volo  is  a  product  of  his  environment  in  the  sense  that  it  influences  how  he  views  relationships.  everything  is  very   transactional  with  him  ���  though  not  necessarily  in  a  manner  that  reads  particularly  cold  or  robotic.  that  would  be  bad  for  business,  after  all;  if  people  think  favorably  of  him,  they're  more  prone  to  spend  —  and  coaxing  a  potential  client  into  making  a  purchase  is  really  just  another  form  of  manipulation,  isn't  it?  (  funny  how  people  pick  and  choose  which  is  more  socially  acceptable.  )  the  irony  is  that  volo  isn't  truly  interested  in  being  a  merchant  in  the  slightest.  he  was  left  with  the  ginkgo  guild  as  a  newborn  and  collectively  raised  by  its  members;  his  path  was  effectively  decided  for  him  from  day  one.  however,  his  actual  passion  lies  fully  with  myths  and  history  and  delving  into  ruins  to  unearth  what  secrets  they  might  be  hiding  from  him.  he's  too  ambitious,  too  insatiable,  too  damnably  curious  to  ever  be  satisfied  living  a  simple  life  selling  wares  and  he  basically  does  the  bare  minimum  to  remain  employed  (  to  retain  access  to  what  benefits  the  guild  affords  him  )  while  scuttling  off  to  pursue  his  own  interests  whenever  he  can.  but  he  has  grown  up  in  that  environment  where  honeyed  words  and  easy  smiles  is  the  name  of  the  game,  and  manipulating  others  with  insincere  kindness  has  been  totally  normalized  to  him.

that  doesn't  absolve  him  of  his  actions,  however  —  the  only  person  actually  forcing  his  hand  is  volo  himself.  everything  he  does  and  says  is  entirely  of  his  own  free  will;  it's  only  the  way  he  frames  it  in  his  own  mind  that's  a  direct  result  of  how  he  was  raised.
