I wonder if one of the reasons that it’s so hard for content creators (especially fic writers) to get comments is because of the tumblr culture of like…
how dare you make a comment when you reblog. how dare you.
Like, we all know that right? Like, this whole culture of commenting directly in the comment box when reblogging is seen as heinous and awful and YOU SHOULD COMMENT IN THE TAGS INSTEAD. Especially if it’s seen as “unnecessary” (as in not adding to a conversation, or it’s just like “THIS” or “YAY” or something).
I mean, I’ve been on Tumblr since 2011, and I know that got burned into my brain. I still struggle with it, whether in feeling irritated when I see someone comment on a post “unnecessarily” or by feeling weird about commenting or even by staying in the tags to comment.
Literally that whole talking in the tags thing is a byproduct of that culture.
Obviously this is tumblr-centric but like, come on, I would imagine that viewpoint would stay with someone and they would avoid commenting on other places (like FF.net or AO3) as a result. We’re all afraid of somehow committing a faux pas because tumblr is… well, it’s unforgiving.
This is just a thought, to be honest. I don’t have a solution except that I think it’s a good idea to ignore that toxic opinion of Commenting on Posts is Bad and You Should Feel Bad. Just ignore it.
I’m here to tell you that it’s okay to reblog and comment on fics. The content creators would be really happy if you did. They won’t yell at you. They’ll be so happy you did. I promise.

Here’s mine! https://the-magic-typewriter.tumblr.com/post/613049915631976448/tooting-my-own-horn
@caroaimezoe @hummerhouse @tmnt-universal-fanfic-comp @affatmntfan
Toot Your Own Horn!
For the fifth year in a row, TMNT Discourse opens up our comment section on DeviantArt so that you can Toot Your Own Horn! This year there are two fanfiction award competitions. We do not have dates for the TMNT Universal Fanfiction Competition yet, but as soon as we do, we’ll let you know.
The second competition is the resurrected Adult Fanfiction Awards! The Nomination window for the AFFA opens Friday, March 20th. See the launch post here AFFA This is the time of year where you get the chance to recognize your favorite fandom writers/creators/artists. The starting point for that is of course the nominating process. You may think “Oh that’s easy! I’ve read so many great stories and seen such great art that I can nominate a lot of things.” But then when you’re faced with the nomination ballot, you freeze like a deer in headlights. Why? Because you can’t remember all you’ve consumed over the past year. You can’t remember which of your favorite writers created a certain story, or which artist drew that comic you enjoyed. That’s the purpose of “Toot Your Own Horn”. Yes, we want fandom creators to self-promote. You should, you deserve the recognition for your hard work. There is nothing wrong with saying “Hey, I was here. I left my mark.” But that isn’t the only reason to make a list of your work. It helps those of us who are filling out our nomination ballots to remember the things we’ve consumed over the past year. It helps us to find the things we’ve loved. By listing your eligible works, we’ll know what can be nominated. Too often the awards administrators have to ‘void’ a nomination form because it included something that wasn’t eligible. It also helps us to make nominations in categories we might not be familiar with. Separating your works into categories for us helps us to make the proper selections, for example - does the story belong in the General Category or is it a Mature Category type of work? Please take a few minutes and make a list for us of your qualifying works for the past year. Works that qualify must have been started or updated in 2019. They don’t have to be completed works, so long as some part of it was posted in 2019. In addition, works that placed either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in any prior year competition do not qualify. If the work won a contest or competition on DA but not one of the fandom wide comps, then it still qualifies.
If you have a Tumblr account you can post your list there as well, just use the tag ‘tmnttoothorn19’ so that people can find you. PLEASE list all of your eligible works, not just the Mature works. The Toot Your Own Horn will cover both competitions and you wouldn’t want anything to be left out - you worked hard on those creations!

Tooting My Own Horn!
