"Mugen" (japanisch: „Traum“ aber auch „Unendlichkeit“) überträgt Elemente des japanischen Nō-Theater in zeitgenössischen Tanz. Wie ein Schmetterling fliegt die virtuose Tänzerin Joy Alpuerto Ritter durch den Raum. Ihre aufblitzenden Bewegungsbilder als tanzender Geist werden befeuert von den kraftvoll-orchestralen Klangräumen, die ein Wanderer - der Musiker Mohammad Reza Mortazavi - erzeugt. In der ständig sich wandelnden Begegnung zwischen einem Wanderer (Waki) und einem tanzenden Geist (Shite), sucht Kawaguchi dem Sehnsucht des Menschen nach einem beständigen Dasein, nach anhaltenden, tiefen Verbindungen zu anderen Menschen heute Gestalt zu geben.

helios ⦿

An experimental film to investigate the name for the sun in different languages. The title icon ⦿ represents the sun found in ancient Egypt and Chinese hieroglyphs, also used in astrological symbolism. The title ‘helios’ is the personification of the sun in Greek mythology, sometimes identified as Apollo. The primitive words often tells us ethnic influence, providing a clue to etymological roots.

世界中の「太陽」を指す言葉を探求する実験映像作品。タイトルにある ⦿ は古代エジプト、古代中国象形文字、並びに惑星記号として用いられている共通のシンボルである。heliosとは古代ギリシャ神話における擬人化された太陽神であり、のちにApolloとしても人々に広まった。生命活動に不可欠な根本要素の呼び名は、その時代・地域の精神的影響を表しているものが多く、語源を通じ先代の宇宙観を感じれると考えた。

‘theo +/-’ is an experimental film focusing on bipolar phenomena conducted through geometric shape of a sphere. The film is an extended interpretation of Baba’s installation artwork ‘ theo + ’ representing a black sphere and ‘ theo – ‘ representing a white sphere. Aesthetically the elements are reduced into simplest form around us, metaphorically confronting various notions such as; black and white, irrational and stable, ying and yang, fusion and fission, material and spiritual. Through out the film, rhythm and silence is a key factor of expression, a giving a moment toward viewers to subliminally comprehend the opposing factors through their auditory sense. The idea had been conceived by the artist’s perspective of life and death. The visual conception of how we exist as a form of matter operating ourselves though one’s soul. The screenplay crossovers between a bright closed room and dark infinite space, indicating transition of life in different stages through recurrent scenes and repetitive rhythms, signifying Baba’s expression of a chant toward the predecessor.

‘theo +/-‘ はこの宇宙における対極な現象を球体のみを用いて表現した映像作品である。作品の着想は、作家が描く生と死の概念から生まれ、’体と魂’の表裏一体の関係を視覚化したものである。宇宙の構成要素を理解する上で私たちには馴染みの深い「球体」のみを用いることによって、コンセプトの洗練を試みた。日本語における「魂（たましい）」という言葉は的確に表現していると作家は考える。物質と精神、プラスとマイナス、白と黒、陰と陽、遠心力と求心力等、様々な対極の現象を、最小限まで省略された形状を通じ比喩的に表現。流れる音楽は作品の要となっており、反復音と無音を通じ対極性を聴覚越しに感じてもらう。言語学者の故・白川静氏は「夜更けた暗黒のときに、ひそかな音が門を通り抜ける姿に偉大なる何かを感じ」その様子を昔の日本人は’音連れ（おとずれ）’として表現したという。なお漢字の「闇」はその様子を表していると説明でき、「訪れる」の語源はここに関係する。明るい白い部屋を’現世’として、漆黒の永遠に続く闇を’あの世’として描き、人々が見たことのない東洋観を具現化したかったと伝えている。反復するリズムと繰り返す光景は作家によるお経の独自の表現であり、先代への供養である意味を込めた。

A photo of my film installed inside the main vault of Central Bank of DDR (East Germany). The message aims toward questioning the essential value of our beings through an empty vault of a government that no longer exists.

旧東ドイツ中央銀行跡地内の金庫内部で展示した時の象徴的な一枚。存在しない国家の空の金庫という象徴的な場所での展示を通じ、本質的な価値とは何かを見る側に問いかけることに焦点を当てた。
