Love the logical series of steps that moves Jin Guangyao from having 1 eminently sensible, cautious hostage to 6 horrible, shouting prisoners so entrenched in personal drama they barely notice his evil schemes. 

His downfall is that there are too many pieces on the board and he can’t kill any of them. Lan Xichen can’t die because he loves Lan Xichen. Lan Wangji is Xichen’s brother, so he’s off limits. If Wei Wuxian dies Lan Wangji will lose it, so he can’t be killed even though he’s an immediate threat. Jiang Cheng really should die, but that would make Wei Wuxian (again, a threat) go on another dark magic bender. Jin Ling is his nephew, and his death will set any of the above parties off. Nie Huaisang seems helpless, and again, there’s an emotional element. 

If any of the other Sect Leaders were there, Jin Guangyao would probably kill them. They’d be in the way! But this group of people is so connected and emotionally interwoven that acting against anyone would threaten the whole situation. Hostage escalation. Exponential hostages. They’re just pouring out of Guanyin Temple.