This is my entry for this year’s Toot Your Own Horn! Though the event is dateless as of now, this applies to the @tmnt-universal-fanfic-comp (UFFC), as well as the @affatmntfan (AFFA). Fics are separated according to their rating with erotica equating to explicit. Some of these are eligible for the UFFC while others are not, the same goes for the AFFA.
All of my fics can be found here: https://archiveofourown.org/users/PrincessGemma12/works
You can contact me on Fanfiction.net, Discord: PrincessGemma12#1461, or here on Tumblr.
General
Unless stated otherwise, these are not eligible for the AFFA.
Before the Storm - Genderbender/Slice of life, minor Leorai but no shipping focus.
Teen
These may be accepted into either the General Ballot or Mature Ballot of UFFC or the Mature Ballot of AFFA, if eligible.
Blood and Salt - Angst/Coming of age, OC-backstory with some blood and non-descriptive gun violence and some other minor-ish warnings. Not eligible for AFFA.
Lovey Dovey (Pt. 1) - Romance/Humor, RLR. High teen with implied/referenced sexual situations but nothing graphic.
Late Nights - Humor/Romance, DLD. Implied/referenced sexual situations and flirting/minor seduction. Moderate to high teen rating.
Mature
Unless stated otherwise, all are eligible for the AFFA.
In the Woods - Genderbender/Romance/coming of age, Apritello and RLR centered but some other minor pairings also.
Through the Looking Glass - Self-acceptance story with some angst and romance, unspecified male character/Leo. Kink.
Lovey Dovey (Pt. 2) - Romance/Humor, RLR. AU-verse.
Deep Blue, Need You Eyes - Romance/minor-Erotica/Humor, Casey/Leo. Sexual situations.
Sharp Tooth - Romance/Hurt/Comfort, OT4 and RLR.
Erotica
Some of these may not be eligible for the AFFA—such cases will be labeled appropriately. Not all of these are specifically erotica stories—but all feature sexual content at some point or another.
Laser Tagging *On Hiatus* - Erotica/Kink/Dub-con/Humor, RLR with minor relationships in the background. May be more fitting for the AFFA Mature Ballot.
Fic Ideas (TMNT Edition) - Shorts playing with story ideas, some feature sex and others don’t. This entry focuses on chapters two and three (Dada Raph and Angel) which are both RLR, humor/erotica. This may or may not be eligible for either competition.
Apprehension - Foot!Raph/Drama/Humor/Romance/Dark/Erotica, RLR with plenty of other pairings. May or may not be eligible for AFFA.

Can I give completely unsolicited advice to fantasy writers that I wish someone had given me when I was into fantasy writing? The cliche “write what you know” is bad advice if taken literally, it’s how we get books about depressed middle-aged creative writing professors who contemplate having an affair. But generally speaking it can be helpful. Tolkien wrote a medieval fantasy because he was the world’s foremost expert on medieval English literature. His book about Beowulf is still considered academically significant. He gave every race detailed languages because he was also a linguist. He wrote about giant battles because he was traumatized by his time in World War I and wrote during World War II. You don’t have to do any of this because that isn’t you. You are allowed to write a whole fantasy epic without a single battle (or you can make battle scenes modern urban melees because clashes of great armies aren’t a thing anymore.) If, say, you’re really into fashion, feel free to describe in painstaking detail every outfit that elves wear for all possible occasions. I promise you it’s no weirder than describing the dialects of tree people. What I’m saying is, you’re not Tolkien and that’s a very good thing because your voice is needed more. Let your freak flag fly and make the world that comes from you specifically.

Writing with Color: Description Guide - Words for Skin Tone
We discussed the issues describing People of Color by means of food in Part I of this guide, which brought rise to even more questions, mostly along the lines of “So, if food’s not an option, what can I use?” Well, I was just getting to that!
This final portion focuses on describing skin tone, with photo and passage examples provided throughout. I hope to cover everything from the use of straight-forward description to the more creatively-inclined, keeping in mind the questions we’ve received on this topic.
