[RANT + CH 4 SPOILERS]

Deltarune Chapter 4 ending is a masterclass in “everyone is valid and it’s also complicated”

OKAY. So I need to talk about that end scene. You know the one. Kris and Susie seeing Toriel and Sans absolutely vibing in the living room — like, jitterbugging, clearly a little tipsy, just two adults letting loose — and then the whole room just freezes. But here’s the thing:

Kris is allowed to feel weird about it. Susie is allowed to feel uncomfortable. Toriel is allowed to LIVE. EVERYONE HERE IS VALID

Let’s break this down:

Kris

Kris is a teenager. Their adopted parents are divorced. Their mom, who’s always been the pillar of “responsible adult”, is drinking and dancing with the lazy skeleton from the corner store??? That’s a lot! Especially if you’ve been dissociating half your life (or literally losing control of your body). It’s not about disapproval — it’s about Kris seeing their childhood shift right in front of them. There’s so many hints from dialogue from others that Kris is outcast (I mean literally the only human in town). They actively use escapism to get away from reality. Deltarune is ESCAPISM: THE GAME!! So, after getting back from the dark world and coming home to see Tori and Sans together…that doesn’t feel like their house in that moment. They are 100% valid in that quiet, complicated discomfort.

Susie

The moment Toriel slurs a word, Susie locks up. And if you’ve been paying attention, you already know why. The game blatantly hints that Susie’s whole backstory screams neglected home and/or abusive home. It is not a leap to assume alcohol has been a factor in her past. So seeing an authority figure she’s grown to trust, even care about, in that altered state? Of course she feels unsettled. Of course she goes quiet. And she doesn’t lash out — she just feels. She leaves. Susie deserves so much grace.

Lastly

Toriel!!!

I have seen SO many people come for Toriel like she’s being “irresponsible” or “neglectful” and I’m like… WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT. Toriel is a single mom. A working woman. She is also — stay with me — a whole person outside of her child. She is allowed to laugh, to dance, to drink a little wine with someone who clearly makes her feel safe. And when she sees Kris with Susie? She lets herself breathe. Because she knows her kid isn’t alone anymore. That’s not neglect. That’s trust.

And for people going “but Kris is always gone so she doesn’t care”—let’s be serious. Teenagers pull away. Kris is known to wander, and the town literally talks about it. But Toriel still checks in. She still drives them places. She still bakes pie. She still leaves the light on. She’s not perfect, but she’s present. And that matters. TORIEL IS NOT A BAD MOM FOR SEEKING COMPANIONSHIP WITH SANS AFTER ASGORE LITERALLY JUMPED OUT OF BUSHES TO SURPRISE HER WITH FLOWERS AFTER CHURCH.

Okay. Rant over. I needed this out of my mind. TLDR: everyone in this situation is valid divorce is hard and finding identity outside of motherhood is hard.
