Fucking reblogging again BECAUSE PEOPLE WON'T STOP TELLING ME ALL THE SHIT IN SWM IS JUSTIFIED. I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK IS JUSTIFIED. DON'T TELL ME ABOUT IT.
Two times I've posted about how reading Snape's worst memory makes me physically ill and unable to sleep. Both times I got people in the comments saying he deserved it. What is it about "this event makes me physically ill" makes people think I'm absolutely fit to hear about how horrible Severus was and how much he deserves it?
No, tell me how it makes any sense to go to a person obviously in emotional turmoil and compound it by saying, 'Hey, you know this guy you feel bad for? He deserved everything that happened to him. Hey, you know the sexual harassment you read about? He brought it on himself.'
What the fuck? Have people lost all empathy? All sense? Do I need to spell it out? I feel like I'm breaking and I don't want to discuss whether public humiliation and sexual assault are deserved.

@observerssegion my response:
• The sexual assualt happened literally five seconds after she walked off. Did she cross the entire courtyard in five seconds? Did she haul ass into the castle despite "cooly" walking off? Did she NOT hear James yelling to the crowd "who wants to see me take off Snivelly's pants?" Did she NOT hear the jeers of the crowd, 'cause they undoubtedly jeered, when James took them off? Did she NOT hear about it from the entire school the next day gossiping and ridiculing him? The blame of the SA is entirely on James. But Lily letting it all happen is cruel.
• He lashed out because he was in the middle of being publically humiliated and she almost cracked a smile, suggesting some part of her found the image he made, exposed and humiliated, humerous.
It was wrong to call her that, I get it. I'm saying his words aren't coming from a rational place that actually thinks she's a mudblood. He didn't sit and deliberate her lineage and decide with full conscious and logical thought that she's a mudblood. He was being tormented in front of a crowd. He was backed into a corner. People lash out all the time when they're that weak and say things they don't mean to say. And Severus actually went and apologised to Lily for it. So that proves he didn't mean it.
• What could she have done? Use her wand to cover up Sev? Use her wand to Scourgify James' and Sirius' mouths exactly like they were doing to Sev? Use her wand to cut the ropes binding Sev, or the counter curse to Levicorpus? Tell everybody to leave, tell someone to get a teacher? Literally do anything besides yell useless words at James?
• Lily didn't have to save face. She's a beautiful, Perfect Gryffindor "standing up" to bullies who are hexing an unpopular guy. She has the most noble image you could have. The fact that Sev called her a mudblood doesn't deter from that—SHE'S not the one crawling on the ground coughing out soapsuds, wandless and stammering and flashing her underwear at a crowd of her peers. If a drunk naked guy pissing on the curb yelled a slur at a passerby would the passerby have to retaliate to save face?
Lily is a popular girl with all her grace intact. Severus is the one whose dignity is in shambles in front of a crowd who don't care about his wellbeing to the point of laughing like his indignity is good TV.
• She has to defend herself from the trouserless, friendless, wandless guy with an entire crowd laughing at him and two bullies hexing the shit out of him? Sure buddy.
• It doesn't matter here that Severus spends his time with morally questionable students. Firstly, Remus spends his time with two vicious bullies, one who tried to kill a student and another who sexually assaulted a student. Does that make Remus an attempted murderer and a sexual assaulter? Nope. His friends are. Why does he continue to hang out with them if they're so bad? Because they protect him and accept him, and otherwise Remus would be ostracised. Exactly like with Severus and the pureblood cult he's being seduced into.
Secondly, questionable morality of a MINOR does not excuse PUBLIC humiliation and sexual assault being done to them. No matter who Severus was, no Hogwarts student should have let any of what happened to him in SWM happen, never mind the girl who was his precious childhood friend.
• Why should she stick around if Severus called her a mudblood and James pissed her off? Buddy, James pisses her off for having an enormous head and being a bully to Severus. Lily is morally pissed at him for being a garbage human, not personally pissed at him. She is personally pissed at Severus. That's like saying Harvey Weinstein pisses me off so I won't go help this dude he's harassing because they both piss me off.
If she was as morally upright as she claims to be, she would stick around and stop the bullying, then explode on Severus all she likes. That's what she should've done, but she left Severus to the wolves.
• We don't know if she called teachers? She didn't. She literally said she won't bother helping anymore. If she was going to call a teacher, she would've already when she was yelling at James before Sev said anything.
• "She wasn’t educated about grooming or how cults prey on the vulnerable, she was a teenager." That actually makes sense. I won't fault Lily for not realising Sev was being groomed.
• "Why should she forgive a guy who hangs out with people who want her dead?" She doesn't have to. Maybe she even shouldn't. But she should not have forgiven a privileged pureblood boy who bullied anyone weaker for the kicks and giggles and sexually assaulted her friend and threatened to hex him further if Lily didn't go out with James. She not only forgave James, she married the guy. But she couldn't forgive Severus after he apologised, when he would never in a million years let anyone touch a hair on her head, not even Voldemort himself? Yeah, if someone was that loyal and dedicated to me I would fucking hang out with them.
If you leave your friends to be publically harassed at the mercy of two bullies because they called you a bad name, then I feel extremely bad for your friends. This is coming from someone who's a minorty btw with multiple slurs attached to their race.
DNI with me again please I hate arguing about SWM. Block me if you please. This is presicely why all my posts are tagged "anti-[thing]" and are not tagged "[thing]" because I come to tumblr for sitting in a circle jerk with people who like Snape and hate the Marauders. I don't want to argue with people who like the characters I hate. Love Lily Evans or the Marauders all you want, all power to you. Goodbye.

