[the-epitome-of-routine]

the deer are safe in the cemetery

where they don't have to be wary

of the cars and people roaming

only those who grieve.

and grieving people do not hunt them

only enter, few at a time

sit on benches one by one

and let the robins see them cry.

Meanwhile in the trees above

the woodland creatures return home

to see their eggs opening up

among a land of mourning stones.

As evening falls the people go

the animals come out again

and treads a doe to eat the tulips

across the meadow sowed with men.

The dead are sleeping, a gentle step

Will not wake them

But here and now

people are living

And so the earth

will keep breathing

and turn

and turn

.

rituals

there is a pair of pants with evil embroidered into the stitches

I know because I once lived a bad day in them.

Now I can't touch them, or it will pass on its invisible luck

just like the soap I cannot wash with,

or it will bring dirt to my hands.

Power. Power,

I watch it slip away

a hair sliding down the shower drain.

These rituals, step here

do not touch your hand to that venomous doorknob

do not walk clockwise today, it will change your fate.

You can hear me, can't you?

I didn't mean it, but how can I believe me?

Power, fear

whichever will win

I try to wash myself clean while singing last rites.

These things can't kill me, but I can,

And when I look in the mirror

I shy away from my own eyes quickly

because I know if I look for too long, they

too

will no longer be mine.

I always reach for fear first

put it down nearby when I'm done with it

Then it's conveniently nearby

and the next time I want to know how to feel

it's the easiest thing to grab
