Zinba (Paths Beyond)
Any way you cut it, Zinbas are animals with a little extra oomph. These snakes play on the idea that what can harm can also heal, as well as the motif of snakes as a symbol for regeneration. Instead of injecting venom into their victims, their bite can release a powerful healing agent instead, and their presence turns the water where they nest into a potent curative. Canonically, they are found near Bloodcove in the Mwangi Expanse, but I’d put these amphibious reptiles in any coastal or littoral region along Graund’s western coast.
Tumblr media
The 3.x/PF1 parlance for them would be magical creatures, while PF2 labels them as beasts. This isn’t just a matter of being more intelligent; Zinba can also understand Sylvan even if they can’t speak it. This speaks to their connection to nature and the First World. Think about what types of fey the local Zinba are in contact with and how their relationship plays out. While Zinbas are effectively intelligent, magical anacondas on the Material Plane, don’t be afraid to let them grow to World Serpent sizes in the Feywild (yes, it’s a good name, I’m stealing it).
Zinbas are among the few bonafide living animals to make their homes in the Boneyard. The Lady of Graves considers them sacred as beasts that bring both death and healing. Most are mundane creatures, but a few are intelligent oracles capable of channeling positive energy through their bites.
The velstrec apostle Siren’s Wail is willing to unveil the secrets of the Plane of Shadow for the right price. For the information the party needs from her, she requires an exquisitely crafted martini made from zinba water, infernal gin, and Elysium vermouth. It will be a race against the clock to get all the ingredients assembled and delivered before the zinba water reverts back to river water.
Although their pale complexion earns zinbas the nickname “ghost snakes,” it is a double misnomer. Not only are zinbas vitally alive, they rarely leave ghosts. Zinba phantoms, on the other hand, are an essential part of the Mwangi Expanse and Shackles’ spiritual ecosystem. Reaching across from the Ethereal Plane, the phantoms serve many summoners as eidolons — including some who bonded to the serpents when the phantoms resurrected them.

Some Chinese Cartoons
[Disclaimer: this was addressed to one specific person. I’ll make a better post one day.]
One day I’ll add pics and make this actually formal and stuff. But for now...
我为歌狂/Music Up:
Summary: Two musically talented, insanely popular high school guys - but that’s about all they have in common. In fact, they hate each other’s guts. And yet, through complicated circumstances, they and two others join to form a four-man band, “OPEN.” Both individually and as a band, they face a variety of problems: financial, academic, familial, romantic, and everything in between, in order to pursue their dreams. (52 eps)
Commentary: This is set in modern(ish) day, real world. Made in 2001, so keep that mind when considering the animation quality. They do have a lot of good songs, since this IS a show about singers and pop bands. Overall the tone is pretty light. Some things are a lot more dramatic than they need to be but that’s fantastic. And a lot of the problems are highly relatable. Development of characters and relationships is def one of the selling points. HUGELY nostalgic for me and a lot of Chinese people it seems haha
Links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLkMLYnt73g the second opening.
战龙四驱/Go For Speed:
Summary: Two years ago, the genius high schooler Fei won the minicar (4WD) racing Nationals. But only shortly afterward, he disappeared, with only a short note hinting at why. Now, his younger brother Dragon follows in his footsteps, designing and creating his own minicars to compete in the tournaments and steadily working his way up through the rankings. Along the way, he meets many people, makes friends and enemies, and struggles to find Fei and his reason for leaving. (64 eps)
Commentary: Modern/slightly future-day, real world (Shanghai!!). Okay so this show is based around like the gimmick of “minicar racing” - not sure what to really call it. The races are surprisingly fun to watch actually imo, with the technological abilities of the minicars, interactions between players, and obstacles to pass... but you’d probably have to decide that for yourself. For me, the biggest draw was probably the surprising number of subplots, which explore the complex relationships between all the characters - literally every single side character is well established and developed. Family and familial relationships play a pretty big role. Revenge and forgiveness are there too. I got hooked into this show when it was airing on TV solely because of one character haha. Caveat that it starts slow, I don’t know how much you’d actually like this, there needs to be some suspension of disbelief, and the animation quality isn’t fantastic… rip
