DULCIE SEPTEMBER Dulcie Evonne September (20 August 1935–29 March 1988) was a South African anti-apartheid political activist who had a strong social conscience and political commitment to the struggle for liberation, democracy and social justice. She started as a teacher in a primary school in Athlone, Cape Town, in 1956. At the same time she took part in activist groups against apartheid. Time passed by and she took a strong stand on the anti-apartheid struggle, becoming an important activist in the movement, leaving her job as a teacher to focus on the cause. Due to this, Dulcie was arrested and detained without trial at Roeland Street Prison on October 7 1963. Together with nine others, she was charged under the Criminal Procedure Act, with the principal charge one of ‘a conspiracy to commit sabotage, and incite acts of politically motivated violence’. She was sentenced to five years imprisonment, during which she endured severe physical and psychological abuse. In 1973 she was finally free and left South Africa on 19 December 1973. In London she got involved in the activities of the Anti-Apartheid Movement. Later on, she joined the staff of the International Defence and Aid Fund for Southern Africa. In 1976 she joined the African National Congress (ANC), where she worked in the ANC Women’s Section. At the end of 1983, Dulcie was appointed ANC Chief Representative in France, Switzerland and Luxembourg. On the morning of 28 March 1988, Dulcie was assassinated outside the ANC’s Paris office at 28 Rue des Petits-Ecuries, as she was opening the office after collecting the mail. Winnie Mándela -Illustration link cut . Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician. She resisted racial injustice towards Africans. She was part of the front line of the anti-apartheid movement, demanding freedom for political prisoners and for Africa. She was considered one of the mothers of the nation. Sadly, for some people and the media, her mistakes and failures were far greater than her contribution to the anti-apartheid struggle. Because of this, she has been harshly criticised. Her journey and fight for freedom was complicated because of the context of South Africa. But it is a fact that she played a key role in the country’s quest for independence. Born to a Mpondo family in Bizana, and a qualified social worker, in 1958 she married Nelson Mandela, who later became South Africa’s first black president. When her husband was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964, she found herself in the epicentre of the struggle. She was put in solitary confinement, treated like an animal, tortured and harassed. She was not the perfect heroine that the nation wanted, she was human. But we must never forget that she devoted her life to the anti-apartheid movement and to South Africa. Winnie Mandela died at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on 2 April 2018 at the age of 81, after suffering from diabetes and undergoing major surgery.
