Things have not been growing great this year. I thought it was the abnormal weather or issues with the woodchips mixing in with the soil.. come to find out, we have the invasive Asian jumping worms! Unlike the European earth worm, which originally was introduced here but has become naturalized, the Asian worm is detrimental to local ecosystems. They eat the layer of top soil so fast that their castings have no nutrients. They strip the soil from nutrients and turn it into a coffee ground looking consistently. This affects the delicate soil structure and may make plants unstable and fall over. They are fairly easy to identify. They are fast and move in a s like slithering motion. Their clitellum is uniform to the body and white and extends around the whole segment. Soil They have eaten may look like coffee grounds and they leave piles of castings around, which resemble ant mounds. Have you noticed anything different about your soil or garden? My morning view while drinking my coffee! In case you were wondering, I did not get two turkeys. I got two puppies disguised as feathered friends. They need to be near me at all times like Miss Luna. They will follow my voice through the windows or come up on the porches looking and waiting and they follow me all around the yard. When they were still in the brooder in the house, they would chirp and chirp and chirp until they could see me. I once was so desperate for them to shut up, I slept on the floor in front of them... they like to be pet and purr like kittens. Oh and unlike the darn chickens, they can walk through my garden and not destroy it. Who knew I'd be obsessed with these animals. Rose is the female, a golden Narragansett and Rudy is the male, a Narragansett turkey. Rose was bigger at first and initially named rudy. I met a new friend a few weeks ago and gave her a distant reiki session. This session was different than any I have ever had, and new ideas, ways and visions flooded in. Art has always been my passion. It is a way for me to be at one with the stillness within. I have explored many, many mediums and am always learning more. I am now offering Reiki channeled and infused art. I will also include a digitally edited image that is created during the session. Colors represent chakras, energy, emotions and our moods. I've been taking a break from social media lately. I just need to be. That's the message that keeps coming in. The one that is screaming my name. Just be. What does that mean? To accept myself? I'm doing that. Appreciate the now? Check. What's it mean to just be? Be heard? Be seen? Be still? Just be. That's the message. It has sounded so simple. I thought I was just being. But still the message keeps coming, louder and louder, asking to be heard. It's like a fire that is kindling. A little gust of wind can make it ignite. Or the flames can be smothered. There is always more than one path. There's always a choice. Choose to listen or choose to ignore. But you can only ignore for so long before something makes you have to choose. This time of year is met with sadness at anniversaries of death and yet joy at the rebirth of nature. I love the return of birds, flowers budding, snow melting and the ground transitioning from brown to green. Each year at this time, I too am reborn. Now is my time to chrysalis. To go inside. To turn to liquid and to resolidified again and to be reborn into a majestic flying beauty. No one knows what is ahead. We may think we know, but are always met with surprises.
