Chara Doesn’t Like Killing

Chara enjoying the no mercy route is a very large misconception within the fandom. There’s this idea that they want to kill everything, or at the very least like doing it. However in game evidence suggests the opposite.

Chara Gives Us Advice On Sparing Others

The idea that Chara is pushing for killing and death is simply false considering they actively help us spare monsters. For example they encourage us to find a way to spare Toriel after reseting because we previously failed to do so. 

Chara also encourages us to not be creepy and say messed up things to Toriel after we’ve killed her previously. 

Chara does actions of similar caliber with more monsters than Toriel though. For example Chara encourages us to not pick on Loox. 

Chara does this basically through out the entire game too. They actively give us advice on how to spare everyone through out the whole game.

Chara Becomes Pessimistic When We Kill

On neutral routes if we kill monsters Chara becomes so upset that they’re pessimistic. This is seen in multiple ways. The first of which being the infamous dog food line. If we spare every monster we encounter the dialogue says this:

The difference is that if you kill even one monster the dialogue changes to this:

What’s important about this is the implications behind this, half full vs half empty is a phrase, specifically referring to optimism vs pessimism. 

So what does this mean for Chara? it means they’re negatively affected by us killing monsters. This is seen in more direct ways as well. For example after killing Toriel Chara shows remorse for what we did. 

Chara also becomes emotional when we kill Undyne on a neutral run. 

The No Mercy Run

The no mercy run is a large pill to swallow with a lot to analyze, however it’s safe to say that Chara is in mental distress during this run. Regular, lively narration turns to basic and lackluster narration,

Normal save point descriptions just turn to “Determination”,

and Chara forces us through interactions.

Why are they doing this though? Because they want to get it all over with. They’ve been told it’s their purpose so they listen, but they dont enjoy doing so, and actively try and make it as quick as possible. They even snap out of it sometimes, like when they hesitate before killing their brother, Asriel. 

Chara also comments on the fact that we have a perverted sentimentality,

and that they cannot understand those feelings. 

They even feel obligated to suggest that we pick a different route. 

TL;DR

In conclusion Chara does not enjoy killing because of their narration that tries to bring us down a pacifist path, they’re pessimism when it comes to the death of others, and their distaste with the no mercy route.

Papyrus and Sans moved to Snowdin

So, for anyone who didn't know, Papyrus and Sans did not grow up in Snowdin. They moved there and its never been explained where they lived before that.

According to the bunny shopkeeper, they just showed up one day! (Similar to how Sans just shows up one day with his brother in Deltarune)

Which is why this Q&A is so neat!!!

Where did Papyrus and Sans live BEFORE Snowdin??? Somewhere with green grass, apparently. God I need more answers.

Handplates revelation

so canonicly Sans intentionally talks with "bad" Grammer in part to annoy Gaster, but as I was writing my fic I revised the they wya Gaster and Paps talk is oddly similar. What if Papyrus, desperate for approval and love tried to imitate the way gaster talked. Also what if he thought that if he talked like Gaster, that Gaster would think Papyrus was smart like him. 💔

Something to think about

undertale theory: Red Souls are unnatural, it’s the Angel’s Power. Chara may have had a Golden Soul

Please read my previous theory post on DT not being the red soul if you haven’t already. tldr; the color gold is repeatedly shown as the color for determination, in the saves, the golden flowers, the heart locket. I ended that post with a discussion on what Red could be, since it’s not determination. I had trouble because it’d have to fit both the pacifist and no-mercy endings equally.

My answer is Red = Power, Gold = Determination. Chara had a Gold Soul that turned into a Red Soul.

Ok, how did I get there? So like, here’s my Tea. SAVE points clearly come in two colors at the very least. The Red soul in UT and DR have the colors gold and white respectively. The first is Determination, the second The Angel’s Power. Why did I say the Angel’s power?

Okay, so one thought I had rattling in my head for a bit now is that the Dark Sanctuary of Deltarune Chapter 4 really reminds me of Undertale’s Waterfall.

I mean, the Dark Sanctuary doesn’t really have the water theming but… they are both the darkest parts of the game, both in a literal visual sense. With a mostly darker color-scheme and puzzles themed around darkness

and also in the narrative sense, being the most serious, solemn and grim part of the game. While Waterfall has its moments of levity and, y’know, Temmie Village, there’s a lot more focus of scenes of melancholy or fear compared to other parts of the game. While Undyne can be a very silly character, she only shows that side of herself to the Human during her Boss Fight right at the end and she’s otherwise a quiet and no-nonsense antagonist.

Deltarune Chapter 4 is the darkest chapter of Deltarune so far. It also has it's funnier moments but… The Church Dark World concept leads itself to much more serious theming and designs for the backgrounds and the enemies, it has some of the most serious exploration of our main characters' personalities and arcs, and has a lot of emphasize on the fact the stakes have been raised and Shit Just Got Real.

Plus, both Chapters deal heavily in the lore written on the walls of that area

Including a Prophecy

(well, in Deltarune it's exclusively a Prophecy, in Undertale it focuses on History and also includes a Prophecy)

And on a larger scale, both of these writings introduce the idea that the information we/the characters had before on the Lore is not the full picture.

And y'know, Gerson, who is present in both areas but also…

As the Hammer of Justice he also serves as a very heavy parallel to the Boss Fight(s) against Undyne in Undertale, both in visual design and gameplay (the Green Soul Mode).

