I recently rewatched s2 and it absolutely killed me to see how heartbroken Steve was in the alley breakup scene—Joe and Natalia’s performances were top-notch, and I’ll never get over the way Steve’s voice trembles when he says, “Well then tell me…You love me.” I know a lot of people like to use parallels between Ted and Steve to “prove” that Steve is the wrong choice for Nancy (retreating to safety, normalcy, regression, blah blah blah I’m sure you’ve heard this spiel before) but, if anything, I think the alley scene conveys just how different the two men are and how Steve has essentially become a foil to Ted. 

It’s been well-established that Nancy’s difficulty with verbally expressing love, like Mike, can be attributed to the example that Ted and Karen set as a married couple. Nancy explicitly tells Jonathan that she doesn’t think her parents ever loved each other and only ended up together out of obligation/expectation/financial security. Ted is emotionally unavailable and completely detached from the troubles of his wife and children. His complacency is reflected in how out of touch he is with his family, and the burden has fallen on Karen to assume the emotional labor and nurture the kids in a supportive, loving environment. 

I find that kind of dynamic very telling when you contrast it with Nancy and Steve’s relationship. In a lot of ways, Steve, rather than Nancy, is the one who assumes the emotional labor to maintain their relationship. He makes mistakes time and time again, but he’s also the one who takes the initiative to fix things and admit he is at fault rather than letting his pride get in the way of reconciliation. Even in S2 after Nancy fails to give him the love affirmation that he needs to feel secure in their relationship, he STILL tries to reconcile and apologize to her (and this is after hearing that she left with Jonathan). And later he graciously bows out of the relationship to assuage her guilt about wanting to be with Jonathan (“It’s okay, Nance. It’s okay.”) In all of these situations, Steve is the one assuming an active role in the state of their relationship and is very much emotionally present. He feels so deeply, and he constantly puts himself in a position to be hurt, vulnerable, humiliated, jealous, and insecure for the sake of bridging the emotional gap between him and Nancy. While Ted’s emotional unavailability and neglectful attitude has contributed to a lack of investment in his wife’s overall well-being, Steve’s emotional awareness is exhibited in the way he, more than anything, needs Nancy to tell him that she loves him just as he loves her— he lets her go precisely because he doesn’t think she can reciprocate his feelings and will be happier with Jonathan, rather than pressuring her to stay with him out of obligation the way Karen feels trapped in her own marriage.

I bring this up because it also got me thinking about how passive Nancy can be in relationships due to her tendency to suppress emotions. What I find particularly compelling is how significant a role the verbal expression of love played in Stancy’s relationship vs J*ncy’s. Isn’t it interesting that there was never an explicit love confession/admission of feelings between Nancy and Jonathan? It goes from other characters essentially telling her who she is, what she feels, who she loves (“But you don’t love Steve.” “This isn’t you.” “You’re just another suburban girl who thinks she’s rebelling” “You should go with him” “Share the damn bed”) to her jumping into a relationship with Jonathan as a way of proving that she doesn’t “retreat” to safety. And yes, they tell other characters that they love each other in S4 (to convince themselves that everything is fine, might I add), but I always found it odd that not once onscreen do Nancy and Jonathan say “I love you” to each other. There’s so much reliance on the implication of love through action and other characters’s remarks rather than the verbal expression of it between the two of them…(I guess “shared trauma” is their “I love you” ??)

All that being said, I think this leaves the door open for Nancy to undergo so much growth in S5. Namely her taking an active role in her relationships + being in tune and honest with her feelings -> healing from trauma rather than suppressing it. To truly complete her growth as a character it is crucial that she discovers her own voice by filtering out all of the competing voices around her. And what better way to show how much internal growth has taken place than by seeing her fight for her relationship, bare her soul, and verbally express her love for Steve? As opposed to letting others tell her how she feels, she would be the one taking the initiative, thus finding conviction in her own voice/feelings/desires. And this would openly defy the trappings of a loveless, cookie-cutter marriage by proving that, unlike her parent’s dynamic, the relationship Nancy is fighting for is built on genuine love rather than expectation/obligation/shared trauma. Her feelings for Steve were never “bullshit,” and her realizing that and choosing to separate her past trauma from her future happiness would be such a pivotal moment for her. Not to mention how fulfilling it would be for Steve to finally receive the love affirmation that he desperately needed in s2 and underwent so much character growth throughout the seasons to be worthy of.

OKAY time for a review. I was… midly convinced by the sequel. In my opinion it’s a not so bad movie plagued by a not so good writing. I’m going to be vulgar at some point, don’t mind me that’s my way of coping. Let’s dive.

MIND THE SPOILERS OFC

What’s bad :

- Let’s adress the elephant in the room to get rid of it : « Nile can remove immortality » is bullshit. It's so stupid, it means that if by mistake she hurts Joe or Nicky in training then paf ! RIP gay people. I don’t buy it and I don’t think anybody here does. I understand they needed a threat for the gang, but why not just threaten them to lock them up in iron coffins, Quynh’s style ? Like, you established the worst fate for an immortal in  the first movie, why not use it again ?

- Speaking of Quynh. My girl is out of water with no trauma, speaking perfect english (language of those who locked her up. Mh.) and not insane ? Eh, a bit disappointing.

- Not enough labrys in my opinion.

- Booker. Booker, Booker, Booker. He's my favorite character so I'm very pissed off *spit a bullet*. Ngl, I expected him to die and it didn't seem like such a bad idea. BUT THE EXECUTION WAS TERRIBLE. My man deserved so much better, he has almost no development, no redemption arc and he dies like shit, mostly out of selfishness: he knew Andy was as tired of life as he was, but he preferred to die and hand her the hot potato without asking her opinion. Erf. Also they both could have walked through that door, the “sacrifice” doesn't make any sense I'M GOING TO BREAK SOMETHING

- JoeNicky try not be captured challenge.

