So per Jhonen, Irkens don’t really have friends because they’re so focused on their own gratification they just see each other in terms of whether they’re someone they can cooperate with to achieve their goals or someone they’d trample on the way to the snack table.

And I think that’s an interesting angle to consider when writing Red and Purple’s relationship. Like, the two of them bicker a little, but mostly seem to get along and enjoy being co-rulers together. They don’t seem to resent having to share their power or esteem, neither appears to have any desire to be rid of the other in order to have all the glory to themselves. But does that mean they actually care about each other?

I remember when I was a kid on the Nicktoons message board someone once wrote a fanfic or “Zim Zode” as they were called, where one of the Tallest grows slightly taller, and the other one instantly loses their position and the newly solo Tallest immediately drops them like a hot stone. No pity, no regret. Just “Lol, sucks 2 b u” and yeets them off to crash at Zim’s place because they're no longer an equal, just another lowly peasant. And that might not be what RAPR shippers wanna hear, but that feels very on-brand for the show’s cynical tone. Like, Jhonen did a whole episode about how GIR isn’t cute or nice and would turn on Zim in a heartbeat if he weren’t always distracted by food and stray animals. You think he wouldn’t do an episode about how the Tallest are Not Real Friends and have no loyalty to each other whatsoever? Especially since as leaders of the Irken Empire they're supposed to represent everything that's wrong with Irken Society? It's superficial social hierarchy, selfishness, hedonism, sloth, gluttony, entitled elitism, and complete disregard for others?

I know some people get around the "Irkens aren't supposed to love" thing by saying RAPR are just hypocrites who get to ignore the social rules because of their position. But does anybody ever do stories that deal with the idea of what happens when the relationship is no longer easy and convenient? Like how a lot of people leave school or a job or move away and their friendships/romances just completely fizzle out because one or both parties weren't willing to put in the work to maintain it when they weren't already in proximity to each other by circumstance? Or how two people can hang out and enjoy each other's company, but when one person goes through a rough time the other person doesn't want to be there for them, they're only there for the fun times? Or how so-called friends can backstab each other the moment their interests are in conflict and won't lift a finger for one another if it requires any sacrifice or compromise?

What about stories where they betray and abandon each other because that's what they think they're supposed to do. It'd be considered aberrant to not put their own interests ahead of anyone else's. And yet, they feel unpleasant. But these feelings are so foreign and confusing and contradictory to Irken nature they can't even recognize them as guilt and regret.

DE VERLATEN AARDE VAN OURENSMA GEEFT EEN UNHEIMISCH GEVOEL

Wat zal ik daar graag zijn. In het verstilde landschap van Reinder Ourensma. Met mijn neus in de wind er vertoeven. Een zachte bries streelt dan mijn wangen. Ik luister naar het gefluister van het lange gras. De halmen vertellen elkaar de geheimen van deze streek, dit gebied, dat vergezicht. Het geroezemoes overstemt onhoorbaar de stilte. De aren dansen als een zwerm spreeuwen in de lucht en laten de aarde zweven boven zichzelf. Als van nature kennen de grassen de natuurlijke compositie, weten de partituur en vallen in de maat wanneer de dirigent dit aangeeft. De dirigent, de schepper, de schilder. Ik zal daar graag zijn, me laven aan de rust en mijn honger naar kalmte hier stillen. Want ik ben zo bezig met alles en niets, dat de schoonheid van de dingen me ontgaat. Dat ik hunker naar een pauze, even geen drukte aan mijn hoofd. Gewoon een moment nul komma noppes.

Die rust vind ik in Museum Galerie Heerenveen, vandaag en tot en met 8 januari. Daarvoor hoef ik niet naar het Keltisch Ierse landschap af te reizen of op de boot te stappen naar Ameland. Ourensma deed dat al voor mij en bracht deze ongerept en zwijgend aanwezige streken naar hier. De velden lijken ongeschonden. Geen menselijke activiteit laat zich kenmerken in deze composities. Of het moet een verlaten landhuis dan wel afgelegen vuurtoren zijn. De natuur ligt er volstrekt sereen bij, geheel aan het lot van de elementen overgelaten. Een onwerkelijke kalmte, ongestoord vreedzaam. Alsof het de stilte is voor de storm, dat er plots uit het niets het rumoer zal zijn van mensen. Omdat mensen zich altijd en overal mengen en de rust verstoren. Zich moeten laten gelden als de kroon op de schepping. Het kunstwerk dat zonder die homo sapiens best kan zijn.

Het gedachte rumoer blijft uit tussen de ongekleurde muren van deze kunstruimte. Wanneer ik geluk heb zijn er geen andere bezoekers en kan ik me wentelen in de door Ourensma opgeroepen sfeer. Al lijkt het er op het eerste gezicht compleet geruisloos en totaal geluidloos, het is dat niet. Want in de stilte van de verfstreek weet de schilder een rigide leven, een taai zijn te leggen. In de grasstengels is de windrichting geschilderd, iedere spriet op zich bepaalt dezelfde koers als het geheel. Welhaast bovennatuurlijk is iedere grasplant een persoonlijkheid, is elke zode een individu. Zie ik normaal gesproken niet verder dan mijn neus lang is en merk ik de eenlingen in de eenheid niet op, in de schilderijen van Reinder Ourensma word ik met de neus op de feiten gedrukt, de omstandigheid van de werkelijkheid.

