— Recent giant anteater sightings in Rio Grande do Sul state indicate the species has returned to southern Brazil, where it had been considered extinct for more than a century.
— Experts concluded that the giant anteater ventured across the border from the Iberá Park in northeastern Argentina where a rewilding project has released around 110 individuals back into the habitat.
— The sightings emphasize the importance of rewilding projects, both to restore animal populations in specific regions and help ecosystems farther afield.
— Organizations across Brazil are working to protect and maintain current giant anteater populations, including rallying for safer highways to prevent wildlife-vehicle collisions that cause local extinctions.
Playing back hours of footage from a camera trap set in Espinilho State Park in the south of Brazil in August 2023, Fábio Mazim and his team banked on possible sightings of the maned wolf or the Pantanal deer and had their fingers crossed for a glimpse of a Pampas cat (Leopardus pajeros), one of the most threatened felines in the world.
What they didn’t expect to see was an animal long presumed extinct in the region. To their surprise, the unmistakable long snout and bushy tail of a giant anteater ambled into shot.
"We shouted and cried when we saw it,” the ecologist from the nonprofit Pró-Carnívoros Institute told Mongabay. “It took a few days to grasp the importance of this record. A sighting of a giant anteater was never, ever expected.”
Last seen alive in the southwest of the Rio Grande do Sul state in 1890, the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) has since been spotted 11 times since August 2023, although the scientists are unsure whether it’s the same one or different individuals. However, the sightings confirm one clear fact: The giant anteater is back.
It's a huge win for the environment. Giant anteaters play an important role in their ecosystems, helping to control insect numbers, create watering holes through digging and are prey for big cats such as jaguars and pumas.
The habitat of the giant anteater stretches from Central America toward the south cone of Latin America.
Its conservation status is “vulnerable,” although it is considered extinct in several countries, including El Salvador, Guatemala and Uruguay, as well as specific regions such as the states of Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, Santa Catarina and (until now) Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil and the Cordoba and Entre Rios regions in Argentina.
‍In the last six months, the giant anteater was spotted on camera 11 times in the Espinilho State Park in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. It was the first time in 130 years that the species has been seen alive there.
Yet not only is it a triumph for conservationists to see these animals returning to Brazilian biomes, it’s also a surprising mark of success for a rewilding program about 150 kilometers (93 miles) away in neighboring Argentina.
Tumblr media
‍Rewilding Argentina’s biomes
‍Iberá National Park in Corrientes province in northeastern Argentina is a 758,000-hectare (1.9 million-acre) expanse of protected land comprising a part of the Iberá wetlands with its swaths of grasslands, marshes, lagoons and forests. The region was once home to just a handful of giant anteaters after habitat loss, hunting and vehicle collisions decimated the population.
Since 2007, the NGO Rewilding Argentina, an offspring of the nonprofit Tompkins Conservation, has been reintroducing the species back to the area, most individuals being orphaned pups rescued from vehicle collisions or poaching.
So far, they have released 110 giant anteaters back into the wild. Nowadays, several generations inhabit the park, transforming it from “a place of massive defaunation to abundance,” Sebastián Di Martino, director of conservation for Rewilding Argentina, was quoted as saying in an official statement.
The project has been so successful that the giant anteaters appear to be venturing farther afield and moving to new territories beyond national borders, such as Espinilho State Park in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul region...
Experts now hope that a giant anteater population can reestablish itself naturally in Espinilho State Park without the need for human intervention.
“The giant anteater returning to Rio Grande do Sul shows the success of the work done in Argentina and how it’s viable, possible and important to do rewilding and fauna reintroduction projects,” Mazim said. “It is also an indication that the management of conservation units and also the agricultural areas of the ecosystems are working,” he added. “Because if large mammals are coming from one region and settling in another, it is because there is a support capacity for them. It is an indication of the health of the environment.”

Travelodge, 2830 S. Las Vegas Blvd – 1958.
Oldest rooms on the Strip.
Ted Griss owned the land when the motel was built. The Travelodge Corp. had a management formula whereby the corp. designed, financed, constructed, and equipped each new Travelodge project, then entered into a partnership with a couple of family who then became the managing partners. Co-owners of this Travelodge were Laura Belle and Maxwell Kelch (Las Vegas promotions pioneer) with Lois and James E. Zurcher, and Opal and J.H. Tompkins. The Kelch family were still owners in the late 70s. Ted Griss' widow Agnes Griss sold the land in the 70s. It has sold several times since then with the motel operating on a lease.
