Hair: 101 What do I do with this mop??
So, you've decided to convert to the dark side. Or maybe you just want the hairstyle- who knows. But here's where to start.
In this post there step by step instructions on:
Haircuts and styles.
How to style your hair.
Guidance on dye.
Haircare.
There's more. You name it, its here. Lets get to it. ───────────────────────
Step 1: Haircut. For the love of whatever you believe in, do not cut it yourself if you don't know what you're doing.
Find a salon you trust. I always go to this one barber shop near my house, the girl who does my hair has good reviews, she's both a hairdresser and a barber- and overall just knows what the heck she's doing. Finding a salon/barber shop you trust is crucial about getting the results you're after. Good haircuts can range from $25-$60 depending on what you're looking to do and how drastic of a change you're making. How can I trust a shop?? Check for reviews, word of mouth or check if they have a social media page to see what they're about and what they've done in the past. Or find someone who specializes in certain styles.
Tip!: One of my red flags is that the place doesn't take card in this day and age.
Figure out which side you want your hair to cover. There's a little trick to figure out which side is the best to have covered; - Make a triangle with your fingers and hold it roughly half an arms length from your face. - With both eyes open, centre something across the room from you inside of that triangle. - Close one eye, then the other. - Which eye keeps that item inside of the triangle? That's your dominant eye. That's the one you'll keep uncovered. -
Reference images. Check out Pinterest, Google- the ways to get images are endless. Check around the web and gather yourself up a whole board of front, side and back images of what you want your hair to look like. I got an entire board before I trusted anyone to touch my hair. Keep in mind your hair length, type and maintenance it would take to keep that haircut as it is.
Tip!: Search for things like emo hair, emo haircut, emo hairstyles, 2000s hairstyles and whack your gender on the end of it.
Ask for specifics. You've found yourself a salon, gathered up a whole range of reference images- cool. What you're gonna do is show them your reference board, your camera roll- whatever you saved your images to. Verbally ask for things like choppy layers or just layers, side-swept bangs, 'emo/scene hair', the tellum cut, that kind of stuff. Show them how you part your hair and what side you sweep that mop to.
Fingers crossed you've gotten what you're looking for x
───────────────────────
HELP!1! You got a botched haircut? Don't stress it, I've had my fair share of those.
Worst comes to worst?
Step 1.5: Haircut, the DIY style. Let's try to fix this the best way we can- or just save cash cutting your hair yourself.
What you need: - Scissors, the hair cutting kind. - Thinning sheers. - Eyebrow or a face razor. - Spray bottle. - A towel. - Protection against angry parents.
Wet your hair. Never cut your hair dry, it always ends up choppy and never lays right- not in the good way. Plus, natural hair has some spring to it. Especially considering you're more than likely looking into straightening it later on. I'm not talking a little damp, I mean full on drenched- but not dripping. -
Grab your tools. Get everything ready and set out. Clip a towel over your shoulders to avoid the hair falling onto your clothing. Stand in front of the mirror and make sure you have one for the back of your head too.| You can buy hair cutting tools from places like Kmart, Target or even supermarkets and drugstores. -
Get your references. Make sure to grab up your wall of references- look at those as much as possible when cutting your hair. That means back, front, sides- bangs. -
Section your hair. Clip your sections off and get to cutting. Cut slow, don't take too much off. You can always cut more off but you can't exactly stick it back on when you fuck up.
Tip!: Use clips to section off hair to make it easier to see what you have and haven't done.
Snippy snippy. Use your scissors to cut off larger chunks of hair, thin out the ends using the sheers- light handed. Your razor is used to taper in the edges of your hair for those layers, make sure you stick to small sections. Even out the sides of your hair, the parts that lay before your ears. They're meant to have a tiered layer look to them that ends in a spike. Cut your ends by pulling them out to the side of your head so you can see them from the front, do the same as you did before with your sides. Bangs is up to you and how you style them. Chuck some layers throughout your hair, they don't have to be perfect, just to add a bit of texture and shag. -
Clean up. If all went well- clean up the evidence, use a hair dryer to blow off the hair onto the floor and vacuum/sweep it all up.
If you mess up, don't panic. Hair grows back- beanies were invented for a reason.
───────────────────────
Step 2: Dye time. Though optional, it's fun to explore. For this one, you don't need to go to a salon. You can do it at home and I prefer it that way to always get the results I'm looking for.