So let’s get to it.
S T A N D A R D D E S C R I P T I O N
B a s i c C o l o r s
Pictured above: Black, Brown, Beige, White, Pink.
“She had brown skin.”
This is a perfectly fine description that, while not providing the most detail, works well and will never become cliché.
Describing characters’ skin as simply brown or beige works on its own, though it’s not particularly telling just from the range in brown alone.
C o m p l e x C o l o r s
These are more rarely used words that actually “mean” their color. Some of these have multiple meanings, so you’ll want to look into those to determine what other associations a word might have.
Pictured above: Umber, Sepia, Ochre, Russet, Terra-cotta, Gold, Tawny, Taupe, Khaki, Fawn.
Complex colors work well alone, though often pair well with a basic color in regards to narrowing down shade/tone.
For example: Golden brown, russet brown, tawny beige…
As some of these are on the “rare” side, sliding in a definition of the word within the sentence itself may help readers who are unfamiliar with the term visualize the color without seeking a dictionary.
“He was tall and slim, his skin a russet, reddish-brown.”
Comparisons to familiar colors or visuals are also helpful:
“His skin was an ochre color, much like the mellow-brown light that bathed the forest.”
M o d i f i e r s
Modifiers, often adjectives, make partial changes to a word. The following words are descriptors in reference to skin tone.
D a r k - D e e p - R i c h - C o o l
W a r m - M e d i u m - T a n
F a i r - L i g h t - P a l e
Rich Black, Dark brown, Warm beige, Pale pink…
If you’re looking to get more specific than “brown,” modifiers narrow down shade further.
Keep in mind that these modifiers are not exactly colors.
As an already brown-skinned person, I get tan from a lot of sun and resultingly become a darker, deeper brown. I turn a pale, more yellow-brown in the winter.
While best used in combination with a color, I suppose words like “tan” “fair” and “light” do work alone; just note that tan is less likely to be taken for “naturally tan” and much more likely a tanned White person.
Calling someone “dark” as description on its own is offensive to some and also ambiguous. (See: Describing Skin as Dark)
U n d e r t o n e s
Undertones are the colors beneath the skin, seeing as skin isn’t just one even color but has more subdued tones within the dominating palette.
Mentioning the undertones within a character’s skin is an even more precise way to denote skin tone.
As shown, there’s a difference between say, brown skin with warm orange-red undertones (Kelly Rowland) and brown skin with cool, jewel undertones (Rutina Wesley).
“A dazzling smile revealed the bronze glow at her cheeks.”
“He always looked as if he’d ran a mile, a constant tinge of pink under his tawny skin.”
Standard Description Passage
“Farah’s skin, always fawn, had burned and freckled under the summer’s sun. Even at the cusp of autumn, an uneven tan clung to her skin like burrs. So unlike the smooth, red-brown ochre of her mother, which the sun had richened to a blessing.”
-From my story “Where Summer Ends” featured in Strange Little Girls
Here the state of skin also gives insight on character.
Note my use of “fawn” in regards to multiple meaning and association. While fawn is a color, it’s also a small, timid deer, which describes this very traumatized character of mine perfectly.
Though I use standard descriptions of skin tone more in my writing, at the same time I’m no stranger to creative descriptions, and do enjoy the occasional artsy detail of a character.
C R E A T I V E D E S C R I P T I O N
Whether compared to night-cast rivers or day’s first light…I actually enjoy seeing Characters of Colors dressed in artful detail.
I’ve read loads of descriptions in my day of white characters and their “smooth rose-tinged ivory skin”, while the PoC, if there, are reduced to something from a candy bowl or a Starbucks drink, so to actually read of PoC described in lavish detail can be somewhat of a treat.
Still, be mindful when you get creative with your character descriptions. Too many frills can become purple-prose-like, so do what feels right for your writing when and where. Not every character or scene warrants a creative description, either. Especially if they’re not even a secondary character.