The motel broke ground in Fall '57 and opened either late that year or early 1958.
The motel was involved in one of the oldest unsolved murder cases in Clark County. On 2/4/59, 45-year old motel clerk Evelyn Grace Shank was abducted from the motel during an apparent robbery gone wrong. She was found killed near Blue Diamond.
And a birth. “I was born in this hotel in ‘72, given up for adoption and it’s listed as my place of birth ... Not too many born ‘on the Strip’” -Theresa Kozak Cohagen.

Directly linked to the failure of the war effort was the idea that after Philippa’s death Edward III descended into a second youth. [...]
Philippa was central to Edward’s assumption of his adult kingship. Her coronation in February 1330 and the birth of Edward of Woodstock later the same year allowed Edward at the age of seventeen to break from his controversial mother and her lover and assert his own, independent royal family as a husband, father and a man. Philippa and his family, therefore, formed the foundation of his adult reign and they continued to be at the heart of kingship throughout his reign. [...]
In contrast, Edward’s relationship with Alice had the opposite effect. Their lustful affair had all the connotations of a youthful dalliance. This youthfulness was reinforced by Edward’s inability to demonstrate his manly vigour either on the battlefield or by proxy through the success of his armies in the field. More than anything, the lapse in Edward’s moral strength of character to conquer his passions for Alice meant that he was perceived as lacking the strength of character to perform wise, consistent, just and manly kingship needed to rule effectively. Instead his behaviour was that of a boy, indulgent, weak willed and inconsistent, prone to flattery and ruled by inappropriate council.
Moreover, this was much worse in an older man because while a youth could grow into a man, for a man to change into a youth went against the natural order of life. Thus, Edward was transformed from the hero of Crécy and Poitiers to the stock literary character of a pathetic old man infatuated and distracted by a young temptress, such as in the king in Chaucer’s Merchant’s Tale. Walsingham crystallises this image of a senile old king by declaring Edward’s relationship with her as a form of madness, as ‘a lecherous youth sins, but a lecherous old man is insane’.
This image of a pathetic old man driven only by his own desires and those of his mistress played a large part in the perception that Edward III was conquered by his love for Alice and was therefore the subordinate partner in their relationship. In addition to his comment that it is unnatural that ‘a woman should rule the land and should subject the king to serve her in the Mirour de l’Omme, Gower recalls a story in the bible of a king who asked four of his courtiers what was the fullest strength. The second of these responded:
That women are stronger than him [the king]; Because women know how to subjugate the king; We see an example of this everyday, Many a king is in this great malady, For hardly anyone knows how to protect himself.
In similar terms, Walsingham declared that the king should be considered a slave rather than a lord when he allows himself to be commanded by such a shameless woman. Therefore, whereas Edward III’s marriage to Philippa made his kingship complete and proved him to be a man ready to rule his kingdom, inversely the death of his queen and his indulgence of a younger mistress projected the image of a frivolous king, enjoying a lustful second youth and the inability to govern that went with it.

Blake Shelton returns with ‘ For Recreational Use Only’ - The Music Universe
The project makes his first with BBR Music Group
After nearly four years since his last studio album, Blake Shelton is back with For Recreational Use Only, his highly anticipated debut for BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville, set for release May 9th.
Leading the charge is the Top 10 hit single “Texas,” which has already resonated with fans and country radio alike.
“It’s been a long time since we had a new album out, and I want to thank the songwriters and musicians who helped bring this record to life,” states Shelton. “Scott [Hendricks] and I have been working on this music for years, and I’m beyond excited to finally share it with the fans.”
The song “Let Him In Anyway,” available now, offers another powerful preview of the album. The emotionally gripping ballad tells the story of a man hoping for divine forgiveness for a lost friend who was just shy of redemption.
“‘Let Him In Anyway’ is one of the most powerful songs I’ve ever had the chance to record,” adds Shelton. “Hardy is a co-writer and a friend, and I’ve never heard a song like this before. When I first listened to it, I knew it was something special. It’s an honor to bring it to life, and I’m incredibly proud of the record we made.”
