Unfortunately, my suspicions have been confirmed: I am being WATCHED. I must hide this blog before my lecturers find it. (as always, personal thoughts in the tags, which can be found in the beige boxes at the bottom of every post. also, anything I've reblogged is in the tag titled "reblogged".)

Essay idea: Animated gems of the late 90′s/early 2000s that fell by the wayside; an animation curio shop in essay form discussing a few highly-regarded animated films (the first few to use a blend of traditional 2D animation and computer generated graphics). The essay will try to discuss a few of the factors that led to these films being left by the wayside, and conclude with how much can be learned from this approach to animation. (warning: essay may contain me geeking out over these films. I *really* love these films.) If we’re being picky about it and want to call it an “art movement”, I guess we could call it the Age of Experimental Technology in Animation, but I would really rather just say Late Nineties Belly Flop.
Films to consider: Treasure Planet (Disney, 2002), Road to El Dorado (Dreamworks Animation, 2001), The Iron Giant (Warner Brothers, 1999) Atlantis: The Lost Empire (Disney, 2003)

Interesting look at Treasure Planet, one of my favorite underrated traditionally animated films. Goes into the nitty gritty of the aesthetic design process and the particulars of the animation types used.
...Would probably make a pretty good first essay topic, if I can find credible sources to back this up.

could you talk more about the male disney villains being queer coded with stereotypes?

Pink hair bows.
Many male Disney villains are what we would call “camp.” Effeminate, vain, “wimpy” and portrayed as laughable and unlikable. Calling upon common negative stereotypes about gay men, these villains are characterized as villainous by embodying these tropes and traits.

Think about it: Often Thin/un-muscled figure, heavily inked and shadowed eyes (giving the impression of eyeliner and eye shadow?), stereotypically “sassy” and/or manipulative, often ends up being cowardly once on the defensive, many have comedic male sidekicks (such as Wiggins, Smee, Iago, the…snake that isn’t Kaa)

gonna have to redo all my assets, so the new mictlan is going to be built up brick by intricate brick, with architectural inspiration from Road to El Dorado but with a more vibrant otherworldy color palette that’s more similar to The Book of Life’s Land of the Remembered

Ways of Seeing
Provisional comments
1. gender- bias-Towerd advertising made for females 2. Eurocentric-oriented towards european ideals of idolatry 3. Old-fashioned terminology/ references 4. Left Bias- criticize bias ( money, ideas)
Example: Moet champagne
Publicity Notice or attention given to someone or something by the media
A publicity campaign The giving out of information about a product person or company for advertising promotional purpose
Saturated Berger says that we live in a world saturated by images There is a high density of visual messages These may only occur to us for a Moment We may forget them A new message may replace the old(layering)
Stimulate the Imagination
We are in change (as consumers)
We turn the page
We change the channel
Publicity works under conditions of
Never speak of the present
Refer to the past
Speak of the future
A person wit particular interest will be more likely to notice images relating to that interest
If we do not familiar with items in images we will not interest in images.
Question
With a neighbor, ask each other what you think John Berger means by this sentence:
We view the TOTAL SYSTEM of Images as we accept an element of climate”
We are in control (as consumers)
We pass by the image
We turn the page
We click play or ignore (update)
Continous Renewal
We have choice until ultimately- The Newspaper is thrown away
The Television or Programme series is renewed
Change meaning of adverts by materials.
Artists: Jacques Villegle-Ripping and Revealing
Publicity is justified as a competitive medium: Benefitting-
The Public- ideas of freedom of choice [Consumer]
The [INTER] national economy- ideas of Freedom of enterprise (DESIGNER)
The great Hoardings (Billboards) and Publicity Neons are the immediate signs of the free world”
BRANDS- Compete with each other but they also confirm one another.
Publicity works on our natural appetite for pleasure
Publicity creates relationships between people not objects…
Publicity promises happiness…
Happiness as judged from the outside by others…
THE HAPPINESS OF BEING ENVIED IS GLAMOROUS
Berges says YES:
He says there is a direct continuity The difference is obscured by cultural prestige There are direct references- Pastiche [imitation] or Parody (playful copy) Products are treated like sculptures

Because West Side Story is one of my legitimate all-time favorite mega-musicals. Honestly, who doesn’t just emerge from the shadows snapping rhythmically when the word “jet” is used in conversation? (Certainly I do, on the inside at least - #1 Broadway Trash)
This is an interesting look at history and context as it relates to the text in question.

Interesting video on a not-super-interesting or amazing film, which has a lot of VERY interesting ideas presented in the film about the Role of the Artist in Society (ie, Creative Genius (TM) ) . I was watching some of these videos during my downtime and this really struck a chord with me.
#even my sister thinks this way#SHE GREW UP IN THE SAME ART-CENTRIC FAMILY#granted we were all made to drink the 'creative minds just dont function the same way' kool-aide from a young age#for the most part being a visual artist has absolutely quashed any notion of this tho#like i grew up believing inherent talent was a thing#and its like#no#creativity is a thing#being good at art isn't inherent#you develop the skills over time#you're not born with them#you learn them#aptitude at learning these skills isnt the same thing as being inherently gifted#its fucking disheartening that my art blog that has a <10 readership will understand this distinction better than my sister#someone who functionally moved in the same circles as me back home#anyway#went in too deep with the tags again oops#independent research#brows held high#kyle kallgren#video

A very interesting video about Jay-Z being a pretentious lil shit. I’m pretty neutral on Jay-Z as an artist, so I’m as objective as they come, and this lyrical/video dissection of his song Picasso Baby really hit home a lot of things I find annoying about “Artists”, as well as reminded me of last term’s essay on art being seen in galleries. I come from a family steeped in pretentiousness, and I won’t pretend I don’t have my moments either, no matter how hard I try not to come off that way, so I’m very intimately familiar with the concept of trying to seem knowledgeable on a topic without actually showing any understanding of that topic. This video is a takedown of pretentiousness in music and I guess in extension the art world a little bit, and I am Here For It.
Also the rap they do at the end when they actually bring up artists and it makes sense for the song is aces. I was sat there grinning for five minutes after the fact.