- Also Joe and Nicky had an argument at the beginning of the movie about Booker and Joe lying, and they made up while talking about something entirely different LIKE HELLO? The conflict isn't resolved here. It was cute tho, we like declaration and foreheads touch.

- HOWEVER. Nicky saying "ti amo" and Joe not responding ? DO YOU WANT ME TO GO TO THERAPY ?? Joe, when your husband says "ti amo", even if you feel guilty because you're lying to him, you say "ti amo" back.

- Do I need to point out what a flat character Discord is? I couldn't care less about her. Even pharma bro in the first film was more menacing.

- WHERE'S COPLEY? Like at the end, the guy might be dead, we don't know. Schrödinger's Copley.

- Tuah is... here. He has potential, but he's underdeveloped, so I don't have much to say. From my point of view, he's a bit of cannon fodder for the next film, to sacrifice his immortality to Quynh.

- Shall we talk about the dreams  stuff ? Well, it never really made any sense, either in the first film or in the comics. Like Nile dreams about Quyhn but Booker don’t ? Weird. And now ? Oh boy. Tuah dreaming about all the others but they don’t. And Discord ? Seriously, when you set up a mythology, you've got to make it logical, otherwise how are we suppose to write coherent fanfictions afterwards?

- I fucking HATE cliffhangers. Especially since  we've waited 5 years for this movie, and knowing Netflix's cancellation policy. At any point, Joe, Nicky, Nile and Tuah remain in a vacuum packing for eternity because we won't get a third movie.

NOW WHAT’S GOOD !

- Okay. I complain a lot, but I was super happy to see the sequel and to get to see again these characters that I love so much. I'm waiting for third movie to bring them all back to me. Yes, even you Booker. I'm delulu about him.

- I liked the vibe a lot ! It was less dark than the first movie, with more moments to breathe and appreciate the atmosphere between the characters. Special mention to the dinner scene after the first mission, I'm delighted to know that drunk Nicky snores like a boar.

- The film was more beautiful and colorful than the first one, and direction was better in my opinion, especially the fight scenes and choreography.

- NILE IS COOL! Her McGuffin role sucks, but it's not her fault, and besides that every time she was on screen I was like “damn, what a gigantic charisma she got!” . My girl is so stunning it hurts. Also the double spear ? Made for her.

- I still like Booker more than anything. I still like the fact that he jumped the second he had the opportunity to end himself. I just think it could have been handled better.

- « Has she spoken of me ? » « She never stopped. » MAYBE I DIED THERE.

- I'm relieved to finally have the answer to the question “If they cut off a limb, how does it heal?” and for that I thank Joe's thumb and Booker's head in the maze.

- I didn't get any sapphic kiss and that’s a shame, but the AndyQuynh relationship was cool anyway. Special mention to the whole reunion sequence, with Andy passing through the eras with the team in background, it was the most beautiful part of the movie.

- The soundtrack was better handled than in the first film. It doesn't look like much, but for me it was a major flaw, so I'm glad they've sorted it out.

IN CONCLUSION it was... okay. Now let's go another five years of waiting.

Something I've been thinking a lot about lately is how everyone thought Egon had gone insane. What Happened that made them think that. They've fought a gigantic Stay Puft Marshmellow Man TWICE (counting the 2009 video game because iirc it's canon? Correct me if I'm wrong), fought an interdimensional god, fought a blood thirsty ruler that killed thousands and was hated by all that was trapped in a painting (and managed to get in to beat him by making THE STATUE OF LIBERTY start walking down the street with slime that reacted purely based on vibes), found an underground abandoned transit system full of the moodslime, had a bathtub try to eat Dana and her baby, fought a giant murderous black widow lady, fought the fisherman ghost who turned an entire hotel floor into the bottom of a ocean, and that's not even mentioning them getting trapped on an island that randomly raised up from underwater that had been abandoned for decades created by Ivor Shandor who worshipped Gozer. So what did he do or say that made everyone else think he'd gone insane?? All I can think is maybe he was acting strange / eratic before, but he's always been like that to some degree.

I don't know. It's something that I've been thinking about. The correct answer is 'it's not that deep and they needed a reason that the others weren't together anymore and weren't aware of Egons death or know what was going on,' but also. What Was He Saying that prompted everyone, including Ray, to think he lost his mind when he'd been right almost every time before that.

I'm genuinely so curious as to what he was up to before this. What was he doing. What insane idea was working on prior to this or was he even working on anything at all??

Also want to clarify this post isn't negative 😭 I really love the newer movies and their lore / the newer storyline / characters, I just like thinking about small stupid things like this. Gives me something to think about / speculate about / figure out an answer to.

the school arc to me is so good because it drags ciel out of his position as a powerful figure and literally places him in the shoes of the person he could have been. the circus arc ALSO drags him out of his position as big bad queens watch dog/head of the phantomhive estate but the school arc feels like a mockery of a future that never was. this is what he could have been had his parents not died. and even then its NOT because he will never be that kid.

somehow, during my short life, i have managed to watch an obscene amount of britcom, mostly through family osmosis. this probably explains a lot about who i am today. i have recently been thinking about just how many of these things have passed through my eyeballs over the years and also just how many of them range from kind of to very to unbelievably gay. so here is a list rating how gay they all are out of 10 because i always love a list!