Spanning 12 tracks, For Recreational Use Only captures life’s highs and lows with authentic storytelling, raw emotion and unforgettable melodies. The album also features special guest appearances from superstar Gwen Stefani, country legend John Anderson and longtime friend and tourmate Craig Morgan.
Currently on the road with his sold-out Friends & Heroes Tour, Shelton is joined by an all-star lineup, including Craig Morgan, Deana Carter, Trace Adkins and Emily Ann Roberts. The tour is more than just a concert—it’s a magical, multigenerational celebration of country music, bringing together legendary voices and rising stars for an unforgettable night of music and storytelling.

101 Productivity Tips (to get the important things done at work) (2017) by Claire Tompkins
‘It’s going to work out much better if you incorporate changes slowly and make them your own.’
‘The more clearly you define what your work is, the easier  it is to see which details are important and not allow  them to fall through the cracks.’
‘Understanding why you are doing something makes it easier to think of alternative ways to get the same result.’
‘…understand your natural energy patterns and preferred styles. Work with yourself, not against yourself.’
‘When an activity is not routine, you’re more likely to think up reasons not to do it. Routines circumvent that thought process.’
‘Change something, anything…can help you see the familiar in a different way; the essence of objectivity.’
‘The most moral activity of all is the creation of space for life to move around.’ – Robert M. Pirsig
‘Break your project down into steps. Now, divide the steps into even smaller pieces. Keep dividing until you get to a piece small enough that it seems easy to do. Then do just that piece.’
‘Specific planning helps you visualize better what you’ll do. That makes it real…’
‘Things change; you can count on that.’
‘Bring your plans out of your head and into physical reality. You are more likely to take them seriously that way.’
‘Lists are critical to keep track of what you’re up to and what to do next. Don’t let this information stay in your head, where it’s vague and unformed.’

Interestingly, we actually were girls together... When I met Jo I was 18 years and 11 months old, and had just emerged from my house for the first time in 3 months— straight to school in New York. We were shockingly vulnerable in a really simple 101 Writing class. We spent much of our time in cafes and academic buildings dissecting and chipping away at our Didion imitations until we pretended to 'find' some sort of voice at the end of the semester (how timely!). She towered above me, and coaxed a part of me I thought was shut away for good in a house in Oklahoma City. I felt really comfortable. She celebrated my birthday with me after knowing me for a week. We'd speed through SoHo, two of my strides to one of hers, and I always thought she looked cool with a cigarette in hand though it wasn't anything I was smoking at the time. Her suitcase remained empty with 20 minutes till departure, and we barely missed a bus down to DC. She got us new tickets and against her stature leaned all the way down onto my shoulder for the 5-hour ride, and we split at Union Station. She went off to visit a friend at some DC school and I was seeing family. We reconnected at the end of the week, where those cheap buses meet up, and went back home to New York.
When we were sent home, we sent letters across the Midwest in riveting exchanges between Oklahoma and Illinois. We scrawled bits of forgotten writing projects onto paper and wrote to each other often. Radio silence for a while, and we were back nine months later. She was living with her best friend at the time. It wasn't me. Their sublease was really gorgeous. The energy was funny. They stopped being friends after the lease ran out. I last saw her on my 21st birthday in Tompkins with a slice of cheesecake. Late as usual.
Two years of radio silence. I texted her for some reason in April 2023 and we chatted briefly. Nothing again. She's always been in New York, though. I knew her face really well. I superimposed it onto strangers in the crowd. I knew she was here, somewhere.
That summer I felt another friendship dying. I went home exhausted and sweaty and annoyed. No seats on the subway but a space near a familiar face. I was glad she recognized me. I was afraid she wouldn't. She was to transfer at one stop. I told her I'd be on the train for another hour getting to the outer reaches of Queens. "Safe travels," and I let the subway car population dwindle before weeping. Nothing again. Maybe I was afraid to reach out myself because I didn't have anything to say (<- symptom of being frozen by anxiety for 2 years).
