my take on this that no one asked for is that people in fandom love to say that only good, harmless, completely innocent dynamics can ever produce happiness while subversive, dangerous, darker dynamics can only ever produce angst and mutual anguish (unless they’re cleansed and ret-conned and woobified enough that people feel Safe writing them) when, in my personal experience, the most powerful and transformative love always bears a trace of danger and sacrifice. the love of your life should alter the landscape of that life in a complete and marvelous way, not to make you something you’re not, but to let you be fully and joyfully who you truly are. there’s references in buddhist literature to enlightenment being akin to a kind of annihilation; it’s painful and gut-wrenching and challenges you in every way, not to punish you, but to remind you who you’re capable of being. i think people in fandom get this confused a lot, and either always equate violence and danger with depth and nuance, or sweetness and gentleness with childishness and vanilla-ness, or they shun all darkness and complexity in favor of the safest and most harmless dynamic, when the truth is way more complex. worldliness and danger aren’t always transformative or meaningful, just as gentleness and care aren’t automatically boring. being harmed and violated isn’t love, and tenderness and care aren’t simplistic or boring, but the kind of love and passion and joy that transforms your life won’t ever be “safe” or “inoffensive.”

the only thing I ever do with my spare time is read so I have some recommendations if you are an avid shipper of wolfstar, drarry, anderperry, snowbaz, klance and the list goes on and on. so here, my gift to you, unsuspecting reader.

(these might be popular so don’t hate on me for regurgitating good reviews)

1. The Wicker King by K. Ancrum

holy smokes. this book is a masterpiece. i cried like a baby. i probably had snot all over my face. man. this story is perfect for those who love a obsessive best friend to lovers type thing. the chapters are short so the story is very immersive. its a 5/5 for me.

2. Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo

ghosts. reckless and musty boys. very gay. gotta say this novel checked off all the boxes. it took me a while to get into but once i did i was in love. this book, like all of these, deals with heavy topics in a masterful way. i don’t know just read and weep.

3. If We Were Villians by M.L. Río

huh. i have not gotten over this one. it centers more around the mystery than the queer ship but damn it’s an amazing book. i was in school just gasping at the plot twists. a great one for those searching for a dark academia, mystery, Shakespearean thing.

4. In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan

if i could read this book for the first time ever i would be completely fulfilled as a human. there’s a lot of story and plot bc it takes place over a span of multiple years. but it has a similar whimsy to Harry Potter and i could not put it down. it was incapacitating. elliot is my comfort character and that will never change. he’s a wonder and so is this book. READ IT.

anyhow. most of these resemble each other because im a creature of habit. they are incredibly satisfying reads so I urge you to at least read the blurb. peace!

Wolfstar Shopping At Tesco ( a.k.a Sirius having the time of his life because muggle shopping is so ‘cool’ and Remus being done with him and actually trying to get some shopping done 😭😭😭 )

fic idea: sirius is out of azkaban and is promised a fair trial. before he gets one he’s stuck at grimmauld place and becoming more restless by the day. remus proposes taking him out on walks as padfoot but bc padfoot is a super scary-looking dog remus suggests getting him a collar and leash. sirius tries the collar on in his human form for the giggles and torturous teasing ensues when he realizes how hot and bothered remus gets abt it. they end up freaky nasty fucking!!!!!
