Doing my part for the 2020 election. The USPS ran out of postcards so I had to design some on the fly, using the candidates’ facial profiles. No copy machine here, just drawing and writing the same thing over and over. Handwritten postcards have proven effective to motivate voters. Excited to see my friend, Cara’s documentary release today examining her upbringing as a fellow born and raised “Moonie” from the Unification Church. She went to great lengths to give a glimpse of what was expected of us, including footage of an arranged marriage mass wedding (after participating in one as a young adult) and labor trafficking practices.

This is more of a personal story than investigative journalism and is one of many, but that her dad was the president of the American chapter of the Church in its early days gives it a unique perspective. I was happy to participate in it as well, though my interview was seven years ago so my views might have changed a bit since, but not much. Either way, happy to see this out in the world 🙌

Roy reached out to me after my appearance on the Explained: Cults docuseries episode on Netflix. Part 2 of my interview on the IndoctrNation Podcast. In the wake of the mass shooting epidemic in the US, I read an excerpt from Sun Myung Moon’s order for church members to prioritize selling guns to the US. As a multimillionaire with businesses, political influence, and thousands of followers around the world, also founding The Washington Times which Fox News and other far right sources often reference, I don’t doubt he and members of his family—particularly his son’s offshoot group requiring members to own AR-15s (in the image)—have everything to do with this problem of our times. From Moon’s order to church members in 1969, @12:30 of the interview: “All [church members] must take an interest in guns now that I am doing business with guns while on earth...If I told [members questioning this] that we had sold 50,000 or 100,000 guns in Japan, the American members would feel compelled to sell even more than that. I went around the United States and investigated. America is a golden market; it is virgin soil. There are unlimited resources there, which is why it is possible to sell more than these numbers.”

I feel lucky to have been interviewed about my research on cults, and my childhood in the Unification Church (the Moonies) on the Indoctrination podcast with Rachel Bernstein. As a longtime therapist, she is a wise and engaging host who gives proper insight in her responses and concluding summaries. It’s what really makes this podcast stand out.

I go into rituals like waking up at 5am every Sunday, reciting a militaristic pledge to a picture of the cult leader as a family, and more. I think it’s important that people understand the power of social influence by charismatic, “promised land” figures/groups, and that anyone is susceptible to it.
