(Greetings. I’m here because I wanted to improve on my old asks and their responses, so here’s a more proper response to this question.)  So this concept is a tricky one. There’s definitely some interesting implications behind Chara and saving/loading so this will require a little bit of discussion. First off let’s take a look at the dialogue in question.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s debatable if one could refer to “the power you were fighting to stop” as a reset. As you mentioned before Chara is heavily fixated on judgement and consequences.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The power that Chara was fighting to stop could very well have been the concept of injustice in general. Or the concept of all of the monsters being hurt, their plan was to clearly do just that. However this kinda is the boring answer so I’m willing to look into the possibility of them acknowledging the reset. Now if Chara knew anything about the monster-human war it’s possible this is where they gained their potential hatred for the power of the reset. Something that is often overlooked is the very high possibility that the humans actually save scummed to win the monster-human war. I seriously find it highly unlikely that not a single human died in the war without foul play involved.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If this was the case then it’d explain a big mystery about Chara’s file. Chara’s file is File0, it’s the one we override at the beginning of the game. However, this file is empty.
Tumblr media
This seems to suggest that Chara never saved. This is backed up by the fact that it’d cause an entire paradox if Chara could save since Chara could just come back when they died with Asriel. Maybe Chara intentionally abstained from saving because of what they’ve seen happen with the power? Maybe Chara warned their family about this power.
Tumblr media
It’d certainly explain why Asgore knew about the resets (although it is worth noting that Asgore may have simply heard this from previous human children before). This would bring a whole new meaning to this line as well.
Tumblr media
Maybe the perverted sentimentality is more than just our megalomania but the fact that we’re abusing the save and load power? These are certainly all interesting points to keep in mind, even if it’s possible they aren’t true.
So, one thing that I constantly want to talk about but never see discussed is how, in Flowey's speech after a Pacifist run, where he believes he's addressing Chara, he refers to reset as 'The power you were fighting to stop. The power I wanted to use.' (Paraphrasing a bit as I don't remember the exact quote)
I've always thought this had some really fascinating implications, especially when combined with things like Chara's fixation on consequences for your actions in their No Mercy appearance, and Asgore not seeming surprised when Frisk says they've died before.
I was curious if you had any thoughts about the implication that Chara could reset, and both told people and tried to stop the ability?
According to the files and lore Chara couldn't save. I believe what Flowey was referring to is meant to be using power to manipulate others, whether it was in the context of the reset or not. It's possible that Chara had witnessed some form of save scumming on the surface but we don't really know for sure. However File 0, Chara's file has no save data until Frisk saves over it, and if Chara could save it'd cause a paradox with the plan, Chara could just keep going until they got it right, and the events of Undertale would never be able to happen. Hope this answers your question ^^

narrachara really is EVERYWHERE, huh?
So. I’ve been wondering about this flavor text for a long time:
Tumblr media
because I didn’t know what connection frogs have to mustard seeds.
Apparently “froggit” is a spice brand, so that’s probably an explanation, but also, this is what the wiki for “mustard seed” says:
“There are references to mustard seeds in India from a story of Gautama Buddha in the fifth century BC. Gautama Buddha told the story of the grieving mother (Kisa Gotami) and the mustard seed. When a mother loses her only son, she takes his body to the Buddha to find a cure. The Buddha asks her to bring a handful of mustard seeds from a family that has never lost a child, husband, parent, or friend. When the mother is unable to find such a house in her village, she realizes death is common to all, and she cannot be selfish in her grief. In Hinduism, the reference of a mustard seed is given in ancient texts called Upanishads to explain the duality of a person’s self and the relationship of self with the universe.”

So about Ralsei is a titan theory, what if only mirrors and photos can show Ralsei's true form against his will? And when it happens he just destroys it with his hidden (from Player, obviously) powers. There was broken camera after boat ride, so maybe, Ralsei broke it?
Also thanks to this fella who point it out @temporalhopr.

(Greetings. I’m here because I wanted to improve on my old asks and their responses, so here’s a more proper response to this question.) I assume you’re talking about this line from the end of Undertales demo.
Tumblr media
The first thing I’d like to point out is that the demo isn’t canon anymore, Toby stated that the kickstarter (and assumingely the things involved in it, like the demo) are no longer canon.
Tumblr media
Even if you dont take this tweet as canon (which by the way i wouldnt blame you for doing, as half of the tweet is a joke anyways) there’s still the fact that the demo is simply an outdated version of the game that shouldnt be seen as a way to measure canonical evidence. There’s multiple instances of inconsistencies and outdated concepts in the demo. For example the clear difference between the demo’s details compared to the modern games. Here’s the demo version of the ruins.
Tumblr media
And here’s the final version of the ruins.
Tumblr media
(If you want to see the full list of differences you can see them here) However despite this I’d still like to get into the noticeable differences between Chara in the demo and in the current game just to further prove my point.  SPEECH PATTERN The first thing I want to discuss is speech pattern. It’s a small difference however it is a noticeable one. In the present day game Charas speech pattern consists of ellipses, advanced vocabulary, and full words over contractions.
Tumblr media
Notice how this dialogue says “Let’s”? This is actually an example of demo Chara not lining up with modern Chara. If this were modern Chara the line would read “Let us” rather than “Let’s”.  THE ABUSE NARRATIVE Another concept that’s missing from the demo version of Chara’s character is the implied abusive backstory. The main line in support of this theory is this line of narration.
Tumblr media
I’m assuming most of you can see the implications behind this and have likely heard this theory before regardless. The reason this is important to show is because, as previously mentioned, the abuse backstory of Chara is missing in the demo. Instead of “If you’re cuter, monsters won’t hit you as hard” the dialogue reads as follows.
Tumblr media
As you can see there doesn't seem to be any concerning implications in the demo. This means that Charas backstory was likely very different in the past. The kickstarter actually backs up this concept too.
Tumblr media
As seen here Chara didn’t originally climb the mountain for the same reason they did in the demo. In the demo version Chara climbed the mountain to seek refuge from a rainstorm, however in the final game the reason is as Asriel puts it, wasn’t very happy.
Tumblr media
Flowey and some other context clues actually give us an implied reason why Chara climbed the mountain however, which was to disappear.
Tumblr media
So a MAJOR plot point and personality trait of Charas is non existent in the demo, I think you can see how this would make this non accurate. NARRACHARA Chara being the narrator is their biggest role and biggest link to their personality in Undertale, however it seems as if that Narrachara may not have existed in the demo. As previously mentioned the the faded ribbon dialogue seemed to lack the ties to Chara’s backstory, which potentially gives the idea that Chara wasn’t the narrator of the demo. This also could explain why the inclusion of Chara was originally absent in the original concept for the Asriel battle.
Tumblr media
This was an old post of Temmies from back when Undertale was in development, apparently the concept of Chara’s memories being the ones that saved Asriel from the final game wasn’t in the older concepts either. This is further discussed in this post. The reason this is relevant is because the fact that Chara’s memories are tied with ours is one of the main points behind why Narrachara exists in the first place.
TL;DR
In conclusion Chara is clearly not the same in the final game as in the demo, so the concept of the “That was fun” dialogue being canon isn’t relevant.
the demo implies that chara thinks killing is fun & we should finish the job in the full game. do you consider that non-canon?
a lot about chara has changed since the demo, including their implied abuse ("monsters will be reluctant to hit you" vs "if you're cuter monsters wont hit you as hard"). it's an outdated/early version of the game so i dont think it counts as canon.

