A GUIDE TO: SHADOW WORK

below is a step-by-step guide on what shadow work is, how to practice it, as well as addressing a major misconception that many people have about the process. if you're interested in learning about shadow work or want to find out how to start the process, i hope that this provides enough information to help point you in the right direction <3

remember: shadow work is not an easy process and should not be taken lightly. to make sure that you have all the knowledge you need before starting, conduct your own research on how to do shadow work, as i only used a few sources that i looked through while doing my own research on the topic.

WHAT IS A SHADOW?

Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes. - carl jung

a shadow is described as the aspects of a person that one forgets, hides, and or represses subconsciously.

all people have a shadow, there is never someone who goes through life without having at least one. shadows make up the people we are, and how others perceive us. our shadows are the counterpart to the self that we present to others, it is our truest thoughts, feelings, wants, and needs that others, whether it be friends, family, society, etc., have deemed unacceptable.

these aspects of ourselves that we hide from others and sometimes even ourselves is called our shadow self.

our shadows are formed throughout our lives and typically occur in moments when we don't have the knowledge, skill set, or mental capacity to stand up for ourselves. these shadows grow when we feel like we can't express our truest selves due to an external source telling us that what makes us unique is bad, weird, taboo, etc.

most people are not aware of their shadows until their early to mid-20s, but everyone is different, so it could be much later than that. our shadows are karmic and are meant to teach us life lessons once we hit a certain stage in our lives, but only if we choose to acknowledge them.

HOW DO WE SHOW OUR SHADOWS?

Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves. - carl jung

our shadows are shown in the 3D by projection. if one has not faced their shadows and worked with their shadow self, then they could project their own insecurities and fears onto the people, things, ideas, etc. around them. when people inherit beliefs and values that don't align with who they truly are beneath the surface, this can cause resentment, fear, or even anger towards the ideals, beliefs, and values that they really do have.

for example, someone with a neglected inner child wound could have experienced feeling silenced in their home, feeling left out, and fearing abandonment. having feelings like this in their shadow self could result in actions like people pleasing, overextending, emotional immaturity, and more. they can project these actions, thoughts, and feelings onto other people and hold high expectations for others, often resulting in behavioral patterns. these patterns are learned throughout life, and then have to be recognized and broken.

"If you grew up a very talkative child, your parents might have told you repeatedly to be quiet or talk less often in social settings. In order to feel loved and accepted, you might’ve started to repress that talkative aspect of your personality. And over time, as you continued to repress those parts, your shadow held onto those feelings until they bubble over or they’re triggered by external stimuli." (Cleveland Clinic, HealthEssentials, 2023)

acknowledging these shadow aspects of ourselves and learning to accept them can help people have more care, love, and compassion for others and themselves in hard situations.

HOW TO DO SHADOW WORK

there are many ways for people to do shadow work, and it all depends on the person and their personal preference. Most people practice a few different methods of shadow work and stick to the few that seem to work the best for them.

a few ways that people could practice shadow work consists of:

mirror gazing

shadow work prompts (most common)

meditation

the shadow work journal

and more!

it is imperative that you try different methods of shadow work, and pick the best options for you. some options could work better than others, so it is important that you pay attention to how you feel after each exercise, and make sure that you're mentally ready for the work you are about to put in. do ample research on each method that you want to look into before attempting.

WHEN SHOULD YOU DO SHADOW WORK?

There is no birth of consciousness without pain. - carl jung

a person should only do shadow work when they feel like they are mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically ready to do so. if you feel at any point in time that you are not ready to face your shadows, then it is highly advised to wait before you delve into it.

shadow work is all about facing the parts of yourself that you've subconsciously blocked due to trauma, so it won't be easy to complete without facing emotional backlash.

if you think about the idea of shadow work and it makes you feel nervous, worried, anxious, scared, etc., then more than likely you're not ready to commit to your shadow work at that time. on the other hand, if you think about shadow work and feel excited, optimistic, motivated, and most of all ready for change, then more than likely you are ready to take the next step in your spiritual journey!

sometimes, our guides will give us signs that we are ready for our shadow work journey by relaying information to us through dreams, downloads, angel numbers, significant animals/items, etc., so be conscious of the signs that your guides might be trying to show you!