Using a combination of color descriptions from standard to creative is probably a better method than straight creative. But again, do what’s good for your tale.
N A T U R AL S E T T I N G S - S K Y
Pictured above: Harvest Moon -Twilight, Fall/Autumn Leaves, Clay, Desert/Sahara, Sunlight - Sunrise - Sunset - Afterglow - Dawn- Day- Daybreak, Field - Prairie - Wheat, Mountain/Cliff, Beach/Sand/Straw/Hay.
Now before you run off to compare your heroine’s skin to the harvest moon or a cliff side, think about the associations to your words.
When I think cliff, I think of jagged, perilous, rough. I hear sand and picture grainy, yet smooth. Calm. mellow.
So consider your character and what you see fit to compare them to.
Also consider whose perspective you’re describing them from. Someone describing a person they revere or admire may have a more pleasant, loftier description than someone who can’t stand the person.
“Her face was like the fire-gold glow of dawn, lifting my gaze, drawing me in.”
“She had a sandy complexion, smooth and tawny.”
Even creative descriptions tend to draw help from your standard words.
F L O W E R S
Pictured above: Calla lilies, Western Coneflower, Hazel Fay, Hibiscus, Freesia, Rose
It was a bit difficult to find flowers to my liking that didn’t have a 20 character name or wasn’t called something like “chocolate silk” so these are the finalists.
You’ll definitely want to avoid purple-prose here.
Also be aware of flowers that most might’ve never heard of. Roses are easy, as most know the look and coloring(s) of this plant. But Western coneflowers? Calla lilies? Maybe not so much.
“He entered the cottage in a huff, cheeks a blushing brown like the flowers Nana planted right under my window. Hazel Fay she called them, was it?”
A S S O R T E D P L A N T S & N A T U R E
Pictured above: Cattails, Seashell, Driftwood, Pinecone, Acorn, Amber
These ones are kinda odd. Perhaps because I’ve never seen these in comparison to skin tone, With the exception of amber.
At least they’re common enough that most may have an idea what you’re talking about at the mention of “pinecone."
I suggest reading out your sentences aloud to get a better feel of how it’ll sounds.
"Auburn hair swept past pointed ears, set around a face like an acorn both in shape and shade.”
I pictured some tree-dwelling being or person from a fantasy world in this example, which makes the comparison more appropriate.
I don’t suggest using a comparison just “cuz you can” but actually being thoughtful about what you’re comparing your character to and how it applies to your character and/or setting.
W O O D
Pictured above: Mahogany, Walnut, Chestnut, Golden Oak, Ash
Wood can be an iffy description for skin tone. Not only due to several of them having “foody” terminology within their names, but again, associations.
Some people would prefer not to compare/be compared to wood at all, so get opinions, try it aloud, and make sure it’s appropriate to the character if you do use it.
“The old warlock’s skin was a deep shade of mahogany, his stare serious and firm as it held mine.”
M E T A L S
Pictured above: Platinum, Copper, Brass, Gold, Bronze
Copper skin, brass-colored skin, golden skin…
I’ve even heard variations of these used before by comparison to an object of the same properties/coloring, such as penny for copper.
These also work well with modifiers.
“The dress of fine white silks popped against the deep bronze of her skin.”
G E M S T O N E S - M I N E R A LS
Pictured above: Onyx, Obsidian, Sard, Topaz, Carnelian, Smoky Quartz, Rutile, Pyrite, Citrine, Gypsum
These are trickier to use. As with some complex colors, the writer will have to get us to understand what most of these look like.
If you use these, or any more rare description, consider if it actually “fits” the book or scene.
Even if you’re able to get us to picture what “rutile” looks like, why are you using this description as opposed to something else? Have that answer for yourself.
“His skin reminded her of the topaz ring her father wore at his finger, a gleaming stone of brown, mellow facades.”