Ralsei Is A Titan
Tumblr media
The titans are a highly speculative species in the lore of Deltarune. We have little to no info on them at the moment other than that they happen during a roaring. However if you are to do some digging you’ll learn something VERY VERY interesting about the middle titan.
How Do The Titans Work?
Before we go any further we need to examine how the titans work. According to Ralsei once the roaring begins the titans will take form from the fountains.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They will then wreak havoc across the world.
Tumblr media
From then one the Darkners will all turn to stone and the Lightners will be lost in eternal darkness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How Does Ralsei Work?
Now that we’ve seen the way the titans work we need to see the way Ralsei works. Ralsei is a special creature, neither lightner nor darkner. He has a colored portrait like a darkner,
Tumblr media
Yet he has strange qualities unlike other darkners. For example he can survive in other dark worlds when other darkners would turn to stone.
Tumblr media
He also disintegrates upon death unlike anything else we’ve seen so far.
Tumblr media
Last but not least he knows about layouts and places in the light world.
Tumblr media
Now this all is explained through something. Something that makes this theory so much more interesting. Ralsei gets these powers from the central dark fountain in the castle town.
Tumblr media
Not only is this stated by Ralsei but according to Ralsei’s manual he’s literally MADE of the dark fountain.
Tumblr media
Remind me, how exactly do the titans work??
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, they form fro the fountains, just like Ralsei. Ralsei also bears visual similarities to the middle titan. They both have horns and fur and the eyes from Ralsei’s dark world are present on the middle titans body.
Tumblr media
So this all raises suspicion on Ralsei, but there’s even more strange things that we see involving Ralsei and his connection to the titans.
Foreshadowing
Something that is seriously overlooked in the Deltarune theorizing community is all the strange foreshadowing behind Ralsei. First of all let’s take a look at this secret.
Tumblr media
This shows up when we backtrack after doing the boat ride with Ralsei, the broken camera is conveniently placed between two things that look very similar to the twin titans. This is actually reminiscent of an unused feature planned for Undertale. Toby was originally planning on foreshadowing the Flowey X fight through out the entire game. This is seen through Gyftrot and an unused sprite for waterfall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, Ralsei has tons of similarities to Flowey. Both are associated with flowers.
Tumblr media
Both teach us about our soul.
Tumblr media
Both are the first of their species that we meet.
Tumblr media
Both are interrupted using fire.
Tumblr media
Both are the princes of their respective kingdoms.
Tumblr media
Both teach us about saving.
Tumblr media
Both befriend the human.
Tumblr media
Both end the manuals of their respective games in the same fashion
Tumblr media
And both know more than they’re letting on. However on the topic of foreshadowing Ralsei becoming a warped boss creature like Flowey, there’s even more to discuss. Notice how Ralsei recruits every darkner we meet from their own dark worlds?
Tumblr media
This entire process is eerily similar to what Flowey did in order to absorb everyones souls.
Tumblr media
Not to mention that Asriel absorbs everyones souls by covering them in light, and the roaring covers everyone in darkness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The real question though is if Ralsei is a titan, why did he warn us about the roaring? There’s one of two possibilities. He either wanted to wait until later on to unleash the roaring, or the second option, which is what i believe to be the true motivation, which is...
Ralsei Has Experienced A Roaring
Now hear me out, this may seem crazy at first but there’s actually a lot of evidence to back it up. First of all look at the first area of Ralsei’s dark world.
Tumblr media
It’s a barren wasteland full of eyes, dust, and what almost seems to be blood. This matches up with what the titans look like and what the roaring itself looks like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What’s even more interesting about this though is that the light world before this area lines up with the description of the roaring that the lightners will face.
Tumblr media
The supply closet is a completely dark area with almost nothing inside, it behaves differently than the other dark fountains as well, and of course, it fits the description of a lightner roaring.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So with all this in mind we can conclude that Ralsei has experienced a roaring, that’s why Ralsei becomes so emotional when its brought up, and why he knows about how it works in the first place. But how come he’s emotional if he’s a titan, meaning it’s his fault that everything was destroyed? Well I believe that he can’t control becoming a titan. It’s almost like a werewolf, when the three fountains are open Ralsei uncontrollably becomes a terrifying monster that destroys everything in its path. This also explains why Ralsei has no subjects, he killed them all.
Tumblr media
Ralsei hiding his face also makes a lot more sense now, why would he want to potentially reveal himself to someone who may notice that he’s the one who destroyed the dark world? This also explains why he’s so bad at making friends, he’d definitely feel like a failure and a terrible friend after what he did. Something even more interesting about this though is that it further aligns with the Flowey parallels. When Flowey becomes Asriel again he feels horrible for what he’s done, he wants to make it up to everyone, to fix what he started. Ralsei is doing the same thing, he wants to seal all the fountains so he can never hurt his friends again, he wants to disappear forever to ensure everyone else's safety. Guess who else wanted to do that?
Tumblr media
What’s interesting about Flowey too is that his arc in Undertale never truly ended. He got over his idolization but he just went on to do the same thing again but with Frisk instead of Chara.
Tumblr media
So what does this mean? It means that Ralseis arc will be a continuation of Asriels from Undertale.
Tumblr media
I mean, hey, Toby DID say there would be some connections between the two universes.
TL;DR
In conclusion Ralsei is a titan because of his physical resemblance, foreshadowing of being a titan, similarities to Floweys backstory, and the fact that he’s experienced a roaring before.

Why Kris, Frisk, and Chara Are Enby And Why It’s Important To Recognize Them As Such
There’s been a massive debate on KFC’s gender for a while now, and since there’s so much mis-information I feel as if I’m obligated to provide all the evidence in favor of KFC being enby, simply to help trans rep and smash the idea of their genders being “up for interpretation”, so here goes nothing.
KFC Is Referred To With Exclusively  They/Them Pronouns
FRISK
While Frisk has the least examples of having their pronouns stated due to the fact that they’re usually referred to in second person however it does happen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHARA When reading this keep in mind that Chara was close to their family and the monsters, meaning they had to have known their pronouns, especially Asriel seeing as Asriel and Chara are described as inseparable and being liked siblings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways let’s get to the pronoun usage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
KRIS While Kris is the most common out of the 3 humans to be misgendered as a guy nothing in game suggests that they are one. The people who state Kris’s pronouns are people who are close to Kris, just like with Chara.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And before you say that Ralsei wouldn’t know Kris’s pronouns, well Ralsei knows Kris and Susies names without either one of them telling him. He knows more than he lets on, and pronouns are hand in hand with names, something he already knew.  (Also I couldn’t have gotten EVERY example of they/them being used for these characters so if you want to see what I missed then watch this video).
youtube
KFC Aren’t Self-Inserts Or Ambiguous In Any Way
FRISK
In the case of Frisk not only are they shown to have their own personality  but they’re also directly stated to not be a self insert. The entire plot twist on the true pacifist route was that Frisk was Frisk, not us, if their use of they/them had to do with player interpretation then their pronouns would change once their name is revealed, as not only is it hand in hand with your name but it would help further demonstrate their true personality, however their pronouns dont change. Everyone still uses they/them for Frisk.
Tumblr media
CHARA As far as Chara goes they shouldn’t even be able to be considered a self insert in any way, as they’re their own character, and are directly stated as such. There’s not really much to say here, as it should be self explanatory.
Tumblr media
Before you bring up the “Toby said we should name Chara our own name” then I suggest you view the tweet without being taken out of context.
Tumblr media
“Anything else” is obviously referring to the true name, aka Chara. KRIS
Kris is probably the most direct example of being the opposite of a self insert. Kris literally rips out our soul to escape from us.