IS IT DEMONIC/SATANIC/WITCHCRAFT?

I have treated many hundreds of patients. Among those in the second half of life - that is to say, over 35 - there has not been one whose problem in the last resort was not that of finding a religious outlook on life. - carl jung

no. absolutely not.

shadow work is a process that was discovered by a swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst named carl jung. jung believed that there were three different parts to the human psyche; the ego (conscious self), the personal unconscious (shadow self), and the collective conscious (shared mental constructs among society).

jung believed that shedding light on our personal unconscious could drastically change the way that we interact with the world around us, as well as ourselves for the better.

shadow work isn't about summoning anything that wasn't previously there, it's about acknowledging the unknown parts of yourself that already existed so we can truly figure out who we are on the inside.

shadow work is something that takes time, effort, and willpower, but it is a safe and loving practice that helps people better their self-love, self-worth, self-acceptance, and overall mental well-being.

what traits / attributes do you have that others find attractive?

how to pick a pile? close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and clear your mind. feel which pile you're drawn to, and find the reading below the cut!

PILE ONE

the first thing i sensed was a white color. i feel like this pile is my very lighthearted, go with the flow pile you might see repeating 1s or 6s a lot as well. you’re someone who is very intuitive, whether you practice spirituality or not, your abilities have the power to become very strong if you so choose to work with them. you could have prominent leo/air placements, maybe a bit of taurus as well. you’re someone who is efficient in balancing out work and play, you know how to take care of yourself emotionally but still make sure that you get the work done. i see that when it comes to your dreams and aspirations, you put in the work but are equally just as lucky as well. you could be very bubbly and childish when interacting with others, but not childish in a bad way. you could be younger than most of the people in your friend group. you might be in a situation where you feel stuck right now, and i’m hearing to lean onto these attributes to help guide you through this point in your life.

i’m seeing that first off, people find the way abundance finds you easily attractive. you tend to be someone who conjures up an idea, and goes through with it not like after it’s curation. people find your creative ability and the success that comes from your ideas attractive. people might look up to you for this trait as well.

i’m also seeing that people find your sensitivity attractive. you can be very emotionally open when it comes to your beliefs, values, and ideals whereas the people around you might not be. a lot of people find your forwardness about what you believe in just as inspiring as it is attractive also.

people also see you as someone who is very trusting of yourself and your intuition, even if you don’t notice you’re following it. when you get a strange feeling in your gut, you tend to do whatever it tells you to without thinking about it much, which has led to great financial, emotional, and physical abundance. you’re the type of person to create a goal and keep at it until it’s accomplished, and people find that kind of tenacity very attractive.

i also see that people find your inability to give up attractive. you’re very resilient, and when things don’t go the way that you’re u plan for them to, you just find a different route to reach your goal. you never stop trying, and you inspire a lot of the people around you to keep at their goals as well.

PILE TWO

this pile had more of a lime green color, but the energy is much more forward and outgoing than what i was expecting lol. that’s not in a bad way though, i promise. this pile is more straightforward than the others, the first thing i heard while shuffling was “short, sweet, and to the point.” that could be a motto that some of you have taken on, or that could be how you handle different situations throughout your day. you could have prominent aries placements in your chart. you might be on a spiritual journey for some of you, and i’m seeing that you’re on the right track right now. you could be someone who is very good with money, you could even be getting multiple streams of income right now. you might be someone who dresses kind of flashy or expensive, and that catches a lot of people's eyes. you could be very happy with where you are in life right now as well and are taking the time to focus on yourself and your personal well-being. you could also be a very good conversationalist. air placements seem to be prominent here.

what people find attractive about you is that you don’t wait around. i’m seeing that you tend to be very active, but don’t let things go on for longer than they should. you have a paper to write? well you’re not gonna sit around and twaddle, but you’re not gonna write more than what the curriculum asks for. you need to go grocery shopping? fine let’s get it out of the way, but we’re only going in there for what’s on the list. you’re not taking extra time out of your day if you don’t absolutely need to, because you have things to get done.