— song mash-up and art by me.
Tell me this isn't Severus-coded. The people (represented by Holding On to a Hero) want a hero like Harry Potter. Someone who survived the deadliest curse, rode a dragon, killed a Basilik, defied the odds and came back from the dead. Meanwhile, the hero (represented by Hero) is just a human man. He is a skeletal friendless boy who's crude and poor and flawed and cynical. Who tries to do good but more often than not he fails. Needs a hero himself but no one is coming. Questions whether the world deserves saving at all, but sacrifices his heart and years for it anyway because he couldn't live with himself if he made one more bad choice.

Reposting something I wrote in a reblog because it bears repeating:
It astounds me how people sometimes brush over the social ramifications of SWM. The sexual assault took place publically. People were laughing. He was suspended in the air, so even people at the back of the crowd had a good view. Hell, people in the castle could glance out a window and perfectly see what was happening in the courtyard. And if you didn't manage to catch the live show, you can bet everyone at school will describe it to you in explicit, embellished detail.
It's a nightmare. A living, horrific nightmare. Worse than The Prank. Fifteen year olds are already insecure about their bodies. Imagine being violated and exposed in such a way, your body used against you, each scar and pimple displayed, genitals and arse and belly seen and mocked by everyone for two years.
And already Severus' social standing was iffy because he's a low-class boy in a bigotted school. If he had had any respect before this, James and Sirius good as killed and buried it with SWM. The studious kids who might've been neutral about him won't touch him with a six foot pole now because he has become an eyesore and a joke. Those studious kids are the future Healers, Aurors, lawyers, etc, and they will always remember how back when they were in school that Snivellus kid was "pathetic" and "flashed" the whole school. It's horrible and sick, but this is how these things are regarded in life.
And I can guarantee you Severus was getting no invitations to the Slug Club after this. Which means no connections in the Potioneer community, no future sponsors. Nothing but exclusion and vicious ridicule by people he had to sit next to and share meals with every day.
You know what's the worse part? Lily was one of the people who mocked him when he was at his lowest.
Lily, whose furious expression had twitched for an instant as though she was going to smile
“I won’t bother in future. And I’d wash your pants if I were you, Snivellus.”
“I don’t want you to make him apologize,” Lily shouted, rounding on James. “You’re as bad as [Snape] is.”
I can't believe this girl is treated like the paragon of empathy and good morality. Her old friend is being publically humiliated and sexually harassed and she:
1) Almost cracks a smile.
2) Tells him oh what a great bother it is to be constantly helping him and how she won't do it anymore.
3) Calls him the same name his bullies use to break down his confidence and sense of self. A name Severus himself has probably gone to Lily to complain about before, when they were 12 or 13 and comforting your friend over their bullies' namecalling was things friends do.
4) Tells him to wash his underwear before leaving him there. He's poor. He wears his mother's and father's hand-me-downs. He probably has had the same three pairs of underwear for years and he has to rotate between them, and laundry day would render him naked. There's nothing shameful about this. Lily knows these things. She knows the living conditions of his house. His rich bullies have mocked him for years over his hygiene and clothes. And Lily uses the same insults when Severus is a kicked-down cornered animal, lashing out.
5) Tells Severus he is as bad as James. Severus is as bad as his sexual harasser? Severus is as bad as the rich boy who bullies his peers for no reason?
You expect your bullies to beat you down and string you up. But you never expect an old friend would beat you down too.

