If you have an hour to spare, this is a great presentation from a hearing mother of two kids, one who’s deaf, and a great example of doing parenting RIGHT. I had my doubts at first when someone shared this on Facebook and said it was “inspirational,” because I was expecting inspiration porn. But a few minutes in I was pretty convinced it wasn’t. At 25:41 she talks a bit about incidental language and how hearing children learn and absorb language through osmosis and so deaf children should have that same constant access to ASL models, and I was like, YES. This woman gets it. Later on she talks about the benefits of ASL on babies, deaf children, other people/children with disabilities, and everyone.

Director Adam Isenberg received the 2012 Margaret Mead Filmmaker Award for his film A Life Without Words (Una Vida Sin Palabras)
Filmed in 2011, Isenberg’s film A Life Without Words (Una Vida Sin Palabras) follows two deaf siblings in rural Nicaragua, who reached adulthood with no written, spoken, or signed language. When an aid worker tries to teach them their first words, the drama that unfolds poses provocative questions about the meaning and nature of language, of aid work, and of documentary film.
