That's exactly one of the reasons why I'm not willing to come back on TG again. Since that has been a topic, I am disgusted by the staff, not gonna lie. If I'd be staff and would know that a zoophilic guy would be part of the staff or forum at all - instant ban.

I’m not a huge fan of Naia either but like, come on man.

Real Otherkin and Therians VS “Kinnies” and other Misinformation

Some red flags I’ve seen when reading posts here on Tumblr have been really common. Some posts are rather suspicious. I’m not saying all of these beings are bad or fake, but there’s a higher chance for these types of beings to be kinnies and not actual otherkin. I don’t know someone elses identity and I don’t claim to either. These are just some common misrepresentations I’ve seen flying around everywhere…

1. Kinning, kins, and being a kinnie for fun. Otherkin and therian isn’t a choice. It is not a trend, a fashion style, a fetish, or any of that nonsense. Not petplay, not pet regression… oh hunny no. It’s an identity, not a hobby. It is not a coping mechanism either, same thing as having fun or escaping reality. Otherkin is reality. You might want to look into the “furry fandom” or other fandoms if you think it is for fun.

2. Choosing a kintype / theriotype. This is simply not possible. Just because you think lions are badass or raccoons are cute and quirky, doesn’t mean you get to pick it yourself and pretend to be one. It is an identity, not a choice.

3. Kintype / theriotype appearance and separate beings. There is a difference between “this is my theriotype” and “Oh this pic looks like me.” You don’t get to customize what your theriotype looks like. Sorry, but no, you aren’t a pure white wolf fox cat hybrid with four wings and neon blue eyes with magical powers named Luna. Kintype don’t have names. It is you! You can have a nickname like anyone else, but not your kintype. Your kintype is a general species, not an individual who’s separate from yourself!!

Oh goodness, I’ve gotten carried away ranting but these are some of the biggest things that bother me. There’s many more things that are misrepresentitive, like “kin is just quadrobics” or “I’m an angry animal who wants to kill every human ever” or “kin is just extreme furries” which is all false for many reasons… but that’s for another day. Let me rest before I handle those ones next.

"Conscious commitment"

Well, as I see it, monogamy is being seen as a big task way too much. You just do what you want and feel good with. Idc about polygamy in the sense that others can do it but I won't. My trust issues and paranoia (in this case it's linked to illnesses such as HIV), won't make me a polygamous one. But monogamy is no "commitment" to me. It's even more chill than polygamy to me because I don't have to worry about getting other partners or about who my partner slept with etc.

Everyone can do whatever they want. Though, putting monogamy as a commitment and letting it look like it was such a difficult thing to everyone is a far too high of an opinion.

That's just my two cents on that, though. Not every monogamous being thinks like that, probably. I just think that we should taught people that every way is absolutely alright and everyone should do whatever they want as long as it isn't harmful. And explain what each term means without a subjective evaluation.

If you want non-monogamy to be more normalized, clap your hands.

If you want monogamy to be taught as a conscious commitment rather than a default, clap your hands.

If you want jealousy and possessiveness to stop being viewed as healthy characteristics of passionate, loving relationships, and you /really/ want to show it…

If you support polyamory and you know it, clap your hands.

And here's again what people cause with ignoring what nonhuman community members try to tell them day by day. Please take it seriously and don't show that toxic positivity. "Everyone is allowed to use a term freely and the majority of the community accepted the term 'kinning' already." That isn't true and only leads to such confusion and frustration. If you're one of these "kinnies" who "kin with" stuff or such, then you're one of those destroying the nonhuman community and it's original intention. And if you have reliable statistics of the usage of both terms, please share them. But making wild assumptions is useless. You're active around your folks, ofc you'll see many ones using these terms. Because you rarely meet people on your server who actually take it seriously and are a part of the nonhuman communities.

Start listening and follow what experienced and knowledgeable nonhumans are telling you. I know it can be difficult because oh hell, we all have been these young teenies with an own head. But learning is the golden key. And that shows respect.

If you’re mostly involved in the older kin community on tumblr that mainly focuses on serious discussion of nonhuman identities, I really need you to start taking people seriously when we talk about being upset about non-kin folks using our terminology. Of course this is a massive overgeneralisation, but if you’re mostly involved with serious discussion and you’re not also involved with non-kin communities where the word ‘kin’ is used as a substitute for ‘same’ or ‘I like this’ you’re in an echo chamber and you’re not seeing what we’re seeing. It’s really easy to interpret our frustration as gatekeeping when the people you see saying ‘I kin x’ or ‘kinning’ are just uninformed nonhuman folks who just don’t know the older terminology, but this often isn’t what we’re upset about. I’ve seen self identified non-kin people say ‘oh I absolutely kin this jumper!’ to mean ‘this fits my aesthetic’. People in fandom, especially anime fandoms, say ‘I kin this character!’ to mean ‘I like this character!’ or ‘I relate to this character!’ and often don’t even know that ‘kin’ is an abbreviation of ‘otherkin’ and was coined by nonhuman communities. This is widespread among mostly younger folks on tumblr, twitter and tiktok and is too common in non-kin circles for nonhuman folks to be able to do anything about it. We’re allowed to be frustrated about this!! I no longer use the label otherkin to describe my experiences because in all of my other non-kin online circles it doesn’t automatically mean ‘I identify in some way as nonhuman’ anymore and I don’t want people to misinterpret what I’m trying to tell them. Nonhuman folks are allowed to be really frustrated about this! Because those were our community specific terms that we created and now we feel like they don’t belong to us anymore! And it feels like there’s sometimes some miscommunication when we talk about this because most of us aren’t talking about nonhuman folks using kin as a verb, we’re talking about anime fans saying they kin their favourite character because they both like pastel aesthetics or something.