And then something this past week. I waited 12 minutes to reply. I missed the person I used to be so severely and was deadly curious about her. I was embarrassed about our run-in on the train. I sweat so badly I had pit stains on a plain, over-sized shirt (symbolism) and she was in business casual workwear. It felt awfully on-the-nose about my perception of my own life and disappointment in myself. I didn't text her because I didn't want to think about it. But she texted me. Our old writing professor from that very class where we met mentioned me, thus prompting the text. She told me on the phone that she thinks often about a thing I used to say (an Andrea original?!) about Jaywalking with the new mothers because no car would run over a baby in a stroller (😭). A saying which attaches a smile to every crosswalk. And remember she's been in New York this entire time. Couldn't help but cry about it. She regaled me on everything. Seems we've been lonely the same past 6 months. I wish we had each other then. I wish she could've seen the joyful moments. I actually don't know if you'd like her, and I think Winnie has a thing about Jo 'cause she unfollowed her on IG a while back (we were all in that same writing class and we are all deeply unwell lmfao⚠️) but I do consider her a great influence on the Andrea you ended up meeting two years ago, if that's worth something at all. At the very least it'd be funny? I'll make it happen. She's in Bushwick now actually.
Anyway everything's a missed bus to DC and every good thing in life is being that uncomfortable shoulder to lean down and cry on. Likewise, the security I felt knowing she could always casually pick things back up and move forward is something that could pull me out of the tar pit. We have suffered apart and alone long enough.

TOP 3 Metal Albums I Enjoyed from 2023
A lot of great metal came out this year and it was hard to narrow it down to my Top 3. There were some great EPs released this year— Spiritbox’s The Fear of Fear, Brand of Sacrifice’s Between Death and Dreams and Knosis’s The Eternal Doom among them. Singles I enjoyed include: "On the Verge" by thrown, “Masterpiece” by The Anchor, “Enemy” by The Gentle Men (ft. Andy Cizek), “Weight of the World” by Harper (ft. We Came as Romans and Brand of Sacrifice), “Viking” by Slaughter To Prevail, "III" by DEATHPHONK (Nik Nocturnal's weird project); and Knocked Loose had the double, “Deep In the Willow/“Everything is Quiet Now”.
My Top 5 honourable mentions: 5. [m]other by Veil of Maya, their newest does everything I want it to do, good riffs, cool effects, great vocals; 4. Soul Elegy by Termina, Nik Nocturna, Andy Cizek and friends deliver an awesome metal album; 3. Chaos Horrific by Cannibal Corpse is a strong entry and shows why they're still so loved after so long; 2. The Fox and the Bird by Ok Goodnight mixes folk, rock, metal and whatever else they want to create this really entrancing album; and 1. Take Me Back to Eden by Sleep Token is one of the albums I listened to the most because it's easy to put on when you're tired of being relentlessly pummelled by deathcore, but though its highs are super high, it just misses out landing on my top 3 because there are a few spots it lags
3. ...And Everything In Between - Unprocessed
Manuel Gardner Fernandes has quickly become one of my favourite guitarists between this release and Unprocessed's previous album Gold. The combination of styles on this album exemplify modern metal: bludgeoning heaviness, thumpy prog riffing (à la Animals As Leaders or Polyphia) and a mix of harsh and clean vocals. Despite the polish of these 9 tracks, some express such raw emotion and a ferocity that they really get me hyped up. The variety of tones and vocals kept me engaged throughout, and they blend and balance heaviness and melody so well. The guitar sounds so angry sometimes–especially the part of "Thrash" where Manuel beats the shit outta his guitar after screaming, "But you're just a fucking lie!" I love that. Other songs like "Blackbone" and "Die on the Cross of the Martyr" continue the trend of excellent instrumentation, the latter featuring guest solos by Polyphia's Tim Henson and Scottie Lepage. It's so well done and so engaging. In the short time I've had this album, it's become one of my favourites of 2023.
2. Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre - Periphery
When Periphery released "Wildfire" as a single I immediately bought into what they were selling. The way they transition through the various parts is seamless, the mix of vocal techniques and the jazzy interlude are all fantastic. It really captures the spirit of the whole record. Songs like "Dying Star" and "Zagreus" are also so hard. Periphery continues to show off their musical dexterity, and the band members prove once again they're not only some of the best musicians djenting their way through the world but as a collective they add up to more than the sum of their parts. My hottest take when it comes to this album is that I love "Silhouette" — it's like if you ran 80s soft rock and 90s/00s boy bands through a progressive music filter. I think they wrote this song and put it on the album just to prove they can do anything. And if Periphery is Djent, and Djent isn't a genre then why shouldn't they go in every genre direction they want to explore?