many of these i watched at a tender age so i remember kind of fuck all and i have not rewatched any for the purposes of this. so be aware that several of these reviews are based on hazy recollections of vibes

yes some of the ones with canon queer characters are going to have lower ratings than some of the ones without that's simply how the cookie crumbles. sometimes a show is just packed to the absolute brim with pure trademark typically english inexplicable repressed homoeroticism and it makes it feel gayer than one where a character came out

let's say 5/10 is what i consider the "average" level of britcom homoeroticism but other than that there's no system to the ratings just vibes fr

dad's army

this is probably the one i started watching at the youngest age, but i watched so damn much of it. i was too young to be looking out for this kind of thing but considering it fits the classic britcom format of revolving around the strong bonds between a cast that fails to pass the bechdel test i'm gonna make an educated guess at 3/10. there's probably old man yaoi in there somewhere. (and if i had to pick the main ship it would clearly be mainwaring/wilson)

all creatures great and small

i mean. OBJECTIVELY. it is not gay. it's literally based on real people who as far as we know were not in the least gay. but THERE'S JUST A WEIRD VIBE. AM I CRAZY? TELL ME I'M NOT CRAZY 5/10 (it's probably partly a side effect of watching this as a babygay since i would basically headcanon the whole main cast of anything i watched as bisexual. good times. i also had tristan farnon gender envy)

The day he first saw her, Ms Emma Swan in Storybrooke, Gold was certain all the air had been punched out of his lungs. He’d played it off, of course, not letting it show just how impactful her sudden appearance was to him. 

It wasn’t until he was alone, safely inside his shop, hidden away in the back room that he let his facade break. A trembling hand came up to his mouth, he had waited so long for this, for their saviour to come. 

It was selfish really. He knew it was but he didn’t care, Gold would never care of such things like selfishness. Especially not when it came to you. 

Twenty eight long years had passed since he had held you, since he had felt your lips against his, since he had argued with you over nothing and everything, since he had held you tight. 

In another world you had been the one for him. The only one who looked beyond the monster, the legend of the Dark One, who saw more than a coward, more than a creature. You had only ever seen him, all the different parts of him, the parts that he loved and showed off and the parts that he loathed and tried to destroy, hide away from everyone. 

It had been so long. 

Now he was cursed to this life, to remember every detail of his love whilst she remained none the wiser. 

He was forced to steal glimpses, to watch as you eyed him with something he could never place, not mistrust, hell you might have been the only person in town to not fear him. No, you looked at him with something closer to curiosity. How many times had you stopped in his shop, Gold’s heart aching as you questioned all the relics and artefacts in there, aching as you laughed and beamed at his stories. How many times had he longed to tell you of your life, to pull you into his arms and hope to hell true love’s kiss worked. 

He never did it though. Instead he endured the ache in the heart most people believed he didn’t have. He let himself forget the tragedy for just a moment, let himself smile softly as your own smile lit up his dark shop, he indulged your questions and flourished his tales just to hear your laugh, he let himself remember what it was like to be this version of himself, no harsh words, no scathing remarks, even when the two of you argued, he let his sharp edges soften for you. 

Months had passed since Emma had arrived in Storybrooke and things had changed. Gold knew people had started remembering, just snippets of a life beyond their reach but it was enough, enough to give the man something he thought no longer existed. 

Hope. 

For the first time in a very long time Rumplestiltskin had hope. 

He never knew when you were going to waltz into his shop, it was usually a daily occurrence but never a set time, though it was rare the bell alerted him that anyone was coming to see him. So whenever the soft ringing went off, Gold couldn’t stop his heart from skipping a beat, something he cursed himself for but only half heartedly. 

“Gold!” You called into the shop, he could hear the bright smile in your voice before he even turned around. 

“Hello, my dear.” Gold murmured softly, unable to stop the smile that pulled at his lips.  

You were different in this world but you had managed to keep the very things that made you you. You were still too curious for your own good, often following danger without thinking about it. So overwhelmingly positive and optimistic, such a stark contrast to that man that loved you. At first he had found it sickening and then one day he found he couldn’t live without it. 

You were already wandering around his shop, fingers dancing over the trinkets, chatting away before you paused. 

Gold heard your sharp intake of breath, watched as your eyebrows knitted together before your eyes scrunched shut. 

“Are you alright, dearie?” He asked, stepping out from behind the counter and pausing when your head shot around to look at him, eyes watery with unshed tears. 

“What’s this one?” You asked the old familiar question softly, fingers closed around one of the many items in his shop. 

Gold frowned as he stepped closer, closing the space between the two of you and taking your hand in his, watching at how you seemed to become breathless with the contact. 

He let himself enjoy the contact as he gently opened your fingers and looked down, his hand holding yours and his own breath knocked out of him as he looked down at the object in your hand. 

It was a bracelet, one made of gold spun from straw. He remembered it well, remembered taking the time to sit and craft the bracelet, a golden heart resting in the middle. He remembered how nervous he had been to give you the gift, a strange feeling for him and yet one that was not needed, not when you opened it and your smile softened as you traced the gold, looking up at Rumple with watery eyes much like you were now, pulling him into a soft kiss and murmuring how it was the most precious thing anyone had ever given you. 

“It’s a bracelet, dear.” Gold told you softly, his own voice sounding far away, even as his lips tilted into a smirk. 

“You know what I mean, Gold.” You laugh, the sound light but half hearted. “Everything in here has a story.”

“Right it does and that bracelet is no different. In fact that bracelet is a symbol of the purest love. Each detail hand crafted for the man’s beloved.” Gold explained, keeping his voice barely above a whisper. 

You looked away from Gold, tracing the bracelet again and frowning down at it like it was a puzzle you couldn’t solve. 

“It’s mine.” You murmured, eyebrows drawing further together. 

Gold felt his heart pounding against his chest, praying to any force that would listen that you would remember, that this is what you needed to break the curse on you. He looked at you, desperately waiting, hoping that when you looked up again you’d truly recognise the man before you. 

