so recently, on my twitter, I made a post about how one of the things I hate seeing in ships and makes me ship it less is when the love interests in a couple are mean to the loved ones of their partners - and I noticed that it's something mx/tx loves to do which is one of the reasons I don't ship her main pairs too strongly.
so the implications of the post are:
this is an opinion post - no where does it say that I think her ships are bad, the trope is bad and/or you shouldn't ship it - this tweet was meant to express a preference that I wanted to talk about with my circle of friends
I think Mx/tx's love interests all do this to a certain extent and most importantly, in my pov, the behavior is unjustified - again this is my perspective based on how interpret the text and I'm not saying this is an objective fact within her text
so of course, the other sides of the fandom found it and decided to comment something along the following
the hate was justified (basically saying I'm wrong for having an opinion about a ship/trope)
the love interests should have been worse
of course as someone who overtly chengxian/allcheng/jiang cheng fan, I would have an opinion like this (implying its bad)
and honestly, if they disagree with my opinion, that's fine, you have the option to scroll away, block or rant about in a vague posting way (one of the reasons I was glad most of the quote retweets were from private blogs/ones that won't follow me)
but if you know that we clearly don't agree, that my blog shows you that we have different preferences and that this post was about said preferences, why are you commenting or engaging in any in a post that has nothing to do with you?
if you were in a coffee shop and there's a group of people beside you discussing a piece of media that you like but with opinions you disagree with, would you go up to them and randomly start talking about your disagreements? no, you would keep that shit to yourself and/or dm a friend if you really want to rant about it
the fact that people refuse to use social media like a digital public space and think you need to not only have an opinion on things but you have to constantly express it when it's clearly not welcome is one of the pitfalls of fandom expanding so quickly
if I went around barging into public twitter discussions to rant about my personal opinion in every post I disagree with, I would have to quit my job and do this all day.
it wasn't even like the engagements were productive - like they didn't mention a specific ship and why the love interest's actions were justified via examples from the canon content.
most of the replies were along the lines of "I think he was completely justified and actually should have been worse" or "character a, b, c is perfect, you're just dumb for being a chengxian/jc fan" so it was in no way encouraging of a debate/discussion about their actions
so why engage with the post in a way that tags me? that alerts me to your post with your disagreements when they have nothing to do with me and my post about my personal opinion
we don't follow each other, we don't know each other, we clearly don't have common opinions, why do you think I want to know about what you think when me and my post never asked?
the only possible positive thing that happened out of this was I was able to give my friends a free blocklist.
tldr your opinion is your problem, stop making it mine by assuming you are welcome in every discussion, learn to behave with respect to other people's opinions

imagine you're 16 years old and you have a huge crush on this celebrity that you use as a coping mechanism to get through high school and your shitty home life. then your celebrity crush openly protests against the corrupt government which causes him to get canceled on Twitter and his old boy band kicks him out and his parents get assassinated. then one day you go to the bar and he's there getting blackout drunk and starting fights with people so you follow him around to make sure he doesn't die but then he almost gets hit by a bus so you push him out of the way and get hit by the bus instead. when you wake up in the hospital no one knows where he is but you miraculously have a full scholarship to law school. 30 years pass and you become very successful lawyer. you get a case representing a garbage man who uncovered key evidence in an unsolved murder from 30 years ago. you go to meet with your new client for the first time. it's your old celebrity crush.
that's what happened to hua cheng

We talk a lot about how Jiang Cheng gave up his life in a heartbeat to save Wei Wuxian from the Wen soldiers, but actually he made that decision twice: one for his brother and one for his sister, Jiang Yanli.
I know we were all having an emotional breakdown at the moment, but by then Wei Wuxian was no longer in control. Everything was happening around them, even Lan Wangji was attacked. And Jiang Cheng did nothing to protect himself as the last living heir of Yunmeng Jiang. He just kept holding his sister.
Tumblr media
I look at this— it's always the first image that comes to mind every time I listen to Yi Nan Ping— and I honestly think he was waiting for the blade to land on him next. If things had gone his way before he remembered why he couldn't die yet, Jiang Cheng would have gone gladly with Jiang Yanli that night.