Ughhhh the way Alan Rickman talked the the costume designer and told her he had to have tight sleeves and clothing (because Snape makes potions and can’t get his sleeves in the way), but J.K. Rowling wrote him with long sleeves and draping robes that would get in the way. Alan Rickman seemed to know Snape better than J.K. Rowling did. He even requested at least one specific extra scene to demonstrate Snape better. He loves his characters.

JKR: Snape is ugly.
JKR describing Snape in the books: “…thin man with greasy, shoulder-length black hair, a large hooked nose, sallow skin, and cold, black eyes.”
??? That’s just Some Guy. Sure, maybe he isn’t a super model, but nothing about that description is undeniably unattractive except maybe the greasy hair. She rarely describes him with any physical features that are seen by the majority of people as being overwhelmingly unattractive. In addition to the quote above, she describes him with a long face, thin lips, sharp shoulders, long fingers, yellow and crooked teeth, a face that occasionally blushes, and a smooth voice. Bitch, that’s like 95% Adrien Brody, and you’re telling me you were trying to describe an unattractive man? Well, try again. Not to mention this is a man in his thirties throughout the entire series, who presumably looks his age or younger considering that she deliberately describes Lupin as looking much older than he should. Oh, and he’s heavily inspired by her chemistry teacher, who was objectively attractive and absolutely a saint. Please do yourself a favor and look him up. Anyway.
This has been my monthly “JKR is transphobic, misogynistic, racist, and also a fucking idiot” post.

I commented part of this on TikTok, but I got pretty into it, so I’ll post more of it here. However, I don’t think it will have as much sting here because I think the population of Tumblr is more in tune with how fucked up and inherently accidentally iniquitous and evil every aspect of Harry Potter as a piece of media is (coming from someone who engages in the fandom on a regular basis).
It’s impossible to separate the art from the artist because J.K. Rowling’s personality reflects on everything about Harry Potter and the world of it. Her classism, superiority complex, fantasies, and latent shame and denial, of desires and of other things, reflect on every character and situation in the series. Classism and generational wealth is supposedly bad, but her Mary Sue main character fixes everything with his Dei gratia social stance and Dei gratia inherited wealth, and it is never critiqued; it is excused by saying, “Oh, well he didn’t ask for it. He just has it! So it’s not his fault!” Harry’s money and popularity is a power fantasy and a perpetual deus ex machina. Everything in the series is in place so that J.K. Rowling does not have to confront the real issues. She deflects and distracts with issues that are real, but made a joke out of. Hermione herself forgets her stance on house elves by the time The Cursed Child happens. Harry, who supposedly is against fascism and corruption, joins and becomes a part of a fascist and corrupt government. The series shows us that children have a skewed sense of justice that makes them more empathetic, open minded, and unforgiving of severely fucked up shit, and shows us that children can and should and do grow out of this to conform with the system (Franz Kafka is typing aggressively).
J.K. Rowling is a fascist and every German psychologist from the early 20th century would have been sweating and scratching and dying study her. I could go into it more, but I’ll stop here to let it ferment, so to speak. Thank you for reading.
I’d like to hear your opinions, by the way. If you disagree, why? If you agree, what would you add? Also, I shouldn’t have to say this, but if you are unable to have a constructive and respectful discussion, I will block you.

