i really wish that ehlers-danlos syndrome wasn't basically just thought of as the "bendy" disorder. firstly, there are more than 13 types of eds, and they all have varying relations to and degrees of hypermobility. secondly, eds are a collection of congenital connective tissue disorders - connective tissue makes up a vast majority of your body and, because of this, eds, hsd, and other congenital connective tissue disorders like loey-dietz, marfans, stickler syndrome, and osteogenesis imperfecta are multi systemic.

having eds or another connective tissue disorder is SO much more than just some flexibility and it's especially frustrated that they're often thought of solely in relation to that one aspect of them because it leads a lot of people down the path of misdiagnosis.

as an advocate and educator regarding ctds and especially eds, i have spoken to SO many people who simply wrote the possibility of them having a ctd like ehlers-danlos off simply because they aren't flexible. it's such a dangerous misconception and really frustrating to see especially given the fact that the muscles of hypermobile people often overcompensate to make up for joint laxity, which can actually lead to a lack of flexibility/high tone/spasticity

so yeah, tl;dr: if you have a bunch of multisystemic symptoms that seem largely unconnected, look into connective tissue disorders. they're much more common than people think, frequently go under the radar, and can really wreck havoc on your body - ESPECIALLY when you aren't aware that you have one

The rise of doctors describing functional or psychogenic symptoms as "not real" symptoms should genuinely disturb everyone.

It harms those with functional/psychogenic symptoms, because yes, the symptoms are real, regardless of a lack of organic cause. They aren't lying or faking them, they're just not organic in nature.

And even if you don't give a shit about individuals with those types of symptoms (you should), it should still worry you if you're disabled, especially if you're a part of another marginalised group (especially women tbh). You're more likely to be assumed to have functional/psychogenic symptoms, and if doctors believe you do, they won't test for other stuff, or only do very basic tests. Like having any kind of functional/psychogenic diagnosis or suspected diagnosis on your records will hinder any other attempts to seek medical help because everything gets blamed on that, even if (like me!) you have proof that there's other stuff going on (eg positive test results). This means that you can be very definitely physically organically ill, and still be refused tests and treatments based on assumptions.

And then when those symptoms get labelled as "not real"...well, suddenly those with functional/psychogenic problems are basically being called liars, fakers, etc, and can't get the help they need to a, recover/improve, and b, get the support they need whilst/when they have symptoms. (And hey, guess what, if you have neither of those things, you're not gonna get better and may in fact get worse!) And those who've just been assumed to have them are going to get labelled increasingly as liars and fakers as they get increasingly sicker from the "not real" symptoms, risking long term damage from the "not real" symptoms.

(Post inspired by a conference I went to in which an actual doctor stood up in front of hundreds of people and described how it's hard to tell if a teenage girl with anxiety has real stomach pain or not. Because if your stomach hurts from anxiety, it's actually fake, the pain doesn't exist I guess.)

Reading comprehension site. As far as I understand it, your point is moreso that often stories set in a world without homophobia, transportation, etc. Are treated as morally better. Meanwhile stories which are parallel to real world queerness, identity, and oppression are often viewed negatively. Mostly because there's a standing idea of "you could have made it better by simply not including the homophobia and transphobia".

In my mind, both are morally equivalent, and both are examining themes which may be interesting in the context of queer experiences and liberation.

yeah that's exactly what I'm talking about... I'm basically just arguing against that more extreme mindset you sometimes see around queernorm stuff and pointing out that maybe it's not great to implicitly lump stuff like, say, steven universe, queer as folk, and i saw the tv glow together as the 'lesser' or "more harmful" type of work we should seek to avoid because they focus on queer struggles, or otherwise downplaying the value of themes that aren't like, escapist enough in some way.

