Still Wakes the Deep - Time Loop AU

I'm still thinking about the joint survival of Davey Rennick and Cameron McLeary on the collapsing Beira D. Rennick has an age, a sedentary lifestyle, broken glasses, but a good knowledge of the oil rig and logical thinking. Caz has a boxing background, critical thinking, but a poor understanding of all plant operations and numerous injuries after running on an oil platform. Both are united by both personal accounts and circumstances that encourage cooperation in the name of survival.

Rennick is a theorist, and Сaz is a practitioner. Maximum opposites. But both of them flare up like matchsticks from anger. But if Сaz hits in the face without hesitation, then Renniсk knows how to hurt with a word.

And here you can beat the maritime tradition - "the captain leaves the ship last." Fate itself didn't allow Rennick to leave before the others.

When Caz and Rennick find themselves near the flare stack, they are confronted by an infected Addair, once Rennick's deputy, assistant for bribes and budget cuts in personal pockets. Rennick, frozen in a tiny cage of space, almost gets hit, but Caz pushes him aside, and they avoid the blow. In a limited space, they can only run forward, towards the flare stack. Dodging his attacking colleague again, Rennick knocks Caz down, gets a pen*trating w*und in his shoulder with a tent*cle, and the second hits McLeary in the stomach. Caz is looking worse and worse and Rennick can't do anything about it. McLeary asks Rennick to tell his daughters that he loves them, calls him a "lucky assh*le", isn't evil at all, and gives him a signal stick.

Rennick has a chance to become a hero and avenge the man he could now call a partner. On one side of the scale was a man whom he hated, but who sacr*ficed himself for him and taught him to be more humane, on the other was (no longer) the man with whom they had worked together for years. The choice is obvious, but memories and fear constrain the insides. Rennick bl*ws up the flare stack along with Addair and himself.

This event, these actions of Rennick, as a key figure, restarts the time loop, starting the day anew. The beginning of the time loop a few seconds before Caz enters Rennick's office. Сaz enters the office, pausing on the threshold, clutching his hand on his stomach in phantom pain, and Renniсk grabs his shoulder, which is shooting through with phantom pain. His glasses are no longer broken, and he can see Caz clearly, as well as all the emotions on his face, the tears frozen in his eyes - there was a mistake in the time loop, and together with Rennick, he remembers everything.

The silence between them - a pile of memories that look more like a fever dream - is interrupted by Roper's call with a message about the failure of the drill, the impossibility and danger of drilling deeper. Rennick doesn't take his eyes off McLeary, who is still frozen at the entrance to the office, and orders all work to be canceled, he will deal with the authorities himself, and hangs up.

Caz says, "You're not as much of an assh*le as I thought," and grabs Rennick in a tight boxing hug. Rennick hugs him more carefully and responds, "It's all your fault, McLeary."

Marshall: What if it wasn't Rennick who mutated in the helicopter, but the pilot, Archie? Rennick managed to survive, but he was overwhelmed by the debris of the platform, injured by rebar, and lost consciousness after the explosion.

The helipad and the place under it are quite far away from the main part of the Beira D and the living rooms, so the only person who, as Rennick remembers, should be nearby is McLeary, who didn't have time to board the death carriage. But Rennick is more likely to just call someone, anyone, for help, and McLeary, who has come to his senses, responds, "damn him".

Caz could leave him and walk away, thinking it was karma, but he can't leave, even if there's a man he hates (mutual) under the rubble. McLeary responds, curses Rennick for his cowardly attempt to take off alone, and, following the voice, finds him without glasses, with his face smashed by shrapnel, pinned to the ground by rebar and pieces of a helicopter, and, judging by the shadows on his uniform, wounded.

They continue to quarrel while Caz takes apart the rubble and assembles a kind of lever from the plates and fittings to lift the piece that clamps Rennick's leg. In the moments when Rennick is silenced by the returning pain and the fading adrenaline, Caz slaps him in the face or pisses him off with words, just to keep him awake. McLeary sacrifices his T-shirt under his uniform to put a pressure bandage on Rennick's leg, lifts him up on himself, throws his arm over his shoulder and drags him to the medical unit, promising to resurrect and kill him again if he dies in his arms. The medical center has a bed, an anesthetic and everything for first aid.

After that, Caz will contact Roy by phone, informing him that the evacuation plan has gone wrong, that he is with the wounded Rennick in the medical unit. And he tells Roy to wait for them for a couple of hours - the way isn't close, and the corridors aren't safe. In the meantime, Caz has to lower Rennick's pants, inject painkillers into the thigh muscle, unbutton his shirt from below, examining and feeling the bruises on his ribs, hoping that they aren't broken, and bandage Rennick's leg in not the most sterile conditions, stubbornly pushing aside thoughts-memories of how Rennick, half-delirious under the rubble, asked "don't leave me alone" in the pause between swearing at him.

