From Sketch to App in 24 Hours!

These days, I am caught up with things so much on weekdays that I am not finding any time for working on personal projects and weekends you know! It passes by as if it didn't even come. So I've devised a new way to get my ideas to execution! That's hackathons!!

I found out that OLA Cabs is organizing a hackathon along with Venturesity and registered for it along with a friend of mine, Siddhartha. They called it as OLA Appathon.

Went there early morning by 9 AM and started putting down ideas on white paper to pick up a relevant one for transport domain.

Here's my first sketch by around 11:30 AM

Now that we have an idea and a flow of the app - time to get our hands dirty and develop the app. Siddhartha has started to set up the basic Ionic project and then we split up modules to develop.

He worked on working with Google places API and screens related to that and I started working on Google maps directions API and getting to plot an optimized route for a given set of points. Finally we integrated them and came up with a solution for any tourist planning to visit some city!

USP: Guide a tourist by providing him options to choose places of interest, optimize his itinerary to give him confidence, provide an estimated fare and Taxi options to convert his visit to a booking!

Here's the screenshots after implementation and app will be released soon!

That's how we've built an app from scratch err.. sketch till working Android app.

Laravel Installation in 30 seconds Flat - Mac OS

Found this on codem0nk3y - publishing it here so that I can find it easily next time.

We've got a new installer in the form of a PHP archive(.phar). Once installed, you can fire up a new Laravel project simply by running laravel new foo in a terminal window. That is, of course, assuming you've moved it somewhere inside your path and renamed it to remove the .phar extension.

When I used the new installer to create a fresh Laravel project just now, I had an *entire* project ready to go in less than 30 seconds(!) and I'm on a relatively slow connection. Gone are the days of putting the kettle on after creating a new project with composer.

So, save yourself some time before your next new Laravel project, and prepare yourself now. Try this out for size:

wget http://laravel.com/laravel.phar && chmod +x laravel.phar && mv laravel.phar /usr/local/bin/laravel

This will fetch the new installer, add the execute bit so you can actually use it, then moves it to/usr/local/bin which should be in your PATH. If it's not, either add it so it is, or put it somewhere else that is - doesn't matter either way. Of course, there's always the manual option if you're that way inclined.

When you've installed the installer, run laravel --version to make sure it works. It does? Awesome! Now create a project and, as it'll tell you when done, build something amazing!

UX Report on BBM

*Large icons annoying *After keypad and icons .. There is a very little space left for me to see messages *wrong text copying *why do we need back icon at bottom when we have phone soft key? *emojis are bad tiny and non adorable *copy text is much better and smooth in whatsapp *send picture is slow *scrolling up the messages is not smooth *send key on keypad is nice but why there's another send icon up there? *R and D are not so intuitive... Tick marks were more intuitive!!

An unwanted app called BBM on Android

Though I never used a blackberry phone or BBM in my life. I've heard a lot about it and saw a lot of people posting their BBM PIN on their Twitter Bio!

I am comfortable with Whatsapp as it is already connecting me with friends on Android, iPhone and Blackberry, but News all around made me curious to try this BBM today.

I've downloaded this app which was listed in Play Store sized at 12.67MB. After it is installed, I opened the app feeling excited to see the features it offers and the advantages that it would have over other chat applications. To my surprise, they gave me a screen saying that I have to enter my email id and stand in a line waiting for their approval, kind of waiting list :o which is a very bad first impression to me.

  iPhone is a very flashy thing, if offers you a lot and you pay a price for it and there's some meaning in standing in a line for that - but for BBM - a line or waiting time?? WT* .. Why do a user will wait for some *** app to let you use it - this is not even providing something all new and never seen before features. This made me feel frustrated and I uninstalled it - They lost an active install! 

And it;s loading n loading for a long time when I tried to force close and open it again

In my view, an app is something which might be useful for a user, but some apps which has a lot of competition and alternatives have a need to grab the user's attention with their awesomeness. Else, you cannot make a first impression and cannot retain the user. Whatsapp does it very well as the on-boarding process would be so simple that you will start using it in seconds.

Google changes way of accessing it's other products

Google today morning has changed the way of accessing their other products. 

As you can see in above screenshot, we generally used to navigate between mail, Drive, search etc using the bar on top which had corresponding links.

Starting today, you will get to see a Grid beside your profile image on top-right corner as shown below.

Once you click on that grid, it will list down the major products or most frequently used products in first glance as a grid of 3x3.

On clicking "More" or scrolling down will give you other products as shown below

This was first observed today on Gmail. Hope you aloso would have got this. Check now and let us know how you feel about this UI change.

Basic Softwares and Drivers to be Installed in Dell after Formatting

Hi Guys,

I had to format my Dell laptop when ever It is screwed up badly. But once installing a the fresh copy of windows isn't enough for it's survival. It looks pretty bad with that awkward resolution of 800x600 and can't even work using that.

So, On my DELL Studio 1555, I normally have a basic set of softwares and drivers which will make it usable for a naive user for performing his daily activities.

I wanted to list out them here, so that it would be easy for me to share this with my friends or parents for their next installation when I am busy.
