advice from a friend in recovery
no matter what is wrong, thereâs a pretty good chance that just getting some sleep will fix it (or at least make it not as bad). itâs the biological equivalent of âturn it off and then back on againâ
take advantage of your local library. itâs got free water, bathrooms, heating, and (hopefully) air conditioning, and if youâre lucky, it might have free wifi, computers to use, tutoring, and more.
thereâs always that one bookstore or coffee shop that you love to spend time at, but can never remember just how good it is when youâre not there. put a note in your phone or on your wall. go there when youâre having a bad day. remind yourself that there are safe places in this world.
there will be people in your life who are there for you when nobody else is. reach out to them. they might not be your best friends, but they are good people, and talking to them will make you happy.
find time to meditate. as little as three minutes a day will make a tremendous difference in your stress and burnout.
make a playlist for songs that mean a lot to you, and keep it at the top of your list for a few months or years. when you need to feel something, scroll back as far as you can. think about the past, and how far youâve come, and how much further you will go.
fill your life with little things that bring you joy. listen to classical music in the morning. paint your nails sparkly pink. have a cup of herbal tea during a study break. write down the little things you can do for yourself, so when it feels like thereâs nothing left to live for, you have proof otherwise.
make art. it doesnât have to be good, and it doesnât need to mean anything. doodle something just because itâs pretty. knit a shapeless hat for your best friend. decorate an old pair of jeans with sharpies. mix paint into pretty colors. do something that makes you feel like a child again.

Daydreaming- It was my main coping mechanism for so long that I often find myself pacing and daydreaming for hours without even realizing I started >.< Hopefully I can get down to a healthier amount- after all, it does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.

STUDY TIPS: QUARANTINE EDITION *âËシďžâ§*シďž*âËシďžâ§*シďž*
Studying while in quarantine has been a bit of a change since we canât go to classes / the library etc so here are some tips / things Iâve realised:
Drink water instead of coffee. Bonus if the water is cold. It keeps you alert yet more focused than caffeine.
Donât set weekly goals. A whole week at home means your goals will be pushed aside in favour of animal crossing or netflix. Set three-day goals instead.
Have a clear sleep schedule. If youâre rolling out of bed at 12pm, youâll feel less motivated to get some studying done. Maybe wake up at 9.30, and sleep at 11. Do what works for you.
Have a plan. Know your approach to a task before you do it. Donât just mindlessly stare at your laptop or worksheet before doing something or youâll be sat there for hours.
Summarise the concept in your own words. Itâs the key concept of note-taking - you understand things more and you havenât just copied down textbook babble you donât understand. If you canât explain something in simple terms, you donât understand the concept.
Donât let the âstudyblr aestheticâ fool you. Studying doesnât have to be pretty. The notes you see on social media of pretty notes have been rewritten and organised after the initial scribble on lined paper. Let your notes be messy (as long as theyâre readable) and if you want to pretty things up later, go ahead!
Donât throw away scrap paper youâve used for working out - staple it to your book, add it to your folder - if you ever come across that problem again you have a step-by-step way of working it out.
Understand that if youâre at a zero, you wonât go to 100 in a couple of days. First, youâll need to reach 20, then from 20 to 50, and then from 50 to 80. Nobody is 100 everyday. Nobody can get to 100 overnight. Give yourself time.
Spend time relaxing. You need to have âyou timeâ every single day. Watch netflix, binge watch disney, play animal crossing, sleep for 10 hours. You need to spend some time on you, doing what you love, to make you studying effective.
Once youâre on a roll and need a way to stay on track, start writing down your studying hours. Maybe make a schedule. If you studied for 6 hours yesterday, tell yourself you need to at least 80% of that.
Donât have a zero day, try do a little bit each day, even if you feel awful and can only do 20 minutes.
Be kind to yourself. Weâre living in uncertain times. We donât know what will happen next. Take care of yourself, practise some self care, and know that even if youâre getting an hour of studying done a day, thatâs still a huge accomplishment.

HOW TO SURVIVE UNIVERSITY AS A FIRST-YEAR STUDENT
So! I am currently in my first-year at University but Iâve been studying for a couple of months now and feel as though I have enough information and experience to make this post!