Links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb0tHRbyaek&index=30&list=PLQukwpGC9a0wfDv0ymEgGX-LydTKbZY_s (a trailer, in english for some reason even though i’ve never found an english dubbed version of this and don’t want to. It mostly focuses on the racing aspect, but as before, don’t let that fool you, it’s surprisingly deep. Come for the races, stay for the chars)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQukwpGC9a0zqrmIGCXOW1QVlfh6svY7y since when was this on youtube?? :o WAIT HOLY SHIT SINCE WHEN DOES THIS HAVE ENGLISH SUBS THIS IS A GAME CHANGER AAAAA NOW LIKE I MIGHT GO REWATCH THIS - just kidding, only the first episode. Man what a letdown
弹珠传说/Danzhu Legend:
Summary: This is a world where people have Danzhu battles: competitions involving channeling your magic energy into Shooters to launch marble-like Danzhu at targets. These objects have great power, but, so far, no one has decided to take advantage of it… until now. One day, a young boy who has always dreamed of becoming a Danzhu battler is chosen by one of the five Legendary Shooters. He journeys into the mountains to seek training from the Danzhu Master, where he meets the other four Legendary wielders and learns that their job is to stop the evil threatening to take over their world. (52 eps)
Commentary: Fantasy world. So this is like your pretty standard “boy discovers power and works to save the world” story, but still enjoyable in its own right. The gimmick of this are the aforementioned Danzhu. The Guardians are also very important; all Shooters are linked to a spiritual animal/creature/something that’s the basis of power. The battles are all very cool! Quick disclaimer: for various reasons I am more familiar with this show than maybe any other of the ones here. This fact made me appreciate how much potential this story had, but also made me realize all of its flaws. There are a lot of things it could have done better - character development jumps to mind, because aside from the MC and one of the antagonists, most of them don’t change all that much. Also there’s lots of recycled animation. Just keep these caveats in mind. However, I still found the adventure/plot/magic very exciting to watch, a healthy dose of idealism and humor as well as tension/smarts/raw courage, so if you’re interested in that aspect more, I’d recommend this!
Links: ALL THE EPISODES ARE ON YOUTUBE ONCE MORE PRAISE this is very helpful for me because when i needed them to be on youtube, someone had like taken all of them down, which was very upsetting, but now they are back again, glorious
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvQUvsPwKA0&list=PLZKi4aAqJS8dbVOUrKnDqNU4F4rnm8Ott playlist isn’t in order but you should watch the opening theme to get a feel for it - if you want even more of a feel, watch to 4:50, which is kinda like a prologue and a better summary of what I said above lol
开心宝贝/Happy Heroes:
Summary: Just read what’s on tvtropes tbh haha (link below) (Ongoing, 10 seasons, 52 eps each (except season 8 which was 40 eps) )
Commentary: Imo the best seasons were 3, 5, 6, and 8. After 8 the animation style changed a bit and the humor quality kinda went down…well, that might just be me, though. Either way, though, there are so many amazing earlier episodes, and I’ve gotten really attached to all the characters. It being a kids show, there’s no super deep plot or lasting impact of anything (aside from the last arc of season 7, heh. I remember watching when it came out in 2014 and flipping out bc I did NOT expect that, knowing HH) but it’s still thoroughly enjoyable. There are also two movies: the second movie is kinda confusing and meh but the first movie is pretty good and I think you can find it on youtube. In fact I believe all the episodes are on youtube, but I imagine you have those links already
Links: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKA3CuHXUxHflv9KAgEJyKQ is the channel with everything. Watch the trailer for season 8! It’s v epic and got me hyped when it released.
Tvtropes: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Animation/HappyHeroes
Movie 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUiA3nue22Y. (there are english subs too! haha)
Movie 2 isn’t worth watching trust me
星游记/Rainbow Sea:
Summary: Years ago, a man dressed in all red made a declaration to the universe: behind the largest black hole was a mysterious place called Rainbow Sea, a place where any dream could be fulfilled. Enchanted by the stories, people from across the universe joined the man in red in his journey. Unfortunately, no one ever returned. Rainbow Sea was scoffed at as a myth and a lie. The man in red was cursed, nicknamed by people as the Red Demon. The sinister organization known as the Galactic Eyes quietly gained control of the Solar System and numerous other star systems, sealing off the planet where the Red Demon had come from, Earth, and forbidding any ships from entering or leaving. Now, ten years later, the Red Demon's son Maidang has reached adolescence and is determined to fulfill the pinky promise made to his father before he left: to reunite with him at Rainbow Sea.