Your heart was racing as your eyes fell shut. Memories assaulted your mind, a man, Mr Gold, except it wasn’t Mr Gold, handed you a green box, you pulled the bracelet out and pulled him close, another memory of the same man, arguing back and forth with you though despite the words there was a smile on both your faces. 

Memory after memory came to you until it was all too much and you gasped for air, reaching out and clutching the man before you, finally looking up at him, the tears that had been stinging your eyes finally pouring over and falling down your cheeks.

“Rumple,” You breathe out and Rumple laughs, he laughs in complete disbelief at hearing his name fall from your lips, forgetting what his true name had sounded like when you spoke it. “Rumple!”

You choked on a sob, throwing yourself at the man who caught you with ease, your arms around his neck as you buried your face in his chest. Rumple held you back just as tightly, like he was afraid you’d forget everything if he let go, his own eyes watery as he pressed his face against your hair. 

Oh how long had he dreamed for this moment.

“My love.” He murmured into your hair, watching as you pulled away, only far enough back to cup his cheeks, thumb brushing along his cheekbone as you brought your foreheads together. 

“I remember.” You told him softly, another sob leaving you. “Rumple, how could I ever forget you?”

“I thought you’d never remember.” He admitted, his arms holding you tight. “I’ve missed you 

so much.”

“I can’t imagine…” You trailed off, realising he had spent years remembering everything, years forced to watch you come to him every day and not remember. 

“None of that matters, dear.” Rumple assured, finally closing the distance between the two of you, his lips pressed against yours, desperate and full of longing, it had been nearly three decades since he had felt your lips against his and it took his breath away. 

You kissed him back, fingers tangling in his hair, pulling him impossibly closer and feeling more and more memories come to light. You kissed Rumple, pouring years and years worth of love into the kiss, knowing there was so much lost time to make up for. 

You were both breathless by the time you pulled away, foreheads resting against each other as you just held one another. Neither of you were ready to move away, not just yet, not until you knew it was real, knew it was permanent.

The thought of forgetting Rumple again, your hands tightened around his suit jacket just at the thought and he placed a soft kiss against your forehead, keeping his lips there for a long while. 

Eventually the two of you did pull away, Rumple took the gold bracelet off you and gently fastened it onto your wrist, staring down at it with a mix of emotions on his face. 

“Took you long enough to find the bloody thing.” He finally muttered, causing a grin to spread across your face. “Picked up every other damn thing in this shop before you picked the one thing that belongs to you.”

You laughed, bright and loud, the sound filling his dark shop and Rumple couldn’t help but smile before drawing you into another breathtaking kiss, the sound something he had missed dearly but now he had forever to hear it. It sounded like a pretty good deal to him.

I just rewatch final destination for the 500th time and need to talk about the premonition of the rollercoaster crash Wendy has at the beginning.

You of course see Ian holding on, in a pretty smart way might I add- with his arms crossed over latched on. And poor Erin is just holding on hands on the thick headrest unlike how Ian is.

He looks like he’s kinda secure here ?? Of course I can’t imagine the weight of holding on but he’s definitely holding on better than Erin.

Now this one, he lets go first which is odd because of how secured he looked on and it leaves Erin still struggling to hold on HOWEVER- it looks as if she just lets go ??

Like her face once she realizes Ian drops first is like so upsetting ?? I feel so bad for her and Ian that’s a baaaad way to go but I was thinking-

It to me of course- does look like she just lets go to go and because of course her boyfriend Ian fell too. Just hear me out- what if she did let go to fall with Ian because she wanted to be with him. I don’t know if I could see her living and going on without him.

So, Bychance is on my radar and ... I think it'll actually happen.

Disclaimer, I realize this is me going full unhinged mode and some of this might be because I'm so bored lately but the more I think about where we left Will off in S4, the more I think Will might actually take a chance ( lmao? ) to be with someone new, even if deep down he knows it's not in his best interests--it'll be more a coping mechanism, an attempt to move on from Mike, and without realizing he might be repeating the pattern of his parent's relationship due to trauma.

This will ultimately result in growth for him, of course, and the breaking of these cycles. Will Byers will be free in the end, but the road there won't be easy.

So here we go--by the leaks of Holly being taken, and the outfits they are wearing, we can infer S5 Byler will mirror S1 Jancy.

Yeah. And how did Nancy start S1?

Having a one-time, two-time secretive thing with a jock ( bully ) that left a note in her locker at the start of the season.

And what is one of the most noticeable things that Stancy and Mileven have in common?

Yeah, they start seemingly very passionate, only to fall apart later. Add Bychance to that mix.

Now, about the place and time where Chance and Will likely secretly meet. At first I thought it would be Benny's Burger.

Benny's Burger, which also foreshadows Mike telling Eleven something about her Benny Burger's t-shirt in EP9. It is also established in these screenshots that Benny's Burger is a place commonly used for people to hang out, likely teenagers, to engage in illegal things like drinking ( and probably more, the 69 poster above Lucas' head notwithstanding )

We also have the whole 'WE ❤️ TIGERS' posters, and Christmas Lights which we have come to associate with Will, as it has been established that this is Will's favorite holiday as well.

However, Chance and Will would have to be extra careful not to get caught, so chances are they'll go for places that aren't frequented ...

Now, the main question is, why Chance? And I'll admit this is all oh so fairly loose and likely a reach, but if we are to believe Will is going to have a secret thing with a bully, then out of all of the ones introduced in S4, Chance is the one that I'd dare to say we can connect Will with through symbolism, albeit vague.

The first time we see Chance, we see the poster 'Defeat The Falcons' closer to him than anyone else on the team even though he was on the bench.

Now, correct me if Im wrong, but if there is an association with Mike and falcons, then it could hint at Mike having lost to chance this season. Foreshadowing he loses to a literal Chance next season? Since Chance didn't come out the bench this season. Yikes. Good luck, Mike. You're gonna need it.

