every few scenes. We’ve got people vs. people, people vs. small sea monsters, people vs. large sea monsters, people vs. large and small sea monsters, battles underwater, battles on the surface and plenty more.

The dialogue is nothing special and makes the thin character seem even thinner but this film wins mega points when it shows you what you came to see. We had one Megalodon in the first movie. That’s not enough the second time around so the film gleefully ups the ante. Before they show up properly, there’s always something new happening. The pace ensures you’re kept entertained instead of wondering “Where’s that Meg at?” There are plenty of campy thrills, though I would warn the filmmakers should they try their hand at a third film. Spectacle only goes so far and now that they’ve proved they can do the shark aspects right, we need some extra effort poured into the human element. There are six novels in Steven Alten’s Meg series. Nine if you count the cross-over/spinoffs. There's no reason this franchise couldn't go on but take some lessons from the Transformers franchise and give us some people to care for.

Whether a movie is good or not depends on whether it delivers what it promises and whether there’s “a better version of this movie out there”. There is certainly room for improvement in Meg 2: The Trench. The twists and turns are not difficult to unravel. The characters are often thin or little more than future shark food. What’s plausible or realistic is often ignored. It also keeps you entertained with all sorts of wild developments and plenty of the sights you signed up for when you chose to sit down and watch the film. I can understand those who will call the Meg 2 “bad” but just as many will say they had a blast with it. (January 3, 2025)

Thoughts on Meg 2: The Trench

After many months of avoiding the movie, I finally watched it.

Contrary to what I initially thought, I actually really enjoyed the movie, it was good. It's a fun movie with fun moments and great characters with great moments. There's also a lot of heartwarming and wholesome moments which was what I was looking for as I watched the movie. The bond between Meiying and Jonas really squeezed at my heart, and Jiuming was a great addition.

If I had a penny for every time Jason Statham's characters was a fatherly figure/father to a child, I'd have three pennies. He's great with kids and it really shined in this movie.

Concerning my previous thoughts and frustrations with how they handled Suyin Zhang, after watching the movie, I've made some peace with it. Although I still think that they should've handled it better because she deserves better than a brief montage on the screen, but I'm ok with it. To an extent.

Anywho...

I'm glad to see more of Mac and Jonas being besties, they're bantering and bond is great, along with Jiuming as well, the trio we didn't know we needed! Jiuming and Jonas were two dads with their daughter and Mac is the fun uncle :)

I think Jiuming was alright in the movie, although I feel like his character was kind of bland at times. Idk if that's just me, but yep. Still a great addition to the movie though!

Loved how DJ really just brought his A-Game on and came prepared for everything, not repeating past mistakes. It was amazing and I was cheering for him so much!!

Pippin, the icon, made an appearance in the movie and I ain't complaining.

Jonas kissing Meiying's forehead was such a father thing and it really made me "aww" for a good minute. Their relationship in this movie was everything to me, and I'm glad they delivered <3 (also Meiying was wonderful all throughout the movie).

Cover Art for my MEG prequel “The Pup” 🦈

A New Dynasty is a re-write/fix-it fic series I created after watching The Meg 2: The Trench. My series aims to expand on Jonas and Suyin’s relationship as well as show how Jonas learns to navigate his newfound responsibilities as a single father and Suyin’s death. The entire series is titled under The Meg (Revisited) because it has multiple parts which leads to my rewrite of The Trench, A New Dynasty. It starts out with the one-shot series So Scarlet, It Was… which is a direct sequel to the 2018 movie, in which Jonas and Suyin grow their romantic relationship. Never Grow Up is a one-shot that takes place two years later, in 2020, in which Jonas works at the Los Angeles aquarium and is stuck in a place of grieving a dead Suyin and adjusting to his newfound life as a single step-father to Meiying. The Pup is a direct continuation of Never Grow Up, picking up where it leaves off, in which Jonas meets Jiuming Zhang and is conflicted on whether or not he should aid in the raising of the newly captured meg pup.

I wrote Never Grow Up back in May of 2023. It was meant to be a stand-alone one-shot and a mini continuation of the 2018. Since the actress for Suyin was not returning in The Trench, I theorized that she would be killed off-screen in the movie. I turned out to be right, and so I immediately wrote a one-shot following Never Grow Up in which Jonas meets Jiuming, called The Pup. I later wrote So Scarlet, It Was… a few days later, since I was full of inspiration and a little sad that almost no content for Suyin and Jonas was around. It also followed canon, and so because it fit right in with the other two one-shots, I decided to make them all into one series. However, a few days after seeing The Trench and while I was writing The Pup and So Scarlet, It Was… I got the idea of completely rewriting the second movie. I was also planning on re-reading the book series, so what I decided to do was add in elements of the books into my rewrite. This led me to organizing all three of my one-shots into my series. I have just now made So Scarlet, It Was… the first part of the series since it chronologically takes place first. It used to be third since it was the last one-shot I had written.