MANAGE YOUR TIME
Whether itâs a timetable, to-do list, writing in your planner - you need some sort of method to manage your time and note what tasks you need to do and when. Set a specific time for each class and plan your own class schedule. Even better, study for your classes at the same time they should be held. This will create a sense of routine and make things so much easier. Find what works for you! Your perfect system wonât work great for your friends! Thereâs no shame in not being able to keep up with the schedule youâve made. If youâve tried or if it hurts you mentally or physically, then that schedule is just not the one for you. Finding a system that works for you takes time, patience, and courage. but it will be absolutely worth it. Find yourself a routine that works best for you! I know that my method doesnât work well for my peers: I make a to-do list for the week and note down the tasks I want to do for each day and do a little bit everyday but I know some people would rather do everything in two days and have the rest of the week free! Below Iâve showed how I organise my week:
BE ACTIVELY ENGAGED
In your lectures and seminars, engage!!! Ask questions, answer questions, take part in the discussions!! Itâll help you retain the content much easier and youâll enjoy learning so much more compared to just sitting there mindlessly listening. Take notes, even if you can record your lessons and/or access the lessons later. This will force you into focusing and minimise the chance of you getting distracted and zoning out. If you have any face-to-face lecture/seminars then itâs a good idea to sit in the first few rows, towards the front - again, this minimises the chance of you zoning out and increases the chance of you engaging.
ACCOMMODATE YOURSELF
Accommodate yourself, not just with comfort, but also with actual necessities that you cannot usually get in your usual classroom/library due to whatever reason. Whether it be stress balls, stim toys, motivational cards, calming music/candles. comfort items. chewing gum. As long as it helps you focus better, keep it with you. Other necessities may be water, a snack, sticky notes etc. Make sure to declutter your study space. put your phone out of reach & turn off notifications. If you have problems with this, I recommend using an app called Forest or putting your phone in another room.
FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU
I know that I will start a lecture around 9/10am. But all mine is asynchronous (narrated powerpoint or videos) and so I will sit for literally two hours just listening to the lecture trying to take notes but very quickly losing focus. Iâve now realised that I can make notes from the powerpoint slides, and then use the narrations/videos for when I want more detail or donât understand something. This saved me a lot of time, cutting down my time spent on one lecture from around 70 minutes, to 35. This gives me more time to start other content, work on my assignments, and give myself the breaks I need to work efficiently.
WORK TOWARDS YOUR CAREER
Since more and more people go to universities each year, the job market is becoming increasingly competitive for academics. It is important that you obtain skills outside of your studies â for example through societies or volunteer work. Just find something thatâs fun and doesnât feel like another burden. You might also want to become a student representative or part of a student parliament if your university has one. Your universityâs career service provides you with tips and resources for a good start into your work life. Things are competitive - find something to make you stand out. Examples of things Iâve done (not just at university) include: Senior Prefect, write and directed my own play for younger students to perform, TEFL course, taught at an Arabic school, volunteered as a youth worker, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Course Representative etc.
MAKE FRIENDS
Being at university can be lonely. You might have moved to a different place, youâre faced with new challenges, and you might find that adult life is not at all like you imagined. Having someone to talk to is important. Good thing that itâs never easier to make friends than at university. You are surrounded by people your age (and itâs actually a lot easier to not see people you donât like than it is in school.)
Fresherâs week is full of opportunities to meet new people! Check out the societies at the fresherâs fair. In the UK, there are usually societies for every niche interest you can think of. You might end up not actually going, but sometimes you still keep a friend. Another idea is to make a group chat with people in your classes - introduce yourself to the people sitting next to you. Ask them if they would like to go to lunch together, check out the library etc.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
University is not all about working 24/7 and pushing yourself. Listen to your mind and body. Itâs normal and okay to feel lost or overwhelmed. Please take care of your mental and physical well-being during this very, very weird time. Keep yourself active. Re-ignite old interests/ hobbies. Give yourself some love. A tip I always give to people is to have some sort of creative/kinaesthetic hobby - whether itâs writing, art, embroidery, making collages, journalling etc. Having some sort of fun creative outlet is just what I need when I donât want to do work but still want to be a little productive. Make sure youâre eating enough, and make sure youâre getting at least 8 hours of sleep. Take care of your body.
MISC TIPS
Make cheatsheets to revise from
See if your university offers free/discounted versions of resources like MS Word etc
Talk to your tutors. Get to know them so they know who you are.