Commentary: Quality stuff right here. Best part is the backstories of all these characters, there’s some really moving stuff. The characters are p great - Maidang is so inspiring, Gudong is highly relatable, Diya is awesome... The art style (esp for their eyes) is really nice. ...Not much else to say off the top of my head, esp since the story is far from over, but even if it starts off slow, this is definitely worth your time!
Links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiB_oZBdi7k&list=PLF068DA90359EDE0D all the episodes. The opening theme/sequence was what got me hooked, you should def watch it (up to like 1:20 or whatever, then if you want like a prologue watch to like 3:07)
26 eps so far. Season 2 and after are apparently going to be “web movies” instead of episodes, something like 60 minutes each, and will cost money (rip) but I’m sure they’ll show up for free somewhere eventually. Fingers crossed this’ll be soon. Wanna join me in hiatus hell :DD
神魄/Zinba:
Summary: Kan is happily chatting with his closest friend on an ordinary school day when, all of a sudden, he finds himself pulled into an alternate fantasy world. This world is filled with Zinba, large and powerful creatures that may form bonds with select humans, called Linkers, for immense battle power. After becoming a Linker with one of the strongest Zinba ever to exist, Kan joins the peacekeeping Dux force of the kingdom of Toria and fights against the various evils threatening the land, all while trying to find his way back to his own world. (52 eps)
Commentary: Okay, so you know, I wouldn’t recommend this as much as some of the others on this list, esp since it’s the most recent Chinese show I actually watched, but it made enough of an impact on me to have it worth talking about. I started watching bc a) it showed up as recommended for me on youtube, b) the opening is SICK as HECK, and c) the protag of this is voiced by the same person as the protag of DZL, and generally looks/acts kinda similar haha. Anyway, overall thoughts: basically, it had a lot of unrealized potential. The world and the character designs are AMAZING. I liked the animation. The plot is interesting, with a surprising number of plot twists as to who’s the real ultimate villain. But there could have been So Much More development – we could’ve gotten more thorough backstories for the main crew, for example, or seen more of the world/magic/tech, but instead a lot of the people as well as Zinba just… exist, as static and boring entities. There were like two interesting characters total (Kan’s aforementioned “normal” friend being one of them heh). Kan himself was suuuuper annoying, esp at the beginning. (can you tell I really appreciate/prioritize the characters of a show?) However, some moments were quite well done and epic, and I wrote some fanfiction and commentary on basically every episode, so it holds a place in my heart. Also, there is a full English dub lmaooo (the voices suck but the translations for names/places/etc are interesting) (episode 1 has 318k views??? That’s a TON for a chinese cartoon)
Links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G83STZ9xcc the opening which is good and worth watching, https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQukwpGC9a0xatMI-KGO9SILZ5sSWfWXX full playlist, syncogon.tumblr.com/tagged/zinba lol

In another bit of boredom while waiting for the next patch to arrive, I decided to put together B’aiken’s immediate family like I did for Jiro Kuroda.  As with that post it got long, so details below the cut.
Top (left) and top (middle): B’cossen Tia and B’grayn Zinba
Both born on the island of Vylbrand, Cossen and Grayn were members of the Boar tribe who fell into the sailing profession by virtue of proximity.  Perhaps it was also proximity that both would eventually become pirates of the Rhotano Sea, operating in crews under the association of Lominsan alliances.  Both were particularly known for their bladework and one, the other, or both were dogged by rumors that they were members of the Upright Thieves.  Less of a rumor were how close the two had become over time. Too close.  B’cossen Tia was attacked one day by an irate Nunh of the Boar Tribe, and though he escaped with one minor wounds the pair nevertheless fled across the ocean to the distant land of Hingashi, where both had previously come to know the open port of Kugane.  Though foreigners, only a fool would have turned a blind eye to such talented infighters, and the pair found steady employment in their new home.
Top (right): Lord Takanobu Akechi
A minor lord whose land bordered the port city of Kugane, Takanobu had an eye on expanding his family’s fortunes and was quick to snatch up the services of the two wayward miqo’te.  Lord Akechi had no small talent for the blade himself, and together they trained a small but ferocious cadre of samurai and ninja which the Bakufu would call upon to serve as secret police and enforcers on the westernmost of Hingashi’s islands.
