the other day I saw a sign that said something along the lines of "dirty work for cheap" and it had a phone number right under it. it looked so sketchy but I figured it was advertising like jobs people might not want/be able to do themselves? idk

BUT THEN I HAD A THOUGHT (shocking lol)

I imagined a scenario where a little old lady calls the number, maybe someone in her circle gave her the number, and she calls saying she needs something "taken care of" Only for then a group of mobsters/lackeys(?) to show up at her door, crowbars in hand, and absolutely dumbfounded at the sight of this sweet old lady. She ushers them in and shows them what she needed help with, maybe building/installing furniture, and they catch on to what's going on and decide it's best to just help the old lady out.

Full offense but your writing style is for you and nobody else. Use the words you want to use; play with language, experiment, use said, use adverbs, use “unrealistic” writing patterns, slap words you don’t even know are words on the page. Language is a sandbox and you, as the author, are at liberty to shape it however you wish. Build castles. Build a hovel. Build a mountain on a mountain or make a tiny cottage on a hill. Whatever it is you want to do. Write.

I’m noticing an increase in new fic writers on AO3 who…uh…mayy not know how to format their fics correctly..so here is a quick and VERY important tip

Using a random fic of mine as example..

The left example: ✅✅✅

The right example: ❌❌❌

Idk how many times I’ve read a good fic summary and been so excited to read before clicking on it and being met with an ugly wall of text. When I see a huge text brick with zero full line breaks my eyes blur and I just siiiigh bc either I click out immediately or I grin and bear it…it’s insufferable!

If a new character speaks, you need a line break. If you notice a paragraph is becoming too large, go ahead and make a line break and/or maybe reconfigure the paragraph to flow better. I’m not a pro writer or even a huge fic writer but…please…ty…

I like writing.

I like the process of writing. I like the mechanics of writing.

I like writing down words and picking what order that they should go in to best convey the meaning and images in my mind to the person reading them. I like thinking about the way a sentence sounds and the way it interacts with the other sentences around it. I like thinking about what words should repeat, and what words should stand alone, and what words should be swapped out with other words.

I like the actual writing part of writing!