1. War of Being - TesseracT
In other years this top 3 could have been entirely deathcore or melodeath or metalcore, but this year it was djenty prog metal through and through. It's the music I gravitated to the most this year and nobody did it better than TesseracT. Daniel Tompkins vocals are incredible throughout, his cleans sounding particularly great on "Echoes" – giving us one of the best choruses before following it up with another great one on "The Grey". The album offers engaging lyricism throughout and the instrumentation is at a pedigree one would expect for a band in the vanguard of this genre. The album gives us atmospheric moments, synths, meditative passages before blasting us with metal. In many ways the whole album does what the best tracks on Sleep Token's Take Me Back To Eden do. Each song and the album as a whole provide an expansive experience. And that's why it's my number one. More than any other album released this year, TesseracT's War of Being makes me want to sit down and listen to it from beginning to end.
Other great albums: SUPERBLOOM by Silent Planet; Fatalism by Polaris; Feral by Left To Suffer; Foregone by In Flames; Ashen by Humanity's Last Breath; The Sin of Human Frailty by END; Symptoms of Survival by Dying Wish; and The Death We Seek by Currents.

Yeast ferments, gelatin jiggles, drugs and alcohol froth and bubble, and flesh from animals and plants actively molds and rots. These materials morph through multiple states and phases, and their movement is imbued with a liveliness that is suggestive of volition. Deviant Matter examines four aesthetic and material categories— gelatinousness, fermentation, putrefaction, and intoxication—to theorize how the modern state seeks to manage deviant populations across multiple scales, from the level of the single cell up to the affective and aesthetic imperatives of the state and its bureaucratic projects. Kyla Wazana Tompkins deploys a new materialist engagement with the history of race and queer life, making an argument for queer of color method as political and disciplinary critique. Deviant Matter delves into a vast archive that includes nineteenth-century medical and scientific writing; newspaper comic strips and early film; the Food and Drug Act of 1906; the literature of Martin Delany, Louisa May Alcott and Herman Melville; and twenty-first century queer minoritarian video, installation, and performance art. Drawing from the genealogy of Black feminist and queer of color critique, in Deviant Matter rot, jelly, ferment and intoxicating materials serve as figures for thinking about how matter, art, politics, and affect can be read across multiple scales, ranging from the intimate and molecular everyday to the vast print production and inner workings of the state. Tompkins demonstrates that we are moved by our encounters with the materials in Deviant Matter, producing feelings and sensations that she links to a system of social value where these sensations come to be understood as productive, exciting, disgusting, intoxicating, or even hallucinatory. Moving through multiple states and phase changes, falling apart and reforming again, ferment, rot, intoxicants and jelly energize and choreograph both themselves and human behavior. At the same time, these materialities come to signify exactly those populations whose energy escapes the extractive efforts of capitalism and the state.
My workmate is gonna ask our rep for an advanced reader of this for me I'm sooooooooo excited!!!!!!

So one of my moots dropped a general question about voice claims for OCs, and it got me thinking - who would voice all the characters I’ve created/designed this year for a hypothetical animated adaptation of Helena (main OC)’s, story? Here are my thoughts so far (in order):
-Lzzy Hale as Helena Gorton (main character - runs her own dental practice and plays in a metallic hardcore band in San Francisco)
-Cree Summer as Aja Harrison (Helena’s best friend, who is also a jazz trumpeter, dental assistant at a rival dental practice, and makes jewelry as a side hustle)
-Steven Yeun as Herman Liong (Helena’s dental assistant)
- Paul F. Tompkins as John Gorton (Helena’s fiancée and captain of a commercial fishing boat)
-Idris Elba as [krɔːliːʃ reʒiaɹ] (Helena’s dad and king of the isolated kingdom of bipedal merpeople from which Helena escaped)
-Tilda Swinton as [krɔːliːʃə ru:ʒɑɪə] (Helena’s mom and queen of the isolated kingdom of bipedal merpeople from which Helena escaped)
-Kaley Cuoco as Lina Gibson (Berkeley, CA-based fashion journalist and Aja’s friend)
-Elliot Page as Jim Dimbeaux (Aja’s coworker and friend who is an enby goth)
There are other characters in the story (and who have yet to be featured) who will eventually have designs, and I will make further voice claims as I design/introduce them. More images in part 2 of this post. Stay tuned for this and further projects, including some video game themed fanart. Until next time, peace, love, mermaids, and big robots! ✌️❤️🧜‍♀️🤖