What you need: - Box dye. - A dark towel (black is best). - Vaseline. - Wipes. - Gloves.
Find some dye. Take a trip to your nearest supermarket or drugstore. Aim for cruelty free brands, avoid dyes with harsh chemicals to prevent hair damage and don't skimp out on the cost. Cheap dye can really damage your hair. I've learnt the hard way after dying my hair black for about two years now. -
Protect your skin (and your countertops). Slather some Vaseline over your ears, head, neck- wherever you think the dye may touch on your skin. It creates a barrier and trust me, black is super hard to get off of your skin. Opt for darker surfaces or sinks when dying your hair a vivid bright or pitch black- stay away from manic panic! That shit stains EVERYTHING. Most dye kits come with gloves, but it wouldn't hurt investing in some that actually fit you- or you could be chaotic and go in bare-handed. Do a patch test before dying your full head, trust me. As someone with sensitive skin- you don't want an allergic reaction on your scalp. -
Get to it. Follow the instructions on the packet. Dye your full head or just some- it's up to you. I would opt for cooler or even just cold water when you rinse your dye out, I've found it sets the colour better, makes it stick longer and fades less quickly. -
Aftercare. Make sure your hair is conditioned well and not brushed when wet to avoid damage. Some dyes come with aftercare conditioner- if not? Just slap some coconut oil on and call it a day.
Tip!: Grab a root cover spray in the same colour that you got your box dye in so you don't have to dye your hair as often- especially since black is a shit to maintain.
───────────────────────
Step 3: Wash and care. How do you take care of your hair and keep it nourished? Follow my routine as a guide below.
What you need: - Shampoo. - Conditioner. - Hair mask (optional). - Coconut oil. - Leave in conditioner/serum.
Scalp oil. Once a week, if your hair gets dry, get some coconut oil and lather it on your scalp. Rosemary, almond and jojoba all work too, but I've found coconut works best for my hair. Leave the oil sitting from anywhere between 5-20 minutes. -
Shampoo. Get some shampoo, argan oil from Herbal Essences is my personal favourite, literally gets all the nasty from my hair and leaves it so shiny. I don't always double cleanse my hair since I tend to wash it every 2-3 days.
Tip!: Younger people (between 12-21) need to wash their hair more often because of their oil glands. - Oily hair? Wash every 1-3 days. - Dry scalp? You may be washing too much. cut back to 4-7 days. - Bleached hair? Wash once a week to avoid damage.
Shampoo again. The first lot of shampoo was to clean off any of the excess dirt and oils in your hair, this one is more of a deep cleanse. I would recommend getting a scalp scrubber and getting in there during this shampoo. -
Condition. I use the matching conditioner from Herbal Essences, it makes my hair suuuper soft and hydrated. I love it and recommend it to almost everyone. Plus, they're both really affordable. I don't use masks because of this conditioner, but if you want to mask your hair- don't condition on the same day! -
Leave in/serum. I use the Elvive brand, both for serum and leave in. Both because they hydrate my hair really well, leave it fluffy and have heat protectant in them. They don't run me much cost either.
───────────────────────
Step 4: Styling. Want that pin straight perfect hair? Here's how.
What you need: - Hair dryer. - Hair straightener. - Heat protectant. - A thin comb. - Your usual hairbrush. - Hair spray.
Wash and dry. Once you finish the routine above, or even have inspiration for your own- towel dry your hair or air dry it a little bit so its not dripping wet. I toss my hair up in a turban wrap and leave that on for a little while instead of towel drying my hair. -
Protect. Spray or slather some heat protectant on your damp hair to stop it from damaging due to constant heat usage. I like keratin products because they help with damage I might have caused by not protecting my hair earlier. Don't be like me. -
Blow dry. Blow dry your hair on the highest setting until its not so damp anymore, this also helps to straighten out your hair (or it does for me). Flick the heat down one and continue to dry as normal.
Tip!: Don't dry your hair upwards if you want it to lay flat! Dry from the top of your head down.
Straighten. Depending on your hair type, you may need to straighten on a higher setting. I whack mine on medium and run the iron across my bangs and sides mostly, the dryer straightens the back for my hair- though you may need to do your whole head. -
Spray. Cover a brush with some hairspray and comb it through your hair to keep the frizz to a minimum and to make sure it stays straight. For my bangs, I get a thin comb and repeat the process but going underneath it too.

Self Harm. A guide to self help.
This post may be triggering to some.