Honestly I think at some point the discussion around depictions of homophobia- specifically, criticism aimed at the thought that (often quite fetishistic) homophobia (or sexism, racism, etc) needed to exist in fantasy for the sake of "historical realism", and of bury your gays-type stuff - sort of got telephone game'd into "it's weird to depict bigotry or gay characters suffering/dying when you could just not do that; no one wants to see that" and then in turn "the best, most valuable and desired way to depict queerness (race, disability, gender, etc) is to make it normal and as downplayed as possible" and i think it's worth pointing out that that's often not great advice/a good metric for judging queer fiction overall.

Once steve becomes bigger on tiktok (via corroded coffin and Eddie), he becomes more easily recognized in public, but only in the metal scene. The parents of his students still know him as Mr. Harrington, the brightly colored and happy-go-lucky kindergarten teacher that their kids love.

But fans of corroded coffin either love or hate Steve. Steve (obviously) doesn’t care because he knows that him and Eddie are in love and that’s all that matters to him. Plus, he’s not on social media so it doesn’t affect him personally.

At one of Eddie’s shows, during a quiet moment, Steve’s dexcom beeps and interrupts the moment of silence that the band was trying to create. The cc boys don’t think anything of it, but the person standing next to Steve in the crowd shoots him a dirty look.

Thinking nothing of it, Steve, in his baby blue sweater, takes out his omnipod and checks his levels in order to see how he can problem solve. His blood sugar was higher than usual thanks to the large Dr. Pepper he had earlier, so all he had to do was a correction. Nothing crazy.

But the man next to him thought this was atrocious. He nudges Steve and says, “Turn off your fucking phone, it’s disrespectful.”

Steve looks at him and furrows his brows and just shakes his head.

This leads to the guy punching Steve square in the face, which sets off a chain reaction of a mosh pit occurring with Steve desperately trying to move to the sidelines.

The band stops and Eddie jumps off the stage, pushing his way through the crowd to get to Steve, while many of the others begin to rag on the man that instigated everything.

Eddie grabs Steve by the arm and throws him over his shoulder— a moment of strength that will have him complaining about in the morning— and makes his way back to the stage to deposit Steve there.

“Are you okay, baby? You took a hard hit, there.” Eddie is lightly touching Steve’s face and checking for any signs of swelling or lacerations.

Steve just laughs and points over Eddie’s shoulder, saying, “You should see the other guy.”

Eddie turns and the guy is barely standing; one guy is holding him up while a huge woman is repeatedly kicking him.

The next day, the whole event blows up on every social media platform with people defending Steve left and right. The hashtag #WeStandWithSteve is trending on twitter and the video of the whole incident is plastered everywhere.

The “normies” may not recognize Steve, but the metal community and Corroded Coffin’s fan base sure do. And they’ve proved that he is worth defending.

the dynamic of demigods thinking which other demigod is the most powerful is always amusing to me because. like, we know the big 3 kids are all the most powerful. That's just a fact of their universe. And then we know nearly every character views Percy as the strongest demigod, and most people are very rightfully intimidated by him.

and you look at the powers of the Big 3 kids and there's Percy, but then you realize Nico is just kind of objectively more powerful than him but simply chooses to hang out in Percy's shadow like he's Percy's scary dog privileges. Like, the two of them are pretty equally capable of causing multiple different apocalypses. Nico just also has like four different instakill powers and it's not like he doesn't use them. He very much uses them! Not infrequently, even! And they don't seem to take a significant amount of energy from him! And other demigods are pretty intimidated by both of them! But Nico makes a conscious point to keep his cards close to his chest and not let on exactly how dangerous and scary he can be if he wants to. People are already scared enough of him without knowing anything about him and he doesn't like that. Percy doesn't think about that nearly as much, and so usually just goes in guns blazing and that's part of why he's considered a wildcard. And then Nico himself puts Percy on a pedestal, so those who do know more about Nico's abilities then presume Nico knows something they don't about Percy that implies Percy is even stronger than him.

And even on a meta level Nico's narrative role requires him to be functionally more powerful than Percy, because he very often serves the purpose of getting Percy out of situations he can't handle on his own. That's just part of his function as a character! But also narratively he can't overshadow Percy so he just takes a backseat of his own accord and that's very amusing to me.