Jiang Cheng Jiang Cheng Jiang Cheng
i am so happy he’s the first ask I got, because LOL there is a reason everyone is like “please add some white, black, and grey to this purple ensemble” when they look at him! He’s just. He. Okay, no, there’s too much to break down, I will sum up.  My preferred Jiang Cheng is demisexual and demiromantic. I think he finds it really, really difficult to let his guard down around anyone, whether that’s “letting his guard down enough to find making out fun instead of stressful” or “relaxing enough to find someone else interesting, instead of being constantly on guard for how that person must want something from him he doesn’t want to give up.” I also think he desperately wants to let his walls down, and that this is (part of) why we see him express affection through arguing so often—it’s the affection that gives you plausible deniability, that lets you wrap yourself up in your defenses but reach out to someone else anyway.  I think he’s the kind of demi-ace who wants, badly, to get married and be in love, and is deeply frustrated with himself when the right circumstances don’t magically arise. I think he’s probably shoved himself into some deeply uncomfortable intimate situations over the years in an attempt to, like, sink or swim, and the results left him feeling terrible enough to not try to let his guard down again for like. another five to ten years. and unlike allo people, he’s not, like, sexually frustrated with this inaction, he’s mostly emotionally frustrated—because this is a man for whom family is critically, essentially important! This is a man who has one person to call his own left in the world and he’s fifteen! If he could have gotten married and had a bunch of children in the 13-16 years, it would have made him really happy, and he knows that—but he couldn’t do it.  Because he’s demi. Also, obviously, because he doesn’t know how to handle his own grief. But yeah, because he’s demi.

#jgy: *tries to give his parental opinion*#jc: hold on let me ask your wife#jgy: wait that's not-#jc: she said no#and that's the end of it#'cause jgy never figured out how to win an argument against qs
OK I had wine with dinner so I'm going to say it again: Jiang Cheng and Qin Su should unionize. Jin Guangyao has his evil friends who really get him and support him in his atrocities & are thus included in his daily life and his aspirational paragon sworn bothers who are embraced by the society that rejects him yet bind their reputations to his in a very unstable throuple that eats all of his emotional energy but in the midst of all of this WHO is staying home and raising his children?

listen I know demonic cultivation is inherently corrosive to the soul and/or body or whatever and Wei Wuxian wouldn’t want to encourage it among the youth, BUT there is a 100% chance that not long after canon he ushers Lan Sizhui out to the woods, somewhere they absolutely will not be overheard, and is like, “okay, demonic cultivation is inherently corrosive to the soul and/or body and I don’t want to encourage it among the youth, but I need you to drop your Lan propriety for the afternoon and learn these whistles I’m about to teach you to summon Wen Ning in an emergency.” Wen Ning is there, nodding enthusiastically. (It was probably his idea; he made dead puppy dog eyes until Wei Wuxian caved)

Can you imagine if Wei Wuxian came back to life and instead of killing Nie Mingjue, Jin Guangyao has killed Jiang Cheng instead?

time for some more assorted observations and ideas from my twitter that were too small to get their own posts.
- All his life, Jin Ling has never given a thought about Nie Huaisang beyond “that guy who annoys shushu and shenshen and gives me stupid cute names,” but the first time Nie Huaisang greets him with a blank-faced bow and a polite “Jin-zongzhu” instead of a cheery “Hello, Beastie!” or “Good morning, Monster!”, he finds it aches in his chest a little.
- Lan “I say it to their faces all the time so it’s fine” Jingyi finally mouthing off to someone/something his status can’t protect him from, like an exceptionally powerful and easily-annoyed yao, and paying for it.
- Wei Wuxian vs. Xue Yang with the iconic line from Scream 4: “You forgot the first rule of remakes. Don’t fuck with the original.”
- It’s probably better for Nie Mingjue’s blood pressure that Nie Huaisang’s birdkeeping habits aren’t that well known outside of the sect, ‘cause he’d otherwise be burning a lot more proposals from affection-starved people who saw baby bro with his birds and thought “Gods, I wish he’d pet and praise me like that.”
- Meta I will never get around to writing comparing the necromancy in Mo Dao Zu Shi and Fullmetal Alchemist and how Wei Wuxian’s brand of fighting is very much like Father’s and perhaps people would have been less inclined to think the worst if he had fought more like Hohenheim instead?
- One Braincell Trio as the Sanderson Sisters. Ostensibly Wei Wuxian would be the leader, but God if Jiang Ching doesn’t radiate Winifred’s “I’m surrounded by idiots” aura so well. Singing required.
- IDK how many MDZS fans would have also watched Frasier, but Martin and Daphne’s mutual love of screwing with people is exactly the kind of friend/mentorship I want for Huaisang and Zizhen.
- Because I am still stuck on the donghua making Meng Shi and Nie Huaisang look like each other, imagine the social chaos if Jin Guangshan were to notice.
-  Yunmeng Reconciliation version of that scene in Practical Magic with the exorcism broom circle where everyone is exhausted as fuck and the sisters are lying on their stomachs talking out their issues but it’s possessed by resentment ghosts!Wei Wuxian in the circle, Jiang Cheng on the other side.