Cutting, also known as self harm or self injury, can be a heck of a struggle to break- shit, I've been fighting for 5 years and ongoing. You're not alone in this. Let your cool emo older brother help out.
───────────────────────
Information: What is cutting? Why do people do it?
What is self harm? Self-harm is when someone would deliberately hurt their bodies- whether that be cutting, hitting or something of the like. This post is cut focused. -
Why do I do it? People sometimes cut as a way to cope with strong physical or emotional pain, distress, suicidal thoughts or some kind of punishment. But really, there's no 'why' to cover every single reason. It's individualistic. It's valid. Don't ever think you're not. Scientifically, the rush you get from the pain, the adrenaline that's released into your bloodstream- that's why you do it. For that moment of relief, that need to hurt yourself to feel alive or to feel something. -
How can I stop/Why should I stop? It takes time, especially if you're a frequent cutter. Again, that rush you get from pain can be as hard to break as drug or alcohol use. The thing is, this is way more life threatening than those. One wrong slip and you could slit an artery and bleed out in as quick as 5 minutes. Think about that one person that keeps you going- what would they do if they found you covered in a pool of your own blood, motionless, gone from this world. What would they say? Think about the panic of you running up to your parents after hiding it for so long, gushing out and begging for them to call an ambulance because you don't want to die? Morbid. I know. But those are thoughts that keep me up at night, thoughts that allow me to keep pushing back the urge.
Tip!: Baby oil can help reduce the appearance of scars overtime! Massage it into the area once a day and you should start to see fading in a week :)
Think about your reason, write it down. Remember it.
───────────────────────
Cutting Kit: Though I still strongly believe you shouldn't, here's stuff you should keep around for if/when you have a relapse.
Antiseptic. Clean your wounds and keep your items just as clean. Infections can kill you as quick as bleeding out if it gets into your bloodstream. -
Lighter. Run the flame over your blade to get some of the nasties off to prevent infection. This doesn't sterilize your blade, it stops the spread of germs. Never place the hot metal onto your skin though. -
Bandaids & bandages. Cover up fresh wounds and replace bandaids often to stop dirt or germs entering. -
Steri-strips. These help close wounds that may have opened up too much, they aren't stitches but they do the job. -
Wipes. I prefer the cooling kind to calm the sting of the cuts. They're better for cleaning fresh blood than tissues, plus tissues breakdown easier when exposed to liquids- you don't wanna get that stuff in your wound. -
Paper towel/toilet paper. To use when the bleeding has calmed down, press firmly on the wound to soak it up and to help with the blood clotting.
Tip!: If you need to cut, cut on your inner thigh. It’s easier to hide and there’s less chance of hitting a major vein or artery.
───────────────────────
Prevention Methods: What I find helps. Dive into some more methods to help yourself out too.
Rubber band/hair tie. Snapping something against my wrist has helped me hold off for quite some time now. It gives me that pang without permanently scarring my body. -
Exercise. Due to food being one of the main reasons I self harm, exercising helps put my brain at ease with no need for punishment. -
Hobbies. I play guitar, I draw, I write poems or stories, I read. Anything to take my mind off of the reason why I want to cut. -
Calling people. My partner is my go to. I go and piss off my sister too, she makes me laugh. And she's one of the reasons I'm still here. -
Crying. Crying. Crying gets all of my emotions out- sometimes gives me a headache and exhausts me. But hey, at least I didn't relapse. -
Stop, think. Stop and think- why? Why am I about to do this? What could I be doing instead? How can I fix my feelings? -
Put it off. Just put it off for five minutes, see if you feel the same way- rinse and repeat. -
Butterfly. I get my friends to draw on my arms, butterflies or their names specifically. If I cut, I kill the butterflies or I hurt my friends. -
This!! Yep! This blog is one of my methods to avoid hurting myself :)
Tip!: It's better to resist than it is to regret.
───────────────────────
Relapse: What happens if you slip up and relapse.
Don't panic. Things happen, what's been done is done. Breathe, calm down. -
Clean your wounds. Grab out your little kit, clean up the mess and your open cuts. Make sure they're covered so they don't get infected. -
Cry. It's okay to cry, whether its been two days or two years- things happen. Relapses happen. It's not lost progress, think about how much time you were clean for and how much more you can keep trying :) -
Reflect. Why did this happen? Why did you do it? See if you can avoid future situations like this in the future to stay safe.