people also find how you always prioritize yourself attractive. when you need to get something done, you have no problem saying no to others. you prioritize yourself and your schedule first, but you keep it respectful. people find the way you can keep that healthy balance between yourself and others immensely attractive.

for some of you as well, you could be a bit hotheaded. i’m seeing that a couple of the people around you (possibly in a friend group) like that you’re a firecracker as well. you don’t take shit from others, to the point where you might be a bitttt overly confrontational. someone around you finds it attractive though lol.

people also find the way you problem-solve attractive. you could be someone who analyzes every part of a situation and can come up with out-of-the-box ideas in order to get things done. you seem to pick up on small things that others might tend to overlook, and your great observation skills leave people in awe.

i’m seeing that people think your devotion to your craft is very attractive. you could be someone who works in a more creative field, somewhere with very fluctuating schedules and lots of free reign to come up with unorthodox ideas. you could be very good at what you do, as it could have always come naturally to you. people find your ability to effortlessly perfect your craft insanely attractive.

some of you could also have a significant other, and i’m seeing that they specifically find it attractive when you write. it could be a letter, homework, an email, whatever. but when you start writing something out you get lost in it, i see that they enjoy a certain face you make when composing it.

for others of you, i’m seeing that people find your ability to love others attractive. regardless of who’s done you wrong, you send them light and love anyway, because regardless you’re still living your best life. your happy and content with where you are, and if you aren’t, you’re working to become that way. you have no time to worry about people who aren’t putting money in your pockets, so why give them the time of day? we love to see it.

PILE THREE

this is my navy blue pile. you guys give off more moon in scorpio vibes, or could give off a “black panther”-esque appearance. water placements (especially scorpio) are very prominent here. you could have scorpio in your big three, if not then your big six (sun, moon, rising, venus, mercury, mars). you could have just come out of a “dark knight of the soul” moment, and are being recovering and healing from the work you’ve put in. you could be spiritual or have very spiritual friends. i’m seeing that you’re someone who is very introspective. you pay close attention to the aspects of yourself that might be “taboo” or “weird” by societal standards. i’m seeing that you could been breaking that cycle for yourself here. you could be seeing repeating 2’s as well. if you had close friends or family who were watching you go through your shadow work, im seeing that they really admire you and think you’re very strong for staying strong and optimistic through everything that happened. doing your shadow work definitely wasn’t easy, but to them you make it look that way. you could have also gained new communication recently, possibly from someone who hurt you. i’m seeing to keep looking up though, you have the tools necessary to make the best decision for yourself about whether they deserve a second chance or not.

first off, people find how mysterious you are very attractive. you could be someone who keeps their thoughts, ideas, plans, etc. to themselves. you could also really like to listen, so allowing people to talk about themselves rather than opening up about your own self makes people very intrigued by you.

people also find the way that you live your truth attractive. you may not be someone who opens up to others immediately, but you are open and true to yourself and your spirituality. you might be very educated in things like tarot, astrology, numerology, etc., and could be very vocal about your beliefs on it. your expressive about your purpose and soul mission here on earth and you don’t care who thinks it’s weird, at least not anymore.

something else people find attractive about you is how much you stand out. i feel like you might be more reserved and introverted, yet when you walk into a room, you capture everyone’s attention. whereas this may be uncomfortable for you, people are looking because of how much you stand out among others. your mysterious nature and aura leave people's mouths open and eyes wide.

you could also be quite different from the people in your family. you could be the only one who chose spiritually, while everyone rose might have gone with a different faith. people find your strength to be unique and true to yourself attractive and inspiring. people look up to you when it comes to living in their own truth and not caring about what others will think of the way you choose to live your life.

people also find you attractive because they feel like they have to earn your approval. you’re like an ethereal being, one who holds their head high and knows what they want. you won’t settle for less, so everyone else needs to make sure that they come correct. people admire this energy and understand that if they want to be in your inner circle, then they have to deep themselves worthy first. this level of self-love and respect is very attractive to others around you.
