This is mainly the place that one half of Wicked Burning Studios (she/her, 38) puts all of her love of fandom along with a sprinkling of mental health issues. A lot of Pedro happenings are happening. LinkTree!

Marilyn
Made this little WIP video of Sam's (the other half of Wicked Burning Studios) work on her Marilyn piece for Tik Tok and it was shadow banned for sexually explicit content. So I'm wondering . . is every video of a busty woman in a low cut dress shadow banned on there too? Doesn't seem right. Ain't their fault what they were born/blessed with. (Or cursed if that is their feeling on the matter.)

Been looking at way too much Harry Clarke art and missing this man so I'm here, combining them? Spent a very relaxing evening and I don' t know. We'll see how it goes from here. :)

Totally realized it looks like I forgot to post this guy once he was done!
My reference was an illustration by W. Heath Robinson and I added the keys. :) I had a really good time working on this one.
I've been bouncing around like crazy and like, upgrading. Got a car, got a new desk that will make my life much easier (and has prime Din Action Figure space). I'm still working on the Harry Clarke inspired Din & Grogu and hope to get to work on him a lot more this week during my breaks from work. So much excitement!

Din (Harry Clarke inspired) WIP
Tumblr media
May the Fourth be with all who celebrate! Meant to have him a little farther along by today but life keeps on . . . life-ing? I love Harry Clarke's illustrations and wanted to practice in his style and was also wanting to work on a Din piece so here we are. I may or may not have picked up some silver ink to try on this one too. :)

Got my print from @norththelemon all framed up. It looks so amazing honestly. Really love whatever paper was used for the print. It's lovely. And the work itself? The emotion, the weight, the framing with the branches and the flowers? Gorgeously done. There's a link to the shop under the cut. I'm really new to formatting and stuff on here. :)

Completed Acacius :)
Tumblr media
This one has been a journey! There's a scanned version under the cut. that captures some more of the detail but not the gold quite as well?
I'll write up more about the process in another post later but yeah. I thought about shading him more but then thought, as it is, he looks a bit like marble and that fits the art of the time.
The gold . . . I'll maybe throw a video up in the process post because video gets closer to capturing what it really looks like.

I'm working on a Din that I wanted to have done for May 4th but, haha! We'll see.

Still trucking on this guy! I went into deep focus on art to deal with a certain event in a certain show earlier this week. I'm being vague for my own sanity honestly! I've got a Din started because he's actually my number one guy. But Joel, I think, is gonna make me draw him soon too. I feel like I have no control over any of this. Haha! It's good though. Better than feeling stagnant, that's for sure. :) I do hope to have the time to finish this one up this week. But who knows? I'm definitely learning as I go with this one and it's been really fun so far.

Acacius WIP again
At this point I might be staring at him forever, but like, there are worse fates.
Tumblr media
As usual, more WIP images and some technique notes under the cut.
I mentioned doing this with his beard in an earlier post, but I really recently started using tracing paper to plan design stuff over the base drawing I have done so far so that I can save the paper the frankly massive amount of erasing that happens when I design. :) A lot of time today was spent getting this basic shape down for Medusa's snakes.
Tumblr media
Once that was done I took what I had drawn on the tracing paper which looked like this:
Tumblr media
And moved it beneath the base image and used my light pad to draw the snakes onto the actual drawing. I used a gray fine-liner as well as the black XS that I've been using the whole time to work on the snakes and that was a moment . . .and a lot of questioning every decision I've ever made in my life that led me to thinking drawing this was a good idea. I always hit that point somewhere in a drawing and for this one, it was the snake detail.
Tumblr media
But I persevered:
Tumblr media
After that it was a lot of time just getting the basic outlines of the rest of the motifs down and adjusting some of his cloak and such to be a little more photo accurate and that's what's all in the WIP pic that started all of this.
I've definitely been learning a lot about design and the way that I approach things. I want Medusa to be a little lighter and more ethereal than Acacius and the next step for me is to grab another piece of tracing paper and throw it over this base and work on a value sketch and see where I want to make dark and where I want to keep light before I commit to whatever I end up deciding. The concept of a value sketch is something I learned recently as well in an illustration course on Domestika and I feel like it's going to be a gamechanger for me.
Yeah, this was a lot of rambling about process and technique but I'm feeling kind of happy about it all. I hope everyone is doing well! And surviving all of the Pedro content that has been dropping lately!