───────────────────────
If you're in immediate danger, please- call your local emergency number. You're not in this alone <3

LEET: 101 What is L3375934K? How do I understand this jumble!?
Leetspeak, hackspeak or leet- is the switch of a words letters with numbers or special characters. Leet is shortened from the word 'elite', which refers to the hackers who created and used the language in the 1980s.
It was originally created to communicate from person to person through this inside group, often used to disguise and mask illegal content.
To normal readers, taking time to understand the replacement between letters and numbers can be tricky. Below is a simplified guide to each letter and number switch;
───────────────────────
Alphabet (Simplified): The alphabet with number/symbol/letter correspondence. Some numbers are repeated- it just depends on context. I actually hate M,K,W,X and barely use them lol
A | 4 B | 8 C | < D | ) E | 3 F | = G | 6 H | # I | 1 J | _I K | I< L | I_ M | nn N | И O | 0 P | 9 Q | 9 R | 2 S | 5 T | 7 U | V V | \/ W | uu X | >< Y | 7 Z | 2
───────────────────────
Alphabet (Advanced): For all you who want to flex. Just includes a lot more creativity and symbols. Had a ball on my keyboard with this one, and even this isn't the entirety of what was used.
A | 4, /\, @, /-\, ^, Д B | 8, I3, 13, ß, !3, |-] C | <, ¢, {, (, © D | ), |), [), I>, ?, > E | 3, &, £, €, ë, [- F | =, ƒ G | 6, &, C-, <- H | #, /-/, (-), |-|, }{, I+I I | 1, |, ! J | _I, ], ; K | I<, |c, |( L | 1, I_, £ M | nn, /V\, (v), IVI N | И, |\|, /\/, /V O | 0, (), Ø P | 9, I*, ? Q | 9 R | 2, I2 ®, Я S | 5, $, z T | 7, +, † U | V, µ V | \/ W | uu, VV, Ш, \^/ X | ><, ×, )(, Ж Y | 7, Ч Z | 2, s
───────────────────────
Numerical: The numerical setout with letter correspondence. A lot simpler to understand and use daily. I see a lot more of number L337 being used in usernames or around the internet, so its far more common and understood.
1 | I, L 2 | R, Z 3 | E 4 | A 5 | S 6 | G 7 | T, Y 8 | B 9 | P, Q 0 | O

Slang: 101
What do I say? How do I sound 'emo'?
Emo culture has some exclusive terminology, they also have some other phrases that came from the early 2000s. Some you may know and use, some you might have heard and some you may have had no idea about.
Below is a list of words and their meanings to help you out;

Emo Starter Pack What are the basics I need to fit into the subculture??
Now you've versed yourself in the origins, rules- and maybe had some of your questions you've had in your head answered; You'll need some place to start.
This is the post.
Where to start?
Start small. I'm talking from the basics up, but don't worry. I'll hold your hand along the way <3 Here I've listed some MUST have items or must have knowledge if you want to join the scene; categorized for your convenience x.
I've also made sure the three listings in each section are both cost efficient, affordable and accessible for people around the globe.
───────────────────────
Apparel: Apparel: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
Black Skinny Jeans. Like, skinny skinny jeans. Ones that are a size or two too tight. I normally wear a 12/32 (AUS size) but I can size down to an 8/28. I've found female straight jeans two sizes smaller make my legs slim as heck. Get a couple of pairs so you don't have to wait for them to be washed. You can find pairs for as low as $5 thrifted, $25 brand new. -
Tight Shirts. I go for band shirts in a size that hugs my figure and makes me look more boxy, but they can be pricey. Like, $30 for a shirt pricey. Invest in some (about 3-5) plain black shirts from Kmart or Target. They tend to be in the $3-$8 range. -
Converse or Vans. These shoe brands are popular in the scene, especially converse. Hang around for Black Friday/Boxing Day sales or see if you have a DFO (direct factory outlet) near you somewhere, they always have discounted stock. (If you're in the Melbourne area, there's a DFO Converse store above Southern Cross station). Or you might get lucky and thrift a pair ;) keep those eyes peeled. Also check around eBay/online market listings. One pair is fine but I have a good pair and an everyday wear pair. Thrifted shoes tend to be in the $10-$30 range, brand new they can be between $40-$100.
