Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Do Now:

Students pick one random country using the Random Country Picker from pickerwheel.com, then go to Wikipedia and search "geography of [country]", and record their assigned country's area in square kilometers.

Class Discussion:

Ensure all students successfully found their country's area. Discuss ideas of how cartographers may have figured out their country's area.

Modeled Learning:

Pick a country at random on the SmartBoard, then pull up en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography_of_[country] .

Show how to trace over the country using paper, ruler, and pencil.

When doing so, make it clear that the goal of today's activity is to draw an overly simplified polygon, like the France hexagon example in the first response to this post.

Show how to use the scale provided on the map (which should be on every country found this way) in order to measure the side lengths of the superimposed polygon

Use the side lengths to calculate the area of the polygon.

Calculate the difference between the area of the polygon and the official area of the country.

Draw a more refined polygon, like @vang0bus did, and show how to break this down into simpler polygons (such as triangles and trapezoids), in order to recalculate the area. How much closer is this method to the official area of the country?

Higher Order Learning:

Students perform the activity that you modeled. If they finish with time remaining, encourage them to keep on refining the polygon to get as close to the official area as possible.

one of my favorite subtle implications in the series is that it seems the Titan Army was fully banking on Percy being the host of Kronos. Why else would they make their main base a cruise ship if their primary enemy is a son of Poseidon? Named after Andromeda, the wife of Perseus? Why would they work on Oceanus specifically being free so much? Side notably with other children of Poseidon? Why plant Zeus and Hades' items of power on Percy when Luke already had them? Why only Zeus and Hades' items, not Poseidon's? Well because they really need Percy as Kronos' host, that's why. (and Poseidon siding with them because of that would be a bonus as well)

I like to imagine Luke's cabin on the Princess Andromeda is fully decked out with like "WELCOME PERCY" and sea-themed sheets and everything and he hates it so much cause it's a constant reminder he failed and he was Kronos' second choice. Also then he gets his super special pegasus not even exactly stolen by Percy, but the pegasus willingly defects to be Percy's personal steed instead, which must just be insult to injury. Luke has immense one-sided beef with Percy and Percy has no idea.

au where everything is the same except mabel and dipper have been going to gravity falls every year before the show takes place since like kindergarten.

its a pretty simple premise that derives mostly from my desire to explore interpersonal relationships and the ways a place and people can change from a young child’s point of view. it doesn’t change canon that much either, admittedly, i just wanted to draw childhood friends stuff LOL. ill call it uhhhhhhhh every summer au.