Acacuis WIP
Every time I go to write something about this dude, I have to go check if I spelled his name right. I've been doing some penciling for the background and it's kind of shaping up, I think.
Tumblr media
Another progress pic of the medusa that I'm working on adding and some detail about the designs under the cut. :)
I knew I was a goner for this character with the first image release I saw, which was him in that Medusa armor. I love Medusa. She's an important figure in my life. I've been working on the tracing paper over this to start to add her design in:
Tumblr media
For now it's really all about solidifying where I want the snakes to go and keeping her melancholy. The background is different pieces of classical design from a Dover collection of art. The background fanning is from an ancient headstone and the leaves at the bottom are from another headstone. In the interim I've not had a lot of time to work on pieces this focused or detailed and have been pen sketching quick little things in my free time. Things may be settling though and I hope to be able to really dig into this again soon.

Joel in ink and watercolor
I detoured from my Acacius art to work on this mixed media experiment.
Tumblr media
I've just been trying to get really back into ink after a long time at pyrography and it's been an enjoyable process. The background is watercolor pencils. I was doing a playthrough and have been screen-capping as I go with the idea of drawing out some of the stuff I've captured. Hopefully there are some more things like this in the future. I'm not good with buildings AT ALL so I'm learning some rules of perspective and practicing. :) As usual, more about my life and some progress shots under the cut. Also with the personal stuff this time, serious trigger warnings for OCD and a death in the family.
Dropping the progress pics and then story-time at the bottom so all the triggery stuff is easily avoided. :)

And then the blue up top. As to the journey here, well. Recently my grandmother passed. She was a difficult woman and my relationship with her was equally difficult. The grieving process is never really straight-forward as far as I can tell, but it does feel complicated by the way things were not easy between us. In the wake of her passing, the responsibility for her apartment and her estate has fallen to me. I got through that first week of dealing with her apartment by thinking that on the weekend, I was going to unwind with friends, shopping and food and just . . . relax. Well, anyone with OCD will probably tell you that it likes to pop up the second you think you can finally rest. My issues are mostly around food. Contamination worries that somewhere in the process the food has been mishandled and isn't safe. This is at the packaging level, and nothing to do with the people cooking it. It is especially bad with anything that has to do with rice. For context, I'm also gluten free because of reflux and digestive issues with it. And most GF flours are made with rice flour instead. Also for context, most people know about my GF issues but not about my OCD. It's a newer development. As the day arrived, a friend was exceptionally kind and made a dessert with a GF flour and it soon became obvious to me that I was going to be unable to eat this dessert because of the rice. Along with that was my relative inability to explain why I was unable to eat this food because OCD is so very isolating and shame inducing. I mean, someone went out of their way to make this specifically so I could eat it. And I knew that if I tried to eat it, this kind person was going to watch my compulsion to spit out this food they had made.
I got caught in this loop where I was either having to shakily explain that I've become rather intense with my OCD symptoms or this vision of the faces of everyone having to see it in real time as I physically ejected this food, that I intellectually know well is perfectly safe, and yet I can't convince my system of it. The thing I didn't understand about compulsions before I had this . . . illness, is that I perform them before I decide to. My body acts and my mind follows suit . . .as does the frustration that I had no control over that moment. I ended up telling my one friend that I couldn't go and then ghosting. And now it's been a week and here we are. But this piece? I mean, this day was not my finest moment. I had to contend with how much of a grip this condition has on me. I was losing my chance to recharge before going into another week of clearing out this apartment, largely on my own until the last few days. And I spent a fair amount of time in a pretty dark place. But eventually, what got me to crawl up out of bed was working on this. I remember the effort it took to move even from lying down to kneeling. And then to get to my desk. To find the reference in my PS account. Like moving underwater. But then I spent the evening in lines and color and art and it's not perfect. In some ways I feel like this piece looks as messy as I felt that day. But, I guess the point is that this was just another time that art saved me. It's been doing that my whole life. From here it's back to Acacius I believe. I have done more work on him, so maybe the next post will be about that. :) And much lighter in tone. Maybe.