Cost; $35-$200
───────────────────────
Accessories: Accessories: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
Belts. Belts are something that's super prominent in emo fashion- are you even in the scene if you don't have some kind of cool belt? For a first time, I would go for a pyramid studded belt, they're pretty easy to find in metallic, colour and even checkerboard or rainbow. I would start by having look online, they each cost about $10-$25. -
Bracelets. Whether it be kandi bracelets, jelly bracelets or even those silicone band bracelets, something to cover your wrists is a must have in the scene. To start off, I would go for a studded band to match your belt and some silicone bracelets with your fave bands on them. Even better, get your hands on some beads and get to crafting! You can make a custom bracelet to fit anything! Interests, hobbies, music- you name it. It was pretty hard to estimate a cost in this area; Personally I think the $5-$25 range sounds about right. -
Beanies. Beanies are perfect if you're having a bad hair day, your hair isn't laying like you want it to or just really don't have the energy/don't want to style your hair. Grab a few beanies in your favourite colour, or can't go wrong with black. I honestly have way too many beanies and keep wearing this warn down black one because I love it so much xD. They each cost me about $5-$10, grab a few.
Cost; $25-$60
───────────────────────
Makeup: Makeup: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
Black Eyeliner. The eye makeup is the center point of all emo makeup looks. Take a visit to your local supermarket/pharmacy and have a look for gel pen liners. Avoid liquid eyeliners. It can double as eye shadow when you smudge it on your upper/lower lid so you don't even need to think about buying it. My personal favourite is the BYS gel liner pen. It's only $5-$7, lasts me like forever and is vegan/cruelty free! -
Mascara. Mascara works to blend in the line between eyeliner and skin. Especially if you're naturally a blonde like I am. It can also double as something to lightly go over the hairs of your eyebrows and make them a tad darker to match with pitch black hair. The one I've been obsessed with is the Essence 'Call me Queen' mascara. It darkens up my lashes and is super hard to smudge unless you get in there with your finger. And it only costs me about $4-$6. -
Full Coverage Concealer. Concealers can double as a way to even out your skin tone if applied lightly, a way to make you look paler and to hide those eyeliner smudges, black eye shadow fallout or mascara bleeds that may have happened earlier. My go-to concealer has always been ELF. They are a really affordable and popular makeup brand, pretty easy to find anywhere. Make sure to grab one with a matte finish. Their concealers are between $5-$15 depending on the type.
Cost; $15-$30
───────────────────────
Hair: Hair: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
Straightener and Blow dryer. Emos have straight hair, obviously (though I battle against my waves every day). Blow dry your hair when its wet and go over it with your straightener when its dry to get that fluffy blown out and pin straight look. I got my straightener and blow dryer from Kmart for about $20-$30 each, but it's a good investment seeing as they last me literally until they break. -
Heat Protectant. Since I straighten my hair and blow dry it almost every single day, a way to protect your hair from heat is a must have. Especially if you need to bump up the straightener to achieve that 1A hair. I use Elvive, which runs me about $7-$25 a bottle and lasts me months with every day usage. Not to mention, it makes my hair soft- gets rid of my flyaway frizz and protects my hair above everything. -
Coconut Oil. Struggling with heat damage? Hair dry from dying it too much? Slather some coconut oil, the raw kind, all over your hair for a mask and leave it in before washing your hair. It makes my hair super soft and moisturized- no matter what its been through. For a 900g (that's literally close to a litre of oil), it costs me $10. I haven't run out of that jar and it's been over a year.
Cost; $55-$85
───────────────────────
Music: Music: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
My Chemical Romance. One of the most recognizable faces and sounds of emo music. MCR is probably the first band to pop up inside of your head when you think 'emo' or when you search the web for 'emo music'; and it's a great place to start for anyone coming into the scene. With their use of heavy guitar riffs, emotional lyrics, and dramatic stage performances; every emo knows MCR inside and out. Personally, they're my fave too x -
Mayday Parade. Mayday Parade is a staple in the emo community, with a sound that's instantly recognizable and relatable. Their lyrics touch on themes of love, heartache, and growing up, resonating deeply with fans of the genre. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the emo scene, Mayday Parade's music is a listen. Their music has helped me through some tough times. -
Pierce The Veil. Pierce the Veil is a band that needs no introduction in the emo world. With their combination of heart-wrenching lyrics and explosive instrumentals, they've earned a place as one of the most beloved bands of the genre. Whether you're belting out their catchy choruses or lying on your bed feeling all the feels, PTVs music never fails to hit you right where it hurts.

What are the rules of Emo?? Written or unwritten.
