how are stranger things fans reconciling their fandom identity with the israel gaza conflict? i’m struggling. because it’s like my favorite show and it’s so important to me.
and like. originally i wanted to have some compassion for Noah Schnapp because like. he’s young. and i understand how strong cultural and familial ties could sway someone’s opinion on this. we’re very polarized as a society right now, and so i can see so clearly how people are falling into the mindsets of all anti-israel talk is antisemitic and all anti-hamas talk is anti-muslim when neither of these are true. so i wanted to give him a chance, but idk.
Brett Gelman, on the other hand, i cannot stomach at all. he’s just spreading blatant misinformation and hate, and he’s really pushing this “all palestine supporters are antisemitic” and like. to some extent he’s right. there has been a resurgence of antisemitism in the left because of this. but not to the extent he’s pushing and never enough to justify supporting a literal genocide of innocents who truly have nothing to do with antisemitism in the western left.
people have been talking about the Duffer brother and i’m afraid to look up what they’ve said.
anyway the point is. i love stranger things. people are calling to boycott it. idk how to feel about it. idk. what are other people’s thoughts?

like ok. this is clearly why i shouldn’t go on twitter, but every time i see almost anything about Gaza i actually lose my mind.
like Israel is absolutely committing genocide against innocent Palestinians, most of which are too young to have even voted for Hamas leadership. even if they did, Hamas also offers social welfare to palestinians, and after decades of systemic oppression, i can’t exactly fault the average citizen of Gaza for supporting the group feeding them in a time of hardship and polarization. that’s why i couldn’t “stand with Israel” after the Hamas attack, and why i still can’t now.
this said, however, i cannot in good faith call Israelis “european colonizers”. like yes, the original settlers of israel were mostly european but they weren’t colonizers, they were refugees. there was a refugee crisis, and fucking Great Britain handled it terribly and promised land that wasn’t theirs to promise. i think, in the scope of international activism online at least, we have gotten so polarized that we lost some awareness of how this all started.
since it’s establishment, the Israeli government is fully responsible for the oppression, kidnapping, torture, and murder of Palestinians. and we need to hold them to that. but we also need to acknowledge that this ongoing conflict did not begin because of “jewish colonizers” but because Western Europe promised the land to both the Arabs and Jewish refugees, who understandably jumped at the opportunity to have a homeland.
i hope i’ve explained my point well enough.
