Notes on St. Paddy's

A week ago, Livehörnchen and me were at the St. Patrick's Day Festival in Fürth. The location "Grüner Baum" was lovingly decorated in green all over the place.

On Friday, March 15th, the United Kiltrunners hosted three concerts in the inn: Darth Polly, Deus Vult and Tir Nan Og. Traditional folk met Steampunk met modern folk-rock.

People from young to old came in their greenest green clothes and celebrated the event happily. The atmosphere was all jolly and a bit tipsy here and there, too.

After all, it was a great party event and we will surely come back to it next year. The best part is that all surpluses go directly to the non-profit association - the Kiltrunners help elderly or handicapped people on their ways through the town. St. Patrick’s Day Festival - Fürth

Fürth goes green again! Franconia's 'Shamrock City' Fürth celebrates St. Patrick's Day with a little music festival. The event will take place at the Grüner Baum inn, which fits pretty well, don't you think? On March 15th, there will be three concerts featuring the local bands Darth Polly, Deus Vult and Tir Nan Og and we will be there to share photos and stories of the event. Nadine has summed up all the info for you in German:

Bereits zum zweiten Mal veranstaltet der United Kiltrunners e.V. in der Kleeblattstadt Fürth ein kleines Festival zum St. Patrick’s Day. Vom 15. bis 16. März 2024 wird es im Gasthof „Grüner Baum” wieder irisch: mit Livemusik, DJs und jeder Menge Partystimmung. Das Kleeblatt, die Vorliebe zur Farbe Grün und die Liebe zur Musik verbinden Fürth mit der grünen Insel, sodass es kaum anders sein könnte, als dass der irische Nationalfeiertag auch hier gefeiert wird. 🍀🎶💚

Seid mit dabei, wenn Irish Folk und Mittelalter-Rock aufeinandertreffen! Am Freitag heizen euch Darth Polly, Deus Vult und Tir Nan Og mit einem Abend voller Livemusik ein, am Samstag wird zu Modern & Classic Rock und Irish Folk & Rock von DJ Markus und Udo getanzt. Übrigens: Alle Einnahmen aus dem Eintritt gehen zugunsten des United Kiltrunners e.V. Fürth – sodass ihr beim Feiern sogar noch was Gutes tut.

Livemusik mit drei Bands

Eröffnet wird der Freitagabend von DARTH POLLY, die mit Irish Folk und Shanties auf den St. Patrick’s Day einstimmen. Durch ihre harmonischen Satzgesänge wird so manche Gänsehaut beschworen, deren Energie dann direkt in lautes Mitsingen bei den Seefahrer-Shanties umgewandelt werden kann. Die Fürther Band war schon mehrfach auf der grünen Insel – und bringt jedes Mal ein Stück mehr Irland mit in die Kleeblattstadt.

Weiter geht es im Anschluss mit der Mittelalter-Rock-Band DEUS VULT. Klassischer Dudelsack wird hier mit E-Gitarre und Schlagzeug kombiniert. Diese spezielle Mischung macht die Oberpfälzer aus, denn die sieben Musiker sind mindestens genauso vielseitig. Durch das Einbringen von Steampunk-inspirierten Elementen sind ihre Auftritte nicht nur musikalisch, sondern auch optisch etwas ganz Besonderes.

Mit TIR NAN OG kommt eine Band zum St. Patrick’s Day Festival, die traditionelle irische Themen in ihrem ganz eigenen Sound umsetzt. Moderner Irish Folk Rock begleitet das Publikum durch den späten Abend und überzeugt mit einem Mix aus leichten Texten, aber auch dem ein oder anderen tiefgründigeren Song, wo mitgeschunkelt und -gesungen werden kann.

12 years

It's been 12 years on Tumblr now. Since I can't share my Instagram posts here anymore, I've tried to think about this as my new blogging platform for photography and event news. It'll have to be good enough until my website gets finally done. Lots of things have changed recently, so I need to get my old butt up. Gonna share another post in a minute. Stay tuned!

