L'appel du Vide - Chapter V
...
"Levond would have gone in after you, wouldn't he?"
Josephine stared, pursing her lips thoughtfully.
"Levond had a lot of crazy ideas about the world and maybe running in after me would have been one of them. It's hard to say, he wasn't there."
...

I watched this film in December with some friends of mine at a sleepover. They were scared out of their wits, and I remember keeping them up by goading them about the movie - "Did y'all hear that? Must've been the Blair Witch..." to which the nervous response would be, "Shut up, Anna!" They eventually turned on My Little Pony to ease their fears. Anyway, very interesting to hear how it was filmed. It was very creative, better than most horror movies I've seen. I especially loved how the directors left so much up to the imagination of the audience - that aspect made it ten times scarier.
Tumblr media
The three actors in the film believed that the witch legend was real, despite obviously knowing that the movie would be fake. It was only after the movie came out that they discovered the creators had made the whole thing up.
In the same way, there are many scenes where they find things to their genuine surprise – such as the twig sculptures. The scene where the tent is rattled was unscripted, and what we see from the actors is proper fear.
Furthermore, the directors weren’t with the actors during filming. They allowed the team to roam and film on their own. They got lost in the woods several times.
The Blair Witch Project has one of the highest ever turnarounds for a low budget to box office success ratio. It cost around $60 000 to make, and it returned around $240 million in cinemas.
The whole movie was shot across 8 days.
The directors left clues in a specific place in the forest each day, for the actors to find, using GPS trackers. Each package contained written instructions for each actor, according to where the plot was going next – and they weren’t allowed to show the notes to each other. Thus, they only found out what would happen as the shooting continued. And the scenes we see are improvised.
Because none of the actors were well known, many moviegoers actually thought the film was real.

L'appel du Vide - Chapter IV
...
Annie nodded, pulling her knees to her chest. She watched the journal in her sister’s hands, waiting for the right time to strike.
She wet her lips with her tongue.
"Is there any water here?”
“Water? Oh–” Josephine looked around. “There’s…well, a sort of system w– I made a while ago. It’s– it’s on the other side of the neighborhood. I’ll show it to you later, if you’re thirsty.”
Annie thought that the sister she knew would have offered the water to her now.

"There's no reason to dilute the real things that went on in the past." Well said. Your history is your history no matter what - these things happen to people and take a very real toll on them even if others may have reacted differently, or don't seem to care. Be true to the past and true to yourself.
Lots of people can’t resonate
With things that hurt you badly
For the simple reason in that
It didn’t happen to them.
When you try to explain how
Bad that particular incident
Was, they can’t relate to it because
They weren’t there when it
Happened and they weren’t
Able to embrace those emotions.
So, if they seem bemused, or
Disinterested, or they shrug,
Or yawn, or say, “I don’t know
What to say,” and that’s all they
Say, then don’t let their lack
Of response take away from
What happened to you.
You are allowed to feel still
Feel dismantled about things
That happened maybe ten, fifteen
Years back.
Other people might not have
The maturity or morality to try
And help you out with what’s bothering
You. That’s no reason to
Dilute the real things that
Went on in the past.

Somewhere in the distant city
She could hear the
Bleep bleep of lorries
And yet next to these sounds
And at a louder volume were
Those of the birds in the woods
And thus she didn’t really
Seem to belong to anywhere;
Not a town or a woodland;
Only perhaps in a fraction
Of a dark room, writing
At the computer.

Nighthawks
Nighthawks follows Vaughn, an ex-sailor who is grappling with his acquired fear of the sea and the sea's mysterious call as he faces the ghosts of not just his past, but other sailors', as well.
✧✧✧✧✧
Nighthawks - It's been a long time.
Excerpt:
Vaughn paced in the sand, chewing on a toothpick. People taking their evening stroll had begun to stare, but he couldn't see them, couldn't even hear them. He only heard the whispering water and saw that fine line he was treading between hinterland and humanity.

Two Days
Two Days follows the story of Seraphine, a woman who regularly sees the fortune-teller Madame Ramona to keep her company. Though Madame Ramona constantly gives her advice on the future, Seraphine refuses to believe any of her "visions", and takes the ultimate gamble to find truth when Madame Ramona predicts her death.
✧✧✧✧✧
Two Days - Like clouds before the heavy rains.
Excerpt:
"Seraphine," said the fortune teller slowly.
"It's just Sera." She gave a strained smile.
"The fates do not know you like that. Your God does not know you like that. Seraphine." Though her words were firm, the name was drawn out, gentle, and it somehow reminded Sera of the wind blowing through a lonely spring countryside.
Yet she still held back an eye roll.

A World Without A Heartbeat
A World Without A Heartbeat explores the chilling idea of humanity never existing at all.
✧✧✧✧✧
A World Without A Heartbeat - Somewhere out there...
Excerpt:
Somewhere out there, there is a version of Earth that lacks a heartbeat. A planet which is peaceful but barren, quiet but empty, circling the sun as a forgotten piece of rock with no one to admire it, care for it, or even do the opposite. It is devoid of the one thing that makes it ours.
It is devoid of humanity.

The Empress
The Empress follows a mysterious woman who is recognized as the perfect savior to an empire, a symbol of hope that could do no wrong. But when Benoit, a teenager hungry for revenge, intrudes on a palace dinner and holds a dagger to her throat, she does the exact opposite of what is expected of her.
✧✧✧✧✧
The Empress - A memory?
Excerpt:
Igor blinked.
"I trusted you when you first arrived."
"And you have trusted me since. I find solace in that. But you are of old blood, you have a memory woven throughout your veins that not many have anymore."
"A memory?" He tilted his head and leaned forward. Raisa's eyes passed between the two and she slowly grew curious as well, but never dared to question the Empress.
The Empress only smiled at him and went about her day.

The Body
The Body is a story about Lincoln, a highschooler working on a school project that leads him to discover his body isn't his.
✧✧✧✧✧
The Body - Those eyes...
Excerpt:
"Good Lord, man," he muttered, "the look of these guys..."
"I know," Lincoln breathed, "it's scary."
Thompson paused. Lincoln's eyes danced around his room, like a manic patient in a straight jacket, taking everything in but purposefully avoiding the blank screen of his computer. He could only imagine what he would be faced with.

Run You Dead
Run You Dead follows Jonathan, a racehorse jockey who is hellbent on proving that his horse, Obi, can win a race. Despite the forces against him, he saddles up for his next race with a good feeling in his bones, oblivious to the fact that his racehorse isn't a horse at all.
✧✧✧✧✧
Run You Dead - Just a feeling?
Excerpt:
Jonathan stared at the reins in his hands and then looked back at Obi. He made a small sound of distress, a terrified squeak, dropping the reins and sliding his bare palms down Obi's neck.
Cold. The sweat that coated the horse's pelt meant nothing.
He was cold as the dead.

I Was a Sailor
I Was a Sailor follows Jack, a washed-up sailor who seeks help from a lighthouse keeper on a strange island which he can't seem to leave.
✧✧✧✧✧ I Was a Sailor - Iron men and wooden ships, or iron ships and wooden men? Excerpt: From the seconds he was given, William could discern that the silhouette was a washed-up sailor, his clothes torn by the sea and his blond hair laden with saltwater. The lost sailor moved as if he could not hold up his own weight, staggering towards the waves in an act of confusion, then staggering back as the wind pushed him away from the sea. He did not fight the wind, only stumbled with it, once even falling back when it was too much to bear...
