There's an even better sequel to that story where her brothers conjured an invisible venomous walking oak seeping black magic and unleashed it on Munster. As a result, the ex-king's sons cut each other down in an attempt to reach it - why not want to claim a giant walking killer tree, right? to be serious, you kinda needed a giant oak tree to make your kingdom legitimate, but still - and the only one left standing was Áine's son. Hence the Eóganachta.
Actually, what the professor in the comic says is an almost unedited something my husband @sorrows-hand once heard in regard to this very story. Like, why treat r*pe as r*ape when it's all mYtHoLoGiCaL. Idk, regardless of whether the Tuatha Dé Danann were actually treated as gods by the early medieval Irish (I'd say some were, some weren't, and most of the characters we encounter are 12th c. forward regardless mentions-wise, so not much pre-Christian pantheon thing going on there, at least not anymore), r*pe is r*pe, and any person telling / transmitting that story would know what it is, and include it, on purpose, precisely as what it is.
*anthropological mic drop*

It is very fitting that Quare Éire, an art and literature anthology dedicated to queer and feminist readings of Irish mythology, goes live on Lughnasadh, the festival that, according to legend, came to be as a commemoration of a woman.
Here's the contribution made by yours truly, and please check out all the other wonderful pieces of art, poetry, and literature.

A question to fellow artblr: guys, how do you ever get into zines / watch for calls for artists for zines? I'd love to do something dark fantasy / Irish mythology / undead / queer related, but I always see the zines I like after they're being distributed.

yo aodhán, do you listen to much traditional irish or celtic music? if you do, got any recommendations?
I'm more of a folk metal / punk / Gothic country sort of person, BUT there is one recommendation that I can give whenever - Lankum!
They are a contemporary trad folk band based in Dublin, but with a twist, the twist coming from the fact that their lead Ian Lynch is also a folklorist who accumulated an immense archive of recordings and taught traditional song and music history at UCD. They also did the OST for All You Need Is Death, one of the few horror movies on the topic of faeries and otherworlds that I really liked (the other being Fréwaka), although the man-eating undead Tuatha Dé Danann guy should've gotten much more screen time imo... but I digress. Let me give you a sample I personally like very much:

Mermay day 11: Guard
This mermaid isn't prone to sharing her food or, maybe, her love interest. Whatever she needs the drowned prince for.
