The #faceyourart challenges made me see that almost every piece of #art I did this year, almost every #illustration, was done digitally. Thats been a crazy experience. A lot of the artists I follow have been posting time lapse videos of them creating their drawings and its been very inspiring and motivating to try something new. I am finally confident that I can create an entire piece of art from scratch, digitally. I believe it's changed the way I work. Its helped me see more of my flaws faster, helped me correct them faster, and has me excited to make more art. . . . Theres a lot of art that I am creating that won't be seen for a while. This is my traditional posting as I #faceyourart! During this pandemic, I put my energies toward raising some money for comic book shops through the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC, @thinkingbinc). I took to social media to determine who I'd draw in my efforts to draw traditionally and these are some of the most often requested! I did more than this, but these were the ones either auctioned off or done as commissions afterward. It was nice to have that pressure of putting something down that couldn't be undone or edited. It made me more focused and I believe except for a few exceptions, I rose to the challenge! @pengpengart had an amazing contest last month, and even though it is over, I still wanted to do one last #dtiys of one of her pieces. It made a nice triptic once everything was finished and it was a great #warmup! Check my stories to see how these looked without lines! It makes SUCH a difference in my work! . . . Do you know why #LuizaBrillante wears a #elCoqui on her chest? . . . When I realized I wanted to create my own stories, I thought about how far it could potentially reach. Could it inspire a movie? A TV show? An animated feature? Branding was something people spoke about a lot in 2012, so thankfully, this was fresh in my mind. . . . I had to figure out how to design a character that could speak to Puerto Rican representation, and be timeless like some of the characters we all know and love in pop culture. The idea of a chest emblem came to mind. I've seen a plethora of t-shirts featuring some of my favorite superheroes, so I wanted my character to have something immediately recognizable that could inspire conversation, and get people, who knew the symbol, excited to see something they don't normally get to see from pop culture. . . . This symbol on my chest is el Coqui, the representation that the natives of the island of Borinquen, commonly known as the #Taino, would draw of the native #treefrog. We in the Puerto Rican community know this symbol, and anyone who knows us well knows it well! I've met many other Boriquas because of this shirt and people who have married or have befriended Boricuas. By making this design and writing this story about this little Puerto Rican girl, my life is so much more enriched.