@volatile95: When they get out, Rennick will be very angry and annoyed with the way McLeary slapped him on the cheeks and pulled down his pants.

Marshall: That's for sure. Out of hurt pride. Caz, of course, was able to slap Rennick a couple of times with impunity, but the circumstances and emotions were completely different from those he had vengefully dreamed of in the past.

Caz might not give a damn about Rennick's pride and convenience, but walking with an almost blind man through a crumbling oil rig with a thousand ladders and holes is a bad idea. So Caz locks Rennick in the infirmary for a while and returns with a spare pair of glasses from his office. Rennick feels better being less dependent on Caz, and Caz apologizes a little for his actions with such a "gift."

Volatile: God, Rennick clearly needed to knock the crown off his head.

Marshall: Oh yeah. Is Rennick loud but safe?

Volatile: Yes. Like big dogs. They are calm, they don't bite for no reason, but they bark loudly.

Marshall: Rennick is freaking out with his helplessness, right?

Volatile: He gets very stressed without glasses. And yes, at first he thought Caz would leave him forever. He cursed him with his last words. Maybe he attacked Caz when he returned to the infirmary. He's really scared, he can barely see, he's stressed.

McLeary knocks Rennick down on the couch, presses his weight against it and growls so that he doesn't twitch and puts glasses on him. Who would have thought that their iron king would have a panic attack. Rennick breathes deeply, clutched Caz, pulled him to himself and hugged him tightly. He shakes silently, his nerves gone. Caz is still on adrenaline and on a whim scoops Rennick into his arms. Caz's paternal instinct works even towards an infuriating old man.

Marshall: Rennick pulls away first. He habitually adjusts the glasses on his nose with his finger, and quietly thanks hoarsely, it isn't clear, for the support, for the glasses, for not abandoning now, or for saving then after the crash, or for everything at once.

Volatile: Yes. He also stealthily wipes his cheek from tears. Caz gives him crutches and helps him up, then he will help him down, and so on, to get to Roy. Rennick stuffed his pockets full of insulin for him.

Marshall: Caz could have brought Rennick a jacket along with his glasses (there's another one on the hanger in his office). Moreover, Caz would have come in it, not in his hands to carry it.

Volatile: Oh, this jacket suits McLeary, but it's small for him.

Rennick: "McLeary, you're as caring as a wifey, my wife is far from you." He also has problems with his wife, a divorce. Caz, unlike her, is the perfect wife, ehe

Marshall: Caz, starving and with his mouth full of food, "uh-huh". And he's content with a caress, asking how Rennick's leg is, how Roy's sugar level is.

Volatile: "The tourniquet was lowered a little, Dave drinks a lot of water and urinates. Both of us," Roy chuckles, Rennick echoes. This means that Davey is doing well with his kidneys, and Roy is shedding excess sugar. Roy also says quite happily that Rennick has pockets full of insulin, both short-acting and long-acting. A walking first aid kit.

Marshall: When they move to the control room, they will bring water and canned food for Finlay and Brodie, because the living rooms, and with them the dining room, are beginning to flood.

Volatile: Caz is, as usual, a porter, a protector, and a guide (Rennick actually leads everyone. He knows the whole Beira D without maps and is able to navigate it with his eyes closed.)

After the rescue, Roy and Rennick lie in the same hospital room. Roy talks a lot, talks about Caz's background. And Rennick doesn't think he's such an asshole anymore (who brought the police to his door)

Caz, remembering that his friend is in the same room with Rennick, takes two bags of fruits and goodies. And two extra pillows. He puts one under Roy's neck, the other under Rennik's leg.

I'm very glad to see the news about the release of DLC Siren's Rest for my favorite game.

And we will play as a woman (what is the probability that Kaz's wife decided to find out where her hubby went? xd). 187 meters, by the way, isn't much for diving (diving record is 332,35 meters).

I mean, our favorite platform Beira-D isn't very deep and has sunk. I wonder how much time has passed since the events of the first game.

Like, the same bodies didn't really decompose, and they weren't destroyed by an explosion (if there was one at all, and this isn't Caz's hallucination)

In any case, then it's interesting how the bodies didn't decompose in the water in 10-11 years (microorganisms and fish don't mind eating dead meat). Either The Shape creates a certain ecosystem there, or it uses the bodies as bait, I'm not sure.

Perhaps the remnants of the personalities of the people in these bodies and monsters suffocated underwater, but The Shape itself lives quietly under the water column. So there's a chance that all the characters we remember have mutated into something even more non-human.

In fact, the trailer clearly shows how well The Shape probes feel in the water and how slow they were on land. So rest in peace. Judging by the hallucinations, the main character's (Mhairi) chances of staying alive are the same as Caz's.