Tumblr media
They’re also stated as not acting like themself since we took control of them.
Tumblr media
Our heart is heavily implied to not belong to them as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s also worth noting that in the case of all 3 humans they are enby-coded in the sense that they’re all androgynous and use they/them. Characters like Frisk symbolically represent non binary identities as well though. They wear blue clothes with pink stripes, aka the two binary gender colors.
Tumblr media
People like to say that they would all have to say “im x and im x gender”, but the truth is that’s not how video games work. We don’t assume Sans is a girl despite him being masc and using he/him. You portray gender in video games through pronouns and physical features because that’s the only way to do so in a medium like video games. So with this in mind it further proves the idea of KFC being enby. Not to mention that if the player was supposed to choose the genders of the three humans then we would be able to do so in the naming screen/goner maker.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other Characters Are Enby In The Undertale Series
Something that’s overlooked but very important in this discussion is that there are multiple other instances of enby characters in Undertale and Deltarune. For example, Napstablook uses they/them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Monster Kid also goes by they/them.
Tumblr media
In the case of Deltarune Seam is also non-binary. Both games also have cases of regular npcs/enemies using they/them, like the ice wolf.
Tumblr media
How Does Toby Feel About All Of This?
While at first it may not seem like Toby has commented on these discussions this is actually the opposite of the truth. Toby has discussed his views on the topic. The most obvious case of this is an interview question and his response to it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toby skipped the question because of not only how baffling the question was worded but because his enby characters aren’t ambiguous. If they were he would’ve had no problem responding to the interviewer (who was assuming the characters were ambiguous)  stating that their genders are up for interpretation. He didn’t though, and I think the reason why is pretty clear. Additionally he directly states pronouns of enby characters multiple times. An example of this can be seen in this old post of Tobys, he states Frisk is androgynous here.
Tumblr media
This isn’t exclusive to Frisk however, Toby has also stated Chara’s pronouns. This happened when he was discussing the reason they aren’t included in any of the merch.
Tumblr media
Or when discussing Undertale’s plot in an old interview.
Tumblr media
Even Temmie uses they/them for Chara as well.
Tumblr media
Toby has stated Kris’s pronouns before as well.
Tumblr media
Toby isn’t afraid of correcting others on pronoun usage of his characters either. Just take a look at some of the misgendering on streams and how Toby responds.
Tumblr media
youtube
This rule even applies to Toby himself, as he has corrected himself on accidental misgendering of his own enby characters. This is seen through a time when a fan pointed out the pronoun usage of Napstablook and Monster Kid in the Undertale Artbook, Toby immediately responded and changed the pronoun usage for both characters in the following version.
Tumblr media
Why Does This All Matter?
You may not see this as a big deal but the truth is that it is. Non binary people barely have any rep as it is, and having said rep being erased by a majority of the fandom is a big deal. Not only is misgendering KFC giving a ton of trans individuals dysphoria but most of the arguments in favor of gender-ambiguous KFC are rooted in transphobic beliefs, such as they/them being a “placeholder” pronoun.
TL;DR
In conclusion KFC are enby because of their pronoun usage, the fact that they aren’t self inserts, the inclusion of other enby characters, and Toby’s opinions on this topic.

The official pronounciation of Chara’s name.
Unlike what the Undertale wiki says, the name “Chara” does actually have an official way to be pronounced.
Given that the name of the first fallen human is only ever seen written down, there has been a long standing debate in the early days of the fandom regarding how the name “Chara” was intended to be spelled.
While this seems like something unsolvable at first, the game files and especially the official japanese version of Undertale from 2017 actually provide us with an answer to this question.

I don’t think Chara is 8. I think I mentioned it in my post but Chara is specified as being a small child.
Tumblr media
Frisk however is never stated to be small, which leads me to believe that Frisk is just younger while Chara is older (somewhere around 12) but is just small for their age. Chara’s also more mature than Frisk in instances of their speech pattern or the books they read, and Frisk just has more childlike qualities in general, like being timid.
Tumblr media
What Is Frisks Age?
Frisks age is a widely debated topic in the Undertale community. It’s never really specifically stated so it can be hard to get definitive info on it. However I believe I’ve found a proper conclusion to this debate.
Frisks Physical Features
One thing that can help us define Frisks age is there physical features. They are a short person who’s somewhat chubby.
Tumblr media
These things are characteristics of a young child. Their canon height is very short as well, being even shorter than Sans.
Tumblr media
All of Frisks canon artwork/concept art also depicts them being incredibly short.
Tumblr media
They’re even shown to be as small as Papyrus’ boots.
Tumblr media
This also seems to imply a decently young age based off of height and physical appearance alone. However we also have to take some other factors into account, such as their characteristics.
Frisks Characteristics
While height and physical appearance added to our proof there’s still their characteristics that need to be discussed. Frisk is constantly referred to in a childlike manner. Chara sings them a nursery rhyme,
Tumblr media
which would be strange if they weren’t decently young. Chara also calls them cute (No this isn’t a ship post, shoo charisk shippers).
Tumblr media
But not only does Chara refer to them as if they were a young child but the other characters do as well. Characters constantly call them “child” or “kid”.
Tumblr media
Undyne even says that she isn’t “Frisks kindergarten teacher”.
Tumblr media
With all this in mind I think it’s safe to say that Frisk is a young child somewhere between 6-8 years old.
TL;DR
In conclusion Frisk is likely somewhere between 6-8 years old based off of their physical appearance and childlike characteristics.

Undertale’s Secret Power
What if I told you there was a secret power in Undertale? One that, despite being scattered through out the game, is not known by almost anyone. Well I’m here today to tell you this secret power, the power of... “a power that I don’t think has a word but is actually really cool please trust me on this”.
How Does This Power Work?
Now you may be wondering how this power even works or what it is. It’s essentially an ability that is fueled by the emotions of others, and is able to make the user incredibly strong. This is akin to praying from Mother 2 (a game Undertale was heavily inspired by).
Tumblr media
Now this may seem far fetched and incoherent however there’s multiple sound examples of this power being used. Such as...
Undyne
Undyne is the most blatant example of this power being used. She even states it herself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Undyne is literally using the power of “everyone in the world...” to defeat you. Their hopes, their dreams, that’s how she manages to fight on. She shouldn’t even be able to survive at this point since she’s literally dead. While you may argue this is just determination, this just isn’t the case, as Undyne actually tries to turn into The Undying on a neutral route but fails.
Tumblr media
The reason she fails to transform is because she doesn’t have this secret power working alongside her to fight us. Undyne isn’t even that strong in her undying form, the game files show us that she only has 12 ATK and 5 DEF. The reason her ATK and DEF appear as 99 in the fight however is because that’s the ATK and DEF from the secret power, with Undyne’s being little to nothing.
Tumblr media
Chara
This one is definitely more subtle than with Undyne but the game seems to suggest that Chara uses this power to their advantage as well. You may be asking when Chara uses this power, well it was actually in the context of the ERASE.
Tumblr media
It’s been theorized for ages how the power of the ERASE works but it actually seems as if the power of “everyone’s hearts beating as one” is how Chara is able to do this. The evidence behind this is that when we encounter Chara there’s two separate audio files we hear, mus_zzz_c, and mus_f_wind1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
mus_zzz_c (or alternatively, “The Fallen Child”) plays when we first encounter Chara, it’s accompanied by two sound effects, footsteps and a heartbeat. Does that sound familiar?
Tumblr media
mus_f_wind1 also contributes to this idea, a slowed down version of it plays when we sell our soul to Chara. As the name suggests, the audio is of wind howling. Does that ring a bell?