Music. Music: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
Bands. Music, it’s all about the music. Emotional songs- just something that makes you feel the feels. Popular or underground, music is the blood of all emos. Try out some emo bands and see which ones you like best.
Sub-genres. Emo has several subgenres, including pop-punk, hyper-pop, hardcore- and more. Explore different kinds of emo music to find which one speaks to you. Or which one gets your head boppin’ :)
TLDR PLZ?... Listen to 'emo' bands. Get familiar with the music.
───────────────────────
Apparel. Apparel: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
Clothing. Emo fashion often includes a lot of; tight apparel, band shirts, studs, checkerboard print and an accent colour, I typically go with red because its my fave lolz- but all black everything. Clothing is something to blend in yet stand out by.
Makeup. Emo makeup consists of again- all blacks. Heavy eyeliner and mascara, a pale face, the sicker you look, the better. Makeup isn't gendered in the emo world and often expected to be worn by anyone.
TLDR PLZ?... Black black black. Black clothing, makeup, accessories.
───────────────────────
Expression.
Emotion. Emo culture values honesty, vulnerability. Feel your emotions! It’s literally in the name. If you wanna cry, cry. Emos are meant to be sensitive, don’t be scared to be depressed. -
Art. Emos tend to engage in poetry, songwriting, journaling/diary writing or music. Explore different outlets to share your thoughts and emotions.
TLDR PLZ?... Don't be scared to feel. You're emo, not a normie. Try out a form of writing or music to get those angsty feelings out.
───────────────────────
Connect.
Outside. See if you can land some concert or festivals tickets featuring emo bands. upcoming, underground or mainstream. It doesn't matter. Attending events is a great way to meet like-minded individuals and maybe make friends. -
Online. Join some forums, start a social media group. Engage in online activity in the emo scene. Platforms like Reddit and Discord are a good way to connect with others who share your interests. Or follow a blog like this one <3
TLDR PLZ?... Try to get yourself out there. Concerts, online- get into the scene.
───────────────────────
Authenticity.
Be you. While exciting to get versed into a new culture, make sure you’re being authentic to who you are. Again, the emo scene values honesty. Be open and express yourself, don't adapt a new persona that you see fit with the scene.
TLDR PLZ?... Be you <3... just a little edgier.
───────────────────────
History.
Research. Understanding where emo came from and how the culture evolved can deepen your appreciation. Check out my other post for a little history catchup.
TLDR PLZ?... Check this post. catch yourself up on emo history.

Emo FAQs What you might be wondering or thinking. Save some time asking questions and have a peek below.
FAQ: I can't dye my hair what do I do?/Can I be emo without black hair? Duh! Not all emos have that pitch black hair. Though it is more seen and traditional to have raven black hair- some have crimson red, electric blue, blonde, dark brown- I've had my fair share of colour crazes growing up emo. As long as it's in that stereotypical emo styled cut; I'm sure you can get away with it. Hair: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
───────────────────────
FAQ: Can I still wear makeup and paint my nails as a guy? Uhm, obvi. I'm a guy with heavy eyeliner, full face of foundation and black painted nails. It's part of the culture! Take a look at the male band members, you think they look like that naturally? Makeup: 101, Nails: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
───────────────────────
FAQ: I don't have the money for new clothing or accessories- help? Hit your local thrift store! A lot of my cool finds and even my brand name shoes tend to be second hand. DIY old black shirts into something cool! Weave a cool bracelet or get your hands on some kandi/pony beads. You don't have to spend hundreds on a new wardrobe to be a part of the emo subculture. Apparel: 101 Kandi: 101 & DIYs- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
───────────────────────
FAQ: Do I have to be white to be emo? Uhm, no??? Though emos are pale, yes. It's not a culture that is racially motivated, in fact- it can be very diverse. If you're feeling left out, do a quick google image search and I'm sure you can see what I mean by diverse. Just because you have a different skin colour doesn't mean you can't have fun and enjoy the scene <3 Skin: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
───────────────────────
FAQ: Should I get piercings?/What piercings to get?/I'm too young for piercings- help? Piercings are something that's very prominent in emos if you look at their accessories. Piercings aren't required to fit in, nor do they define if you're emo or not, don't be silly. I currently have about 4 :)
If you can't/don't want to commit to getting pierced- there's a few options;
Look online for clip on ear piercings, they're cheap and without the pain of a needle. You can also find stick on ones for facial piercings (which I use for snake bites). I prefer slide on rather than magnetic septums for long wear. I try to avoid magnetic piercings at all cost since they can seriously damage tissue/cartilage after prolonged use.
