It was unanimous that we were going to do it together. We have a platform, and I think it's a disservice if we don't use it. This was bigger than basketball. As important as this game was, there are other things going on in this world. It's just to get conversations started.

Having learned lessons the hard way in the past, this time the scientific community was ready for the fight. âFour or five years ago we werenât as well organized and people didnât realize the importance of responding quickly and strongly,â said Alison Singer, the president of the Autism Science Foundation and a member of the IAC listserv.

Theroux emphasises that 20% of southerners, black and white, below the poverty line need help. âManufacturing has been outsourced. Their jobs have been taken away, so thereâs nothing for them to do. They sit crowded together in their shack and watch a jumbly picture on a TV set. Itâs very distressing.

What Omalu achieved by calling the NFL out on failing its athletes is, of course, more than commendable. Landesmanâs film makes that stridently clear. But as the basis for drama, his approach is marred by a lack of believable characterisations that keep Concussion from what it needs to be: urgent.

The Middle East conflict and other long-running international disputes have so far proved incapable of resolution by war or traditional diplomacy. So are the parties fated always to hate each other? Or might there be another approach that could be worth trying? David Edmonds explores new ideas that psychologists are testing which could offer a way of tackling seemingly intractable disputes. These include understanding the real importance of sacred sites and how to negotiate about them, how to achieve empathy with opponents and the importance of how different sides understand historical events and how these then lastingly shape how different groups view each other. The programme also hears from those with direct experience of conflict resolution and negotiation to understand how they react to what the latest research has to say.

The pressure on Wolfe to resign increased at the weekend as the schoolâs football team, with the support of its coaches, said it would not play until he stepped down. Hundreds of students joined a protest Sunday night over what they said was neglect â and even tolerance â by the school of flagrantly racist behavior.
The University of Missouri system has about 35,000 students enrolled with an annual budget of about $2bn. The Division 1 Missouri Tigers football team plays before sold-out home stadium crowds of 76,000.

Conductor and pianist Alondra de la Parra is in a league of her own. And come next year, when she steps onto the podium as the first female chief conductor and musical director of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, one of Australia's three largest orchestras, she will live in a more rarefied spaceâone of the few females directing a major orchestra.
The appointment of the 34-year old made music history because the world of major symphony orchestras is still a heavily male dominated field. Just to give you the scope of the sizable gender gap, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Marin Alsop became the first female conductor of a major American orchestra in 2007. Less than a dozen women lead major orchestras.

It is extremely emotionally difficult to press charges in a rape case. Â The victim will have to recount the details of her assault over and over again. Sheâll be questioned on the veracity of her memory, and she risks opening herself up to public criticisms of her clothing, alcohol consumption, drug use, and prior sexual behavior. This can be traumatizing in and of itself. If the victim was raped by her boyfriend or intimate partner, she risks isolation and even danger from reporting.