We also notice he's sporting the number 22 in his shirt ( which considering the attention brought to t-shirts this season, I'd say this means something, especially bc 22 is Will's birthday and it is also speculated to be the date of the Creel Murders -- Chance and Will meeting at the Creel House oh god ... ).

Speaking of 22, this scene is interconnected with Will in California through music--it does have a similar context in which both Lucas and Will feel abandoned by their friends. But we also see what you could argue is an extra that is supposed to remind us of Chance behind Will wearing a shirt ( again with the shirts ) that says 'I love contact sports'

Moments before, we *just* saw Chance next to Lucas, in the same spot we see Mike as well--as if the two are being compared. ( Tiger vs Falcon? )

We know Will is associated with tigers, but we can also infer that he loves tigers, which connects him to the 'WE ❤️ YOU TIGERS' poster in Benny's Burgers.

This is as far as I have gone in my analysis, but I might rewatch S1 and S3 at one point to follow along the narrative patterns and see if I can uncover more.

My guess right now is if Bychance is established early on, then it might go for about a couple episodes before it inevitably crashes and burns--with Will being the one to end things, and then Byler happens at the end in a way that pays off.

i love that they changed how the three of them ended up going into auntie em’s because before it was a little concerning that none of them figured out it was medusa. Plus having a fury outside just adds to the tension a perfect amount i think, because it really traps them in there

all the discussion about the gods and what medusa talks to percy about in the kitchen - YES MAKE ME HATE THEM!! All of this is adding up to lukes motivations making so much sense in the end

ALSO!! Them harkening back to sallys line in the first episode when she tells percy that not all heroes look like heroes and not all monsters look like monsters - they brought it back so perfectly. Percy wanting to trust medusa because of what his mom said, medusa calling Poseidon a monster, ALL OF IT is so good

When theyre down in the basement and grover puts on the shoes and then just fucking. Flies away and disappears into the darkness yelling a little. and annabeth and percy just kind of helplessly watch him go before being like - welp i guess that plans not working. That was peak comedy

them using annabeths hat on medusa and then using it to kill alecto THEY WERE SO SMART FOR THAT!!! Also percy just the invisible severed head was a hilarious concept to me

when percy suggests burying the hat in the ground with the hat on to make sure no one bad finds it and annabeth just!!! Agrees!!! And then grover has to be like no that hats important to her its a gift from her mother!!! And then percys like well we’ll find another solution then. That whole scene was good yes i liked that

also annabeth revealing that grover was her protector too and percy asks about it and grover just changes the subject and doesnt answer. He is the KING of avoidance

also grover finally interrupting annabeth and percy when they start fighting and giving his whole speech about getting along. That wouldve felt a little cheesy and preachy and out of place from anyone else but considering grover tried to get them to sing the consensus song a few hours earlier i fully believe that he would say that

but actually all the jokes in this episode were so on point. Like percy calling drachmas chuckie cheese tokens. And him arguing about voting on the bus. Anyways

10/10 episode i will be rewatching like eight times before next tuesday.

So...I may have watched the Ramil/Paytai kiss scene a few times now. One of the things I'm really enjoying during the rewatches is the way the music/sound emphasizes what is going on for our characters...particularly Ramil.

Note: I enjoy music greatly. It can make and break scenes for me. But I'm not a trained musician. I will not use the correct words to describe some of the changes. I am in no way qualified to do this analysis, and I would love it if someone who actually knows the right terms does it. But until that happens, I'm going to say what I noticed anyways.

We start with the club music as Khanin gets some of our royal crew onto the dance floor. The music is generally cheerful with a lot of heavy beats. It's good bopping music. It's the type of music you feel in your chest if the sound is loud enough.

Then the music shifts when Khanin gets Charan on the dance floor. We pick up tempo and the soundscape changes tone while adding a new melody on top of the beats.

But it doesn't change until right after we get this shot of Ramil. This is no longer fun for him. It never really was, but - like the tempo - his annoyance has increased.

Then the music slows down while focusing on Charan/Khanin and takes on almost a dreamlike quality with slow motion shots too. Eventually the heavier beats drop out. We're no longer focusing on the fun in the club, but what this interaction between Charan and Khanin represents.

This shift is what triggers Ramil. He's noticing the dream. Khanin is getting to do the things he wishes he could do with Paytai. He's no longer just annoyed.

So Ramil acts out by dropping the glass. Basically signaling that he wants Paytai's attention...now. He's done with watching Khanin have fun with Charan. The dreamlike soundscape ends with Ramil shaking the glass and the exaggerated clinking of the ice within it.

All sound stops as the glass drops and shatters, and we're back to the initial club music. The dreamlike spell is broken for this trio, but Ramil's tantrum doesn't bother them. They weren't the intended audience, and they get back to bopping pretty quickly.

The club music follows Ramil/Paytai into the tunnel. Ramil is still focusing on Paytai dancing with Khanin.

And it continues until right before this line:

During this line, there's a moment of silence. His attention has shifted. It's no longer on the club or the previous dance. It's on Paytai and what Ramil wants from him. The silence is followed by a single lingering tone before Paytai says his line. Followed up by another beat of silence.

Then another lingering tone. Ramil is wanting but waiting.

Then he breaks.

The tones stop lingering and speed up beating with more urgency and additional layers of sound are added. Ramil is taking what he wants, and his focus is all on Paytai. But there is also a hesitancy in the sound, the notes of the other layer are shorter with a detachment between notes that depicts the twinge of anxiety Paytai has about this being a public place.

But once Paytai confirms no one is here, an ascending swell starts in the music. The notes are now connected in runs. The detached beats are still underneath, but they are drowned out by the melody. Paytai's focus is now on Ramil. He's giving in, and I'm sure Ramil clocks that shift. We get a lot of ascending and descending notes that almost match their breathing.