I recently started writing again and I decided to finally make a ✨cover✨ of it. This is such a passion project for me and I’m really dedicated to actually finishing this story and then start rewriting The Trench. Link below to the project on Ao3!

Réalisé cette fois-ci par Ben Wheatley (High-Rise, Free Fire), le long métrage écrit par Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber et Erich Hoeber s'inspire du roman de Steve Alten, 'Meg – La Fosse', comme le volet précédent.

Dans cette suite, Jason Statham reprend son rôle du sauveteur Jonas et partage l'affiche avec la star chinoise Wu Jing (Jiuming Zhang), Cliff Curtis (James), la jeune Sophia Cai (Meiying), Melissanthi Mahut et Page Kennedy (DJ) . L'équipe doit ici affronter non pas un mais 3 mégalodons, une pieuvre géante et d'autres créatures échappées du jurassique !

Le film suit le périple d'une équipe de chercheurs, menée par Jonas (surnommé le James Bond écolo par ses partenaires) et Jiuming, partie explorer les profondeurs de l’océan. La mission tourne à la catastrophe lorsqu’une opération d’extraction minière illégale met en péril leur vie.

Confrontés à d’immenses mégalodons et à des bandits sans pitié, ils vont devoir échapper aux terribles prédateurs en gardant toujours un temps d’avance sur eux.

Meg 2: The Trench review and watch

Plot Five years after the events of the first film,[a] Jonas Taylor has been involved in fighting environmental crimes while also helping Mana One in exploring a further deep part of the Mariana Trench where the Megalodon has been found. Following the death of Suyin Zhang, Taylor has been raising her teenaged daughter Meiying alongside her uncle and Suyin's brother Jiuming Zhang, who has acquired his father's company alongside wealthy financier Hillary Driscoll. Mana One has also been studying a Meg called Haiqi, who was discovered as a pup and trained by Jiuming in a reserve in Hainan. Recently Haiqi has been acting erratically, leading to Taylor being concerned despite Jiuming's enthusiasm.

Taylor and Jiuming lead a routine submersible exploration to the Trench, with Meiying stowing away to see the trench for the first time. Fellow Meg survivors DJ and Mac observe the group from the Mana One. On the way down, the subs are pursued by Haiqi, who escaped captivity the previous night; the subs dive down through the thermocline to escape but Haiqi forces her way through it anyway. Two larger male Megs, a massive alpha and a slightly smaller beta, appear and mate with Haiqi. While working on an escape plan, Taylor and his team discover an illegal mining operation in a station captained by a mercenary Montes, who has a vendetta against Taylor for his imprisonment some time before. Montes' crew was hired by Driscoll to covertly use the Mana One's access to the trench to farm rare earth minerals that could earn them billions. Montes kills his crew in an explosion to cover up their activities, which causes a rupture in the trench and grounds both Taylor and Jiuming's ships.

DJ, Mac, and fellow Mana One analyst Jess discover that the rescue pod has been sabotaged, forcing the crew to use exosuits to walk towards the station in the creature-filled trench, with only Taylor, Meiying, Jiuming and security officer Rigas surviving the journey. Jess and Driscoll reveal themselves to be traitors and attempt to kill the four, but the four escape the station in another submersible after a scuffle with Montes, who escapes to the surface through a buoy. Driscoll sends mercenaries to take over the Mana One while Montes surfaces and meets with Jess. As the crew surfaces, they discover the thermocline rupture from earlier which leads to several of the creatures, including the three Megs, a swarm of lizard-like creatures known as Snappers and a massive Kraken escaping the trench and reaching the surface.

Taylor's crew meets with DJ and Mac and Montes focuses the mercenaries on the crew after Jess is killed by a Meg. Taylor's team escapes to a nearby resort, Fun Island, to warn them of the approaching creatures. Driscoll, Montes and the mercenaries arrive at Fun Island to eliminate Taylor's crew, but they are instead attacked by the Snappers, who kill Driscoll and several mercenaries. Taylor's group splits up to evacuate the tourists as the Megs and the Kraken begin their attack. Taylor manages to kill the beta male Meg using a harpoon taped to an explosive before being attacked by Montes, leading both to sail to the beach. The two battle before Taylor knocks Montes into another Meg to be eaten. Jiuming creates a bomb out of fertilizer and along with Mac takes over Driscoll's unattended helicopter to fly towards the beach where Meiying is trying to help tourists.

The Kraken takes down the helicopter and Jiuming injures it with his bomb, attracting Haiqi who proceeds to kill it. As Jiuming swims towards the wreckage to save Mac, Taylor picks up one of the helicopter's rotors and uses it to fatally impale the largest Meg in the head. Haiqi heads towards Taylor, Jiuming, and Mac, but Jiuming uses his training signals to divert the shark's attention. Haiqi redirects her attention to a pod of dolphins swimming away. Making their way to the beach, Jiuming reasons that Haiqi escaped captivity because it was mating season, and discusses the possibility she is pregnant. Taylor decides that it is better not to think about it, and the group celebrates their survival.