Hyena Rambles

You know what I hate about being a hyena? Mostly it's the huge amount of bad stereotypes. "Evil, greedy, stinky, aggressive" etc. And those like:"A hyena therian has to love laughing!"

Ya know, let's come to the bad stereotypes first. As all animals, hyenas survived because they developed specific behaviours. They live in family groups (sometimes they also have some in their clan (that's what such a hyena family is called) which haven't been born there but they have the lowest rank), care for the sick and injured one, have an exceptionally big frontal cortex and show intelligence that even can outnumber some primates. Hyenas are not pure scavengers, they're great hunters as well. They rely on teamwork when hunting. Meat isn't their only diet, though. They also eat fruits and similar. Generally seen, they're being called "nature's police". The aggressiveness within the group happens when the hierarchy is being ignored and has to be reordered. They're strict with that to assure the survival of the clan.

Next point is the laughter. Hyenas make sounds in excitement, fear, agitation and similar that sound similar to laughing. But they're not specifically laughing like a human does. They don't find it funny when they're being attacked or when some clan member died. They're feared. They make sounds just like dogs, cats, tigers and so on. Just because they sound like laughing doesn't mean they actually laugh. That again means that a hyena therian doesn't automatically laugh around in every fucking second. We might make those sounds but we aren't those life loving laughters every goddammit time. I myself am rather a stoic person and don't laugh much. But I do make hyena sounds whenever they kick in. Not because I find something funny but yea. You know what I mean.

Stereotypes are shit and useless and they're driving me crazy. We're not the badass, we just are hugely misunderstood. The way people thought wolves would live like (having a hierarchy, caring for the injured, having the pups in a high rank etc.) is actually a spotted hyena's way.

Please do your fucking education instead of believing and firing around with stereotypes. 'Cause they're unreal and as useless as a farting party in a closed room.

“Kinning“ and what it is actually called

Beings use the word “kinning” a lot and it kind of bothers me, and a lot of other otherkin and therians. Kin isn’t something you do, it’s what you are, you can’t choose it. In my opinion, “kinning” should be dropped and you should use these terms instead, as these have been accepted more widely and make much more sense than “kinnie” and other childish, unnecessarily quirky terms. There are three other words that sound much better!

|| SYNPATH || A being that an individual can relate to, but not identify AS. The relation can be for several reasons, such as sharing characteristics with a being or a concept that resonates with you. “My synpath is a wolf” is an example.

|| KITH || ANIMAL - HEARTED || OTHER - HEARTED || A being who has a strong connection with another being, but not quite identifying as it. They may experience shifts with their kithtype. “I am wolf-hearted” is an example.

|| COPINGLINK || A being who CHOOSES to identify AS a non-human being for fun or for a coping mechanism. This can be seen as a hobby or simply liking a different identity. Note it is still different than otherkin and therians as you CHOOSE to have a copinglink. “I have a wolf copinglink” is an example.

Maybe some self-care tips for hyena kin?

I will try to. c:

-Here are some recipes in case you ever want to prepare yourself some meals or treats themed for your kintype. If you like gnawing on bones, this link mentions some good food replacements for actual bones. Rock candy is definitely a good substitute for gnawing on. (I was eating some last night and had the thought and saw it echoed in that link.)

- As per always, plushes or blankets (something soft that you can hug) are good ideas. Here’s a nice and relatively cheap (and accurate looking) hyena plush toy.

- I know spotted hyenas have communal dens. I recommend perhaps making your room, or a spot in your room, into a den-like area and populate it with things that comfort you, especially stuffed toys if you have any. Even if you can’t populate it, a den-like area to curl up in and go to when you’re stressed and need to relax is a good idea.

- Although not the most sympathetic view of hyenas, watching The Lion King might be a good thing to do when feeling down if only because it may make you feel connected to your kintype and cheer you up since most people enjoy the movie.

- There are a few documentaries about hyenas on youtube that might be worth watching. I know the silly mutual of omaha’s summer of the badger documentary makes me smile when I am feeling a bit down. If the documentaries are too grim for you, I’m sure you could find a way to clip them to just happy or amusing scenes like hyena pups playing. I think there was also a video I saw once of a hyena in a zoo or some sort of rescue facility playing in a puddle or some small body of water. it definitely made me crack a smile and might do the same for you.

- I find puzzles relaxing to do. If you ado as well, perhaps a puzzle with an image of a hyena on it might do you good.

- I know the game has some issues; but in Feral Heart you can make wolf characters. Perhaps you could tweak the model to look closer to a hyena. I can’t think of any other hyena games other than this silly one where you play as Timon running from a hyena. I mean, you could play that and let Timon get caught and eaten by the hyena.

- I don’t know of any songs that mention your kintype, but the Lion King soundtrack or any songs that make you feel connected or at home might be good to have in a playlist to listen to whenever you’re feeling a bit down.

-I don’t know of any scents that might be good for connecting to your kintype, so I just recommend anything you find relaxing and soothing.

Other than that, decorating your room with things that remind you of the savannah (be it animal prints or warm colors like gold), I cannot think of too much more right now.