There is another musical shift at the moment when Paytai grabs Ramil's wrist to hold him back a bit.

The detached notes and ascending/descending lines are still there, but we add in another layer with long, lingering notes that gives us more of the yearning sound. I wish I knew the proper words to describe what I'm hearing that creates that sound, but I don't. It might be something to do with resonance and vibrato. But regardless, the music has multiple layers - underlying anxiety (detached notes), their desires (the ascending/descending lines) and the yearning sound because they really can't have what they fully want at this moment.

As the kissing slows down, the music begins to calm down with softer, longer notes on top. The detached notes becoming more prominent again as Ramil fixes Paytai's clothes.

And then we're back to our steady rhythmic tones (Ramil) with a short detached/staccato melody that repeats occasionally on top (Paytai).

The rhythmic tones slow down and soften as soon as Ramil takes his hands off of Paytai. He's back under control.

There's a final run of the detached/staccato melody as Ramil leaves frame.

Leaving us in silence...

As Paytai smirks and follows Ramil.

I went back to rewatch episode 9 after your brief comments on the “tea drama™️” yesterday because I didn’t pay much attention on the first time and I do agree that the way his waking up was filmed gives a very strong impression that he didn’t drink a simple tea. And all things considered, it would make sense she would want to make sure he wouldn’t wake up during the night to see her packing and recording the ~goodbye TikTok~, so of course there was something in the tea, I don’t think chamomile can make a PTSD light sleeper wake up disoriented.

My biggest grip is how the whole sequence was filmed in a very emotional manipulative way - for the audience - which made the it all feel cheap and cheesy. The other dramatic moments from the show all had a more “serious” aspect to it, I think.

Also I had to check again if Cassian made any promise to find her at some point, since people around here are so sure it would be the first thing he would do as soon as he came back from Scarif (delusional time, the guy is dead). I mean, he had time do to that before, right? It wouldn’t be hard to find her anyway, if he wanted. But he didn’t promise anything, she was the one to make the choice “for both of them” as she said herself.

And just to finish, one thing about their relationship that was always odd to me is how she is always the only one to say “romantic” things to him and not the other way around. Sure, people express their love in different manners and maybe he’s not the one for words anyway, but it just gave me the feeling that type of writing that is “men are too cool to say they love their partner” kind of thing. I guess the most romantic things he ever says to her was “I can’t lose you again” and “this is the most important thing for me. Us” which are… whatever. And well, I’m not rewatching the rest to check anyway. no time for more hetero-anormative cringefest

Just venting some of my main annoyances about the show and how they made him so male gaze-y, even in some small things. By the way, I really enjoy reading your analysis, they’re all very poignant :)

Their romance is so strangely written. Again, at times I was wondering if one writer was trying to strongly hint something that the next writer wasn't picking up on: In their Coruscant apartment, their relationship felt so perfunctory and joyless and almost claustrophobic to me. Excepting that one flirty scene where they're joking about Cassian bringing some of his Karl-Lagerfeld-esque alias into the bedroom (great scene on The Americans on all the ways that might end up fucked up for all parties involved btw, if anyone is looking for a show that actually goes into what being a spy does to you...), we don't see them enjoying being around each other once. Physically, maybe, like it's probably nice to sleep next to someone in the life they're living, but... I absolutely never got the sense they like each other as people, that they have things they admire about each other or enjoy about the other's personality etc. It feels so empty, so much so that I thought it was on purpose at first. Add to that that I thought it was weirdly filmed at times, too (grain of salt, I have not rewatched these scenes, and am not in a hurry to do so). The lighting was always cold and washed-out in that set, day or night, and the camera was often at really odd distances from them, like slightly closer or further away than is conventional, or we got odd over-the-shoulder shots in moments where I felt like romance conventions want you to be able to see both people in the shot etc.

And then the scene at the supermarket! Idk if I was just seeing it through a negative lense at that point, but that felt frightening to me. Like, if you watch the scene in isolation, it looks like someone's abusive marriage. The way he physically tries to stop her from entering the market, then agrees to let her go inside, then immediately changes his mind and gets all up in her shit telling her to leave, and giving the vendor murderous looks for talking to Bix, and she tries to defuse the situation with a joke or maybe give him a little "hey asshole, cut it out" nudge, and he's not giving her an inch, and the vendor awkwardly caught in the middle of all that... And this is yet another case of a bunch of male writers not catching the significance of a scene for a part of their audience. I don't think this was on purpose. I think they meant for us to think, oh, he's being a little much, he's very overprotective. But what I'm inferring from this scene is: this guy is trying extremely hard to control the situation and I don't know if he's above using violence to do it - including violence against his partner. I don't think that implication was supposed to be in there, it's just the all-male writer's room and a male director and honestly a middle-aged male actor performing it, but as a woman about Bix's age I'm watching this scene and thinking "girl, I don't know what this guy might end up doing to you".

This goes back to my little rant about the hangar speech. They really took the guy who defied his superiors, his orders and his whole coping mechanism/belief system to tell a woman that he's choosing to believe her and have her back... and not only negated the whole impact of that moment, because they failed to see the meaning inherent in that for a part of the real-life audience, but they. They fucking accidentally gave this man a whole arc of spousal abuse red flags.