But dangerous work entails dangerous risks, and during one back-alley battle Cossen was stung by a poisoned blade.  Though he did not die at once, he suffered severe nerve damage which forced the end of his career as a fighter.  With Grayn pregnant at the time, the pair feared being driven from Lord Akechi’s service, but fortunately they had chosen a cunning and thoughtful patron, and were not forced to endure a second exile from their home.
Bottom (left): Tomoe Akechi
The daughter of Lord Akechi was born mere weeks apart from Grayn’s own child.  Takanobu joked that he would keep the miqo’te around so that the girl would have a playmate to grow up with.  In truth Grayn would be well-placed to serve as a bodyguard to the little girl, a fact which would prove tragically crucial some short years later, when a rival house sent an assassin to eliminate the child.  Though she saved her charge and struck down the attacker, B’grayn Zinba did so at the cost of her own life.  Boiling with rage, B’cossen Tia took up his blades and he and Takanobu Akechi led a reprisal which struck down every armed man and woman they could find, all but wiping out the rival house in an act reminiscent of Hingashi’s Age of Blood.  It would prove the undoing of the miqo’te, however, as the exertion (and, some said, the heartbreak) accelerated the nerve damage which had already left him too vulnerable to a foe’s blade.  He would not return to the house of his lord.
For her own part, Tomoe Akechi grew into an energetic young woman with fond memories of the cat-woman who had helped to raise her.  Much like her father she showed great talent for the art of fighting, wielding a naginta with superlative skill.  Though possessed of great beauty and grace, she hoped to make a name for herself first as a commander rather than a wife.  Ever at her side was the progeny of her girlhood nurse and guardian, a pair so close they were said to be like sisters.
Bottom (middle): B’aiken Cossen
In the Hingan tongue ‘baiken’ means ‘boisterous plum,’ a name believed to have been derived from the way she screamed upon her entry into the world and the days following.  It proved to be an enduring name, as the miqo’te child took eagerly to first crawling, then walking, running, jumping, swimming, and even swinging from the trees with no end of energy.  Brash and headstrong, she frequently fought with other local children, though she was always fiercely protective of her childhood friend Tomoe.
B’aiken’s parents took the first steps of training her to fight, though after their passing she was forced to find other teachers, that she might keep up with Tomoe’s own growth.  Fortunately for her, the girl would prove to grow up tall for one of her kind, blessed with great strength and quickness, her reflexes seemingly almost supernatural at times...as such she was said to possess a ‘third eye’ which saw into the spirit world and perceived an attack before it even happened.
Bottom (right): Nanigashi Shishido
A ronin of no small renown, Nanigashi was considered a relic from the Age of Blood.  Wandering the lands of Hingashi and as far away as Doma to sell his services as a warrior, he was a master of the blade second to none.  His lackadaisical manner and the way he offered his blade to anyone with coin, however, saw his reputation tarnished in the eyes of the Hingan nobility.  Perhaps for that reason he went looking for a student, someone he could train in the way of the blade and thereby cement his legacy. His path took him through the Akechi estate and there he crossed paths with B’aiken, then a mere twelve years of age.  Despite that, the young girl caught the eye of the aging samurai with a ferocity and skill with a practice sword that far eclipsed her age.  So it was that she left her own for the first time, following in his footsteps.  By all accounts it began as a contentious relationship, with the girl constantly pushing for her sensei to train her further, impatient to master the sword.
Despite that, as master and pupil they formed a deep bond.  Nanigashi would one day be struck down in a duel by the legendary Musosai, called to account for rendering his services to thieves and bandits.  Though she grieved her teacher, B’aiken honored his wishes and rather than strike the aging Musosai down in vengeance, she instead took up her master’s blade and returned home at age nineteen, now named B’aiken Shishido.
.
Tumblr media
At the time of the Battle of Ghimlyt, B’aiken Shishido is aged thirty-five.
Having last her right arm and left eye in battle years ago, the embittered ronin was often seen on the streets of Kugane, typically with a jug of sake somewhere on her person.  Rumors and memories of a disaster ten years past following in her wake, in the end she pursued the path left by her teacher and sold her blade to any willing to pay.  Despite her slovenly appearance and foul attitude she rarely wanted for work, for seemingly in mockery to her past tragedies her skill with the blade had only grown over the years.