Also, y'know, Piano Puzzles...

The thing is just… I didn't quite know what to do with this comparison. I mean, speculating on the idea the next Chapter would somehow be a Hotland Counterpart feels incredibly silly considering we already had two Dark Worlds that are very Hotland-like…

Which is when I realized, what if Deltarune Chapters correspond to Undertale areas but in reverse?

The Dark Sanctuary is like Waterfall and before it, TV World is a lot like Hotland, focused on TV-themed minigames controlled by an attention-hungry rectangular Game Show Host.

Cyber World would be the CORE, as the most high-tech themed areas in their respective games

And Queen and Spamton both including elements of Mettaton EX/NEO

Including Spamton NEO having the Yellow Soul Mode.

And Card Castle is the counterpart to New Home. Since these areas are both meant to be, well, a castle and it's surrounding area.

And King obviously being kind of a dark thematic reflection of Asgore.

…That would make Chapter 5 a Snowdin parallel to some degree, then Chapter 6 as a Ruins parallel, leaving Chapter 7 to do something totally off-the-rails and unique and unpredictable… Question is just what would that mean for Chapter 5 to be a "Snowdin Parallel"?

Since the Dark Sanctuary didn't really have water and TV World didn't really have magma-stuff, I don't think that would mean Chapter 5 would necessarily be an ice world, and indeed the only real hint we have to Chapter 5 right now is about a garden.

… It could be a somewhat more light-hearted Chapter after the huge drama-bombs we just had, since Snowdin is probably the most light-hearted and friendly part of Undertale… but there's also plenty of ways for it to be just as lore-heavy and serious and filled with revelations. Since the two things Snowdin was known for is the introduction of the Skeleton Brothers and it's Holiday Theming.

My Deltarune / Undertale conspiracy theory is that Chara fell into the Underground on December 25th, 201X.

End of 201X? Doesn't refer to the decade, it refers to the end (i.e. last month) of an unspecified year in the 2010s. The emphasis on Christmas and Winter with Dess and the Holidays? It's all going to connect babyyyyy

Long dead contractor or fake one ?

Thinking again about this guy ^ who probably isn't the Polaris Star Lord (because Polaris from ch169 doesn't have the similar neck tattoo thingy).

Crack theory from my insomnia : the thing is, we know UT checked Seb's cinematic records during the Campania arc and thus knows what contract Seb made with Ciel (i.e the 3 rules from ch138)...

...the remaining question though is whether he saw more than what we readers saw of Seb's CR.

When it comes to humans, their cinematic records start at birth and end at death. However, we don't know enough about demonology in Kuro to be sure

whether Seb's own CR only begins at his current summoning,

or if he has centuries old CR depicting his entire existence as a demon and thus all his previous contracts.

Depending on the answer, this means UT could have seen just Seb's existence since being summoned by our!Ciel, or also past contractors. Noteworthy, when Grelle briefly checked Seb's CR during the JTR arc, she too only saw moments of Seb's "life" as Ciel's butler.

So, if UT had access to Seb's memories of previous contractors, then he could have somehow found this guy and brought him back to life (somehow finding his corpse where Seb ate his soul, idek).

However, if UT didn't have access to Seb's CR before the current summoning and contract with our!Ciel, then the question remains : who is this guy from the cliffhanger and how did he end up involved ?

Considering UT's goal of separating Ciel from Seb...

...if UT had no way of finding a previous recent contractor and bringing him back to bizarre doll state, what if he faked one ? After all, he doesn't have to play fair when it comes to fighting against a demon.

Seb's contract with Ciel is based on the 3 main rules they discussed during ch138. Namely in that chapter, Seb and Ciel discussed the matter of possible betrayal and...

...while Seb said that multiple contracts were against his aesthetics, UT could have taken a corpse and altered his CR (by adding fake memories, like he did with the Campania BDs) to trick Ciel into thinking Seb broke their agreement of no multiple contracts, thus rendering the contract null.

This would explain the whole "would you like me to give you a hand ?"

And "then why did they welcome us ?"

Now, for anyone who might come at me saying "but Ciel would never believe such a thing" : I understand the feeling since Seb is indeed too stupid to betray his own aesthetics, but I beg to differ considering the Green Witch arc, the "90% serious" incident and mostly the fact that...

...Ciel doesn't trust that Seb has his best intentions in mind, far from it.

It will take convincing arguments for sure, but UT is not some ordinary villain and, again, the Nectar Springs Hotel staff was expecting them. Lastly, considering the theory that UT could be Cedric K. Ros, Frances once said in ch14...

...and I think it could apply to UT as well.

I mean, so far, the Campania, Weston and Blue Sect arcs saw UT winning every time. As for the current investigations, Mey and Bard were successful but Finny & Snake weren't, meaning that if Ciel & Seb lose, it's going to be a tie (which would keep real!Ciel longer in the story).

Maybe this arc will highlight that Seb was right in ch14 and our!Ciel can't win against UT and his brother if he doesn't add more Phantomhive brains to his side (aka Frances becoming some sort of mentor like Seb mentioned) :

TL;DR I don't know if Seb's past as a demon before the contract with Ciel could be relevant to the plot, so I wouldn't put it past UT to create a fake contractor to try and make the contract with our!Ciel null.

UT doesn't know how to mourn but he does know how to hatch conniving plans.