Donât be afraid to ask you tutors for help - that is what they are there for. They LOVE students that are self-advocates for their own learning.
Give yourself breaks.
Learn your methods. Learn how to use whatever resources / software your university uses. Learn what study styles work best for you.

things to do on sundays to recharge and make the upcoming week awesome
⢠clean ya room (just do it). also, check those pinterest boards you save for âone dayâ and actually go through them and draw some inspiration, even if you just end up rearranging the books on your bookshelf or putting some flowers from your garden in a mason jar on your desk. this is your home, make it feel like it is.
⢠do your laundry (also, donât forget your bed sheets). if youâre in the mood, look at next weekâs weather forecast and think about what youâre going to wear. go through your drawers, check the back of your closet. that hat you bought some time ago and forgot about because you didnât dare to wear it? well⌠new week, new you, right?Â
⢠call a friend/family member you havenât talked to in a while, tell them you miss them. tell them you love them. remember and appreciate that they are a part of your life even if it doesnât feel like it all the time.
⢠draw, paint, journal, write or make some music. something you know you love doing but ânever find the timeâ. sunday is âfinding-the-time dayâ. if youâre not feeling creative, read a book or watch your favorite show. or watch a new show. a scary show. a funny show. laugh as loud as you want. listen to music. listen to your favorite songs, or listen to new songs. even a new genre if you dare. turn the volume all the way up. take a second to consciously feel the music. you can always get up and dance. or sing. or both.
⢠the great, but still really effective classic: take a bath or a really long shower. if you have this special face or hair mask youâre saving up for a special occasion: congrats, youâre the special occasion today. use it. also, body lotion. we all know youâre going to be running late during the week and skip it one too many times. make yourself feel like the goddess you are.Â
⢠sit in silence for a few moments. listen to your breath. listen to your heartbeat. for the love of god PLEASE listen to your thoughts for once in your life. donât make them feel like they are wrong. or bothersome. they too just want to be heard once in a while. what are they trying to tell you? what could be soothing for them? be compassionate to yourself. itâs okay. you are okay. you are okay.
⢠think about things you can be grateful for next week. even if you feel like your life sucks atm, think about the small things you take for granted in a different way. for example: ânext week, i will have access to clean water. CLEAN. WATER. 844 million people donât have that.â or ânext week, my legs will take me wherever i want to go. not everybody has two fully functioning legs, so iâm lucky in that way.â youâre allowed to feel bad about your life, but youâre also allowed to feel good about things.Â
⢠if youâve stayed home most of the week, go out. go for a walk. go swimming. go to a party or dinner with friends. even if you feel like you donât need to see the outside world, chances are youâll feel great after you do. if you feel like youâve been running around all week, maybe youâd like to stay home today. put on your ugliest sweater, comfiest leggings, and fluffiest socks and curl up under a thousand blankets. you a sloth today and itâs okay.Â
⢠eat. i mean honestly: eat THE THING. i donât care if youâre on a diet. if thereâs something youâve been craving all week that has turned you into the veiny-neck-dude meme just trying to resist it: EAT IT. you deserve it. not because you worked out or ate salads or did well in school, but just because youâre a human and you love to eat and life is short and you should be allowed to eat yummy things. itâs okay. you wonât gain 5 pounds or lose your brain cells no matter how unhealthy it is, i promise.
⢠plan plan plan yo week. it doesnât matter if you use a planner, bullet journal, the calendar on your phone or the notes app: write everything down you have going on next week. appointments. events. coffee-dates. when are you going to the gym? what are you going to eat? (meal prep if necessary) also, create reminders on your phone for everything. âi wonât forget it!â is a sweet thought, but oh honey you will. schedule reminders for every event. let your phone remind you that you need to buy toilet paper when the store is nearby. schedule daily reminders for your medications. (once youâve done this it honestly feels like you just cleaned out 38GB of your brain, you simply donât have to worry about that anymore, space for more important info, like your new favorite pun to annoy everyone with)
⢠most importantly: listen to what your mind and your body need today and next week. daily life is so full of âshould-doâs that itâs important to find a healthy balance between the âshouldâs and the âneedâs. you will be much more productive, healthy and happy that way. nobody knows you better than you do, take advantage of that and plan accordingly.