Tumblr media
Both of these audios that play when we meet Chara are a reference to The Undying fight. Which explains why Chara is able to erase the world in the first place, they’re using the power of everyone wanting to stop us to do just that, end our megalomaniacal spree. This makes even more sense considering they constantly comment on judgement, morality, and how we treated others.
Tumblr media
Frisk
Frisk is yet another example of a user of this power. The times we see Frisk use this power are in the context of the Asriel battle. For example Frisk is able to cheat death (like The Undying, another user of this power).
Tumblr media
The reason Frisk is able to do this is because everybody is standing behind them, they’re rooting for them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is why Frisk is able to refuse, the power of everyone’s hearts beating as one, everyone having the same goal of helping them, that’s why they can’t lose. They’re even able to use the power of their friends to help themself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Asriel
Keeping up with the theme of the Asriel Dreemurr fight here’s our final user of this secret power, Asriel. Asriel may actually use this power alongside the 7 souls in his fight.
Tumblr media
Our friends are inside Asriels soul, they’re resonating within him.
Tumblr media
I don’t think it’s impossible for him to be utilizing this power alongside the 7 souls, as it seems as if he could be potentially controlling the lost souls in a sense. He has done the same thing with the human souls in the Flowey X fight after all. This would also explain why he uses certain attacks that don’t belong to him such as Toriels.
Tumblr media
TL;DR
In conclusion the secret power of Undertale is the power of “everyones hearts beating as one” and it is seen being used in multiple cases such as Undyne, Chara, Frisk, and Asriel.

Evidence for Undertale player theory.
People are often confused when the player is brought up in discussion in Undertale, wondering what ground is there to support it being a canon part of the story as a third entity.
In most video games, the player is only here to experience the content or the story that the game presents. They are not an actual part of the plot itself.
There are exceptions however, where the player is recognised as an in game entity by the lore. The fact that there is someone playing the game has a direct impact on the story of said game. The player thus becomes a character within the game that they are playing.
In games where the player is canon, it is usually said pretty explicitly such as in One Shot or OFF.
In Undertale however, the player’s existence as an in game entity is not made as obvious.
What is difficult when it comes to gathering evidence for the player is that it can be difficult to distinguish what is actual evidence of the player’s existence and what is a simple fourth wall break either as a joke or as a tutorial sequence.
For examples, this :
Tumblr media
is NOT necessarily evidence of the player, plenty of games have characters refering to pressing buttons and it does not show that the player is intended to be canon. Most of the time, it is merely here as an indication of what to do for convenience and is not meant to be taken seriously in universe.
Tumblr media
The ability to SAVE/LOAD existing isn’t evidence of it either, those traditional game mechanics are integrated within Undertale as actual parts of the lore and can exist independently from the player.
So what is it that actually does hint at the player being canon then ?
The first needed step for there to be a player within the story is for the game to recognise itself as such : Either as a video game or at least as a world that can be interacted with through a video game.
For there to be a player, there needs to be a game to be played.
Firstly, Undertale refers to itself as a video game on a few occasions.
Tumblr media
This video game is intended to be Undertale itself.
Tumblr media
This is fairly obvious. Mettaton only appears once we make it to Hotland in Undertale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MTT here is actually paraphrasing the Undertale release trailer.
Tumblr media
“Attractive robots” obviously refering to Mettaton himself.
Tumblr media
This is indeed the case in Undertale.
Tumblr media
Once the video game turns out be an explosive, MTT makes the following comment :
Tumblr media
The mention of the cliche that video games are usually violent is a direct reference to the main slogan of Undertale, which searches to contradict that statement :
Tumblr media
Checking the video game again even adds the following dialogue :
Tumblr media
The fact that MTT says “AH, YOU UNDERSTAND.” means that we have just followed the advice that he gives right afterwards : That in the game he just presented, we should check everything twice.
This is indeed exactly what we just did by checking the video game twice… In Undertale. Once again showcasing that Undertale is the game MTT is talking about in this scene.
And of course…
compare this :
Tumblr media
to this :
Tumblr media
Even the single red pixel in the title is a match for the red heart within the “R”.
Please note however that this sprite came to be two whole years before the release of the game on consoles, it shows what Toby had imagined a physical copy of Undertale would have looked like back then
By avoiding all of the credits, we can access a secret room in Snowdin.
Tumblr media
In this room, it is confirmed that this exact same game Mettaton presented us was created by the annoying dog. Toby Fox’s in game avatar.
The in game version of Toby Fox having created the in game version on Undertale is a clear parallel to make to their real world equivalents.
It seems pretty obvious that this video game was intended to be Undertale.
Talking about the annoying dog being Toby Fox’s in game avatar, this same dog also addresses directly the existence of hard mode, and as such that we interact with the world of Undertale via a video game.
Toby Fox of all people of course, would be fully aware of this fact.
Tumblr media
At the end of the genocide route, Chara destroys the world.
Tumblr media
However, this is not how Toby Fox had originally intended  for the genocide route to end.
Toby’s original idea for the ending of the route was for the game to automatically uninstall itself following Chara’s destruction of the world.
In fact, we can still find the code that Toby wrote to get the game to uninstall itself within the game files.
Tumblr media
What this bit of code shows is that the erasure of “The world” of Undertale, corresponds to the erasure of “Undertale” the video game program on our computer, and therefore, that the video game we play is at least recognised as existing by the world of Undertale.
This bit of code ended up unused as Toby failed to make it work and is therefore no longer canon. However, the fact that this was Toby Fox’s original plan does show that this is what his intention was when he first made the game.
Besides, the narrator outright refers to reaching for a SAVE file as “SAVING the game”. It is difficult to get much more explicit than this.
Tumblr media
But alright, plenty of video games have this type of self awareness without considering the player as a part of its story.
Undertale recognising the existence of the video game we play on our device doesn’t prove the player to be part of the story yet.
There are multiple times in Undertale where the player’s existence within the story is hinted at by in game characters.
Lets start out by the smaller hints and move progressively towards the real pieces of concrete evidence.
One of the answers when MTT asks us who Dr Alphys has a crush on is very strange…
Tumblr media
When we select the “Don’t know” option, Mettaton explains to us that Alphys believes there exists an entity out there, one that she cannot see, but that can see everything playing out.
Tumblr media
This would seem to be a reference to the player, the one that exists outside of this world but can interact with it and observe it.
For more evidence of this, once Alphys tries to justify herself about her belief, MTT then decides to give this “theoritical person” a chance to prove its existence by giving them a sign.
Tumblr media
What follows afterwards is a break of a few seconds.
Tumblr media
The only one who can do anything during these few seconds is indeed the player, by moving the red soul around. The player can give Mettaton the sign he asked for.
But since all he sees from his perspective is Frisk’s soul moving around, he cannot catch on that this sign was indeed from the entity he just refered to and assumes it was just Frisk.
Flowey hints at the player’s existence several times. The most straightforward of them all taking places near the ending of the genocide route.
Tumblr media
Once again we have a character insinuating that there is an entity out there watching everything taking place as he speaks.
This one however goes a step further, not only does it hint at the player, but it even hints at the existence of lets players too. Refering to the viewers who want to see the genocide ending, but merely watch other people play it instead of doing it themselves.
Flowey’s last speech at the end of pacifist shows him mentioning the existence of one last threat to the monster’s now peaceful life on the surface.
Tumblr media
He personally believes this threat to be Chara.
Tumblr media
however, the rest of his speech suggests that Flowey has actually gotten it wrong.