But yeah, all that felt so strange and depressing and suffocating, and I did wonder at the time if the writer of that arc meant for that to be stifling and toxic - I honestly don't know where you would take the story from there, because if they'd just do the reasonable thing and break up over it, making them get together just be toxic for three episodes and then break up again would feel like even more of a massive waste of time for the audience than it did already. But it was so stark that I did wonder if it was on purpose, and the writer for the next arc either didn't pick up on it or chose to ignore it. Because the core of their relationship doesn't meaningfully change. It's less controlling because Bix has given up trying to go outside, but it still feels weirdly empty, even though they're now in their silly earth-coloured yurt (that does offer lovely lighting, but I do hate the whole idea of Cassian glamping off base while Mothma is eating breakfast with 20+ recruits at a table every morning apparently??). Bix talked a lot more about how great Cassian is (though only referencing things we have seen absolutely no proof of on screen at this point), but still doesn't say anything about why she likes him as a person. They do say a bunch of phrases to each other with some extremely nothing energy. And that's the other thing: I'm so sorry, when Diego Luna has chemistry with someone, that stuff is magnetic. But I have seen this man look at the camera in a beer commercial with 100 percent more spark than how he looks at Bix at any point in the season, or frankly the whole show. I don't know what happened here, but this man is dead behind the eyes in those scenes, and Adria Arjona only has her pretty and concerned look on the whole time (again, with the possible exception of their flirty roleplay exchange that lasted five seconds).

And the way he reacts to her leaving is honestly hilarious. He wakes up all hazy and lost, and finds her goddamn video (goodbye tiktok is hilarious btw). She says, babe, I'm leaving so you can be special, come back when you've won the war and maybe we'll talk! And he spends like twenty minutes trying to track her down, and is a little misty-eyed about it. We are told, though we never see it, that at this point this man is "a leader" and an extraordinary spy who's about to be promoted to pretty much the top of the career ladder, and we have seen that he goes rogue for shits and giggles all the time. You're telling me this guy couldn't find out where the Rebellion transport that left a few hours ago went to? You're telling me this guy couldn't track down his girlfriend whose every move he's been controlling for several years? What's holding him back? According to the show, it's not a lack of skills, nor a love for following the rules or a sense of duty to the Rebellion! And it can't be because she told him to win the war first - he hasn't conceded to anything she wanted to do without bitching and arguing this whole season. This is not a guy who treats his girlfriend like they're on equal footing! Why would he suddenly do what she tells him to do?

One can only infer that he kind of saw this coming, and isn't really trying to fight it. That's fine, again, their relationship seemed pretty awful to me. But I don't see what about that reaction screams "this man will go out of his way to find his girlfriend immediately after almost dying on some mission in the middle of the war". (Because why would he go after Scarif?? She said win the war. Scarif isn't the end of the war. If anything, it's the start of active warfare.)

And then, when Vel comes and tells him (for completely unclear reasons btw) that he should go find Bix again, he reacts with the most noncommittal "idk yeah maybe later not right now" type answer imaginable. Where is the man chomping at the bit to see his ex again? Is he in the room with us? Once again, Diego could not have seemed less enthused in this scene. Honestly, I don't know if outstanding acting could have saved this bizarre way to write a romance, but... we'll certainly never know. I've only seen Adria Arjona in two things that I can't say convinced me of her acting chops (this and, well, Morbius), and boy, Diego Luna can be incredible but I didn't see much of that in most of this season.

It's so funny to realise at the end of it all that Tony Gilroy thought he was delivering us a grand sweeping fated romance between two childhood sweethearts with a visible decade of age difference. Whereas I first saw something viscerally uncomfortable and actively scary, then the funniest, dumbest break-up I've seen on tv in a decade, and then another viscerally uncomfortable and actively scary moment when they show us the woman with a child in a war zone where she is an at-risk undocumented migrant with trauma and no support system, and the show is trying to frame this like a good thing for her dead ex-boyfriend. They really didn't just fail to deliver on what they thought they were making, but fucked it up six different ways in the process. Overall, this was a brutal wake-up call on how people like these writers and directors see relationships, and women in relationships, and the reaction to that is even more upsetting. A bunch of young women saw the same shit I just watched and are now insulting other people in real life while claiming that this really was the romance for the ages? Girls, I'm so scared for you. I don't know what the fuck this was, but it was neither compelling storytelling nor a representation of a relationship anyone should want to be in.

Anyway, sorry this turned into a whole 'nother rant. I'm glad you're getting something out of my ramblings, though! I don't know what I'm trying to do with them at this point. I guess I'm still deluding myself that I can find what the hell other people are seeing that I'm not if I just dig deep enough, but I only end up making myself mad over and over again...

Hooh boy, strap in guys! Watch me fall apart as I gently take apart and violently scream about the extended tbnw ep10 nc scene (be prepared for lots of parentheses because I have a lot to say and a very hard time putting my thoughts in a sensible order ✌🏼)

“Sex scenes are unnecessary and don’t add anything to the plot, they’re just porn and don’t have any artistic value”- PLEASE, have you seen the way Boss and Noeul do nc scenes??? I have been rewatching and losing my shit for hours, screaming at the partner in crime because these two make me feel so unwell.

Okay, first of all - This is everything to me.

Phu looking down as Cir tilts his head back even more (a beautiful look on Boss, if I may add). 

I mean, FUCK, the boy has had to guard himself behind an icy cold wall his whole life; can you imagine how freeing it must be to feel so safe he dares to lay himself totally bare? Letting himself be vulnerable, baring his neck and making himself small, kneeling by the feet of his savior (because let’s be real, that’s who Phu is to him), looking up at his everything with pure devotion like he’s worshipping him (because he is 😭).

It’s just a short shared gaze but it’s so meaningful *whines and grabs my emotional support patch of grass*

Listen, I love sex, I really do, and there’s no shame in it. But this is what really gives me a boner: the emotional desire, the intensity. The feelings and intentions are so important. And Boss and Noeul are absolute Kings at it (I can practically hear the partner in crime echoing “Emperors, kings, gods, legends!”)

Every time I rewatch this scene I have to pause here to catch my breath because I get so overwhelmed that my heart feels like it’s gonna leap out of my chest. I’m really giving it my best here, but I feel like no matter what I say, I can’t properly convey with words how this shared gaze makes me feel.

