what? i have no idea what you’re talking about. i’m guessing you have a preconceived idea of what a latine should look / sound / do based on the “classic” latines that you see in the media all the time, like:

and they’re great, but there’s also white latines, like:

and don’t forget about the black latines, such as:

and the indigenous latines are also very important:

and there’s also chinese latines, like Harry Shum, Jr. yeah, thay guy from glee and the shadowhunters (the netflix show). i don’t know if he self identifies as latino, but he was born in Costa Rica and lived there for six years, so that makes him latino by definition.

in fact, there’s presence of many asian racial / ethnic groups, but they’re not very common in the media. that’s why i’m not including any pictures. but they’re here and we love them.

and let’s not even talk about the mixing going on with all of the above because this post could go on for years

so bottom line: 

latinoamérica is a big beautiful melting pot of everything

latine is not a skin color, it’s an ethnicity

there’s no such thing as “looking latine”. all latines are different

and it is possible that not every latine self identifies as poc

I feel like there needs to be some kind of post for MCU fans on How To Write About Africa because I feel like there’s a lot of people out there who want to write about Wakanda and T'Challa but are worried about being problematic and that makes me sad because there’s SO MUCH GREAT meta to be had about T'Challa and Wakanda but at the same time there’s a lot of legitimate concerns about perpetuating racist stereotypes and yeah.

T'Challa and Wakanda could be such a great way to introduce people to amazing sci-fi concepts that people should know

hey guys!

so there’s this up-and-coming game called the office type, which is a dating sim where you can date characters based on office supplies. it’s been getting a lot of negativity lately, but i just want to give my opinion, as a certified nonbinary person™

in my opinion, i really like the way they’re representing nonbinary people. although the first two nonbinary characters they revealed might have fit into a certain stereotype e.g. white, skinny, androgynous but masculine-leaning – they were just the first two characters. if you take a look at some of the characters they’ve recently released (and there’s still 3 more sets to go!) the characters are super diverse. i love toni and ty’s designs – they represent nonbinary people in a realistic way. nonbinary people can be of any race; they can be tall or short or skinny or fat or muscular or have long hair or be bald or have a beard. i’ve never seen nonbinary people portrayed in this way before, and it honestly makes me really happy to see. and 1/3 of the characters are nonbinary! that’s 8 characters in one game! and some of the other characters are also confirmed trans, such as teresa.

i know that there’s been some controversy surrounding it but if you’ve been put off the game by those posts you should at least have a look at the characters and the dev’s explanation and judge for yourself what you think of it. i’m not going to tell you that you have to like it, because you may not! but i am personally going to be buying and supporting the game. it may not be the perfect, but it’s a start and i am excited for where it will go; i think that it’s a big step in nonbinary and trans representation and for the future of gaming.

To anyone who still might be wary of The Office Type, we encourage you to give it another shot.  We’re still early in development, but we’ve been releasing more of our characters and we love all of the excitement so far!

We have a team including several talented people who are non-binary, transgender, people of color, and various sexualities, and we’ve been talking with the community to incorporate proper representation.  If you have concerns, please voice them!  You may be surprised by what we can do to round out our game.  We’re not promising perfect representation.  But our community agrees that we’ve been making good progress, and you’re getting a funny, heartfelt experience in the process.  Please don’t dismiss the hard work of our team.