Here is what he has to say to the entity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The one that Flowey is talking to is the one using the power to SAVE through Frisk’s determination, not Frisk themself. In fact, Frisk is not part of this conversation at all. Flowey talks about them in third person to the entity.
Regarding Chara, depending on one’s take, they are either not awakened or stuck with Frisk, who we know isn’t here.
In all cases, Chara isn’t present to listen to Flowey either.
What Flowey’s words are fully concrete about is that Frisk is not truly the one in control of their own ability to SAVE. This outside entity is the one who can, if they want, RESET everything and do whatever they want instead of letting Frisk and the monsters live their lives.
And immediatly after his speech ends, we end up facing this screen.
Tumblr media
The option of the TRUE RESET presents itself. And just as Flowey claimed mere seconds ago, the last threat, the only one who can still RESET everything right now with the press of a button, is the player.
We are indeed after all, the one in control of (most of) Frisk’s actions and the one who can decide to use Frisk’s determination to use the SAVE/LOAD power whenever we please at any point throughout the game.
We perfectly fit the description Flowey made of the entity which no in game character does, not to mention that we, unlike Frisk or Chara, actually got to hear Flowey saying all of this.
Whilst the question of how much does Flowey knows is debatable, Toby clearly wrote this dialogue with the player in mind.
The nature of the TRUE RESET itself is evidence of the player. It is not a simple RESET, its a factory RESET of the entire game back to the state it first was (except for genocide run consequences). Its more comparable to the way RESETING a SAVE file works in any other game than Undertale.
Normal RESETS are just looping the timeline back, allowing characters to maintain déjà vu and for Frisk to remember the past TI and shake Sans’ hand before he tells them to for example.
But in a TRUE RESET, none of those things happen. The monsters have no déjà vu and even Flowey’s and Frisk’s memories are erased as well.
In particular, the fact that Frisk’s memories are erased too proves that Flowey was indeed correct during his speech, that Frisk wasn’t the one in control of the TRUE RESET but that an outside entity was.
The one who actually was being the one who has control over Frisk, their ability to SAVE and that pushed the TRUE RESET button. The player.
In Deltarune, the existence of the player within canon is made very obvious unlike its predecessor.
The existence of the player in Deltarune doesn’t prove it to be true in Undertale as well.
Tumblr media
However, there are still connections between the two worlds. For instance :
A number of tweets from Flowey were posted just before the release of Undertale, in those tweets Flowey addresses who he believes to be Chara : The outside entity.
Those tweets were presented identically to the tweets from Gaster addressed to the player for the release of Deltarune three years later.
Both times, they start off by recognising that their interlocutor has finally arrived to where they are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They then admit to having been eager for our arrival.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, at the end of the speech, they invite us to come with them and introduce us to the world of the games, with the respective games releasing as soon as the speeches end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The obvious parallels here would seem to imply that the outside entity from Undertale that Flowey keeps talking about and the player from Deltarune are the same person : The one seeing the tweets, us.
Gaster’s comment on how we have been ”looking for him” in particular is also a wink to the countless fanmade theories that have been made about the character for years by the players.
Now, lets start getting to some of the more serious evidence.
Chara, at the end of the genocide route, cannot be talking to Frisk. They are talking to the player.
There are multiple reasons for this.
The first of those reasons is that the second genocide route shows that the person Chara is talking to remembers the events of the first genocide route.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Frisk just… Doesn’t remember.
After the world is erased, Frisk’s memories are wiped out, just like after a TRUE RESET. They don’t remember having seen Toriel die before if she was killed or having met Sans already, then shaking his hand before he asks them to.
Frisk simply doesn’t know the things that Chara’s interlocutor does. The player on the other hand, absolutely does remember all of this.
Second comes the speech pattern. While the difference i am about to point out does exist in the original english version as well, this one is made incredibly explicit in the japanese version of Undertale which is why i’ll use it here for this argument.
In japanese, there are multiple different alphabets that are used in very different contexts.
Hiragana is the ‘simplest’ of them all, its the one children and foreigners tend to learn first and it is viewed as the more ‘childish’ and ‘simple’ way of speaking japanese.
Pretty much the entirety of Undertale is in hiragana (or katakana). This includes Chara. All of their lines that are either addressed to Frisk or are Chara’s own thoughts are in hiragana.
However, all of that changes at the very end of the genocide route during the final speech.
In this sequence, Chara speaks using a ton of kanji instead.
While hiragana was a simple ‘childish’ way to speak, kanji is considerably more complex and speaking using it is the signature of a highly polite, sofisticated and formal conversation in japanese culture.
Tumblr media
The way that Chara speaks to Frisk and the way they talk to their ‘partner’ at the end of genocide are not only different, but are in total contrast with each other.
While the way Chara usually speaks is pretty normal for a child, the way they talk at the end of the route is more comparable to the way one would talk to a co-worker during a highly important meeting.
It just wouldn’t make any sense for Chara to be suddenly addressing Frisk this way.
However, this formal speech makes perfect sense if we consider that they are talking not to Frisk but rather to the one controlling them. To the one who actually decides of the fate of the world, the being mentioned by Flowey.
There is one more important factor to take into account when it comes to this subject : Earthbound. The game that was the main inspiration of Undertale.
In Earthbound, Itoi made the deliberate choice not to use kanji and only use hiragana/katakana for the text, making it sound more like spoken Japanese and encouraging players to read it out loud as they played.
There are two scenes in Earthbound that make the point related to Chara above considerably more important.
Not only was the player confirmed by the developers to be canon in Earthbound, but the way they show it in the game is very particular.
At the end of the game when the player’s help is called to defeat Giygas. The name that the player chose back in the village is displayed but translated in kana.
Tumblr media
the biggest one however, is the coffee time scene.
Tumblr media
In this scene, it was confirmed by Mato that Itoi used Kanji instead of the normal alphabets in order to “pull the player out of the game and remind them that they and Ness are not the same person”.
To put it simply, the main game that Toby took inspiration from when making Undertale was confirmed to use swapping between japanese alphabets to showcase the player’s existence and even to specifically use a ton of Kanji instead of Hiragana during a scene in which it is shown that the player and the protagonist are two separate entities.
With that in mind, the fact that Chara literally does the exact same thing down to the smallest detail in Undertale appears beyond reasonable doubt to be extremely intentional on Toby Fox’s part.
Next, Chara is talking to the entity that controls Frisk’s SAVE power, and thus is free of the consequences of their actions. Flowey’s words already confirmed that this person isn’t Frisk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“We” here cannot be Chara and Frisk either as Frisk isn’t the one in control.
Tumblr media
In reapeated genocide, the one Chara is talking to is the one making the conscious decision to pursue the genocide route over and over again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How could this person be Frisk ? Not only are they not the one in control but they do not even remember from one genocide route to another.
This person is also shown to be the same one who sold the red soul to Chara back in the first genocide route. Which will be relevent shortly.
Next, lets cover the world erasure in more detail.
Tumblr media
When the world is erased. The files 0 to 9 are erased as well.
This was also the case in Toby’s original self destruct script for the genocide ending.
Tumblr media
The relevent part here is that file 0 and file 9 are included in this. The files that are controlled by Frisk are erased together with the world just like the other files such as Flowey’s.
When one merely just loses the SAVE power, the data of their file still persists. Unlike what Flowey said, no file is ever erased in a neutral route, the file cannot be accessed until we get back the power to SAVE but its data remains untouched.
Here, all the files, including those controlled by Frisk, are utterly deleted.
When the world was destroyed, so was Frisk with it.