Phew, let’s take a lil breather together, shall we? In- - - and Out - - -

Which brings me to my next point: Moaning.

And not just Phu’s alluring siren call of a moan (we can all hear him loud and clear, thanks and blessings to Mame for finally allowing Noeul to let it all out after holding him back during lita filming), no I’m mainly talking about Cir!

Phu pulls a lot of the attention due to the volume and disinhibition in his voice but if you listen closely, Cir is right there with him with a velvety warm hum, a few groans, sometimes even just an audible breath. He’s way softer but it is audible how much he’s enjoying this; from their simultaneous penetration moans all the way to the grand finale and their shuddering breaths (okay, mostly Phu’s, thank you once again Noeul) as they ride out the high with clasped hands.

Another thing that didn’t go unnoticed was the multiple instances where Phu moans and Cir joins in, just slightly delayed. 

As if he’s groaning in reply.

As if Phu’s sighs drive him to exclaim as well, unable to stop himself.

Because hearing how good he’s making Phu feel is Cir’s ultimate pleasure (Cir’s auralism confirmed once again, if anyone’s still not convinced, heh). 

Gosh, this puppydog of a man lives and loves to serve Phu, in the streets and in the sheets!

And then there’s the hand on Phu’s neck

Yes, choking kink ✅ We all love it! (Although it looks to me like he’s merely cradling Phu's neck- but the image is beautiful, we are truly blessed.) 

Yes, Phu’s adam’s apple seems to be a very sensitive spot and Cir knows and loves it.

But what if it wasn’t (just) that? And here’s where I bring it right back to moans and by extension (some might say a long stretch) Cir’s auralism.

(Well, given that Cir currently has dick so far down his own throat that he could nuzzle Phu’s lower abs with his nose) one might argue Cir settles for Phu’s neck, his fingers not quite reaching far enough, unable to slide past Phu’s lips (the endgame once again being loud and clear moans; Phu sucking on them like a man parched is but the icing on the cake), but!-

His throat is where Phu produces those addictive moans that Cir just can’t get enough of. Maybe that’s why he constantly kisses, bites, licks, and in this case places his palm against it- so that in addition to hearing Phu’s moans he can feel them vibrating against his skin. 

Auralism plus, I think I might call it? idk

There’s so much more but my brain is mush by now so, uhm, where was I? 

Ah, yes! The beauty of Boss and Noeul’s nc scenes!

Listennnn these two are so hard working, emotionally intelligent and in sync with their characters and each other, especially in nc scenes - where are the awards for these two???

Nobody can tell me ever again that scenes like these can’t hold merit or artistic value.

Fuck that!

Yes, some works may have the audacity to call dry humping with no emotional depth a love scene. But then there’s Boss and Noeul, telling their story by acting out the most delicate details with almost atom level precision and some people call it porn (derogatory) ?🤯

Like so many things in life, sex has the potential to be beautiful and joyful and fucking hell, I see the beauty in this and I enjoy the fuck outta this. Art is supposed to make you feel things, right?

This makes me feel things! Many! (And yes, being horny is among those feelings and that is okay)

Agency Assignments: A comprehensive to-do list for saving Dead Boy Detectives!

I'm very easily overwhelmed, so I wanted to break down all the ways to help "Save Dead Boy Detectives" that I have seen floating around. This is meant to be something you can reference when you feel like there is so much you need and want to do to help, but don't know how or where to start.

It is of the utmost importance that we fight as an organized, well-informed front. We need to be on the same page if we're going to save our show, so let's get into it! 💜💀🔎

Sign the petition*

Review & Rate Dead Boy Detectives on Google, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes. Be sure on IMDB you don't just rate the show as a whole, but you also rate each individual episode! You can also "Like" the show on Google and click "Watched" which helps the show's engagement scores. (If there are other popular sites I haven't listed here, feel free to share them and rate Dead Boy Detectives highly on them!)

Notify Netflix customer service (through their online chat feature) that you're unhappy with the cancelation of Dead Boy Detectives. This is a short, 5-minute task that I wrote a guide on (with an example message) here!

"Repeat" Tasks:

Talk about Dead Boy Detectives!* You're probably doing that already, but just be sure that you're tagging your posts. Here on Tumblr use the "Dead Boy Detectives" tag at least (to boost our tag to trending) and anywhere that uses hashtags (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram for example) I would recommend #SaveDeadBoyDetectives and #DeadBoyDetectives as those seem to be the most commonly used tags! IMPORTANT: do not use more than 20 tags here on Tumblr! Any more than 20 and your posts might be marked as spam and hidden from the tags!

Create art, edits for TikTok, fics, gif sets, doodles, crafts, analysis posts, and so on for Dead Boy Detectives.* Having fun is important, too! This is an extension of the "Talk about Dead Boy Detectives" point, but it needs to be stated - don't remove the joy from the fight. If a drawing of our boys or a smutty fic with your favorite trickster cat king is what you can bring to the fight on any given day, that is a perfectly valuable contribution! It's not all emails and hashtags.

Daily request a show through Netflix. Bonus if you're signed in! (I do 3-5 times a day)

Send Emails advocating for Dead Boy Detectives (Email list & Email Template). You can do this as much as you want or just one time.

Send Snail-mail (physical letters) to Netflix advocating for Dead Boy Detectives. I also send a copy of my letters to Warner Bros. Studios. Again, you can do this one time or multiple times. There are dates set aside for "mass" mail sending as well, so check out info on that here!

Interact with articles posted about Dead Boy Detectives. Read them, share them, comment on them, thank the writer for writing them, etc. We want lots of press about the cancellation, and supporting journalists and publications will make them want to write about Dead Boy Detectives more.
