Box Art Fail #7 - Cannon Fodder (SNES, Sensible Software, 1994) - This box art fail gets an assist from the in-game title screen, as there is a clear disconnect between the message of the box art (glorifying war in a cartoony way) vs the message of the title screen (paying somber respect to the fallen soldiers). The message on the box art gleefully says “War has never been so much fun!” but the title screen depicts a somber image of a poppy (a symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers). The fact that this game was developed by a studio called “Sensible Software” is hilarious.

Box Art Fail #6 - K.H. Rummenigge’s Player Manager (SNES, imagineer, 1993) - This box art fail is of course highlighted by Mr. Rummenigge’s UNFORTUNATE last name, as his creepy photo hovers over a black player on the ground, and the words “Player Manager”. Meanwhile, a white player in the foreground is popping ALL THE VEINS in his neck to prepare his body for the soccer ball (football?) And why does it randomly say “Kick Off” at the top of the box? This box art is horrible at best, and obliviously racist at worst.

Box Art Fail #5 - The Ignition Factor (SNES, Jaleco, 1995) - Jaleco is back at it again with another example of awful SNES box art. Who needs good box art when you can just slap a stock photo of a firefighter on top of a stock photo of a fire. No one keeps the box anyways, right Jaleco? This box art would be better served as kindling.

Box Art Win #3 - Outlander (SNES, Mindscape, 1993) - Finally some SNES box art that has some effort put into it! The perspective and framing of this scene makes the scene seem much larger than the tiny cardboard box on which it is depicted. Feels a lot like a scene from Mad Max, and that’s a good thing.

Box Art Fail # 4 - Paperboy 2 (SNES, Mindscape, 1991) - No newspapers were delivered in the making of this box art.

Box Art Win #2 - Mecarobot Golf (SNES, Toho, 1993) - I couldn’t decide if this was a box art Win or Fail. Ultimately, I could not deny that this box art makes me want to play this game, so therefore, it is a box art win.

Box Art Win #1 - Brandish (SNES, KOEI, 1995) - Definitely one of the cooler examples of SNES box art. This box art manages to look extremely cool, despite basically being a neutered version of the original (and superior) box art from the Japanese Super Famicom version (also shown).

Box Art Fail #3 - California Games II (SNES, DTMC, 1992) - This is one of my favorite box art fails of all time! First of all, the obvious -- WHY are their heads cut off? Second, WHY is there a snowboarder dressed in a heavy winter jacket, while standing on a California BEACH? Just awful.

Box Art Fail #2 - Fun ‘n Games (SNES, Tradewest, 1994) - For a game that boasts “paint” and “style” on the cover, they sure could have used a bit of both on this box art. This barely counts as ‘box art’ as it contains hardly any artwork at all. I’m really not sure what to think about the dinosaur in a ballerina’s tutu at the bottom right...

Box Art Fail #1 - Goal! (SNES, Jaleco, 1992) - A truly awful example of sports box art from the SNES catalog. Everything from the extremely short shorts to the gross gradient background to the terrible font just screams ‘cringe’.