Yet, even after this event, the person Chara was talking to is still out there and is capable of responding to Chara. How can Frisk respond to Chara if they were already erased previously ?
Tumblr media
Even after every single thing in the world of Undertale is gone and all that’s left is Chara and some howling wind. This person is still here, the only explanation would seem to be that this person chara is talking to is not part of the Undertale world.
The one behind the computer.
Chara’s dialogue always has voice bites, except during this last scene. This is relevent because the presence of voice bites is linked to Frisk.
When a character is ‘hidden’ such as Sans during his speech about LV or Undyne when we first see her meeting with Papyrus, Frisk cannot hear their voice bites.
This is the case for Chara too at the end of genocide.
Furthermore, during the conversation with Chara, we are no longer ‘in battle’. Between Flowey’s death and Chara’s appearance, we have left batlle mode. Notably, Chara’s sprite is colored.
Tumblr media
We are back in the equivalent of an overworld view.
This means that if Frisk was there, we would see their sprite facing Chara’s. Somwewhat similarly to how it was here when facing Flowey in neutral.
Tumblr media
But as we see, Frisk is absent at the end of genocide, its just Chara and their text.
Tumblr media
Frisk is nowhere to be seen.
Next up, this line.
Tumblr media
The one Chara is talking to is the one who woke them up from death.
Having a lot of determination and being close to a dead person’s remains alone isn’t enough to bring someone back from the dead. Else any monster we killed would be revived immediatly or the other fallen humans would have woken Chara up as well.
As much as the idea of both Frisk and Chara having red souls being the cause of this would be a great narrative, its not something that the game ever hints at either which would be a game design flaw if it was really meant to be the full explanation.
It would seem there is another factor at play here…
What else could have played a role in waking Chara up ?
According to Chara themself :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chara appears… When their name is called.
When does that happen ?
Well…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chara comes when the player calls their name, at the very first frame when the game begins.
“But what about Flowey ? Didn’t he call Chara’s name too ?”
Yes he did. There is also a very clever meta parallel involving Flowey here.
Tumblr media
In the previously mentioned tweets, Flowey invited “Chara” to come play with him, in the message that came right after this one, Undertale released. Thus allowing players to ‘wake up’ Chara.
Tumblr media
In his own way, Flowey did also make them wake up by calling for them.
In addition, Chara comments that their interlocutor wants to go back when the player chooses to relaunch the game and wait.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The important detail here is that Chara’s interlocutor did something that gave away that they wanted to “go back” despite this dialogue popping up after doing literally nothing but waiting in the nothingness. This is something that Chara hadn’t anticipated and was surprised by, so it wasn’t the wait itself.
The thing that made Chara say this was that we relaunched the game. By doing this, we attempted to go back to the world we led to its end by going down this path.
Tumblr media
Which is not what Chara was expecting.
Tumblr media
“But Chara calls the red soul ‘your soul’. Isn’t that soul Frisk’s ?”
Indeed.
Tumblr media
For Chara to be talking to the player, the red soul would need to be both Frisk’s soul and the player’s soul at once.
Is such a thing ever implied in the game ?
Well the answer is yes, in the game files.
One of the sprites for the red soul had a particularly odd name. It is called…
Tumblr media
“OUR” heart.
(One important thing to note is that this specific red soul sprite is used with Flowey in particular, who happens to be the character who hints at the existence of the player via words the most often.)
This soul does belong to more than just one person at the same time.
The second owner is not Chara, as they are currently asking for it, they do not already own it, this whole bargain would be pointless otherwise.
Tumblr media
So we do have a third party at play in addition to Frisk and Chara here. Who else to be the second owner of Frisk’s soul than this entity that controls Frisk’s actions, as well as their SAVE power and that exists outside the world of Undertale, behind their computer ?
We are the one Chara is talking to at the end of the route, not Frisk.
Talking about Frisk, they are the one under the player’s control, as such they are a key element to identifying the player’s influence.
There are moments in the game in which Frisk resists the player’s commands.
It is in those moments that we can see the player and Frisk acting as two separate entities from each other, thus making our influence over Frisk appear explicitly for a short while.
The first examples are those in which Frisk refuses to attack, even when the player asks them to.
The first case of this takes place in Undyne’s house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frisk is obviously strong enough to be able to do more to a tomato than just knocking it over when striking at full force. They are the same Frisk that can push around rocks half of their size.
Tumblr media
Despite the player’s command, Frisk did not have any intent to punch the tomato resulting in this extremely weak attack instead despite using their “full force”.
The same thing happens again later on in that same hangout. Except this time its made much more explicit.
Tumblr media
During the rematch against Undyne, we have the choice to make a fake attack.
However, even if we don’t select this option and choose to do a real attack against Undyne…
Tumblr media
Frisk disobeys us and still does the fake attack instead. Dealing only miniscule damage.
Why ?
Because just as Undyne says :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frisk does not want to hurt Undyne, and as such, they do not comply to our command when told to attack her at “full force” without faking it, choosing to execute a fake attack instead.
Frisk is also said to feel bad when we make them punch the dummy in Waterfall if they have a low LOVE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Considering that this happens immediatly after the punch, that this action has had so far no consequences that could have made them regret it, and that Frisk is characterised as being (mostly) good natured, it seems very unlikely that Frisk would have chosen to punch it on purpose on their own only to feel bad about it immediatly after.
One more thing to mention here is the lost souls.
Tumblr media
They do not dodge the attacks, but they take no damage. While its not impossible that this could be due to the nature of the souls and the Asriel fight itself, Frisk might be refusing to injure the lost souls here too.
But even beyond merely refusing to attack, there are more instances of Frisk refusing to do as the player commanded them.
Tumblr media
During this sequence in the true lab, Frisk walks considerably slower than in any other part of the game.
This is only the case until the curtain has been moved, once this happens, Frisk’s pace goes back to normal. It also only works one way, Frisk is slow when moving towards the curtain but not when moving away from it.
This peculiar detail takes all of its meaning once taking into account that Frisk is also characterised as someone who is easily intimidated or scared.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After seeing this shadow behind the curtain, Frisk didn’t want to go there and look behind it.
They were still forced to do so by the player but they show clear reluctance to that idea due to either fear or hesitation, hence their slower pace as they attempt to express that they do not want to do this.
Checking it wasn’t Frisk’s own intention but rather something that we made them do regardless of how they felt about it.
This control of the player over Frisk’s body through playing the game is also made incredibly explicit in the Xbox version of Undertale.
If the player disconnects their controller whilst in the true lab, this control we hold over Frisk is not only temporarily broken, but it is explicitely spelled out for the different parts of Frisk’s body that the player is no longer in control of them, only for things to go back to normal once its plugged back in.
Tumblr media
One more very important detail to note here is that one thing is missing among those parts of Frisk.
Their soul.
The soul if the culmination of one’s being, its the most important of all and yet its simply missing from this strange screen.
The reason for this detail is because the player never lost their connection to Frisk’s soul. its already partially ours.
Tumblr media
Still in the true lab, Frisk directly disobeys the player when facing Snowdrake’s mother. Twice.
Tumblr media
If we tell Frisk to laugh at her :
Tumblr media
Frisk doesn’t do it.
Same thing if we decide to tell Frisk to heckle her.
Tumblr media
Once again, Frisk ignores our command. They do not say anything of the sort.
They refuse to behave like this with Snowdrake’s mother no matter what we tell them. Frisk refuses to comply with the action we chose, on their own accord.
It couldn’t have been Frisk who had chosen to laugh or to heckle in the first place, Frisk isn’t disobeying themself.
For one last example of Frisk fighting back against the player’s control, lets’ go back to the Undyne hangout.
