Hiring out for a software project = Hiring a backwoods witch for a love spell
My reasoning?
1. Clear communication is very important
Want a dancing bear on your website? Done.
Oh - you still wanted your website to work afterwards? Should've said.
Want to find the love of your life? Done.
Oh - you wanted to fall in love with each other and start your lives together? Should've said.
2. They do not care about your well-being, so heed any warnings carefully
We did tell you that our software doesn't usually accomodate this feature - so it should be no surprise that it completely crashed your website!
I did say we don't do spells anymore because customers are typically dissatisfied by them - why are you so surprised to be disappointed by the result?
3. The contract is binding and complete
Here is what you requested in the submission form: "A pink dancing bear on the homepage for $800." And, you signed the liability waiver for it, and the invoice is paid. I delivered what you asked for.
Your exact words were that you wanted to meet the love of your life - you've met them, now. I delivered what you asked for.
4. Changes and edits incur additional cost and are not guaranteed
Sorry, our company doesn't usually do edits, but we can take down your existing homepage and rebuild it for $1,200. It'll take about a month.
What can I say? Making edits is harder than implementation.
Sorry, we dont do counterspells here, but you can do it yourself if you gather the rare ingredients yourself and meet these obscure conditions.
What can I say? Its easier to cast a spell than to cast a counterspell.
Moral of the story?
Whether you're hiring out for spellcraft or software, be very detailed and precise on what you need. Make no assumptions, get everything in writing, look out for previous client testimonials, and dont agree to or sign anything until you're 100% satisfied.
Make sure you understand what the finished product is going to look like and what it would take to do edits or tweaks, later, and get that in writing, too.
Or, have someone with legal experience evaluate your business contract before you sign.
Good luck out there, friends!

POV: I've come home from work after a long day
Me, calling out into the house: Hey big boy, are you ready for your special dinner?
You come bounding around the corner, so excited you skid into the dining room table.
You are my fat, clumsy, food motivated orange tabby cat, who would gladly sacrifice me for one (1) additional snacc.
I still pretend we are madly in love as you snarf down kibble like you've never eaten in your entire life. It is the cutest thing I have ever seen.

I was just thinking about undergrad as I was putting an award on my LinkedIn and it reminded me that the professor who inducted me into the National Spanish Honor Society, a lifelong membership and a huge honor, was a professor I had for an 8 am class.
At the time, I had untreated ADHD and undiagnosed autism, and I was constantly late to his class.
Not only that, but I arrived to his class 5-10 minutes late with a coffee and donut in hand from the downstairs market, which was always, always busy that time of morning.
But, after I inhaled my donut and slurped down my coffee, I was a model student. I participated in class discussions, gave the right answers to questions he asked, and gave a lot of input and thought in the afternoon class discussion posts.
He could have easily been offended by my chronic tardiness and taken it personally. He could have taken it as a sign of disrespect, and written me off as a student who wasn't serious. I've had a lot of professors who did exactly that.
But he knew it was just a time management issue, and that I was not a morning person. It was just that simple. He knew it had nothing to do with him or his class, because as soon as I had caffeine and fast carbs, I was good to go and ready to participate.
And instead of writing me off, he offered me up as a candidate to the National Honor Society.
And I'm so glad he did, because that award reminds me that I was a great student in a learning environment that gave me flexibility to be myself.
I dont think I would have performed well if he constantly harped on me for being late. It wouldn't have felt good to be singled out in front of everyone and told I needed to be on time. He just let me be me.
We need more educators like that in higher ed, ones that let students be themselves and consider them when the time comes up for awards, who don't use arbitrary social standards to determine seriousness or capability. Some of us are just different, but it doesn't make us less deserving.

🌙 There's a little witch in all of us 🔮
I made this design in honor of Practical Magic. I watch it once a year. Sisterhood, breaking generational curses, and burying abusers in the rose garden 🌹

We love to love our ruins
They welcome us in when we feel
Lonesome
Isn't that what home is?