Hingashi itself remained a land closed to outsiders, however.  As such when a strange miqo’te named X’shasi ( @shasi-ffxiv ) came to Kugane seeking blades to be raised against strange happenings in the Ruby Sea, B’aiken Shishido was the only mercenary willing to take up the cause.  It was the Scions of the Seventh Dawn who finally identified the curious talent the Hingan catwoman possessed - the Echo, delivered in a form that permitted B’aiken to ‘read’ the aether of a foe and anticipate their actions.  It was a talent that would prove supremely useful when she followed them to the land of her ancestors and took part in the freeing of Ala Mhigo.  From there it would be a long road to walk to heal wounds unseen inflicted by the tragedies of the past.
Notes on names-
B’cossen is named for John Coxon, a 17th century buccaneer.
B’grayn is named for 16th century Irish heroine Grainne O’Malley. (Zinba is a suggested miqo’te surname.)
Takanobu is named for Takanobu Matsura, a 16th century samurai lord who did business with European traders, while the name Akechi is taken from Samanosuke Akechi, protagonist of the Onimusha game series.
Tomoe is named for Tomoe Gozen, a 12th century female samurai
B’aiken is, of course, a port of Baiken from the Guilty Gear game series.
The name Baiken Shishido or Nanigashi Shishido originates from a samurai said to have supposedly fought a duel with Miyamoto Musashi.
Further note on B’aiken’s name-
Because her parents died when she was so young, and because she was raised in a foreign land, although the structure of her name indicates she is a member of the Boar Tribe, B’aiken doesn’t pronounce the B as an extended ‘Bee’ the way it ought.  In addition, her proper name is not ‘Aiken’, because in Hingan ‘aiken’ means ‘dog.’  Which does not indicate great foresight on the part of her parents.  After coming to Eorzea, the irascible ronin once nearly threw down with M’naago Rahz after being asked if she went by Aiken.  Fortunately others were present to smooth things over.

Al-Hajjaj Abu Muhammed ibn Yusuf ibn Al-Hakam ibn Abi ‘Aqeel Al-Thaqafi (40 Hijri - 90 Hijri = 660 AD - 714 AD), a commander during the rule of the Umayyad dynasty. He was born and raised in Taif. He later went to Syria and joined the police force of Rouh ibn Zinba a companion of the Umayyad king Abdul Malik ibn Marwan. Then his efficiency was noticed by Abdul Malik who made him a commander and sent to fight Abdullah ibn Zubair in Makkah. So he went to the Hijaz with a large army and fought and killed Abdullah ibn Zubair after a hard siege thus ending ibn Zubair’s rule. Then he was made the governor of Makkah, Madinah and Taif. And later he was made the governor of Iraq going to Kufa. He remained stongly in power as governor for 20 years and built the city of Wasit where he died. He was well known despite his piety as a brutal, oppressive and terrifying person.
Note: He probably had a mustache unlike the photo above.

And Ruh bin Zinba’ was traveling between Makkah and Madinah on a very hot day.
A herder living on a mountain approached him, and he said to him: “O herder, come eat with me.”
The herder said: “I’m fasting.” Ruh said: “You’re fasting in this heat?” The herder replied: “Should I let my days pass by in vain?” ٍ So, Ruh said: “You have used your days wisely, O herder, while Ruh bin Zinba’ has wasted his.”

ZINBA
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
この主人公っぽいお兄さんは主人公ではないらしい
気になったので調べたら、本家よりも先にベトナム語版の公式無料配信に出会ってしまった。
youtube
zinba... zinba...

→Tödliches Gift

Her breath hitched when her solitude was suddenly disturbed, hearing the curtain open and feeling him slide in right behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist.
This... was this the level of their relationship? It felt right, but she wasn’t... she couldn’t remember, but she certainly wasn’t complaining... Whether they were that close or not, they certainly were now... And there was certainly something more feral about him. The look in his eye, how his pupils had a more reptilian look to then, and that magnitude of aether....
“A-ah, hi, um... Zinba? I didn’t think you someone to sneak into the shower with people...”