Frisk dislikes soda, they find it gross.
Tumblr media
And i mean, they really don’t like soda.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but something very interesting happens if we tell Frisk to pick the soda during this hangout once she proposes Frisk to choose what they want to eat.
Tumblr media
As soon as Frisk points towards the soda, Undyne immediatly picks up that they now look unhappy after doing so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frisk does not make such an expression with any of the other options, not even the “weird” ones. Obviously Frisk does not actually expect Undyne to be eating a sword or an entire fridge as a “drink”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only change that took place between before and after was that Frisk pointed towards the soda. It is the only possibility as to what could have caused this change of humor in Frisk.
But why did pointing towards it make Frisk feel so unhappy ?
The reason is quite simple, it is because, as mentioned before, Frisk finds soda “gross”. They don’t actually want to drink it.
But, if doing this had been Frisk’s own decision. They wouldn’t have been unhappy about it.
We know that Undyne specifically told Frisk to point towards what they wanted to drink, even if for some unknown reason they chose something that they hated on purpose. It would have been a choice they made on their own free will, and as such they would not have expressed that they disliked this choice the very moment they made it.
This is what free will is all about, the possiblity to make your own choices based on what you currently consider to be the best option free from any other influence.
Tumblr media
To Frisk, the soda was not their prefered option. Yet they still picked it.
Frisk, while picking this soda, did not have free will.
Something else, or rather someone else, made that choice for them.
What actually happens during this scene is that the player forces Frisk to pick this drink they dislike against their will. Because of this, Frisk manifests that they do not like this outcome by making a face expressing that they aren’t happy about this, which Undyne then notices and points out.
“But what about the narrator ? They can move Frisk’s body too, maybe they were the one who made them pick the soda and not the player.”
The narrator does not seem to be the greatest fan of soda either. That description of it is really not flattering.
Tumblr media
However, they seem to have much more interest in the golden flower tea.
Tumblr media
Even when choosing the sugar, they try and push us towards picking the tea instead.
Tumblr media
If the narrator wanted to force us to select anything in particular, it would have been the tea, not the soda.
It must not be forgotten that one of the key points that Toby Fox built Undertale round in the first place was to include traditional parts of RPG games that are not supposed to be relevant “in world” such as EXP & LV, SAVING or the narration into actual canon parts of the story. The player being included as well was nothing more than the next logical step in this direction.
The list of games Undertale was inspired by includes Earthbound, MGS or OFF, all of which recognise the player as an entity within canon. Toby Fox seems to have been following down the same path as those games regarding integrating meta elements into the story.
For instance, Toby himself mentioned in an interview from 2018 when asked about the way these games inspired him that  :
Toby Fox : “I guess as a specific example, I really liked how Metal Gear Solid had all these strange, game-breaking moments (==> interacting with the player) within the series. […] The game design can be part of the story, too.”
From his words to his inspirations passing by the game design model he’s been following and the very way he envisioned Undertale, adding the player as part of canon would only have been a logical choice.
In the end, it is better to let the games speak for themselves.
Whilst it is down to each person to come to their own conclusions, game evidence heavily suggests that the player is intended to be canon in Undertale.

There’s always been a lot of mystery surrounding Sans as a character, from his secret science room to his dialogue in the Genocide route. I have collected as much evidence as I could surrounding Sanses character to try and figure this out, and I have came to a very interesting conclusion.
Sans is a reincarnation of one of the humans who fell before Frisk did. After examining much of Sanses dialogue, as well as dialogue from many other characters throughout the game, this is the conclusion I’ve came to.
Sans gave up on something at some point in the past, that he expects Frisk to give up on as well, we see this in his lost soul dialogue during the True Pacifist ending
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now the lost souls are all what the characters were at the beginning, before you helped to change them into better people, Toriel is overly protective, Papyrus wants to capture a human for popularity, Undyne hates humanity, Alphys doubts herself and Asgore feels it is his duty to collect the final soul, so then why does Sans say this? Doesn’t this imply that from the beginning Sans felt that there’s some inevitability down your path that you are going to need to give up on that he ALSO gave up on. He says something similar in the Genocide route
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sans tries to convince you to stop resetting over and over, and what does he say? “Take it from me, kid”. The definition of “Take it from me” According to the Cambridge dictionary is “accept that what I say is true, because I know or have experienced it”. So Sans has experienced something like this before? Wouldn’t that be implying that Sans has had the ability to save, load and reset at some point in time, and at some point he quit? We know from Toriel that when she sees a human fall to the underground, it’s almost as if she had met them before
Tumblr media
Alright, so my guess with this is that: Sans fell into the ruins, but perhaps moved right through to Snowdin fairly quickly, possibly the reason he barely remembers Toriel, (that or he’s lying in his date to try to keep hiding the truth from Frisk until the moment Frisk finds his hidden room, however you want to try and explain it), but after a long journey through the underground, he reached Asgore, but couldn’t defeat him, trying again and again, loading, resetting, but in the end he gave up and his soul was taken.
How he was reincarnated would honestly just be pure speculation, perhaps linked to an experiment of Gasters or some other weird event that caused them to come back. What I can guess is that the “Don’t forget” photograph may be of Sanses possible human family, maybe Sans with a couple of friends/siblings/parents, or maybe not Sans at all and just 3 people that he knew and loved, signed “don’t forget” as a reminder of the life he had before this one. Again, this is mostly speculative and doesn’t have a large amount of evidence to back it up.
The big question is, what soul is he? Well the 2 big possibilities here are Patience and Justice. During some points in the Sans fight, his eyes flash 2 colors, a light blue (color of Patience) and a yellow (color of Justice). He is willing to wait for you to reach the judgement hall, and well he is fine to wait until the end of time at the end of the Sans fight, showing a lot of patience. He also judges you for the LOVE you gain in every route you take, and is willing to show shame and possibly even attack you for everyone you killed, showing that he does have a sense of Justice. So it could really be either, possibly neither.
TL;DR
Sans is the reincarnation of a previously fallen human who gave up trying to get home after dying to Asgore over and over again

Why Undyne doesn’t attack Frisk from the start
Undyne notices Frisk’s presence as soon as they move after either finishing her meeting with Papyrus or understanding that he won’t show up.
Tumblr media
She saw them, Frisk is right in front of her, she has the high ground and she has every opportunity to throw as many spears at the defenseless human as she wants.
Tumblr media
Even monster kid points out that Undyne was staring at Frisk, she was considering doing it.
Tumblr media
So why didn’t she ? This would be a golden opportunity to strike down the human wouldn’t it ?
The answer to this question actually comes from the phone calls after befriending Undyne, when calling her in this room, she states the following :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After confirming that she did indeed see Frisk and wanted to kill them on the spot, she explains that the reason she didn’t was because Frisk happened to be hiding in sea-grass under scientific protection.
This isn’t the only time the grass stops her either.
During the first chase scene, Undyne suddenly stops throwing spears once Frisk starts hiding in the grass.
Tumblr media
Instead, she tries to find them on foot only to give up shortly.
Tumblr media
When calling Undyne in this room, she once again calls out out the grass as the reason why she did this rather than continuing to throw spears everywhere.
Tumblr media
This seems a bit strange from Undyne, why does she care about this grass so much that getting the last human soul monsters need still wouldn’t be enough of a reason to destroy it if necessary ?
It is because Alphys is the one who needs this grass and put it under scientific protection. She needs it in order to get this machine to work and produce this pink substance.
Tumblr media
So what exactly does this grass allow Alphys to make ? What is this weird substance ?
