big masterpost of fun things to do this summer
hi :) i like to make a big list of things i want to do each summer, and i thought i'd share all the resources i collected this year with y'all in case you want to do any of these things too <3
learn a new language. 🦜
i've collected a bunch of resources for french, korean, and mandarin so i'll be making separate posts for those languages. but here's some of my favourite resources - most of them are based off of krashen’s comprehensible input theory which is why they are fun resources:
french: free grammar lessons and quizzes for all levels, watch french tv, read manga in french, a drive full of french books, a bunch of french culture podcasts, a list of french youtubers
korean: anki grammar decks for all levels, super in depth grammar explanations up to advanced level, a bunch of resources, reddit’s ultimate beginner’s thread, read korean webtoon, talk to me in korean
mandarin: a bunch of anki decks, grammar gamified, reading practice, chinese reading world, mandarin bean grammar points
japanese: core 2000 words anki deck, grammar gamified on renshuu
spanish: language transfer for spanish!
learn to draw. šŸŽØ
this is more just a collection of art related resources. hope they help!
proko’s art library, a bunch of sketching and fundamental tutorials

learn guitar.Ā šŸŽø
i got a guitar last summer on a whim and have been having a really fun time learning it! here’s the main resource i’ve been using.
learn jazz piano.Ā šŸŽ¹
similarly jazz piano is something i’ve wanted to get into for a while + improv. this person’s youtube channel is very cool!
write something and put it out into the world! āœ
i love to write and it took me a while to learn how to submit stuff to journals. hope these help you!
a bunch of resources on how to submit to journals
how to submit to literary magazines by doretta lau
publishing 101
chillsubs, an easy way to find journals to submit to
make your own video games. šŸŽ®
by now if you follow me you know i love to make twine games. here are a couple of cool engines you can use for free!
twine, a text based engine
love
renpy or visual novel resources
bitsy
take a free online course. 🧠
coursera has a lot of options, which i really like. i took Yale’s the science of well being a few years ago and it was great!
make your own music or learn how audio software works. šŸŽµ
audionodes is a cool free browser software that lets you do this without downloading anything!
learn about personal finance. šŸ’µ
i feel like it’s hard to devote proper time to learning about personal finance so a lot of us rely on learning as we go, but there are some good resources and tools online that are quick and easy when you have 5-30 min to spare!
PBS Two Cents youtube short vids about personal finance
wealthsimple personal finance 101 (short videos. nicholas braun is in them for some reason)

who else was taught in school to remember what these specific states are called using my dude mimal the kfc chef???
his name stands for the names of the states on his body (and hat) from top to bottom (minnesota, iowa, missouri, arkansas, and louisiana, for those of you outside of the united states) and tennessee is a plate of kentucky fried chicken to represent, of course, the state of kentucky

A PSA on behalf of cursive
I’ve been hearing a lot of vitriol about cursive being taught in schools in recent years. Things likeĀ ā€œWe don’t need it.ā€ orĀ ā€œIt’s a waste of time.ā€ The most compelling statement I’ve heard is ā€œA typing class would be more useful.ā€ I understand. It’s not as useful as it once was. But I don’t like it when people say it because cursive changed my life. So I just want to put my story out there.Ā
I was diagnosed with what my tester calledĀ ā€œthe clearest case of dyslexia [she’d] seen in twenty yearsā€. I copied words wrong and couldn’t tell the difference. I once wrote a math assignment so it had to be read in the mirror. At the same time, I loved stories. Story time was the only time I could sit still. But reading? Let’s just say that my mother would read a paragraph and have me read one sentence. It took me as long or longer to get through that sentence and I was often in tears by the period.
Then, in third grade we started learning cursive. My family wasn’t sure how I’d handle new letters, but we forgot something, something I only realized years later.
The letters were connected.
This simple difference meant that the letters stopped shifting. And it changed everything. The words didn’t change around. And once I knew the words in cursive I could recognize them in print.Ā
The year I learned cursive was the year I went from picture books I’d memorized to the teen section in the library. By fourth grade my reading level tested at a college level (though I’ve always found that a little suspect since I think I mainly read books from the YA section at that point).Ā
I don’t think this would work for everyone. As I said, I have a very traditional form of dyslexia in which letters and numbers are jumbled (and man do I wish that this worked for numbers too). The way I learned how to read was by memorizing the shape of a word like it was a single symbol. And it would not have been possible without cursive.Ā
Cursive really did help me a lot. I don’t think I could have been a writer without it. So maybe... keep that in mind the next time someone rants a little too fervently against it.Ā
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Additional PSA: Telling a child with my type of dyslexia toĀ ā€œsound out a wordā€ isn’t helpful. Or at least it wasn’t for me. The word I am seeing is not the word you are seeing.Ā
Six-Level Book & 5,000+ Anki Flashcards by ADROS VERSE EDUCATION
To Learn & Retain Languages with Spaced Repetition
Remember all the times that you learned something just to forget it when you get rusty after not practicing for a while? Now imagine that there is some way to remind yourself of only the things that you are about to forget before you forget them, without boring yourself with the ones that you have already memorized. You may think that this would be convenient but also impossible, when in fact, it is possible using spaced repetition. Spaced repetition is a method of learning new material and then reviewing and memorizing that material over spaced intervals. Spaced repetition is often carried out using flashcards. The cards that you memorize successfully (i.e., easy material) will be reviewed less often, whereas the cards that you stumble over and struggle to memorize (i.e., hard material) will be shown more often.
In essence, spaced repetition is an enhancement of the old technique of learning by flashcards. Flashcards rely on cramming the material into the learner’s memory regardless of how many times the learner successfully memorizes the material. This makes the learning process inefficient and exhausting. Spaced repetition addresses this flaw by presenting the material to the learner with a frequency that is inversely proportional to his or her ability to memorize it. This way, the learner will ideally be presented with the learned material right before he or she is about to forget it. As you can guess, this technique comes in handy when used to learn new vocabulary.
Tumblr media
Specially designed as a fun, practical, and accessible path to mastering the language through spaced repetition, this ultimate package offers readers of all backgrounds a common-sense and enjoyable way of building their vocabulary and learning faster.
For each language, ADROS VERSE EDUCATION provide two products that go hand-in-hand:
Book: covering six graduating levels from beginner to fluent, provides an intuitive path to effortlessly improving your language comprehension, memory, and grammar skills.
Anki Deck: Featuring an incredible collection of 5,000+ Anki Flashcards Deck that you can use independently or hand-in-hand with the book, and contains audio elements to help you pronounce words and use grammar like a native speaker.
Visit their store for more on their products.
