Phytic acid is a small molecule found in seeds like grains, beans, and nuts that binds (chelates) certain essential minerals鈥攑articularly calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc鈥攁nd reduces their absorption from food. This applies to a single meal, not overall nutrient absorption throughout the day. In other words, phytic acid reduces mineral absorption during the meal but doesn't have any effect on subsequent meals. However, when you eat different types of food that contains high phytic acid with most of your meals, mineral deficiencies may develop over time. B12 is a necessary vitamin, and deficiency can cause nervous system damage or anaemia. The plants don't provide any B12 therefore vegans (strict vegetarians) need to use B12 supplements. It is safe to take this vitamin as a supplement, you can not get poisoned if you take too much of it. If you are a vegetarian then you should be able to get it from your diet. Dairy, fish and eggs supply plenty of B12. Personally I don't like taking supplements but I would recommend taking B12 just to be on the safe side.