Tumblr media
…Thank you Alphys. Good job.
Well Undyne seems to like it at least, unlike normal ice cream.

What Are Chara’s Intentions Behind The Soulless Pacifist Route?
Tumblr media
Picture this; You killed everyone, everyone who was supposed to be your friends. You showed them no mercy. Yet you think you are above consequences. You reset, hoping to yet again achieve a happy ending...but this time something changed. Chara appears, again, either with glowing red eyes in the dark, or surrounding your “friends” covered with red X’s. So what does this all mean? At first you may assume that everyone’s dead, but that’s far from the truth. Here’s why.
The Context Behind The Tainted Ending
Something that makes the meaning of this ending apparent is the context behind it. As previously mentioned this ending takes place after a murderboy route. A path which Chara shames us for taking.
Tumblr media
The soulless pacifist ending is essentially a way to constantly remind us of our sins, a way that we can never forget what we did. A nightmare we can never wake up from. How do we know everyone actually isn’t dead though? Our best friend, Flowey, can help us explain that.
Flowey And How Important He is To Proving Our Friends Are Still Alive
While at first our friends appear to be dead the game would suggest otherwise. Flowey specifically helps us see this. He claims everyone is happy on the surface, and that “Chara” can breath easy because everyone’s safe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This seems very out of place for an ending where everyone seemingly died, Flowey has no reason to directly state that everyone’s happy if they were really dead. Plus we’ve learned from the Undertale Alarm Clock Dialogue that Flowey ends up going to the surface with everyone else, this is also seen by the menu screen after the true pacifist ending, which shows that everyone left for the surface, even Flowey.
Tumblr media
So this shows us that he without a doubt has knowledge of whether or not everyone survived, and in his own words everyone’s perfectly happy.
How Does Chara Do This?
You may be wondering how Chara is able to give us these endings if it doesn’t truly involve death. I think the answer is that they’re manipulating the way the player views things. As we see a similar thing happen with Asriel in the credits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They’ve been seen to have strange powers in the past as well, such as sensing how many monsters are in an area.
Tumblr media
The Soulless Pacifist Merch
Now while merch isn’t canon a piece of merchandise based off the soulless pacifist ending still seems to be an argument for some reason, but even assuming this has any merit whatsoever it is easily debunked. The merch in reference is this.
Tumblr media
It is gained through a now gone item called the determination combo. Flowey gave you the option of a one dollar discount, and if you took it you were rewarded with the soulless pacifist end card instead of the regular one. The argument here is that since they appear scared in the picture that must mean they were in danger, although this isn’t the case, as this card is taken out of context. The back of it actually read this:
Tumblr media
Now why this is important is the part that says “this is all a bad dream and you’re never waking up”, that is Floweys dialogue from his Flowey X fight. This dialogue is very much here on purpose though, because it further proves the idea that Chara is manipulating the way we’re viewing things to haunt us with the memory of our dead friends, hence the “bad dream” dialogue.
TL;DR
In conclusion the soulless pacifist ending was a way for Chara to punish us based on the context, and the fact that Flowey confirms that our friends are alive.

Do not get me started on papyrus's "naiveness"
He has advanced shit as his favorite book. So dont start saying he's an idiot. Or his "intellegence" is low. Hes very smart and cool dude.
He knows what a lab is. Bro the "quantum physics book" could be his. He tells jokes/puns afterrall. And its neatly arranged in a nice ongoing pattern. I like it that way myself too uwu.
He knows what the sun is.
He straight up lied to us all on the surface. In the pacifist route. Everybody.
Need proof? Figure here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Btw how do you know what a highway is? I thought this war was like years ago, like a millena. Not like 2012 or something.
(Of course @argentdandelion brought up a good point. Of how he might've heard descriptions in it of all the books he reads, but never actually has seen it. But either way, this is still gonna be up for some speculation)
Tumblr media
You know what the surface is papyrus. The "human world" you are on earth papyrus. You know this. PAPYRUS. Just saying "human world".
(Of course he could also be referring to the "surface")
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SANTA BETTER BE FRIKING CELEBRATED IN SNOWDIN OR IM GOING TO KICK DOWN YOUR DOOR PAPYRUS.
HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT SANTAA???!?! You better not be covering this up..
And the "lets just say" part? Means your simplifying things. The "..." Means your evaluating it. And that worried expression of your face?
Yeah i see that expression papyrus. Your hiding something. By using flipping Santa an excuse. Why, just why.
(He already has some kind of relationship with gaster, actually its alot more closer than sans does. So its plausible that gaster just straight up gave he action figures from like.. Deltarune or somthing.)
(Or someone dressed up as Santa, went to the dump, and got him action figures. )
Tumblr media
Oh and dont say this wont say anthying about him, beacuse this is the kicker. Out of everything i had listed this is one to pay attention too.
HE HAS AN ADVANCED PUZZLE BOOK. For crying out loud.
And no, this isn't some kindergartener kinda thing
This is complex, takes a bunch of thought put into it.
(Whoever owns an advanced puzzle book, please tell me how long it takes you to finsih the whole book. Cause i just searched it up on google and this thing LOOKS LIKE A FREAKING MATH BOOK. Like i just searched up, advanced puzzle book review and this dude speaking really fast, flips throw "puzzle mania" and im blown away by how much stuff there is in there. Its like a big ol math book.)
Also this book is one of his "favorites". Just search up some reveiws for yourself on advanced stuff.
Yeah, papyrus definetly gives off the "critical minds" with the well thought out lying, planned things he does, HIDING STUFF FROM HIS OWN BROTHER, AND STRAIGHT UP LYING TO HIM TO THE POINT WHERE HE TREATS HIM LIKE A CHILD.
Oh and dont get me wrong. The "treat me like a child" is the best way to cover up thise dirty secrets papyrus. As children are associated with "innocence" so you must be free of charge? Right?
The fact you know of the "lab" says two things.
You might even know of the "true lab" the most "brutal place" of it all. The experiments on souls.
Not to mention he might be the strongest one in the underground. Stronger than say... Undyne? Whos apperently stronger than the KING of monsters? Due to her training? Perhaps.. Perhaps not.
Though, this link does imply the fact that he might've considered murdering someone. Im guessing from what we see in genocide, he doesn't go through with it.
The fact is he considered.
https://batter-sempai.tumblr.com/post/146708963368/eroshiyda-ibelieveinfairytales606
Papyrus does say if you hadn't stop he would've blasted you too... Well im guessing pieces.
(Seeing as he has alot of 4th wall breaking logic, so im guessing he literally means he blast your floating heart into peices. (As that what happens)
So papyrus would, and can murder you. He probably considered it, once or twice. He knows that capturing you, would just.. Get you killed.
Actually! He was gonna kill you in the genocide run, but you caught him off gaurd.
Its only with horrible puzzles and pasta and becoming his friend, where he tries not to have you killed. But without that, i doubt anything different besides a bit of guilt crawling down his back.
I mean all the puzzles he sets up are deadly, even claiming that kids love those stuff. Yeah, deadly puzzles..... Hopefully that's something someone told him, and not him just thinking that on a whim. Beacuse then it can be justified.
But your capable of making your own decisions.
So what do you think?
(Ps: i edited it a few times, so I might be a little different with each reblog)

Note
the demo implies that chara thinks killing is fun & we should finish the job in the full game. do you consider that non-canon?
a lot about chara has changed since the demo, including their implied abuse ("monsters will be reluctant to hit you" vs "if you're cuter monsters wont hit you as hard"). it's an outdated/early version of the game so i dont think it counts as canon.