This is the man JK Rowling banned from dressing up as Snape? This man who had a character based after him with the intention of ridiculing him, and instead of getting offended he thought it was brilliant and even wrote a little wholesome fanfic inspired by the author's world?
I'm sorry, but if I wrote a character based on someone irl and then they went and did all that for the character and my story, I would vibrate with happiness and bawl and bear hug them. John Nettleship was a national treasure. RIP.
Yearly reminder that J.K. Rowling’s awesome autistic feminist women’s and human’s rights activist chemistry teacher whom Snape was heavily inspired by (!) wrote a Harry Potter fanfiction which you can read by clicking the hyperlink. It’s very short (not even 400 words), so I definitely recommend taking a look. One can expect to finish it within two or three minutes depending on reading pace.
As a super awesome side note, here’s an essay in memorandum written by a close friend of his celebrating his life (and closely and often detailing the multitude of striking similarities between him and Snape and his relationship with the character). Here is the condensed version.
If you have the time, I recommend reading the original essay, though the writer is very good and provides a lot of insightful context in both. I think she (forgive me if the writer is a he; I haven’t read the essay since last year, I’m afraid, but I will after making this post) does a good job of giving two sides of the story and not being entirely biased toward her/his friend.
I used bold and italic lettering in hope of providing an easier reading experience to this text post. I hope this was helpful. Have a great day.

I will sully the good name of pencils if I have to
Tumblr media
The Marauders should call each other Tape Measure, Pliers, Wrench, and Pencil. Tape Measure for Moony, a retractable ruler, because Perfect Remus knows the rules yet has no spine. Pliers for Prongs; pliers look vaguely like antlers and James needs nothing less than pliers to ply his head out of his ass. Wrench for Wormtail; a wrench in the Light side's plans and can be a play on "wench". And Pencil for Padfoot; as a 40-something year old man who still uses insults like Snivellus, he gets the lamest tool in a tool box.
The Marauders are tools, is what I'm trying to say.

Snaters and Marauder stans, I want you to picture something with me for a moment. Lily Evans is accosted by two wealthy pureblood Slytherin girls in the locker rooms. They take her clothes and her wand while she's in the shower. No one is there to lend her a robe. She has to walk all the way to the Griffyndor dorms, naked.
Everyone stares and laughs at her body. The two Slytherin girls call her names and Scourgify her body, since she clearly thinks the halls are shower rooms. No one steps in to help. Mary McDonald is there telling the Slytherin girls to stop...but Mary is not helping by covering up Lily or alerting the teachers. Mary almost cracks a smile, before smothering it and yelling, "Give her back her robes!"
Then Lily, cornered and at her wit's end, lashes out at Mary. Mary scoffs and says, "Fine. I won't bother anymore. And you need to take better care of your skin." And walks off, but not before telling the Slytherin girls, "You're as bad as Lily."
This is the level of assault, degradation, and injustice that happens in SWM.

You expect your bullies to beat you down and string you up. But you never expect an old friend would beat you down too.
While Severus' worst memory is already bad enough considering the damage to a person's emotional state... I just realized that it's not just that. What about social damage? What happened to his reputation after he was sexually exposed against his will in front of his classmates?
I mean, we've seen it happen in real life. When a person's nudes get leaked, when their personal life gets exposed, the public in general doesn't side with the victim. Reputations get ruined, people lose respect and opportunities, because they get marked by what happened.
Maradeurs fans are always saying "you can't blame them for everything bad that happened to Snape!". But honestly... The things they did may very well have damaged Severus' chance of getting a normal, respected position after school. We can't pretend that kind of exposure has no effect on how other people see you.
The psychological damage something like that can cause, the humiliation, the guilt, the rage, the shame of knowing you’ll have to walk out of your room the next day and face the stares, the whispers, the laughter, the hushed comments, but above all, the faces of your aggressors, living as if nothing happened, completely oblivious to your personal hell. Just going on with their lives like it’s any other day, laughing, joking, acting the same as they did the day before the horror began. Throwing out comments—only not whispered, loud enough for you to hear—because for them, destroying your life is hilarious. To them, it was just another joke, just another day, even though you will carry it with you for life. Even though you won’t ever be able to get it out of your head.
And the worst part? You can’t tell anyone, because your teachers pretend nothing happened and the headmaster looks the other way, so all that’s left is to swallow the shit and keep going—somehow—because you either survive or you die.
Yeah, I think it’s a pretty horrific image, like with any victim of abuse who gets blamed while their abusers walk around free and untouched. But in this case, the abusers have an entire fandom defending them to the death, which is sad but also eerily similar to the thousands of people who always show up under news stories about abuse, questioning and blaming the victims without rest. The only difference is that this fandom claims to be progressive and about fighting for rights and all that, getting outraged over nonexistent slurs, while actual abuse means nothing to them. Honestly, every single one of them deserves a solid kick in the mouth.