P H Y S I C A L D E S C R I P T I ON
Physical character description can be more than skin tone.
Show us hair, eyes, noses, mouth, hands…body posture, body shape, skin texture… though not necessarily all of those nor at once.
Describing features also helps indicate race, especially if your character has some traits common within the race they are, such as afro hair to a Black character.
How comprehensive you decide to get is up to you. I wouldn’t overdo it and get specific to every mole and birthmark. Noting defining characteristics is good, though, like slightly spaced front teeth, curls that stay flopping in their face, hands freckled with sunspots…
G E N E R A L T I P S
Indicate Race Early: I suggest indicators of race be made at the earliest convenience within the writing, with more hints threaded throughout here and there.
Get Creative On Your Own: Obviously, I couldn’t cover every proper color or comparison in which has been “approved” to use for your characters’ skin color, so it’s up to you to use discretion when seeking other ways and shades to describe skin tone.
Skin Color May Not Be Enough: Describing skin tone isn’t always enough to indicate someone’s ethnicity. As timeless cases with readers equating brown to “dark white” or something, more indicators of race may be needed.
Describe White characters and PoC Alike: You should describe the race and/or skin tone of your white characters just as you do your Characters of Color. If you don’t, you risk implying that White is the default human being and PoC are the “Other”).
PSA: Don’t use “Colored.” Based on some asks we’ve received using this word, I’d like to say that unless you or your character is a racist grandmama from the 1960s, do not call People of Color “colored” please.
Not Sure Where to Start? You really can’t go wrong using basic colors for your skin descriptions. It’s actually what many people prefer and works best for most writing. Personally, I tend to describe my characters using a combo of basic colors + modifiers, with mentions of undertones at times. I do like to veer into more creative descriptions on occasion.
Want some alternatives to “skin” or “skin color”? Try: Appearance, blend, blush, cast, coloring, complexion, flush, glow, hue, overtone, palette, pigmentation, rinse, shade, sheen, spectrum, tinge, tint, tone, undertone, value, wash.

“Comparisons” UPDATE
From now until further notice, my genderbender tmnt2012 series Comparisons will be on hiatus. I HAVE NOT abandoned it, simply caught some writers block in regards to the current story. For those of you following this series, I greatly apologize, but I have a few other stories that are my top priority right now. You can find info for them on my writeblr @the-magic-typewriter, and here on my main, under the “my writing” tag.

Story:
Usually Aggressive Empathy in the Abyss verse but also sometimes other ‘verses, such as my up-coming highschool AU Forever. She hasn’t made her debut yet, however.
Where to Find my Content:
Mostly on Ao3 under PrincessGemma12 but I also have a FF.net account, WattPad, InkBunny and DeviantArt under the same name. I have another Tumblr that I won’t be linking but if you find it say “Hello.”
Abbreviations: H. = Hamato
Description:
The second generation of Teenage Ninja Turtles. She wields twin sai, as well as an odachi sword when the mood strikes, and has a black mask. Typically Raphael and Leonardo’s daughter, however, I have incarnations of her where her bearer is another OC. She’s generally sixteen when I work with her and is the unofficial leader of the kids her age (Saheth, Y’Gynumi, Gralzak, Jones Ken’ichi, Jones Kyoshi, H. Natsuko).
Parents:
H. Leonardo, H. Raphael.
Siblings:
H. Akira, H. Kaito, H. Atsuko.
Other Family:
H. Donatello, H. Michelangelo, H. Miwa (alt. Oroku Karai), Casey Jones, April O’Neil, Shinigami, Slash, Mona Lisa, Leatherhead, Renet Tilley - Uncle(s)/Aunt(s) and “Uncle(s)”/”Aunt(s)”
Tang-Shen, H. Yoshi/Master Splinter - Grandparent(s)
H. Margaret, Saheth, Y’Gynumi, Gralzak, Levena Tilley, Jones Ken’ichi, Jones Kyoshi, H. Natsuko, others - Cousin(s)/”Cousin(s)”.