Where should you start if you have no piercings? Loab. Start with your earlobes and see how they go for you!
What's common? Any kind of lip piercings are common in the scene, as well as septum piercings. Normally ears are hidden behind straight black hair- but you can deck them out if you really want. Piercings: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
TLDR PLZ?... You don't need piercings, silly. It's personal preference. I would go for septum, snakes and loab piercings if you're looking to get pierced. If you don't want to or are too young too, look online for clip on piercings- avoid magnetic!
───────────────────────
FAQ: Emo, Scene? What's the difference? While emo culture was born in the 1980s and became increasingly popular around the 2000s, scene was born in the 2000s.
Although both styles have similar roots, there are some notable differences between emo and scene;
Emo generally involves a specific style of black clothing, punk, metal or rock music, and ideology that expresses deep and intense emotions, often related to emotional suffering and addiction, SH or suicidal struggles. Apparel: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
Scene on the other hand is characterized by bright eye-catching colours, bright patterns, EDM or rave music, lots of accessories and a more playful attitude. Scenesters tend to be more extroverted than emos.
Both are normally thin, wear heavy eyeliner and have teased hair to all living hell- but really, they're very different from face value.
TLDR PLZ?... Scene is colourful, bright, colour vomit central. They're outgoing, party and listen to different music.
Emo is dark, emotional, maybe a colour here and there. Punk, metal or rock music. But there are crossovers so it's easy to confuse.
───────────────────────
FAQ: Is emo fashion alternative/alt? I personally don't consider emo fashion to be alt, no; Alternative fashion or alt fashion is a style that deviates from mainstream apparel. Its often seen as a style which doesn't conform to societies brand of 'normal'- it's also often used as an umbrella term for specific subcultures (such as emo, goth, scene, punk). A lot of people tend to confuse emo fashion with alternative fashion. Though the emo music genre is classified as a genre of alternative/punk rock. Technically it is alternative, yes.
───────────────────────
A question you didn't see an answer to? Comment below and I'll answer them below!
───────────────────────
This section may be triggering to some. TW: EDs, SH, Suicide
───────────────────────
FAQ: Do I have to be thin/anorexic to be emo? No. Though being thin is a part of the culture, you don't have to be a stick to dress the part, listen to music and style your hair silly.
The subculture did thrive in popularity throughout the pro-anorexia period, so the heroine-chic was in. The thinner the better. A lot of emos tend do be thin due to the correlation around disordered eating and the pressure to drop weight inside of the culture. Don't starve yourself. Follow a diet and exercise regularly if you want to drop weight. Weight loss: 101- coming soon ;) Follow the blog x
───────────────────────
FAQ: Do I have to cut/self harm to be an emo? No. 100% not. Please don't go down that route.
A correlation between the emo subculture and self-harm struggle is very prominent in the media. Whether it be the stereotype, song lyrics, poetry- you name it. But you definitely do not need to self-harm to be emo.
───────────────────────
FAQ: Do I have to be depressed/suicidal? Again, hell no.
Never put yourself in mental anguish just to 'fit in' with the scene. Please, try to talk to someone if you're struggling.
Being a little angsty and hating the world we live in is enough.
───────────────────────
Please, if you're struggling- reach out. Don't suffer alone x

HELP!1! What do I do???
Emo history lesson time!
So, you’ve just learnt you want to become ‘emo’, or it could be a little angsty phase against your parents- who cares. We’ve all been there. The main thing you’re panicking on is- where the heck do I start?? Don’t worry, I got you :)
───────────────────────
Where did 'emo' come from? A better understanding into the backstory of the culture.
Emo was born from music in the 1980s- but became much more popular in the early 2000s, much like most subcultures. The Emo subculture deviated against the grain originally as a sub-genre of punk music. With its unique sound, confrontational sad lyrics and more complex arrangements compared to typical mainstream punk music. Emo music typically touched on deeper issues, addictions and suicidal ideations.
The word ‘Emo’ comes from the word 'emotional' or ‘emotive’. Again, in relation to the music that feeds into the heart of the subculture. The Emo subculture is generally associated with youth who are dispirited and angry with society, other people, or themselves- or just downright anarchists.
TLDR PLZ?.. Basically, Emo came from a music genre- bloomed in the early 2000s, and typically is associated with little angsty shits. Like you ;p