Festival-Mediaval CZ II, 2023

In the course of the Bavarian-Czech Friendship Weeks, Festival-Mediaval once again moved from Selb to Aš to take place there as a warm-up exactly one week before the main festival. As promised, we were there from 1st to 3rd September 2023 as a two-headed team to report. Although the first day was rainy, you get to see photos of all the bands and more on Zouberi’s Facebook page.

In addition to the music line-up, jugglers and a medieval market, a huge dragon bouncy castle right behind the entrance was a highlight for young and old, inviting them to romp around not only during the concert breaks.

Day 1: Friday, September 1st

After the opening by Bläcky and the mayor of Aš – thanks to the translator, all visitors could understand both the German and the Czech speech – the music started on the big stage. Krless, a medieval crossover band from Prague, set the mood for the three-day festival with oriental sounds. Followed by BrAagas with a performance of traditionals from all over Europe, which captivated the audience in several voices and with historical instruments. A band baby, who joined them on stage in his carrier, visibly enjoyed himself and bobbed happily to the music. The headliner of the first evening was Tomáš Kočko & Orchestr, whose music made the visitors dance to elements of rock, folk and jazz.

Day 2: Saturday, September 2nd

The second day was opened by the German band Wyst, who performed their stories accompanied by electronic sounds and medieval instruments, providing entertainment already in the early afternoon. They were followed by Delva, another German band, whose folk music is inspired by Irish influences and put the audience in a dancing mood on this sunny Saturday. The dancing continued with Za Horyzontem, a pirate band from Poland, who performed many well-known and not so well-known traditionals in maritime folk garb. The headliner was eagerly awaited: Corvus Corax. As in 2022 at the Festival-Mediaval in Selb, the musicians from Berlin performed their "Era Metallum" show, in which they underlay their otherwise medieval sounds with metal. The band was accompanied by the monsters of the "Schattenwelt Südharz", which they incorporated into their show. The mythical creatures already roamed the market during the day and were a popular photo motif.

Day 3: Sunday, September 3rd

In order to attract not only music-loving visitors but also families to the market, the festival was one day longer this time. So, Sunday turned into family day, on which the big stage was not played, but there was a variety of artists on the market. Eleya Folk performed traditionals and shanties as a walking act several times on this day and alternated with the juggler duo Forzarello and the oriental dance shows of Kahira.

Conclusion on the Festival-Mediaval CZ 2023

The Czech version of the Festival-Mediaval was small but beautiful and we had a lot of fun there. According to organiser Bläcky, it will not be the last FM CZ, even if it will take another break next year. Until then, its big brother will take place as usual – from 6th to 8th September 2024.

Festival-Mediaval CZ 2023

Hello folks and followers,

 do you remember Festival-Mediaval CZ, the Czech baby of Festival-Mediaval, which took place in 2018? Well, years later the second version of that festival is about to set off now! In a small town called Aš situated in the borderlands of Cheb District in the Czech Republic the sweet little event will happen from September 1st to 3rd, 2023.

 One more day for families

The festival is longer than its predecessor – there are three instead of two festival days now! Friday has been added as starting day and therefore, Sunday will become the “family day” on F-M CZ! As its mother-festival promises, it will be an atmospheric event again, filled with mediaeval flair and pagan vibes. There will be a mediaeval market, dancers, acrobats, sword-fights, fire shows, and of course, music groups.

Apart from that the line-up is also quite extraordinary again. Bands are Corvus Corax, Tomáš Kočko & Orchestr, BraAgas, Za Horyzontem, Krless, Delva, Wyst and Eleya Folk. You can expect ancient instruments, folk, mediaeval tunes and world music. Headliner Corvus Corax are touring with their heavier “Era Metallum” program right now. Last year, they played that set in Selb. I’ll take photos of all the bands and I will publish them on my Facebook page and some highlights and stories on my Instagram and (hopefully) Tumblr as well. I might pick some images for DeviantArt as well (might reactivate that first), but if you’re really interested in the pictures, make sure you follow me on your medium of choice!

 If you happen to live somewhere between Germany and Czechia, why not come to the festival yourself and see for yourself? Prices are still as low as they were before the pandemic! Tickets are available at the low base price of 30,00 Euros or about 750,00 Koruny.