Physical Description:
The spawn of mutant turtles, so… second generation mutant turtle? That’s… not a mutant? She’s about five-foot-four, with an inverted triangle shape: broad shoulders, small hips, thin (think Rise!Mikey, honestly) thighs, no butt, no bust. Rise!Mikey has greatly influenced her design, so she has his build and shell, but the 2012 TMNT color pallet. Her eyes are the same color as Raphael’s and she has a similar temperament, but moves and carries herself more like Leonardo. She has a scar on her plastron, it’s kinda an oval shape. She has wraps around her feet, same kind of belt as Raph, but also a strap across her plastron like Donnie, for her sword. She doesn’t wrap her hands or wrists but does wear a black-beaded bracelet. She paints her nails black. All of her gear is black, she is the goth-styled child.
Personality:
She has a temper almost worse than her fathers’, but she uses meditation and training to balance her emotional state like Leo does. Overall, though, she’s very chill, real relaxed, albeit over-protective of her younger siblings and friends but she’s a ninja turtle-spawned ninja turtle, so we expect that, right? While not as big of a Space Heroes fan as Leo, Diana loves sci-fi and fantasy, The Twilight Zone and Netflix’s Black Mirror being some favorites of hers. She spent a lot of time with Uncle Mikey growing up, him training her to be Dr. Prakenstine’s minion, so she’s inherited his knack for practical jokes and crazy shenanigans. She hates the taste of jasmine rice, which has Leo fuming, but loves bacon and Rice Sides. She can’t cook but makes a mean sponge cake when prompted.
Important Likes:
Fantasy and sci-fi shows, movies, books, comics, video games and graphic novels.
The Twilight Zone
Black Mirror
Fable
Iron Man
Captain Marvel
Death Note (the anime)
Knitting
Cheesecake
Plain cheese pizza (also with bacon as a topping)
Saheth
Jones Ken’ichi
Important Dislikes:
Dr. Tyler Rockwell
Cockroaches (or really any bugs)
Jasmine rice
She has a peanut allergy
Scratchy fabrics
The cold
Orange juice
Eggs done over-easy or fried
Sugar cookies (she does, but Mikey makes them with too much sugar for her and April only bakes them around the holidays)
Other OC refs:
Hamato Akira, Hamato Kaito, Hamato Atsuko; Saheth, Y’Gynumi, Gralzak; Jones Ken’ichi, Jones Kyoshi; Hamato Natsuko.

I think another problem with the mindset of kudos/comments on AO3 is part of the “stalking” culture on instagram. If you like a picture that is months old on instagram, its “insta-stalking” because you had to scroll through that person’s profile in order to find those months-old pictures. That is NOT how AO3 works. It’s not cringe or embarrassing to find a fic that was posted in 2012 and like it. It is there to read.
Same for works on AO3. Sure, maybe some of us have some old works that aren’t up to our current standards of writing. But I, personally, am never going to look at a kudos email and think “ew omg I can’t believe someone found this fic from 2016 why are they liking it”. In fact, I am entirely going to go “nice! people are still reading some of my older works too, I’m glad they enjoyed it”. It’s an archive, it is meant to be a collection of transformative works, old and new, and you are meant to find them.
In fact, if you find a work that is from five years ago and you really liked it? I bet the author would love a comment even then.
Stories are written to be read.
Show some appreciation.

And headcanons!
“I think ole [character] wore this worn lil’ hat growin’ up. ‘T was [their] mutter’s hat when she was’a growin’.”
“Aye.”
One of those fandom things that I love is when there’s new characters around and, with the unwavering confidence of an old farmer appraising cattle, fanfic authors take one good look at them, tilt their imaginary hat, and go “Aye. Praise kink, that one. Mighty case of praise kink if I ever saw one.” And everyone else just “aye.”