Doordat die zee van halmen wijkt op de compositie van de wind, iedere grasspriet het portret haalt en zich roert naar de bries, is de sfeer in het schilderij van een onwerkelijke schoonheid. De beweging in gang gezet in deze ijdele massa, want scheren wij mensen niet glad alles wat boven het maaiveld steekt, in deze schijnbaar onnutte stortvloed groen valt blijkbaar stil in de stapeling van stenen. Deze rotsblokken zijn door de eeuwen geslepen van weerbarstig scherpe keien tot ronde klinkers, edelstenen in dit landschap. Een steen is van nature koud en afstandelijk, maar door het penseel van Ourensma wordt deze zacht en bereikbaar. Door deze ronde vormen af te zetten tegen het beweeglijke groen blijft de compositie open en streelt de blik. De vierkant hoekig ingebrachte bouwwerken tonen het overbodige zijn van de mens. Het wezen dat in deze ruimtelijke en poëtische verstilling slaat als een tang op een varken.

Evenals de benadering van Ourensma tot het onderwerp gras gedetailleerd is, zo wordt de steen door hem nagenoeg op micro niveau belicht. Iedere korstmos en elke schimmel op de harde maar poreuze huid wordt gedetermineerd en is op soort te herkennen. Uit de spleten tussen de stenen verwacht ik ieder moment de scherpe snuit van een nieuwsgierige salamander tevoorschijn komen. Maar het blijft stil, die beweging bedenk ik zelf. Met het lijnenspel en op de speelse rondingen voeren mijn gedachten onwillekeurig een stampei op. In de meditatieve stilte doorzie ik reuring, soesa en spektakel.

Dat rumoer is zeker kalm aanwezig in het stuk “into the mystic”. De wat mij betreft meest opvallende compositie in deze tentoonstelling. Nevel hangt over het landschap. Het grasland lijkt onmetelijk groot omdat geen einder zichtbaar is. Enkel een dans van halmen en aren is waarneembaar, een golvende groene zee. Feitelijk is het een abstract schilderij. Simpel is de sfeer in beeld gezet. De meervoudige natuur heeft er een eenvoudige verbeelding. In de andere portretten van het landschap is over het algemeen vooral de hardheid van het buitenleven een stem gegeven, het weerbarstige van Moeder Natuur klinkt in de stenen. Een zachte streling brengen de grassen. Maar op deze grond heerst een onwerkelijke stilte, een scherpe realiteit, de fotografische blik van de meester. Pas achter deze façade bouwt zich sfeer op in de achtergrond. Het decor geeft de juiste stemming in het wegschrijven van de horizon, het optekenen van lucht en wolken en het schilderen van atmosfeer. Wanneer mijn blik over het veld gaat en de einder intrekt, mijmerend ins Blaue hinein, is de ambiance op een hoogtepunt.

Jawel, Reinder Ourensma is een vakman op het gebied van de schilderkunst. Hij weet op een welhaast fotografisch realistische toon zijn werken te componeren. De stilte is er meditatief tussen de kaders. Een beklemmend niets, maar aangename leegheid. Een rust daalt over de velden en in mijn gemoed. Echter die strenge waarheid van zachte kruiden en harde stoffen hebben een verlaten karakter, geven een unheimisch gevoel. Zo zet de beschouwing, de contemplatieve reflectie, me met beide benen op de grond. Het is te echt om waar te zijn en ik wil zweven naar de wereld achter deze, de einder waar tegen de horizon mijn zin gemoedelijk verzand in gefilosofeer.

SAM AND PAM

Alright. I was deliberately holding out on this until we saw Sam’s mother and/or father, and having looked at Pam, I feel fairly confident in standing by my first theory regarding Sam’s Seussian heritage -- namely, he’s a mutt. He’s a little of everything in the kitchen sink, with a pedigree that includes, but is in no way limited to...

- Who. Pam’s got a head full of humanlike hair, an almost surefire way to tell that someone’s either a Who or a Who-cross. Even if she didn’t, the rounded muzzles, lack of visible ears, sandy-white fur, and incredible flexibility also strongly backs up this theory. Specifically, Pam and Sam’s short statures suggest they’re descended from the massive Who population found on the nearby Tinytopian islands.

- Snuv. This one’s trickier because Snuvs aren’t the only creatures in the Seuss world to possess a “skirt flap”; we also don’t know if Pam possesses one --  although she does sport some very Snuvvian cheek fluffs -- or if Sam got this from his dad. However, the overall bell-like shape of Sam’s coat definitely suggests something in the Snuv family.

- Zower. Zower-crosses are extremely common in Yookia and Zookia -- their long muzzles and low hanging ears, not to be mistaken for Knox ears, can be seen all over both countries and especially among their guards. Pam’s ever-so-slightly elongated muzzle could simply be that, a slightly longer muzzle, but it wouldn’t be surprising if she had a little Zower in her.

- Miscellaneous. Just about everyone in the Seussian world can claim at least a little bit of something else in their heritage. It’s the little things, like the uneven coloration in their fur or Sam’s rough neck and skirt fringe or even just the way they carry themselves, that could potentially suggest any number of species have been in their family at some point. Given the way Pam’s hair stands up without assistance and how long Sam’s arms are, it wouldn’t be surprising if they both had a little Zode in there.

So yes. The somewhat polite term for these two would be Who-crosses. If you wanted to be a funnyman about it, you could call them Who-brids, but you should know before you do that every single Who-cross has heard it half a million times before, and that it wasn’t all that funny the first time.
